Video: Glenn Beck responds to Bill Maher, compares himself to Howard Beale

posted at 8:14 pm on March 23, 2009 by Allahpundit

You’ll have to wait awhile for the reply to Maher — a long, long, long while — but it’s here, tucked away at the end of a 14-minute disquisition on … all kinds of stuff, really. Whatever you may think of the man, he’s touched a nerve: On Friday, he was number one in all of cable news in the coveted 25-54 demo, ahead even of Bill O’Reilly. With ratings like that, I don’t know how Fox can afford to keep him out of prime time. I’m expecting the announcement any day now that Special Report will be moving to 5 p.m., Shep to 6, and Beck to 7 to lead in to the Factor. God only knows what ratings he’d do with a real audience.

Exit question: Glenn Beck = Beale + Oprah + your crazy uncle?

Glenn is the man. I started watching him when he was on over at HLN. Been a fan of his ever since. I knew he would knock Bill out of 1st place once he got on Fox. Move him to the leadoff spot for Bill and the rest of the night’s shows and you are talking a real ratings bonanza for Fox. Wanna buy some ad time?

cjs1943 on March 23, 2009 at 10:25 PM

In the last two years that I have listen to him on radio- I am finding a lot of his opinions to be fair and accurate.
God Bless you Glenn Beck for your stance

hawkman on March 23, 2009 at 10:28 PM

I like Beck.

But Savage has some very interesting things to say as well. And it’s too bad he doesn’t get more credit for some of his stuff.

A lot of the things he’s said have come to pass.

BowHuntingTexas on March 23, 2009 at 10:30 PM

Most of them care. They just don’t feel the need to constantly remind you of how much they care, and they dont use that caring as an excuse to behave in any way they please.

Proud Rino on March 23, 2009 at 10:01 PM

This guy must have you lefty’s scared to death, or you and a couple other trolls wouldn’t be carrying on the way you do everytime his name is mention.

If you don’t like him, turn him off, don’t watch, change the channel. Or are you another one of those folks who scream “Fox is bad for you, their crazy over there” but have never even watched? You don’t have to answer, we already know who you are and what you think.

And if you dislike him so much, do us all a favor, and stay out of the threads and stop stirring the pot. You’re boring and sound like the rest of my whiny liberal friends.

Knucklehead on March 23, 2009 at 10:31 PM

Deciding how to arrange prime time programming in order to maximize viewership when Fox already blows all the rest of the cable news networks out of the water in ratings consistently . . . What a “problem” to have!!?

I’ll bet the prima donnas, O’Reilly and Hannity, are “acting out” their sense of vulnerability on the sets pretty much daily. Shep probably has a whisper campaign going where the catch phrase is “I’m avaible.” Greta is flexible and easily moved, if necessary.

I’d suggest Baier 6pm, Hannity 7 pm, O’Reilly 8pm, Beck 9pm, and Greta 10 pm. Whatever is decided, some very big egos will be bruised when Beck moves to prime time.

If Beck makes it to any of the 7pm to 10pm slots, I’ll bet he overwhelmingly wallops the rest of his colleagues in ratings.

This country is close to insanity, if not insane.

It’s close to a war, if not a war, between people who demand what others have earned just because they have it, and people who want to be left alone.

And I’m on Glenn Beck’s side.

Thank God for him and Rush.

Glenn is constantly saying how hes the 3rd most listened to talk show host. I wish he were 2nd, he deserves it! He’s funnier and more entertaining, than Hannity who I think, really gets tiresome to listen to.
Hannity’s shtick was he was a radio host who suddenly got a TV show. then his radio show went up in the ratings but Glenn has always been better these current ratings show that.
so its not just my opinion…

…and all these libs talking scared about Glenn is just going to make his rating higher. I mean even if you are a Lib you are going to hear “the guy sounds like Howard Beale” and thats going to make you want to see the foaming mouthed guy on TV. I think thats going to win him even more converts to his fandom. because what he says isn’t right or left its just common sense.

WastelandMan on March 23, 2009 at 10:39 PM

Yes, it’s that, or it might be that he picked up on the fact that nobody ever lost money predicting the end is nigh, and he decided to use uninformed people’s fear and uncertainty about the future of their country to sell some stuff.

