Exactly. It's a little unfair to compare Sanford and Palin head to head, with the different systems (Alaska's energy production offers massive revenues), but the fact is Alaska was making money in the "high" years for oil. Palin, as well as previous governors and other politicians, have facilitated saving some of the surplus. It's not Sanford's fault, but I don't think SC has the same kind of $ lying around in reserve accounts.

Direct point, Poptech- If you have $1 million in a savings account, have been earning $100,000 a year from your job, but unexpectedly have to take a leave for 3 months and only make $75,000 this year- Are you being "fiscally irresponsible" by drawing $25,000 out of your savings to meet your family's needs?

Palin is by no means a perfect govt. official. She's a lot better than your "resume" says, though.

Re: the operational shortfall in AK and Poptech's link, yes, the state is seeing a decrease in expected income, but if you continue to read the article the state isn't going into debt, it's using its surplus from prior years to cover the difference.

Where did that surplus come from? I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest prior-year surpluses.

What is the Alaska state government's indebtedness? Zero. They could write a check to cover a third of California's debt and still have money left over.

Compared to the Feds, she's still doing a better job. Is she an arch-conservative budget hound making the state reuse staples? No. But when it comes down to it she makes the Reader of the Free World look like a spendthrift, which is kind of the point.

I have nothing against Mitt Romney, it's just that he can't even attract enough people to keep a building warm, and she packed events literally all over the country. Independents are getting a good look at the liberal-left alternative, watching Obama's approval ratings tank suggests to me that this isn't the change they're looking for, either. Her ability to get people to watch is unquestioned. What will matter over the next few years is her ability to say something when she has that attention, and that's something that can be improved with practice. I thought she was a little wet behind the ears to be picked by McCain, but for a Class A ballplayer at The Show she did pretty well. More experience will only make her better.

Getting back to the actual topic of this thread, Sanford lacks name recognition at this point. He also lacks a dedicated cadre of hate-mongering trolls to ridicule his every thought, word and deed, which may indicate that he is not considered a significant player yet. I hope there will be at least several good candidates to stand for election in 2012 and he may well be one, as I believe will Sarah Palin.

It is not that simple…

Poptech on March 25, 2009 at 12:50 AM

But, obviously, you are. You bloviate, ad nauseum, about a Socialist paradise, about ANY spending at all, about qualifications while having none yourself. Your man Mitt falls victim to the same criticisms, but somehow escapes it in your Palin-centric dementia. By voting for Barr, you helped elect Obama, who is less "qualified", less accomplished, less knowledgable in actual governance, and far left of anybody we could have ever hoped to see in the White House. So, yes it, and you, are just that simple.

Contrast this with Alaska. Population growth has been rather extreme over the past few decades, and it continues to grow. Roads, power grids and other infrastructure is quite basic in much of the state compared to other states. A growing population in this relatively “new” state could justifiably require an increase in government spending, if the revenue is there to support it, to provide for additional growth in the future.

Comparing the tax climates in the states governed by Romney and Palin is rather enlightening as well, though neither deserves all the credit or blame for what they inherited.

It is not that simple...

"As governor, Palin has signed off on $402,000 to study the arctic fox; $154,000 for renovations to three gun clubs and $125,000 for the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum, state records show. Her budgets have funded $44,500 to spruce up a ski resort, $75,000 for the Arctic Thunder Air Show and $50,000 to improve a Little League field in the Mat-Su Valley near her hometown of Wasilla."

Um Romney was not Governor in 2007. Interesting how you are taking the budget of his democratic successor and comparing it to him.

Poptech on March 25, 2009 at 12:39 AM
Budget recommendation for fiscal year 2007. I didn't make up the figures. Anyway, that's not addressing the issue.

To dig a little deeper, how does a growing population impact the needs for government spending? Massachussetts has been a state since the revolution. Some population growth continues, but it is a relatively low amount and the budget has been built over time. Mass. is recognized as a high-tax state.

Contrast this with Alaska. Population growth has been rather extreme over the past few decades, and it continues to grow.
As far as Romney's record is concerned, I came across this:

ROMNEY INCREASED SPENDING

According To Romney’s Recommended Budgets, He Proposed Increasing Real Per Capita Government Spending By 7.77%. ...

Total Spending In Recommended Budgets Grew 22.2% Under Romney’s Watch, From $29.477 Billion In Fiscal 2003 To $36.021 Billion In Fiscal 2007. ...

What say you, Poptech? Looks like you might've misplaced a decimal in Mitt's record there.

