Video: Glenn Beck responds to Bill Maher, compares himself to Howard Beale
posted at 8:14 pm on March 23, 2009 by Allahpundit
You’ll have to wait awhile for the reply to Maher — a long, long, long while — but it’s here, tucked away at the end of a 14-minute disquisition on … all kinds of stuff, really. Whatever you may think of the man, he’s touched a nerve: On Friday, he was number one in all of cable news in the coveted 25-54 demo, ahead even of Bill O’Reilly. With ratings like that, I don’t know how Fox can afford to keep him out of prime time. I’m expecting the announcement any day now that Special Report will be moving to 5 p.m., Shep to 6, and Beck to 7 to lead in to the Factor. God only knows what ratings he’d do with a real audience.
Exit question: Glenn Beck = Beale + Oprah + your crazy uncle?

So you’re saying it’s right in both instances, or wrong in both instances?
Proud Rino on March 23, 2009 at 8:59 PM
Glenn Beck should replace Shep. Doesn’t matter either way for me, I DVR Beck every night and watch at my leisure, usually while Shep is on.
ctmom on March 23, 2009 at 9:00 PM
He smiles all the time. And he does a better job of mocking himself for his weepiness than anybody around here.
Jim Treacher on March 23, 2009 at 9:01 PM
If that’s the choice for Shep, then I choose ‘NOTHING’. Let Bret carry the water for national news.
petefrt on March 23, 2009 at 9:01 PM
I’m Glad he finally kinda cleared it up about who he is, since he has a TON of new viewers and needed to state that I think. I have been a radio and TV fan for years. good on Glenn. he’s worked hard and he has a resonant message! and he can bee funny as heck when he wants to be :) something O’reilly and Hannity have to have guests on to achieve.

Hey you know you’re doing something right when you start attracting the attention of the left wing media comedic goon squad (Maher, Stewart and Colbert). All Glenn needs now is for Olbermann to declare him the wort person in the world and he will be a made man.
But the thing I like the most about Glenn Beck is the fact that when he is ridiculed by others in the media he is not afraid to point it out or even make fun of himself to show that he doesn’t give a toss what they say about him.
Dreadnought223 on March 23, 2009 at 9:02 PM
would have been better at about 9 minutes than 15,
but its a pretty good phillipic.

Have you read “An Inconvenient Book”? Right on target, and a real hoot, as well.
uncivilized on March 23, 2009 at 9:03 PM
Speaking as a Ron Paul supporter, this is dramatically off base. It wasn’t his eloquence that got me (he’s certainly not the best speech giver,) but my reluctant realization that what really drew me, initially, to the Republican party wasn’t the idea we should be policing the world or dictating morality, but small government. And the natural consequence of this – more liberty.
Well, I just belong to YAL, its not actually my site ;) While I don’t live in Rangeley, I went there one summer and it was a great experience. Its a beautiful town.

Glenn Beck = awesome.
Only a matter of time before he’s in primetime. The only problem is that it will be tough for Fox to claim ‘fair and balanced’ running Beck, OReilly and Hannity back to back to back, even though Hannity’s the only actual Republican.
BadgerHawk on March 23, 2009 at 9:04 PM
I think he is awesome. Definitely going to be a player in our future GOP political field.

To be fair I also think Oprah is weird, over the top, and crazy but she’ does well in ratings. I think it is requirement that must be a little kooky 2 be on television.

And AP, you should post a link to the Jenga segment from today’s show.
BadgerHawk on March 23, 2009 at 9:05 PM
Yes, we wouldn’t want Fox to be disingenuous about that.
Proud Rino on March 23, 2009 at 9:06 PM
The problem is that Paul, with his insane movement, had little control over who chose to follow him. Yes, there were definitely some bad eggs in there, but that’s not a very good reason to completely write him off.

