Open thread: You know what America needs? More Barack Obama on television

8 p.m. ET across the dial, or try C-SPAN.org if you’re sans TV. Serious question: Why did The One call this presser? Half of it will be esoterica about Geithner’s rescue plan, the other half will be perfunctory outrageous outrage about the AIG bonuses. We can do without more of either. If you’re watching and anxious for annotation entertainment (anno-tainment?), though, there’s an embarrassment of liveblogging riches to choose from. The boss will have something going, as will Ace — with special guest star Iowahawk filling in for Obama’s teleprompter. And in what I think is a first, Greg Gutfeld will be spending his night off sharing his thoughts with Daily Gut readers. Don’t mention Canada in the comments!

While we wait, enjoy the near-epic failure of Organizing for America’s first foray into post-election canvassing. Or laugh along as CNBC cravely caves to leftist criticism by hiring Howard Dean as a contributor and inviting nutroots eminence Arianna Huffington to guest host their morning show. Good work, Jon Stewart.

Update: The TOTUS is ready, baby.

You know what America needs? More Barack Obama on television Whiskey in the Jar

Branch Rickey on March 24, 2009 at 7:33 PM

Hey Dumbo O’bama the ears and the gaffes are gold….ignore that dropping popularity and PUSH harder baby…

sven10077 on March 24, 2009 at 7:34 PM

I’m not interested unless he’s announcing his immediate resignation. In which case, I’ll catch the inevitable video clips from Allah after the party.

From Gutfeld:

I can’t hardly wait! I’ve bought a special sun dress and three pounds of brine shrimp.

Wow. And RedEye is apparently getting a new studio tomorrow.

amerpundit on March 24, 2009 at 7:35 PM

I recommend blowing him off-Turner Classic Movies will be showing a 1996 documentary about Warner Brothers animator Chuck Jones, followed by a marathon of his best work.

Del Dolemonte on March 24, 2009 at 7:37 PM

Obama’s approval ratings will slip when half the nation turns on the TV and find out he is bumping American Idol tonight.

Wait, can we vote out Obama tonight?

portlandon on March 24, 2009 at 7:37 PM

No way am I watching a speech by the Moron in Chief.

lobo603 on March 24, 2009 at 7:39 PM

*sigh* and I have to get on a conference call at 8. I’ll miss the festivities.

flipflop on March 24, 2009 at 7:39 PM

Wait, can we vote out Obama tonight?

portlandon on March 24, 2009 at 7:37 PM

I tried that last time, but the text message number never came up.

amerpundit on March 24, 2009 at 7:40 PM

Arghhhh AI bumped.

Jamson64 on March 24, 2009 at 7:40 PM

So is this going to be a daily thing?

Chuck Schick on March 24, 2009 at 7:41 PM

If I don’t get to watch all of NCIS, I’ll have one more reason to not like this guy.

Sir Corky on March 24, 2009 at 7:42 PM

Del Dolemonte on March 24, 2009 at 7:37 PM

Dang it!!! My cable company won’t give me my TCM!!!!

ladyingray on March 24, 2009 at 7:44 PM

Over exposed? I fully expect the Chicago Jesus to replace the ShamWow guy, the Snuggie, Slap Chop and the late night “Girls gone Wild” segment!!! Then we should have enough!!

Dire Straits on March 24, 2009 at 7:46 PM

If I don’t get to watch all of NCIS, I’ll have one more reason to not like this guy.

Sir Corky on March 24, 2009 at 7:42 PM

I think the whole show will be on right after the Pep Rally.

myrenovations on March 24, 2009 at 7:46 PM

Seriously–this could be just what the country needs.

Familiarity bred contemp with me. I liked him for awhile back in the spring of last year. It was only after paying attention for awhile I realized what a fraud he was. And then I became like a woman scorned. I will have a hard time being happy if he does anything right.

I know that the teenagers that I know who love American Idol are getting pretty fed up! And they will vote in 2012…

petunia on March 24, 2009 at 7:47 PM

Has anyone told Obama that the campaign ended last November?

Obama spends all this time traveling around the country and appearing in television cameras everywhere…seems Obama is live on TV daily…everywhere.

Imagine if he would spend that same amount of time actually sitting down with real professionals who have earned their bones and tried to fashion something that made sense, instead of letting his teleprompter talk (and think) for him, or depending on lackeys who have proven they have neither experience nor moral backbone to actually make tough decisions…we might be able to figure out a way through this next 1397 days.

But, around here Obama will be pre-empted by a tribute to Chuck Jones. Now that is television worth watching over and over again.

coldwarrior on March 24, 2009 at 7:48 PM

President Milli Vanilli is only slightly more overexposed than McCain’s fat daughter.

chunderroad on March 24, 2009 at 7:48 PM

Has anyone told Obama that the campaign ended last November?

coldwarrior on March 24, 2009 at 7:48 PM

Someone in a focus group just said this on Shep’s show – campaign is over, results please!

ladyingray on March 24, 2009 at 7:49 PM

Video game time!

backwoods conservative on March 24, 2009 at 7:51 PM

I’ll skip it like I did the last one and wait to read Ed’s sober critique and Allah’s sardonic ambivalence.

