Video: Glenn Beck responds to Bill Maher, compares himself to Howard Beale
posted at 8:14 pm on March 23, 2009 by Allahpundit
You’ll have to wait awhile for the reply to Maher — a long, long, long while — but it’s here, tucked away at the end of a 14-minute disquisition on … all kinds of stuff, really. Whatever you may think of the man, he’s touched a nerve: On Friday, he was number one in all of cable news in the coveted 25-54 demo, ahead even of Bill O’Reilly. With ratings like that, I don’t know how Fox can afford to keep him out of prime time. I’m expecting the announcement any day now that Special Report will be moving to 5 p.m., Shep to 6, and Beck to 7 to lead in to the Factor. God only knows what ratings he’d do with a real audience.
Exit question: Glenn Beck = Beale + Oprah + your crazy uncle?

Maher made it much more possible for bush to be whacked, using his logic.
jp on March 23, 2009 at 8:17 PM
And then they can dump Hannity and let Greg Gutfeld take over the 9 o’clock slot.
SteakRules on March 23, 2009 at 8:18 PM
AP even better, move Beck to 7 and get rid of that extra hour of Shep. One hour of Shep is more then enough. Frankly, Fox would be better off without Shep. There I said it. Shep sucks.
Lance Murdock on March 23, 2009 at 8:18 PM

Stop talking to Bill Maher.
He’s about as elevating as a scab.
Stop picking at it.
profitsbeard on March 23, 2009 at 8:19 PM
Eh, Fox likes their round up of angry right commentators. They should just move RED EYE to 11:00pm. Gutfeld would kill Leno and Letterman in the 11:30 slot. Too bad they won’t.

I’d love to know what O’Reilly thinks of Glen.

Not having to pay Ms. Shep’s cosmetic bill would itself justify canning him.
Bishop on March 23, 2009 at 8:21 PM
Wow, a Glenn Beck post by Allah and it’s not baseless mocking!
Anyway, you’re right here:
But I think he should take Hannity’s spot, and Hannity can bump Greta. She can leave or have 5pm if she wants.
I would say Beck should take over 8 and bump O’Reilly and Hannity both back, but O’Reilly has done too much for the network, he’ll own 8pm until he retires.
RightWinged on March 23, 2009 at 8:22 PM
Has this man done one show where he isn’t wringing his hands and weeping bitterly? Please tell me there is documented proof that he once smiled.

I’m watching BOR right now and he’s opening a can of whoopa$$ on Juan Williams and Mary K. Ham for being too tough on TOTUS. Disgusting, I tell ya.
Beck is my new hero, move him to BOR’s timeslot, put “I drive a Chevy Tahoe Hybid” Hannity on at midnight, his new format stinks to high heaven. I’m convinced Beck will catch on with the American Idol crowd.
Knucklehead on March 23, 2009 at 8:25 PM
I agree with the others. Get rid of Shep. I can’t stand that guy. It will definitely hurt the cosmetic industry, but I’m willing to accept that.

Can’t get rid of Shep. He’s their national news guy. It’s 6 p.m. or nothing.
Allahpundit on March 23, 2009 at 8:29 PM
Naaaaah — get rid of Hannity and O’Reilly, two of the biggest hacks anywhere. Bring in Levin, and give Beck prime time.
Beck has become a voice for many of us who feel like those who watched Beale in the movie.
What Beck is saying in this monologue is a whole hell of a lot more than “all kinds of stuff, really.”
I’m mad as hell, and I don’t want some namby-pamby babbler who caves when Osama Obama gives him an interview or a shill lapping at Gingrich’s shoes.
I’m not sure Beck is as good as he seems at the moment, but the mere fact that he’s not asking us to believe in him but to listen says a lot for him.
Too bad the incompetent child-president can’t manage a fraction of Beck’s honesty.
MrScribbler on March 23, 2009 at 8:29 PM
Move Shep to 5 and keep Special Report at 6
RedSoxNation on March 23, 2009 at 8:29 PM

Is 7 p.m. the time Hardball is on? Does that Fox News will give MSNBC a bigger whooping?
terryannonline on March 23, 2009 at 8:31 PM
I enjoy Beck’s show mainly because it is cathartic.
Also, it is great to see someone and say, “Ive finally found someone who would be more hated at a cocktail party than me!”
My main bone to pick is that he treats Ron Paul like a god instead of the kook he is.