BadgerHawk on March 23, 2009 at 9:04 PM
Easily solved: Fox airs “The Protocols of Zion” or a collection of Hitler-speech footage once a week and that will suffice for the liberal point of view.
Bishop on March 23, 2009 at 9:10 PM
I believe he already has. It’s been a couple of years though now, I believe. Keith’s turned into even more of an a##hole since then.
NathanG on March 23, 2009 at 9:10 PM
AP – if he’s this strong at 5, building huge numbers for SR and Shep – why move him?
Bill and Hannity are still doing 2Mil. No one is hurting in the current line-up. Did it dawn on you that Beck is drawing massive numbers at five because he’s
in primetime?
Beck is a DVR king. There’s no need to move him.
budfox on March 23, 2009 at 9:11 PM
Beck connects because he speaks from his heart. You can trust him. That’s why he’s become the ratings darling. No agenda, just his naked thinking. Love him.
BTW – all these schedules are funny and wonder if we get a different feed. The order of shows is a bit different. You have to love Glenn’s ratings. Worst time ever. On the West Coast, Beck runs at 2pm – I have to DVR it. So, he’s finding an audience at the worst part of the day across the country. Today’s monologue is sheer genius!
I’ve always liked Sean Hannity and O’Reilly is an acquired taste. Cavuto IS the smartest guy in the room. And, Shep, while personable is HARDLY a conservative plus he begged the Feds to come rescue New Orleans during Katrina. To me, Shep did great coverage but contributed to the deep misinformation presented about the Bush Admins. role. Not sure I would miss him. Do miss ED Hill.
norcalgal on March 23, 2009 at 9:11 PM
Do you have anything of substance to say, like perhaps a rebuttal to his main thesis? Or is this snide, empty comment that does nothing more than expose your shallow, biased existence, the best you can offer?
Rod on March 23, 2009 at 9:11 PM
I thought he opposed the DOE for both reasons – I know in 1996 at least the Republican Platform called for it to be abolished due to its unconstitutionality.
Rangeley on March 23, 2009 at 9:12 PM
I disagree. The only one of the 3 that isnt Fair/Balanced is Hannity hands down. Well I guess you can say his “great american panel” kinda makes it balanced, but there is no balance to Hannity the person. I like him, but he gets old. There is nothing fair or balanced about him.
I dont mind BOR too much. Sometimes he ticks me off but over all he seems like a fair guy. Beck is fair and probably the most honest of all 3. He also seems more like an average guy than the others and doesnt have a holier than though persona.
The One Thing: Glenn is just the man. Sadly, he is going to start taking a lot of fire from the liberals soon. It just started with Mahar but I expect it to get worse. I am not saying I dont think Glenn can defend himself, it’s just that the media is pretty powerful. They seem to have a way at destroying people they chose to with ease.
bucsox79 on March 23, 2009 at 9:12 PM
I wonder when the leftwing hate campaign against Beck will start.
rockmom on March 23, 2009 at 9:13 PM
I’m in the process of reading it. It’s really pretty interesting.
I’ve gotta say, I don’t agree with every single thing that Glenn Beck says, but I do respect him because he knows he’s not perfect, corrects himself when he’s wrong about something passed on as fact in the media, and is very self-deprecating. He doesn’t care about what others like Olbermann think of him–he just basically tells them to shove it and goes about his merry way.
NathanG on March 23, 2009 at 9:13 PM
Whoops, I mean to frame that as “I’m in the process of reading it too.”
NathanG on March 23, 2009 at 9:15 PM
No, I don’t agree with EVERYTHING he says – but I do believe he sincerely believes everything he says, and that means a lot to me.

I’m no Ron Paul fan by any stretch of the imagination, but was very suprised last May when my Dad (liberal, liberal, liberal) kind of whispered across the table to me, “You know that guy’s kind of nutty but if you listen to what he has to say, he kind of makes sense”. I just thought to myself, “HUH???!!!”
Anyway, Glenn Beck rules & until recently he wouldn’t really have Ron Paul on the show at all, thought he was a kook. I just think he is interested in some things he has to say, particularly regarding economical issues. Some of that seems to make sense.