Btw, did you know Allah is breaking the law in Malaysia, or something?

Nessuno on March 24, 2009 at 7:51 PM

Sorry, I think the Food Network is doing a special on skim milk.

anniekc on March 24, 2009 at 7:51 PM

I might just leave the tv on, and instead of the sound of the Obamathon, play the dialogue from “Animal House” on my dvd player.
“Thank you, sir, may I have another?”

uncivilized on March 24, 2009 at 7:51 PM

Odrama doesn’t get it. We want a president to do his job and stay the hell out of our faces.
This guy is clueless and completely out of touch.
Overexposed……….period.

FireBlogger on March 24, 2009 at 7:52 PM

Has anyone told Obama that the campaign ended last November?

Well he does seem to have an adictive personality. Maybe that this is the only way he gets an adreneline rush… Sad if he ever figures out that the power rush of that red button could really be great. I hear he’s been known to experiment with getting high.

petunia on March 24, 2009 at 7:52 PM

President Milli Vanilli is only slightly more overexposed than McCain’s fat daughter.

chunderroad on March 24, 2009 at 7:48 PM

So, are you inferring that Meghan McCain is FAT?

anniekc on March 24, 2009 at 7:53 PM

I really need to catch up on my ironing.

Wethal on March 24, 2009 at 7:54 PM

Why is Obama giving a presser? Why is he doing the Tonight Show? Why is he doing 60 Minutes?

The answer is obvious: he’s doing what he’s good at doing. He’s playing to his strength. And his strength ain’t creating policy; it’s selling policy.

The question is how long will these charm offensives be effective?

DarkKnight3565 on March 24, 2009 at 7:54 PM

I really need to catch up on my ironing.

Wethal on March 24, 2009 at 7:54 PM

Okay that was cold!

petunia on March 24, 2009 at 7:55 PM

Can’t we just cut out the middle-man (Obama) and just print what his writers will stick on the teleprompters so we can ignore it later at our leisure?

Daggett on March 24, 2009 at 7:55 PM

And me with no stomach medicine in the apartment.

kingsjester on March 24, 2009 at 7:55 PM

His popularity is only dropping according to right-ring haven Rasmussen. The people of America have kept faith with President Obama…they love him…he is the People’s Prince.

dcwvu on March 24, 2009 at 7:56 PM

Oh, gee…Major says he won’t have a teleprompter, but he WILL read his remarks from a big screen television behind the press. Subtle.

uncivilized on March 24, 2009 at 7:56 PM

And me with no stomach medicine in the apartment.

kingsjester on March 24, 2009 at 7:55 PM

Aberfeldy 12-year single Highland Malt Scotch is a great substitute.

coldwarrior on March 24, 2009 at 7:57 PM

Major Garrett says no Teleprompter—instead there will be a flat screen monitor.

The Prowler had reported after the first primetime presser they were working on such a device so the teleprompter AND the list of pre-selected reporters would not be so obvious.

They also reported that the screen would be used to feed Obama tips on what to say.

Another for the “If Bush had done it” file. grrrrrrrrrrr

KittyLowrey on March 24, 2009 at 7:58 PM

Hulu is even showing this on their site. Sigh, i’ll be watching a rerun of The Office.

Definitely.

uncivilized on March 24, 2009 at 7:59 PM

No telepromter tonight? But some little panel that they have found a way to be less obvious?

Oh no! We will need a name for this new device so we can properly mock it.

How phony balony is this guy?

I wonder if it is like a magic mirror… whose the fairest one of all?

Well he doesn’t have to say “read my lips” he can just say read my big brother screen behind you.

petunia on March 24, 2009 at 8:01 PM

I’m not watching. I hope Obama and his teleprompter have made up or this is going to be a long evening for him.

uncivilized on March 24, 2009 at 8:02 PM

I know Idol fans who are not going to like this at all.

I mean it screws up the whole week. They need two hours tonight and then the next night is the vote.

This is just awful.

I don’t have cable, is this a good time to get it?

neuquenguy on March 24, 2009 at 7:58 PM

Yes, you can hang yourself with it after watching the press conference. That’s what I’d, do, anyway.

C’mon, lighten up. It’s for the children.

Our local glass plant found out the glass they have been making to up to date standards won’t qualify for these homeowners credits – they changed the standard again! All the company’s investment is lost.

ladyingray on March 24, 2009 at 8:03 PM

You know why the filthy liar does this in prime time? If the bastard were to do this while the market was open the results would be disasterous.

Signs of progress?

Did he fire Barney?

djl130 on March 24, 2009 at 8:04 PM

Watch his eyes. He’s reading it off of a screen on the camera.

BacaDog on March 24, 2009 at 8:05 PM

bubbles and bursts are natural cycles of a free-market economy. Interesting that Obama says he wants to do away with them.