I don’t have cable TV, and don’t want it, but Glenn Beck is, from what little here and there I have caught of him on the radio, a strange man, who seems to phase in and out of reality. I think both he and Obama need to be frequently asked, “Are you punch-drunk?” But then again, maybe they are both just comedians playing to an audience to afraid to laugh.
MB4 on March 23, 2009 at 8:36 PM
The Truth will always win in the end, that’s why Beck has so much credibility and is building a real following. He didn’t drink the Republican kool aid when it was popular to do so. He called out the Pubs when they were doing all kinds of anti-conservative stuff while everyone here was rationalizing it.
The people who seek honesty always run to the truth, and Beck is one of the few.
He really needs to pick it up on the New World Order though.
True_King on March 23, 2009 at 8:36 PM
Is it me or has Juan Williams overdosing the obama kool-aid? He used to make sense, now I just want to throw my shoe through the television at him.
I agree, Hannity-I miss Colmes. Need him to complete the show.
Knucklehead, you’re gonna have to share Glenn. There’s plenty to go around…..lol

Glen’s message is at the right place at the right time – in better times – he probably wouldn’t amount to much – but now.
See … he realizes that there are no longer ANY checks or balances in American government. Executive and Legislative Branches taken by radicals – Republicans all but extinct. Judicial system firmly in the hand of liberal judges except for the tippy top …
And a press that has become a propaganda machine for the regime.
This is not America – Glen knows it, the people know it, hell even the guys on the other side are a bit uncomfortable with it – but this is why Glen is popular now.
HondaV65 on March 23, 2009 at 8:36 PM
Not sure how Hannity’s doing as it is, but I definitely liked the show better when Alan Colmes was on with him. I don’t like Colmes, but at least there was some give and take.

Rangeley on March 23, 2009 at 8:38 PM
No, it’s kooky to say that the feds can’t do something unless it is literally listed in the Constitution (i.e. he ignores the commerce clause). It’s kooky to want to go back to the deflationary gold standard. It’s kooky to believe ehat the North American Union is a reality. Etc etc etc.
For example, today Paul said on Beck that “we’re already bankrupt” and he was dead serious.
Nessuno on March 23, 2009 at 8:38 PM
Ron Paul is no kook, sure he is a little goofy, but he is probably the most honest pol in Washington.

Allah, I think your time-slot switch thing might come true. For Beck to get those ratings at 5pm is incredible, especially compared to the other channels. He is up against big names like Wolf Blitzer and Chris Matthews, yet he beats every other channel combined.
And you missed the best part of today’s show, the jenga game, it went on for like 20 minutes. He was actually playing jenga while talking about a double murder and gun control, only on Beck.
Complete7 on March 23, 2009 at 8:41 PM
Yep, we had big ralley on Wall Street today, the Boy King is feeling cocky tonight. Time to make a new plan and take on another celebrity/private citizen so no one will notice when it tanks again on Friday.

NO WAY AP!!! Bret is thousand times better then Shap. Bret poo has more talent then in Shep’s whole body. Plus, Brit is still alive and would never aloud for that to happen. One last thing, the ratings for Special Report have double since Bret has taken over, so, why stop a good thing.
Lance Murdock on March 23, 2009 at 8:42 PM
Too much kool aid. We are in serious debt, we can’t pay the bills without having the Fed print money. We aren’t bankrupt?

He is that. Not as much as, say, Kuchinich, but a kook, nonetheless.