When Y2K came around, I made fun of the survivalist crowd thinking that the y2K bug was going to bring about societal collapse. I work in technology and thought I knew enough to feel pretty good about the world working on Jan 1st 2000.
But now, I’m not so sure that Beck is that far off. For some, it may be easy to pass Beck off as a kook, but….
I’ve listened to his show for a few years now. It’s not like I’ve got him plugged in 3 hours per day, but I’m a regular. I kind of tune him out when he gets all teary eyed but the fact is that a lot of what he’s been saying could happen have either happened or are happening.

Anyway, I think Beck’s been right on a lot of stuff that seemed far-fetched at one point. If even half of the things he’s now talking about come to pass, it’s not a very pleasant thought.
It would be really interesting to see if anyone has put together a Glenn Beck time machine to see what he was talking about 12 months ago and if those things have come about.
And hey, if it takes a guy like Beck to get Democrats, Republicans & Independents to get mad as hell, I’m all for it.

The Internet is a global network of interconnected computers, enabling users to share information along multiple channels.
and
The movement of information in the Internet is achieved via a system of interconnected computer networks that share data by packet switching using the standardized Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP). It is a “network of networks” that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope that are linked by copper wires, fiber-optic cables, wireless connections, and other technologies.
So…where’s the tubes???
uncivilized on March 23, 2009 at 9:32 PM

thomasaur on March 23, 2009 at 9:33 PM
It’s a joke. Bush called the internet “The internets” once. I was saying you didn’t understand how “the internet” worked, but then I referred to it in the plural, and the internet is not plural. Hence, the irony.
Then because you didn’t get that joke, I tried to follow it up with “It’s a series of tubes,” because Ted Stevens compared the Internet to a series of tubes and not, as he vehemently explained, a “big truck.”
Just a joke, dude.

The whole world is wanting to move away from the dollar.
As far as China goes, you should be much more afraid of the fact that they own this county just like a mafia loan shark owns his clients.
Think about it. When you buy a house or car or anything on credit, who actually owns what you “purchased”? It ain’t you.
Obama is selling this county to China. How’s that make you feel?

Glenn Beck is hilarious and pretty down to earth on the radio. He may not be right all the time, but he’s always entertaining.
John Stewart is less cerebral than him by a mile. And Beck isn’t a mouthpiece for any administration.
Asher on March 23, 2009 at 10:21 PM
Glenn Beck, early in this particular video, says that some people don’t like his style, and says that’s okay, there are other shows on TV, watch them.
Sounds like he’s a really tolerant guy when it comes to understanding that not everyone will take to his style of addressing the economic crisis, political turmoil, and such.
But I remember back when his show first started, and he was going hot and heavy into “Chicken Little” mode with the sky falling all around us, to the point where he actually had a special show which projected us forward in time to, I believe, 2014, after the whole world had blown up figuratively speaking. He had guest commentators analyzing what had happened and how we got there, and such.
The Libs play that game to perfection, and frankly, I have learned to immediately not trust anyone using fear tactics to that extreme and playing Chicken Little games.
Long way of getting to my point, sorry. What Glenn says in this video was similar to something he said back when he was going way over the top with the Chicken Little scenarios, and around that time he made a guest appearance on Red Eye.
But what he said on Red Eye was slightly different. He mentioned that not everyone liked his sky is falling style, and then he looked at the camera and said: “Sucks to be you! Turn the channel!”
On the one hand he’s so tolerant and understanding, yet early on he literally dissed anyone who was not comfortable with his approach to dealing with the crises we’re faced with under this current administration.
For that reason alone I hold back in responding to his shows, neither having knee-jerk reactions, nor blindly accepting all that he covers as being hard core facts. Usually I follow up with independent research, and listen to other Conservative Pundits’ opinions to see in they are also on the same track.
