Obama at 50-50?

posted at 9:19 am on March 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Has Obama hit the end of the honeymoon at 60 days in office?  According to a new Zogby poll, Obama has hit 50% in his latest job-approval polls. The Boston Herald covers the details offered by the pollster:

Pollster John Zogby said his poll out today will show Americans split on the president’s performance. He said the score factors out to “about 50-50.”

Some polls show Obama coasting with a 65 percent job approval, but not in Zogby’s tally.

“The numbers are going down,” Zogby told the Herald. “It’s not because of the gaffes, but a combination of high expectations and that things aren’t moving fast enough with the economy.”

The Herald also spoke with a communications professor at Boston University, who believes that Obama has mismanaged his media appearances.  Toby Berkovitz says Obama has become overexposed and needs to be seen working rather than campaigning.  “I wonder when the public will say ‘Instead of being in front of the camera, be in front of a spreadsheet.’ ”

A 50% approval rating would be a stunning drop, but this is Zogby.  His results tend to have more significant swings than other pollsters.  He does get some things correct, but those of us who watch polls for any significant length of time usually like to see if other polls show the same trends.

Rasmussen has.  Over the last few weeks, Scott Rasmussen has repeatedly shown a rapid rate in dissatisfaction over Obama’s performance, and a smaller but still significant decline in approval.  Yesterday’s job-approval rating on the daily tracking poll has Obama at 56%, not the 50% shown by Zogby, but that’s down from the high 60s at the end of January.  Also, the gap between strong approval and strong disapproval has gone from over 30 points to just 5.

If Zogby’s right and it’s all about the economics, then a rebound in jobs would help.  Unfortunately, jobs are a lagging indicator of an economic recovery, and we haven’t seen the leading indicators yet, as Obama’s policies have mostly kept capital on the sidelines.  The AIG bonus controversy, which Democrats hoped to use to lever populist outrage against capital, blew up in their faces and convinced capital investors to shelter themselves from the storm.  Zogby may or may not have overstated the decline, but he’s got the direction right.

I’d argue the opposite. They’re moving too fast, and with media’s relentless encouragement. AIG for over a full week now. The NYT broadside before the plan was even announced. Everyone needs to chill the eff out.

3 questions that would drive polls down down down for uhbuhma tonight

1. Do you think it is important for Congress to read bills before they pass them and for the WH to read them before you sign them?

2. How many generations do you think it will take to balance the budget…and could you tell me if you know the latest CBO estimates of the deficit in out years.

3. Do you think 25 DVD’s that could not be played in Britain was an appropriate gift for our most reliable ally?

Oh, to have a Press that would ask the obvious.

winston on March 24, 2009 at 9:26 AM

I thought this was the President who’s honeymoon period was going to be six years. The President who was going to be soooo popular that the 22d Ammendment was going to have to be repealed by popular demand.

How quickly things change. I just never imagined they’d change in only 60 days. The six year honeymoon turned into the shortest Presidential honeymoon in history.

The best way to slow down this train wreck, is to have Obama’s approval rating below 50%. This show’s the public mood, outrage, and unwillingness to support this vile move towards Socialism-Communism. Fortunately for the citizens of this great nation, elections have consequences. What is a certain train wreck due to the consequences of this last election, can also lead to removal of those in power come 2010. Big time lessons here for American citizens, as we are all getting a real good look into the mindset of a Liberal. No masks, no disguises, real deal Liberalism on display for all to see.

Obama, Pelosi, Reid; real deal Liberals…

I predict that Punchy will have better numbers than Dubya because of the tendency towards solidarity on the left. A significant number on the right took different sides on complex issues such as Teri Schiavo or Elian Gonzalez; the left always presented a united front.

Adherence to party line is just the nature of that beast.

His support will remain strong within the black community(because he’s a Democrat as much as his skin color). But independent voters who were swayed towards voting for him because they wanted to prove a (half)black man could get elected President won’t get pressured into voting that way a second time. If Obama is to win reelection, it will be because his record warrants another term.

He’s still saying that in his speeches. I have to give Obama credit for one thing. He’s got some serious stones holding fiscal responsibility summits the day after signing a $787 billion bill into law. And claiming he’ll go line-by-line through the budget after saying he was shocked by the AIG bonuses. And alledging the stimulus bill has no earmarks when it’s chock full of them. And promising no more earmarks after signing a bill containing 8,600 of them.

It’s interesting to note that a supposedly “unbiased” source of polling results refuses to include Rasmussen’s
results.

That would be Polling Report, which on their masthead says:

An independent, nonpartisan resource
on trends in American public opinion.

I e-mailed the site owner and asked if they could include Rasmussen, as that firm was most accurate in prediciting the final 2008 results. Of course my e-mail was ignored.

Should be interesting to see if the other polls follow suit. As for Zogby, take him with a massive grain of salt.

What Americians are seeing today online and in the newspapers and on TV is that Obama’s approval ratings are dropping. Just that much could “allow” people to come “out of the closet” and say yeah you know I don’t think he is doing a good job without being termed a racist or unamerician.

Ogabe wanting to seize more firms has investors nervous…

sven10077 on March 24, 2009 at 9:56 AM

not sure if it is fine print or just a normal “taking profits”

The recent uptick in the DOw will help Obama which is fine by me. I would rather Obama fail without destroying all the weath in the country.

However IMO we will retest the lows of 6500 in the next month or so as more bad news comes out.

I’d argue the opposite. They’re moving too fast, and with media’s relentless encouragement. AIG for over a full week now. The NYT broadside before the plan was even announced. Everyone needs to chill the eff out.

My point is this:

Black folks and liberals in general, will vote for a white liberal over a black/Latino/Asian conservative.

Anyone disagree?

It’s about philosophy.

So far, I’d say this life form doesn’t like Obama very much, and is looking for a reason or cause to see beyond Obama.

The dow ordinarily is relatively ambiguous as to who is in power…

of course the Dow since november has seen Ogabe staring at it like a hungry wolf….

I’d love to see it go to 15,000 of good sound properly risk assessed growth….

that ain’t gonna happen with a socialist at the wheel.

Hey this F’in Unicorn I got for voting for the One is … is nothin but a F’in donkey with a paper towel cylinder taped on it’s head. Also, the hide has got some white crap that is rubbing off.

I been swindled.

F’in Obama.

The market will drop to a net 200 point gain at best by Friday as Ogabe talks about SEIZING “failing business”….last time I checked that ain’t government’s call…

sven10077 on March 24, 2009 at 9:57 AM

I believe Obama will issue a correction tonight. He did not mean to say “seize the pay,” but rather “seize the day.” Barack’s teleprompter is getting a a little snarky and wanted to play a joke on him.

TOTUS, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas any more. We must be over the rainbow!

THE ONE: “Toto-us, why does that gold in the pot at the end of the rainbow smell like crap?”

Toto-us: “You askin’ me, boss? You’re the one that was sittin’ on it.”

Strange Brew, if poll numbers lag, that means that the 65 % aprroval rating you’re embracing could actually be 45 %. And given his little announcement about basically wanting to take over more companies, I wouldn’t be surprised to see both the Dow and his Poll Numbers continue to dive like a submarine.
