Comedy gold: Maxine Waters grills Geithner on the secret Goldman Sachs cabal or something

posted at 7:03 pm on March 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Business Insider, celebrating the economic acuity of a politician who’s always good for a comic soundbite. Consider this a lesson in what happens when lawmakers get their news from HuffPo: She’s trying to ask Geithner whether Goldman Sachs alumni at Treasury are favoring the company, but in Waters-speak it turns into a jumbled series of questions about where, among others, Geithner’s “CEO” used to work. (I think she means Neel Kashkari.) Anyway, just watch his facial expressions. Our nation is in good hands, my friends.

Anyone seen a clip of the D congressman that tried to get the three to admit that they were favoring those who bought AGI insurance on their investments by bailing AGI out? He was one or two speakers after Ron Paul.

There is, I think, a legitimate question somewhere in her questions.

Gotta’ dig real real deep.

There is a question of transparency and the public’s ability to keep track of what is occurring when we have trillions – think of that figure – being handed out.

Let’s face it, nobody can monitor what is going on here. The chance of abuse is very high.

pcpower1 on March 24, 2009 at 7:19 PM

I love how none of her questions are even meant to get an answer at all. It’s just her trying to make weak points through insinuation. This is clear by the fact that she never even allows him to make a full answer to anything she says. “I have a limited time” she says everytime he gets half way into his first sentence.

In her mind the time is for her to ask a lot of rhetorical questions, not for the person who is being questioned to actually give any testimony.

neuquenguy on March 24, 2009 at 7:25 PM

Absolutely.

There’s no way in hell they can track any of those funds. Hell, if the AIG bonus plan hadn’t been transparent they’d never have missed the 168 million.

Now Geithner wants more authority? You gotta be kidding me.

BacaDog on March 24, 2009 at 7:30 PM

And yeah the look on Geithner’s face was precious!

That’s how I would look if faced with someone of that stature making so little sense.

Which can mean only one thing… He may be a tax cheat but he’s not a cyborg!!!

Waters strings together words and thinks she’s making sense. We’ve all met people like her who aren’t nearly as smart as they think they are. They like to use big words, but don’t know enough to use them properly, like Carmine Jr. on the Sopranos.

Have to wonder a bit about Obama’s motivation regarding Wall Street. He’s let go the dogs of war, so to speak, when it comes to the major players in New York’s financial hallways and boardrooms. Even talking about “government” seizing private companies and publicly-traded corporations when they are financially insufficient/deficient/or just not looking like what the White House wants them to look like.

Maybe, it goes back to his early legal days…Harvard Law graduate…right time, right place, most of his fellow grads ended up with nice leather chairs and dark wood paneling in their offices…and a lot more perks. So, Obama heads to New York City…ends up as a gopher for Business International Corporation, working on a newsletter? Never gets in to the Board Room of any major Wall Street concern. Heads to Chicago…

After all these years, do you think that chip on his shoulder may be getting a bit heavy? Payback time?

As for Maxine…if she is the best and brightest out of California’s 35th District…California is really in deep doo doo.

So what she is saying is that “Wall Street Types” is code for Jews?

petunia on March 24, 2009 at 7:27 PM

It just seemed that way to me. I noticed it was always “Goldman” people, with a weird emphasis on the name. No talk of “Morgan Stanley” people, or “Bear Stearns” people, or “Bank Of America” people. Something about Goldman Sachs, which just had a faint whiff of “Big-nosed Shekel chasers” to my ears.

Of course, I sometimes get the same reaction from people when I talk about Israel and the rise of the neo-cons, so I have to grant the possibility that it is in fact quite innocent, and it is just some concern that Goldman Sachs really was riding dirty. But it sure sounded weird.

JohnGalt23 on March 24, 2009 at 7:38 PM

neuquenguy on March 24, 2009 at 7:25 PM

Granted, they couldn’t be as stupid as they look. But they aren’t as smart as they think they are either. Imagine the hubris it takes for them to think that they – the same ones who ran Freddie and Fannie, who said they couldn’t figure out Turbo Tax, who wouldn’t know a credit derivative from a credit card – think they should have more power to regulate the financial markets rather than leaving that to the financial professionals for the ‘good of the nation’.

Not that the best minds on Wall Street don’t get it spectacularly wrong sometimes. But if men like Buffett can occasionally be remarkably bone-headed, can you imagine Wall Street in the hands of people like Rangel and Geithner?
