Too good to check: Palin robocalls being made in Iowa, New Hampshire?

posted at 7:29 pm on March 23, 2009 by Allahpundit

Doesn’t mean she’s responsible for them, but someone’s interested:

I wanted to let you know that I just received an interesting phone call. It was an automated poll and it asked the following questions:

1. Do you have a favorable opinion of Sarah Palin?

2. Gov. Palin thinks A, B, C, D & E do you agree with Gov. Palin?

3. Do you feel it is important that Gov. Palin is reelected as Gov. of Alaska?

The only two surefire GOP candidates for 2012, I think, are Huckabee and Sanford, the latter of whom is profiled in the Washington Independent today as the great Paulian fiscal conservative hope. Exit question to Palinites: Why Sarahcuda over Sanford? Make the case in the comments, if you can.

Blowback

Huckabee used these same states to spread vicious rumours about Mitt Romney in the Primary. So I would look at Huckabee or his suporters to find out who is busy with robo calling.

Back it up. Put your money where your mouth is. Palin fired a bunch of crooks while she was Chairman of the laska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. She defeated Murkowski for Governor by educating the public on his backroom dealings with oil companies. She proposed free market solutions to the natural gas pipeline that had been 30 years in dead end negotiations. AND SHE RUNS HER STATE BUREAUCRACY EFFECTIVELY.

If Palin was “unqalified” she wouldn’t have the highest approval rating of any US Governor at 64%.

As a comparison, Sanford has an approval rating of 49%. Romney didn’t even seek a second term.

You read the Doctrine and Covenants as poorly as you read the Bible. actually I dont know that really since I dont know you but that was one weak attempt and you look dumb.

An opinion piece from Salon? Let’s hear how Rolling Stone weighs in next.

I read this piece, too, interestingly borrowing its title from a Tina Fey rip off of the movie Heathers. It says Palin didn’t fire all those crooks in Alaska because of corruption but more from personal ambition.

That still beats the endless bribes accepted by Barack Obama and most of the Democratic party K Street hookers. Show me *any* politician with comparable reform achievements to Sarah Palin’s.

and just as bad … the McCain campaign’s inability to defend their VP candidate from the outright smears that were aimed at her.

joey24007 on March 24, 2009 at 12:28 PM

She has to live with the results of the campaign and the impression it left. Any campaign strategy for her in 2012 will need take steps to change that impression. If it doesn’t she’ll have enthusiastic supporters who can get her many delegates to the convention, and perhaps the nomination, but it is difficult to see how she persuades enough swing voters to get to 270 electoral votes.

Where did this myth originate from that Sarah Palin is some sort of snake-wrangling, tongue-speaking Pentacostal anyway? The way I understand it, she was christened a Catholic and her family attended the Pentacostal church in Wasilla because it was convenient and because they were friendly with other congregants. Anyone who has lived in a small town would understand this is not particularly unusual. Unless she’s converted, she’s STILL a Catholic, regardless of where she practices, and she now attends Wasilla Bible Church which to my understanding is non-denominational. She sounds like every other ordinary churchgoing Protestant I’ve ever met. I’d hardly label her an extremist.

No. She should pursue whatever goal she wants. If that is the White House, then she should go for it. However, strategically she needs to address the high unfavorable numbers that resulted from the 2008 campaign. In order to win she needs to persuade those voters who have their doubts in addition to stoking the enthusiasm of voters already convinced. If she only does the latter she’ll generate enthusiasm but not have a meaningful chance of winning.

Great, now we get to add Sanford’s resume to your cut-and-paste road show.

In point of fact, I think Sanford does have economic qualifications. His experience does not seem to merit the label “economic einstein,” however. Looking closer:

He graduated in 1983.
According to your information, in 1983-1988, he worked a few relatively short jobs in different businessess while completing an MBA. He had other business experience until 1992, when he started/founded his own real estate company. 3 years later (part of the time probably campaigning), he became a Congressman, served for 6 years, then ran for Gov.

He has some business experience, but the majority of his time since graduating college has been spent as a politician. His business gigs have generally been short-lived, except his current realty company (I think it was kickstarted by inherited property/wealth- not that there’s anything wrong with that).

I’d vote for him in a heartbeat over Obama. He’s got huge vulnerabilities in the charisma and stereotypical Republican (rich white Southerner, inherited money, family farm is a “plantation” in SC, etc.) departments.

I agree. Which begs the question: Why does Allah think Sanford is a “surefire” candidate for 2012? He hasn’t shown up once in a national GOP Primary poll, he has no money or charisma, and he is below 50% approval in his own state of South Carolina.

In the interest of accuracy, the Assembly of God is a Pentecostal church (largest one in U.S., just under 3,000,000 adherents). I don’t think Palin considers herself Pentecostal, and she is currently attending a nondenominational church instead of AG.

Oh, and the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement is among the fastest-growing branches of Christianity worldwide. It’s getting harder to paint it as a “fringe” movement.