Proud Rino on March 23, 2009 at 9:53 PM

I wish I would have listened to Beck a couple years ago when he said to put your 401K’s somewhere safe. In the words of Maxwell Smart, “I came this close” to actually moving my $ but decided at the time he was probably nuts, how could things actually get as bad as he was saying? Well, things did get as bad as he was saying & I would have saved a bundle if I would have listened to him.

P.S. I really hate it when people quote other people but don’t include the actual quotes or when people give quotes but don’t say who they’re quoting. I’m just sayin’!
By the way, most of the “stuff” these guys sell, the proceeds normally go to charity.

For that reason alone I hold back in responding to his shows, neither having knee-jerk reactions, nor blindly accepting all that he covers as being hard core facts. Usually I follow up with independent research, and listen to other Conservative Pundits’ opinions to see in they are also on the same track.

We’re talking about debating, not continually posting that “he’s just a big cry baby yada yada yada”. And your inability to debate what the man is all about is proof that you’ve never really listened to him.

Glenn Beck has been talking about the chaos going on down on the Mexican border for a long time while the rest of the world ignored it. He even admitted that CNN had put the boots to him on that subject and told him not to discuss it.

Have you noticed, since he moved to Fox, the rest of the media is finally picking up the story? But I know you wouldn’t know that because you’ve never listened or tuned in.

Knucklehead on March 23, 2009 at 10:49 PM

WastelandMan

Yeah, I’ve been watching him since his show started on HLN. I don’t agree with many posters who believe that he insincerely latches on to his themes to drive ratings. He’s been looking ahead, even in the best of times, and calling the economic downfall pretty accurately.

Even though I disagree with him often, he sticks with what he believes and doesn’t waiver (unlike Bill O who sold himself begging for an interview with Obama). To me, Hannity is tiresome and redundant at best. I get the sense that Beck is honest. If he lost everything and found himself back with a limited syndicated radio program, I think he would still be exactly the same.

Doesn’t bother me that he cries, seen him live in a theater in St. Louis and he was hilarious. The frustrations he feel about this country are the same that a lot of us feel, he is just brave enough to let it all hang out and let us decide what to do.

Glenn on his radio show advertises that he is #3 and proud to be. I assume he means Rush and Sean and then Glenn.
He doesn’t cry all the time. He just leaks once in a while. It’s OK because I feel the same way about the things that touches him.

I love it when he basically called K.O. egotistic for bragging about going to Cornell Univ. It was great when he talked about his own self education and going to book stores. It is what I have been saying for a long time. Anyone and I mean anyone can become educated in America. We have book stores, libraries, on the job training, internships, home schooling, trade schools, Internet education. You can find out anything you want to know in the 21st century. There are Americans who have gotten brokers license or have passed the BAR without setting foot inside a class room. The truth is, the only thing you need to become educated in America is a desire and motivation to be educated. Sometimes the education establishment seems stuck in the pre-information age and unable to change. Entrenched in politics and addicted to government funding they have become more of a liability than a strength. More and more of America’s best, brightest, and most successful people seem to have avoided the government educational establishment.

Glenn Beck is telling you what he truely believes. He’s right in what he says. I mean, look at half of the posts here. Everyone is trying to figure out what he believes or what cause he’s in, or what party he’s working for. Is he like Limbaugh? Is he the leader of the Republican Party? Is he just yakking for ratings? Listen to him again. You’ll see that he actually cares about this country. He’s not about power or ratings or being buddy buddy with the “power elite”. He’s just a guy who cares about America and comes across as very sincere. I like him and I wish he were my neighbor.

He is Angry but so am I lately. I hope Beck makes it big. He deserves it.

sheebe on March 24, 2009 at 1:49 AM

I like Glenn, I really do, but he is all over the place emotionally and his depth of knowledge about most subjects is shallow at best.
He gets almost hysterical about the political and economic situation and then doesn’t focus or try to do anything constructive with all that emotion.

Rush doesn’t make these mistakes.
He knows the number one priority right now is to fight Obama’s Socialist/Marxist agenda that threatens to destroy this country.

Beck just wants to muster a populist army and then…what?
He’ll tell you in his next show, maybe.
Or on September 12 or “soon.”
Meanwhile, the bad stuff is going down in Washington NOW.

Said like someone who hasn’t listened to or watched Glenn’s show very much. His recently announced 9-12 Project has grown to over 225,000 members in just over 2 weeks, and it is not only encouraging those members to Stand Up and Lead, but it is also providing tools and teaching to point members in the right direction. Specifically to get out there and MeetUp at We Surround Them gatherings (over 17,000 Becks fans at that link in NY,NY of all places).