I am saying that she fires up the GOP base while <strike>alienating</strike> attracting an <strike>large </strike> increasing percentage of independent voters. It is for that reason that Palin-related posts garner much interest on <strike>Hot Air</strike> the blogosphere and it is that for that same reason that she is <strike>not</strike> a viable national candidate.

Hmmm...and there's this I came across:

ROMNEY INCREASED SPENDING

According To Romney’s Recommended Budgets, He Proposed Increasing Real Per Capita Government Spending By 7.77%. (“Governor’s Annual Budget Recommendations, FY2003-FY2007,” http://www.mass.gov/bb/, Accessed 8/20/07; U.S. Census Bureau, "Annual Estimates Of The Population For The United States, Regions, And States And For Puerto Rico: April 1, 2000 To July 1, 2006," http://www.census.gov/popest/states/NST-ann-est.html, Accessed 8/20/07; Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Consumer Price Index – All Urban Consumers: 1997-2007," http://data.bls.gov/PDQ/servlet/SurveyOutputServlet, Accessed 8/20/07)

Total Spending In Recommended Budgets Grew 22.2% Under Romney’s Watch, From $29.477 Billion In Fiscal 2003 To $36.021 Billion In Fiscal 2007. (“Governor’s Annual Budget Recommendations, FY2003-FY2007,” http://www.mass.gov/bb/, Accessed 8/14/07)

ROMNEY FAILED TO CUT INCOME TAXES…

Romney Pledged To Reduce Income Tax Rate But Never Got The Job Done.

• Massachusetts Ballot Initiative From 2000, Which Was Passed With 60% Of Vote, Called To Reduce Income Tax Rate From 5.85% On “Wages And Salaries” To Flat 5% By 2003. (“State And Local,” USA Today, 11/8/00)

• The Gradual Reduction Of Income Tax Was Frozen At 5.3% In 2002. (Citizens For Limited Taxation, “April 15th And The Massachusetts Tax Burden,” Press Release, 4/15/05, http://www.cltg.org/cltg/clt2005/05-04-14_nr.htm, Accessed 8/15/07)

• Romney Urged For Complete Reduction To 5% As Was Called For By The 2000 Ballot Initiative But Failed. (Steve Marantz, “Gov Seizes On Revenue Rise,” Boston Herald, 5/4/04)

• Today, Income Tax Rate In Massachusetts Is Still 5.3%. (Federation of Tax Administrators Website, State Individual Income Taxes, http://www.taxadmin.org/FTA/rate/ind_inc.html, Accessed 8/15/07)

AND OPPOSED TAX CUTS

In 2006, Romney Opposed Gas Tax Relief Measure That Would Have Saved Massachusetts Motorists 21 Cents/Gallon During Summer Months. (Russell Nichols, “Bill Proposes Gas Tax Cut To Save 21 Cents A Gallon,” The Boston Globe, 5/11/06)

Romney Vetoed Senior Citizen Tax Break. (Scott Greenberger, “Romney Vows To Veto Seniors’ Tax Break,” The Boston Globe, 2/27/04)
From here, as long as we're doing copy-and-paste jobs.

Romney:

- Spending only increased 2.22% over four years as Governor of Massachusetts (It only increased at all due to the liberal legislature overturning his vetoes)

Poptech on March 24, 2009 at 11:33 PM
What about tax increases (including increased "fees" and "surcharges")? How did he compare to, oh, Bill Weld in that regard? What about Romneycare?

People who use the beauty contest and newspaper issues as reasons for Palin not being qualified are wasting their time. Those are not good arguments and just make the person making them sound small and petty.

Scuba Dude on March 24, 2009 at 11:04 PM
I'd just like to see Poptech's defense of Romney's term as governor of Mass. in the light of his "conservative libertarian" views. He can tell us what he thinks is wrong with Palin, but he seems strangely silent about his man Mitt. Other than the fact that Mitt has an impressive resume, of course. Pffffft.

Actually, one of the most dishonest things on this thread is your "resume" schtick. You pick and choose what to list, and the "accomplishments" section of Palin's resume is a compilation of your negative opinions of her administration.

Or does your "resume" have the following section?

Poptech: Accomplishments

-Utilize mad computer skillz to post identical information in 14 consecutive blogs.

-Mask personal identity on Newsbusters by utilizing "I can't believe it's not butter" spokesman photo.

-Provide visual definition of "annoying troll" for conservative website.

LOL, good luck. Poop Tourette's never tries to prove his argument, he just cherry picks links that supports his "position". Thankfully it looks like Hot Air restricts links in comments, over at NB the links make up 90% of his posts, the remaining 10% is filled with responses like ROTFLMAO and the like.