I doubt you have read D&C. The section specifically say 7,000 years, but there is no mention of millions of years existance prior to that. That is your interpretation based on the word “temporal”, which is fine.

My point is this: Unlike you, I will not attack my politcal opponents based on their religuous beliefs. Given that you’re Romney supporter, I would be very careful in doing so. I actually voted for and supported Romney in 2008. I continously defended him against anti-LDS bigotry. I am now a strong Palin supporter, but I am saddened to see that Romney supporters would use the same tactics against her that many others used against Romney when he ran.

Funny to hear you speaking of trolling; given that you’re one of the worst anti-Palin trolls on HotAir.

Norwegian on March 24, 2009 at 1:23 PM

A suggestion: You know what would be a sweet addition to the Hotair posts? A squelch button. I’d really like to be able to squelch certain posters and be able to ignore their posts entirely.

Concerning Romney, I’ve never understood why some people love this guy. I was never very impressed with him during the primaries. I really don’t care about Mormonism, his conservativism just doesn’t impress me. There are much better conservative candidates. Keep in mind I’m from Michigan.

joey24007 on March 24, 2009 at 1:32 PM

I agree. Which begs the question: Why does Allah think Sanford is a “surefire” candidate for 2012? He hasn’t shown up once in a national GOP Primary poll, he has no money or charisma, and he is below 50% approval in his own state of South Carolina.

Norwegian on March 24, 2009 at 1:08 PM

This far out from the next election, I think all you can do is look for an intersection of desire, a rationale for running, and some minimum threshhold of plausibility. Sanford isn’t brimming with advantages, as you pointed out, but saying he’s a surefire candidate isn’t the same thing as suggesting he’s likely to win. He seems to be positioning himself to take a shot, and put together a rationale for a campaign. He doesn’t strike me as being terribly charismatic, but that’s a highly subjective judgement, and it’s awfully tough to predict what the primary voters will be looking for three years from now – and of course, that might be very different than what the general election voters are hungry for. If other things begin to fall into place for Sanford, and he can pull some big crowds and generate some excitement, he might not have much trouble getting the money he needs. If not, he’ll fizzle out, as so many other would-be candidates have done. It seems highly likely at this point he will make the effort, so I think it’s fair to call him a sure-fire candidate.

Likewise, Huckabee isn’t my cup of tea, but he’s obviously got the desire to run, and the resources to make himself plausible. The strength of his run last time guarantees him a spot at the starting line for the 2012 horse race, if he wants in – and he rather clearly does.

Palin seems less “sure fire” to me, simply because she might not want to do it. She has charisma, a proven ability to draw crowds and attract media attention, and no problem getting the money for a run together. I think she’s still mulling it over. I wouldn’t blame her for deciding not to go through the ordeal again, but I suspect she will – because people obviously want her to, and I think that matters to her. She’s also clearly appalled at what’s happening to the country, and seems like the kind of person who would have a hard time doing nothing about it.

If she’s realistic about admitting that damage was done to her last time out, and takes steps to correct it, I doubt she was fatally wounded in 2008. Most of the criticisms leveled at her last time around seem funnier and funnier with each passing week of disastrous Obama headlines. Think she would have blown off Gordon Brown and sent him home with a 25-pack of region-inappropriate DVDs of old movies? Does the silly attack on her wardrobe carry any weight after the fawning news stories of Michelle Obama swanking around at a top-shelf fashion show? Does anyone think she would have sat there giggling like a clueless idiot on “60 Minutes” and making jokes as her policies crashed the American economy? Can you see her floating trial balloons about making soldiers pay for their own health care, or smiling indulgently as squads of brownshirts were deployed to make people sign loyalty oaths to her?

Palin isn’t quite “surefire” yet, but a few more news cycles of Obama outrages might firm up her resolve. The one thing I can say with metaphysical certainty will not matter at all, to anyone, is some nitwit posting her resume 4000 times on the comment boards of a blog.

Doctor Zero on March 24, 2009 at 1:35 PM

Do the Palin bashers honestly think they are likely to sway her supporters to support their preferred candidate by calling them stupid, fools, blah, blah, blah,?

Actually some of the posts by the Romney/Huckabee/Barr supporters turn me off so much I would dismiss that candidate if only due to the nasty supporters they attract.

Guess we’ll all be enduring a second term of the Obama.

katiejane on March 24, 2009 at 1:35 PM

If Palin was “unqalified” she wouldn’t have the highest approval rating of any US Governor at 64%.

As a comparison, Sanford has an approval rating of 49%. Romney didn’t even seek a second term.

In sporting terms spectators come to the game to watch Sarah Palin perform in all her glory, eyes completely transfixed on her every word and gesture while she in on the field and even on the sidelines when time out is called.

Sanford, is an integral part of the team, one who performs an important role to advance the ball down the field and help the team win, but not somebody that most of the crowd would focus on during the game to derive a specific thrill, sudden epiphany or feel strongly enough to talk about in a bar after the game.

