Why do Democrats hate the press?
posted at 11:22 am on March 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
People assume that Republican politicians hate the media, but at least they don’t shut them out of events like leading Democrats do. Last week, President Barack Obama had a ceremony at the White House to receive an award from an association of black journalists — and locked the national media out of the event. Gearlog now notes that Al Gore, who stumps the world for global-warming policy changes and to educate people on the Coming Environmental Catastrophe, has decided to cut the press out of his appearances, too (via Romanesko):
In a highly ironic move, Al Gore has barred the press from even attending his speech at the upcoming CTIA Wireless 2009 conference, the nation’s largest gathering of the wireless communications industry.
The ban only applies to people with press badges. If you’re a corporate or personal blogger or Tweeter, apparently you can get in to the 4,000-seat auditorium where the speech will be held on April 3. The wireless industry group running the conference, CTIA washed their hands of the ban, saying that it’s part of Al Gore’s standard speaking contract and that there was nothing they could do about it.
That’s part of his “standard speaking contract”? Say, didn’t Gore teach a few classes at Columbia’s School of Journalism in 2001, where journalists train for their craft? In fact, he did — and imposed a gag order on them, threatening them with expulsion from his class if they spoke to the press. He did the same thing in 2007 when he appeared at South Dakota’s Augustana College.
Gearlog notes that the language on the CTIA website barring the press has disappeared:
Update, 9:30 PM ET: The phrase “VP Gore’s keynote address is closed to the press” has disappeared from the official CTIA Web site, though the speech announcement still says “Photography, recording, webcasting and any other reproduction of Vice President Al Gore’s speaking appearance is strictly prohibited.” Did their policy change? Unfortunately, it’s 9:30 at night on a Friday, so we may have to wait a few days to find out.
“Any other reproduction” would seem to indicate a ban, and the CTIA website includes a number of passes eligible for Gore’s event — but no mention of media passes.
Why ban the media as a standard part of the speaking contract? I’d like to say because Gore’s worried that they’ll call him out on his poor science and hysterical hyperbole, but we haven’t seen much evidence that they want to do that when they do cover him. For now, we’ll just chalk it up to the why-can’t-I-just-eat-my-waffle mentality that leading Democrats exhibit to their buddies in the press.

hawksruleva on March 23, 2009 at 11:27 AM
Obama did not want the press to see him revert to Chicago street language or he does not want them to know anything he said to the Black Press.
Gore realizes that his theory is losing its’ popularity and he wants to hold on to his power for as long as he can.

Gore is a bore we all adore
But no one can question ‘ol Sir Al Gore
He’s bolted, locked and changed the door
Cause the press has made him sore!

I suppose there is always the fear that one member of the press will report something of true value. Even though the whole of the press is pro-liberal, there is always that risk.
Also, if the press were to report verbatim the Gore speech, non-Gore people will have access to the information, via the news reports, and use it to further discredit him.

The Democrats take the press for granted because they can. They don’t need to waste any effort trying to woo them, they are already as in the tank as they can be.
zmdavid on March 23, 2009 at 11:35 AM
They don’t ban ALL press, they just control the message by hand-picking the press based on what they’re trying to accomplish. The MSM then picks up the slanted story.
marklmail on March 23, 2009 at 11:36 AM
I always thought Al Gore’s reason was a more practical one. If everyone knew what he was saying at his speeches because the content was reported on, and likely posted to YouTube, then it would be harder for him to get people to pay big bucks to see him speak.
And I can think of at least two reasons for that…

Algore and Foghorn Leghorn were twins hatched from the same egg. All talk, I say, all talk and no substance.
I invite algore to come up to Maine and shovel out the 2 feet of snow still covering my front and back yard. It’s great exercise, and maybe he’ll lose that spare tire he’s been toting around.
ErinF on March 23, 2009 at 11:39 AM
You are correct, Sir. A liberal blogger and a global warming interest group will go, prepare a press release and a choice sound bite of Gore’s speech, and release it. The liberal press will just run with the press release as if it were a story.