DarkKnight3565 on March 24, 2009 at 8:05 PM

I think the whole show will be on right after the Pep Rally.

myrenovations on March 24, 2009 at 7:46 PM

Yeah, the plan is to show NCIS right after, but who knows how long after 9 Obama is going to go on. It’s not like “succinct” is his middle name.

Whatever. I’m going to watch Sydney White until he’s done. Amanda Bynes running for student council president is a campaign I can get behind.

Sir Corky on March 24, 2009 at 8:05 PM

He is using a huge monitor at the back of the room and one on his podium. I hereby officially dub it the I (invisible)-TOTUS.

kingsjester on March 24, 2009 at 8:05 PM

Ris4victory on March 24, 2009 at 8:05 PM

mikeyboss on March 24, 2009 at 8:05 PM

Charles Krauthammer on Fox said Dems use the word Investment in place of ’spend’

Betcha TOTUS uses ‘investment’ at least 25 times.

TN Mom on March 24, 2009 at 8:05 PM

Somebody hack into the teleprompter and see if you can get him to recite “Mary had a little lamb”.

Daggett on March 24, 2009 at 8:05 PM

More affordable auto loans? What zero down, at 3% for 48 months is not affordable? What’s he gonna do pay half?

Oldnuke on March 24, 2009 at 8:06 PM

This might be a way to save our nation. Lets keep him booked on TV every night for the rest of his tour of duty. Include the Dems in the spotlight and nothing will be passed or signed into law that could hurt us.

chemman on March 24, 2009 at 8:06 PM

prompter just stalled a sec

Ris4victory on March 24, 2009 at 8:06 PM

I just turned around and looked at the TV. I want to see the screen!!!!! I want to read along! They need a follow the bouncing ball! And music! That would be great!!!

And then a phone number and place to text so he doesn’t come back next week! “Thanks for playing!”

petunia on March 24, 2009 at 8:06 PM

Gawdammit, he’s still campaigning.

DarkKnight3565 on March 24, 2009 at 8:07 PM

neuquenguy on March 24, 2009 at 8:07 PM

“I’m as angry as anybody.” Gee, he sure looked angry while he was smoking pot with Steve Croft on 60 minutes.

Subterfuge tonight. TOTUS reports:

Me? I’ll be flying solo tonight, as a screen in the back of the room out of most camera shots.

If you click on AP’s link to TOTUS in the post, you’ll see a pic of it at the back of the room.

INC on March 24, 2009 at 8:07 PM

DOW futures +20

genso on March 24, 2009 at 8:07 PM

Ahahaha. They moved his teleprompter to attach to the camera so he’s looking straight.

Hilarious.

Kiss compensation goodbye.

BuckeyeSam on March 24, 2009 at 8:07 PM

I’m a few minutes behind the live press conference, but he just said that lower mortgage payments = a tax cut!!! So, when Cap & Trade raises energy costs, we can now call that a tax increase? Yippee!!!!

mctowler on March 24, 2009 at 8:07 PM

help what is TOTUS

kara26 on March 24, 2009 at 8:07 PM

Why do they keep taking that picture of Obama with his head surrounded by gold ring of the Presidential Seal like it’s some kind of halo? Are they trying to deify him or something? It’s no coincidence – this is the second time I’ve seen this shot. It’s really pissing me off.

swash_plate on March 24, 2009 at 8:07 PM

He stared with an evil eye at TOTUS

faraway on March 24, 2009 at 8:07 PM

It strikes me as insecurity on Obama’s part to need to be out in front of the camera so much. If his plans and policies were so great he wouldn’t nee to be out selling them on a nightly basis.

Scrappy on March 24, 2009 at 8:07 PM

he has a pre arranged list again

Ris4victory on March 24, 2009 at 8:07 PM

What a POTUS.

BacaDog on March 24, 2009 at 8:08 PM

I wasn’t going to watch…but he’s really bad tonight…he’s angry and I guess they are moving the teleprompter too fast because he’s talking too fast and stumbling. Who said this guy was a good orator?

njpat on March 24, 2009 at 8:08 PM

The Prowler after the first primetime press conference:

SCREENING OBAMA

“It looked scripted beyond the scripted part, the speech,” says one former communications adviser, who has been feeding notes and suggestions to the White House team and worked with them on the inauguration. “Every president has gone into one of these things knowing that there were some pre-arranged questions or journalists to be called on, but this one was pretty ham-handed.”

To that end, he says, the White House is looking to install a small video or computer screen into the podium used by the president for press conferences and events in the White House. “It would make it easier for the comms guys to pass along information without being obvious about it,” says the adviser.

The screen would indicate whom to call on, seat placement for journalists, pass along notes or points to hit, and so forth, says the adviser.

KittyLowrey on March 24, 2009 at 8:08 PM

Why does he always call on Loven, first?

Or, is that a stupid question?

yo on March 24, 2009 at 8:08 PM