Careful, Bishop. Hot Air’s favorite Pseudo-RINO, Proud Rino, has a hissy when you imply less-than-manly-man-ness about a Lib.
Patrick S on March 23, 2009 at 8:45 PM
He’s kooky in some ways. In other ways, he’s far more conservative than most other “conservatives” in Congress.
MadisonConservative on March 23, 2009 at 8:45 PM
The Federal government only has the powers delegated to it in the Constitution – that is made very clear in the 10th Amendment. Any powers not delegated to it, fall to the states or the people. This isn’t kooky, its a very basic concept and one which Reagan believed (he opposed the Department of Education on these grounds,) one which Goldwater believed, right on down the line. Several states have passed resolutions re-affirming this, in fact, and several more have legislation pending.
Its not kooky to want a currency backed by something. When a currency is backed by nothing, and merely depends on the whims of the government, it enables the government to print and print and print itself into messes like its in today, in order to prop up massive welfare and social programs, massive overseas spending, etc…
As to the other things, no he doesn’t believe in the “North American Union,” he does however oppose the idea of one, and opposes things that could be used as stepping stools towards one in the same way the EU didn’t just come out of nowhere. It was the result of incremental steps over several decades.
Rangeley on March 23, 2009 at 8:46 PM
Nope. We’d be bankrupt when we can no longer afford to pay our bills. So, basically, as long as we can pay the interest on the bonds we are issuing and people buy those bonds then we are not bankrupt.
Don’t get me wrong, things look terrible and Obama seems absolutely dead set on driving us into bankruptcy for some really mysterious reason, but we’re not there yet.

Treating someone with respect is not ‘treating them like a god’. Beck generally thinks Paul is a bit kooky on most things but he appreciates his opinion on some. If you don’t watch and listen to Beck on a regular basis you probably don’t get him. I like him because he is on “OUR” side and not any political party’s side.

For a long time, I let Charles Johnson convince me that Ron Paul was a kook. Then I realized that CJ was actually the kook. Ron Paul is not the most ideal politician, and isolationism is probably dangerous, but its less dangerous, IMO, than bankrupting our entire country and putting generations of Americans in debt. He wouldn’t be my first choice for Prez, but I would certainly vote for Paul before I’d vote for Obama.
jimmy the notable on March 23, 2009 at 8:49 PM
If someone can’t pay back their debts, but was in possession of a printing press, are they really any less bankrupt if they have to make their own money to pay off their debts? I’m not convinced the answer is yes.
Rangeley on March 23, 2009 at 8:50 PM
Also, I try not to judge Paul by the caliber of people he attracts.
jimmy the notable on March 23, 2009 at 8:50 PM
Would be tough to do while he’s on the radio at that time.
O’Reilly and Hannity aren’t going anywhere from their current slots. Like them or not they helped put FNC on the map from the get-go, the network has a major investment in them and they’re still crushing the competition in their time slots.
This seems to be the best spot for Beck, for now. They spent years switching hosts in and out of that slot and now seem to have that settled for a good while. Besides, he just started, so let the audience grow more and then make a decision down the road. It’s not like he’s on at 5 am and if people can’t tune in then they can TiVo it.

Ron Paul is for Ron Paul. He uses similar tactics as Obama. His followers are just as mesmerized in their ways as Obama’s followers. RP wraps himself in his percieved version of the constitution. Believing that the feds are limited to enumerated powers is an interpretation I share. But Reagan didn’t want the Dep of Ed should be dismantled because it is unconstitutionalA; he wanted it gone because it was bad policy. Most of the growth of the federal government has come on the back of spending mandates, which includes education. And like it or not, the federal government can legally spend money on anything it wants so long as it does so equally. This view is universally shared by legal scholars of every stripe, but not kooks of Paul’s stripe.
As for the dollar, it’s value is backed by the labor of the American people. Sound to metaphysical? Well, think on this: what is the value of gold backed by? Answer: the desire for shiny things.
Linking the dollar to gold does solve the printing press problem, but creates a whole new basket of potential disasters. The price of gold fluctuates based on the supply of it and our demand for shiny things, which can cause a number of distortions and disasters, including hugely destructive deflation.
And if you think it protects you from government manipulation, think again. FDR decided he would just nationalize the gold market and set the price of gold himself. Feel safer?