Gore is, unfortunately, coming to town this week to give his speech. Tell the press to come to ETSU – they can get in there.
ladyingray on March 23, 2009 at 11:42 AM
ok, so black reporters want to give an award and hang out with Barack Obama and you’re confused?
Guess what color most of the press not directly affiliated with the black reporters is.

Gore’s afraid he’ll be called on the adhesive-free non-toxic carpet for not knowing what he is talking about. Those pesky scholared scientists just seem to get in the way of his message. In Obama’s case, he’s startinng to figure out that the intellectual level of right-leaning or conservative voters is a lot higher than he expected. Surprise, surprise, not everyone in the US has the smarts of a fourth-grader, Mr. President.

“Why ban the media?” Knowing Gore, MONEY. Probably thinks there’s a market out there for CD’s of his speeches. You also have the love-hate thing with the press. The more you treat them like shit, the more they love you.
GarandFan on March 23, 2009 at 12:30 PM
In Prompterbama’s case, I think if anything happens in the White House, it would be considered the people’s business and the press should cover it. I’m talking about events, not meetings about policy but any public meeting held at the White House should be public. What are they trying to hide? maybe Prompterbama wants to give his Black Journalist buddies an exclusive? if that’s the case, then have the meeting in the Oval office and leave it at that.
In Al Gore’s case, he is just a blubbering idiot. After that kid recorded his insane speech about the kids knowing more than their parents and that the kids shouldn;t listen to them, I think Al is a bit paranoid that the media will realize he says things in those speeches that are not very true. Al the world is getting cooler currently and please try not to bankrupt America with your global quest. Prompterbama is doing well on his own bankrupting America. It’s time to show what these bozos are really doing to our country..

I don’t think Al’s propaganda war is going well for him and even the press has stopped being helpful to Gore’s bogus cause. Democrats are all about spreading the wealth but only to those who promote their agenda, so no love for the press. So sad.
Maxx on March 23, 2009 at 12:35 PM
Obama and Al’gore are in the same camp. Either one can be brought down with a strong question. Obama was nailed on a debate about the time life gets value and he said it was above his pay grade to decide. Algore has enough skeptics that at any moment can ask a question, that will bring his 350 pound carbon footprint down.

I remember when you started out,
You were the best friend I ever knew.
I tried to meet you when you had your success,
But you had better things to do.
Now I bet that you’re losin’ count
Of the people that you used.
But now we’re gonna see the vicious side of you,
Mister Big.
You’ve got the say and the power.
Your minions grovel and cower.
But I see you, and I see me.
But you’re the big man now.
You got it, Mister Big.
Your followers kiss your hand,
And your slaves all at your feet.
Your minions serve your beck and call,
But they don’t compensate at all,
‘Cause inside, Mister Big’s very small.
When you were poor and knockin’ at the door,
You were really lots of fun.
But now you’re hot and you’re sittin’ on the top;
You’ve got no time for anyone.
You schemed and connived.
You pushed and you lied,
Till you at last became a star.
But now we’re gonna see the way you really are,
Mister Big.
Now your vict’ry is complete
And your battles are all won.
Your enemies and foes are all stacked up in rows,
Eliminated one by one.
You got it, Mister Big.

It’s actually interesting to compare how Michael Moore treated Fahrenheit 9/11 and what Gore is doing with his propaganda. Moore did everything he could to get his message out even encouraging piracy, because he believed that the more people saw it, the more it would convince. Gore’s treatment, on the other hand, gives the impression that he has little confidence in the same outcome if his message seen under a critical light.

marklmail on March 23, 2009 at 12:49 PM
Too obvious: Gore is sick and tired of people challenging his position on global warming. He is cagey and tone-deaf enough not to put himself in a position where a learned reporter (yes, there are one or two left surprisingly) comes at him with a science-based question that is at odds with Al Gore Trademark Hysteria.
Far better to move exclusively in a cloistered and isolated circle of fellow believers.

Gore got caught recently attempting to hi-jack data from CRED, trying to claim that the data somehow supported his baseless global warming claims. He had to pull the data from his slide presentation.
With all the billions of tax dollars that are being spent trying to support this scam, you would think Gore would have all the evidence he needs, but no, Gore still had to try to steal other people’s data to try and prop up his crackpot hysterical claims.