Obama’s win has reminded us once again that a thin resume and little executive experience won’t stop you from becoming President. Voters don’t choose a President based on resume/experience but on a combination of factors including likeability, policy positions, the state of the US economy, etc.(although a good resume can be helpful). Oftentimes voters are looking for outsiders and the candidate with less experience wins the election.

Some examples where the less experienced Presidential candidate won:

John Kennedy beat Richard Nixon
Jimmy Carter beat Gerald Ford
Bill Clinton beat George Bush I
George Bush II beat Al Gore (who had been VP for 8 years)
Obama beat McCain (and Hillary Clinton in the Dem primaries)

So the trolls can obsess about resumes but that is not what wins elections.

I wonder if Obama’s subpar performance so far based on his lack of experience has affected how evangelicals now feel about Sarah Palin and her experience in running for VP and being a competent governor who has rejected part of the stimulus package.

The problem with Poptech is that he always see things in static terms as if stats never change, viewpoints never shift, or improvement is not possible.

A few days ago I made a comment that I would hate to be Poptech’s teenage kid who was responsible for losing the state championship through carelessness, a miscalculation or error in judgment and then branded forever by Poptech as a perennial loser, despite becoming a professional player and being a top performer and an object of acclaim.

Poptech on March 24, 2009 at 1:11 PM

Are related family members different from unrelated family members? ;o) Maybe these people are just like the rest of us here. They’re perfectly nice, reasonable people until you start cackling at them incoherently and then the react accordingly. Which makes you the nut job.

In the interest of accuracy, the Assembly of God is a Pentecostal church (largest one in U.S., just under 3,000,000 adherents). I don’t think Palin considers herself Pentecostal, and she is currently attending a nondenominational church instead of AG.

That was my point in my original post but Poptart insists on dogmatically clinging to the myth that the governor is a snake wrangler.

Oh, and the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement is among the fastest-growing branches of Christianity worldwide. It’s getting harder to paint it as a “fringe” movement.

cs89 on March 24, 2009 at 1:21 PM

Interesting, I didn’t know that.

As I mentioned, I don’t personally know any fringe Pentacostals — those that I know are perfectly normal — though I’ve certainly heard the stereotypes, but I would imagine they have their share, just as every other denomination does. But by the same token, I am guessing the majority are ordinary, garden-variety, God-fearing Christians. Certainly nothing to fear.

This is what believe we are looking at: Obama is going all-in with his social engineering plan with the belief that the economy, while bad, isn’t going to be stuck in a long-term recession. He hopes that before the 2010 election, unemployment will improve as will the staock market–in spite of his plan–and if so, he will be able to take credit for it meaning a sweep of congress and easy 2012 re-election.

The republicans want the economy to stay the same or worse heading into 2010, knowing that if things are bad, they will be shoe-ins in 2010, and they can take credit for the turnaround in 2011 and beyond leading them back the WH in 2012…Sanford? Huck, Romney, Palin?…at that point it will all be about personality. My guess: Palin and Huck duke out.

Rose, newsflash… three years from today, the GOP nomination is likely to be wrapped up. Four years from now, we are (prayers up) likely to have a new President.

Fact is, SP has approximately 21 months to start turning around the electorate’s opinion of her, which, outside GOP, and more particularly, SoCon circles, is that she is a provincial hick.

JohnGalt23 on March 24, 2009 at 3:29 PM

joepub on March 24, 2009 at 3:11 PM

Gonna have to disagree with you. As a Republican, I don’t want the economy to be the same or worse. However, I think there’s a very good chance it will be.
Not an economist, but I don’t see any way out of this without at least hitting double-digit inflation by the end of his term.

I suspect we’ll have an economic “recovery,” with some wage inflation as well, but not enough to keep up with overall inflation. IOW, we’ll be making more money but be able to buy less with it.

Change!

Second, based on your argument a rookie starting QB has no business being a field general in the future if he threw 4 INT’s in his first game as a starter.

Well, why don’t we ask Drew Brees about that one. :)

I think your analogy is quite apt. Personally, as a football fan, I am strongly opposed to starting rookies at QB. More often than not, it ruins them, especially if you start them on a losing team.

Now, does that apply to SP? I don’t know. She’ll get another chance. But I would hope you would agree that if a QB tosses 4 INT’s in his first game, he better spend a helluva lot more time watching film.

And if you remember, Couric went to great lengths to mischaracterize Kissinger’s position of meeting with Iran.

And SP let her get away with it successfully. Rookie mistake.

And finally JohnGalt23 to ignore her many subsequent interviews,…

What subsequent interviews would you say she performed brilliantly in? I sure as hell didn’t see them, and if I didn’t, you can bet the average voter sure as hell didn’t.

…her solo performances before SRO crowds…

To continue the sports analogy, she can win at home. Champions win on the road and in neutral sites. She flailed in enemy territory.

Perhaps a competent and appealing conservative will step in to beat Obama or whoever comes after him. That person will not be Sarah Palin. doubt you have read D&C.

I have never busted somebody for their religious beliefs.