I just became one of his 74,000 fans on Facebook. There are at least 2 other Beck fan groups on FB with thousands of members too. He wrote a well-researched and funny best seller challenging Al Gore and the global warming freaks. Last fall he turned his new novel “The Christmas Sweater” into a traveling one-man-act and sold out venues across the country with a play about family values(!). I tried to get in 2 theaters here in Sarasota that were broadcasting one of the shows live, but they were both sold out well in advance. I had to rent the dvd.

He has been telling people to prepare for hard times for a long time…buy gold, stock up, figure out your own principles and stand up and fight for them.

Rush has his base, and Hannity puts up good numbers, but Beck is creating a movement. I believe he is EXACTLY what conservatives need at this moment, a leader to organize the opposition to the Marxists that have taken over our great country. Conservatives are sorely lacking in talent that can create a nationwide grass-roots conservative movement…Beck is reaching out to those people who are looking for leadership.

…and the pitchforks on his set were awesome!

Now how is it again that he “doesn’t focus or try to do anything constructive with all that emotion“?

I encourage everyone to go sign-up and commit to standing up for your principles at The 9-12 Project. Let’s get this party started!

I think looking at things from a perspective of taste in personal style is a hang up a lot of people have. I love listening to Levin, Sowell, Krauthammer and Rush, but outside of Rush, the others are simple providing accurate (imo) intellectual commentary, most often after things are done. This does little to motivate people past the “thinky” part. Beck is the equivalent of the person who will motivate your ass off the recliner and take the “How to Get in Shape” book out of your hands and say “Enough of that analyzing it crap. Get off your ass and do something”.

Jenfidel on March 24, 2009 at 2:32 AM

I understand some people are turned off by Glenn’s emotions, but after so many years of the Rush bravado I think it’s cool to see someone not afraid to tear up.

Not trying to do something? He’s more action oriented than the other big names. He’s helped organize a big movement, given it a venue to communicate and mobilize, that is quite a bit more than any of the other talkers. I think they all contribute in some way, but currently Beck is doing the most in terms of action. He reminds me a bit of Sarah Palin in his populism and ability to draw a crowd.

I don’t listen to Rush anymore but I still respect him quite a bit for educating me on conservative philosophy, but he didn’t have a clue about what was coming with the economy, whereas Glenn read the tea leaves and was able predict this 2 years ago. I respectfully disagree that Beck does not have Rush’s brainpower, I think that Beck just doesn’t articulate things as well as Rush. Rush is a great communicator, whereas Glenn is good but certainly does not have a grasp of the language that Rush does.

Glenn also was able to see that Bush was consolidating too much power into the executive branch, he warned, as did other, that all power into the hands of one man is too much, and that it would be dangerous if we got a socialist in office who would abuse that power. Unfortunately that’s what’s happened.

Glenn is doing nothing now? What is Rush doing NOW as the socialist agenda moves forward? Smoking cigars and flying on his jet? :)
I’m just saying.

Question?.
Who would you choose if you had to pick one
1. Ron Paul or
2. Bernie Sanders

hawkman on March 23, 2009 at 10:24 PM

Ron “End The Fed” Paul. One of the few patriots in the Congress. He is the closest thing to a founding father that we have.

True_King on March 24, 2009 at 9:06 AM

I live in Tampa and remember when Glenn started his talk radio career. His show wasn’t political, it was more like Phil Hendry’s show. He would pull pranks on the 5 O’clock audience. Help guys who forgot their anniversary. Do skits. When he went national after 9/11, he became what he is today. It’s fun to watch him succeed and to say, “I remember him as a local radio guy in Tampa”. Keep up the fight Glenn!

Where are you at Anne? We’re trying to get a Tea Party going on the Western Slope.

thomasaur on March 23, 2009 at 9:31 PM

Good choice! On the Front Range you would probably get egged.

I’d have whole lot more respect for the tea partiers and galts gulchers if they had protested socialism and taxation without representation when Bush started this whole Econopalypse thingy.

Dear Friends, Don’t forget Neal Boortz in the pantheon of conservative voices.
We have a lot of flavors out there… enjoy and learn.

DrStock

Glenn at prime time for the West coast? YES!! I’d love to see him put on at 6 or 7 p.m. pst so my husband could see him after he gets home from work. We don’t have the equipment to record him at 3 in the afternoon. Glenn Beck is the best thing going for Fox since…who? He makes up for Brit leaving. I want to see Glenn shared with us in Washington State! We’re not all liberals, ya know.

I’m thinking put Greta on @ 5pm and give Beck the 10pm slot. Everyone else can stay the same. I don’t even know what Greta’s ratings are like. I rarely watch her.

Jarhead68 on March 24, 2009 at 11:14 AM

And I’m on Glenn Beck’s side.
Thank God for him and Rush.
notagool on March 23, 2009 at 10:35 PM

I’m with you. And I’ll add Mark Levin to the mix.

CarolynM on March 24, 2009 at 7:17 AM

Levin is the MAN…if you want to know about the Constitution, he’s your man. Read Men In Black. Can’t wait to read his new book. Go Levin!!!!

Jarhead68 on March 24, 2009 at 11:16 AM

Glenn Beck is not a carbon copy of Rush. No need to be. I appreciate them both and listen to them both without making unnecessary comparisons. Just glad they are there.

SKYFOX on March 24, 2009 at 11:27 AM

Bill is too populist. He’ll hover around his same levels. Beck is riding the anger that many of us feel, and more people will get mad sooner or later. Likely sooner. Move him to 7.

Paul is a loon and a crank!
The Founding Fathers, if they were alive, would cringe to hear you say this.

Jenfidel on March 24, 2009 at 11:47 AM

Shephard Smith was mentioning last night that if it was a difficult time slot for people to see him, they should DVR the show.

That about says it all for ‘ol Shep.

Rangeley on March 24, 2009 at 12:41 PM

But Savage has some very interesting things to say as well. And it’s too bad he doesn’t get more credit for some of his stuff.

Savage’s message isn’t the issue. It’s his delivery. He sees himself as the only intelligent person on the planet. If you disagree with him even a little, he gets worked up, starts yelling, and hangs up the phone. I usually catch about 10 minutes at the beginning of his show in my 11 minute commute but I just listen to see what he’ll get worked up about on any given day.

He’s absolutely correct in what he says. The way I see it is that this is just his schtick to be different from other conservative talk shows. Either that or living in SF for so long has made him a ticking timebomb.

I deleted LGF from my bookmarks about a week ago. Do they hate Christians over there now or something?

Kjeil on March 23, 2009 at 10:09 PM

I’ve been wondering the same thing. Seems like they’ve been taken over by Kos.

BTW, I watched Ron Paul on Beck yesterday. Makes a lot of sense all by himself.

The tactic of our enemies is to marginalize and demonize the people we listen to. They do this and we should expect it. There is nothing wrong with Beck.

This is something that gives me cold chills–the puppetmaster:

Read it and see if you can pick out the salient quotes.

Some interesting stuff from this guy.

ColdWarrior57 on March 24, 2009 at 2:13 PM

Opps….
on Glenn Beck, my kid ( in the us navy) asked me to watch Beck.
Best thing I did was to listen to my kid.
Beck is a breath of fresh air.

He doesn’t follow the Constitution–he just want you to think that he does.

Jenfidel on March 24, 2009 at 2:29 PM

Wow, that was powerful! Love Glenn Beck even if he is over the top at times. He just calls them as he sees it. That shot at Olbermann (“Cornell degree”) was priceless.

sarahpalinfan99 on March 24, 2009 at 2:51 PM

Beck is always on BOR on Fridays, and the last time I saw him on there BOR was actually trying to take credit for Beck doing so well, because, you know, he has him on his show promoting him. This is not going to sit too well with Bill, but I would love it if he were to take the top ratings. BOR always has to be too “fair and balanced” to the point of being ridiculous.

silvernana on March 24, 2009 at 4:04 PM

Really! BO’R has a very bad habit of sucking all the time out of an interview, as far as I’m concerned. I liked him several years back – even bought a The Spin Stops Here door mat. Ha! Anymore tho, I only want to watch him because of his guests while I’m in the kitchen cooking supper. Friday nites tho, I stop and run into the front room to catch Beck. Wish he’d bump O’R for that slot.

Posey on March 24, 2009 at 7:14 PM

Beck gets to the truth…and that is why the media will attack him.
