Quotes of the day
posted at 10:35 pm on March 23, 2009 by Allahpundit
“In the midst of this bonfire of inanities, President Obama is pressing ahead with a $3.6 trillion budget, predicated on utterly unrealistic economic growth, even as the Congressional Budget Office is now projecting that this year’s deficit will soar past $1.8 trillion, 13 percent of the US economy. This would amount, as the Washington Post reports, to ‘the deepest well of red ink since the end of World War II.’ According to the Post, the CBO is warning, ominously, that the result of this kind of borrowing and spending could lead to an exponentially expanding national debt that would ‘exceed 82 percent of the overall economy by 2019.’”
President Obama came to office proclaiming that he aims to solve problems, not hand them on to our children. Most presidents say that sort of thing. But now we are in very dire straits, and that being the case, he will be held to account. It’s your legacy, sir, and let’s not hear any more about ‘inheriting the crisis.’ You asked for the job. Meanwhile, let us hope that his talent for mastering a sérieux financial crisis are not on a level with the Special Olympians of Wall Street, and Congress.”
***
“Thus, bipartisanship is of little political use to him now. As a rallying cry against the Bush administration, which pulled the policy needle to the right, it was extremely helpful. However, not any more. When the ‘old categories’ suddenly give you an opening, why ‘transcend’ them? Why court the other side, which will only slow you down and moderate your programs? Instead, the politically savvy move is to do exactly what Obama has done: stuff bipartisanship, see how much you can squeeze out of Congress before the next ‘correction,’ and get your name into the history books.
I expect politicians of both parties to do this. Their commitment to bipartisanship is typically situational: they praise it when they’re in the minority, then forget it when they’re in the majority. Of course, Obama promised to be above politics as usual. That’s why he pursued his party’s nomination against Hillary Clinton, whose experience was greater but who had the ‘taint’ of politics on her. Obama didn’t have the taint, and assured us he never would.

I saw this link over at Instapundit, from http://blogs.knoxnews.com/knx/silence/archives/2009/03/leaks_are_sprin.shtml” rel=”nofollow”>Michael Silence:
At the same time, a growing number of Americans seem not to be buying the president’s “who me?” approach to allegations that he isn’t exactly extending the hand of friendship to his opponents. Obama’s general approval rating has dropped below the 60s where it had been since his inauguration. While it is still high, the decline has caused some observers around here to predict that the honeymoon may be one of the shortest on record.
That analysis appears to have gained currency with the administration’s deer in the headlights reaction to news that AIG managers, flush with $170 billion in taxpayer bailout money so far, doled out $165 million in bonuses to employees on the premise that it was necessary to retain vital personnel to get us out of the mess they got us into in the first place.
That prompted Americans to ask where did they think these people were about to run off to — Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae or Lehman Brothers, the unemployment office or maybe Tahiti? And why not just let them go?
The president and his Treasury secretary, Timothy Geithner, scrambled on television to demand our money back despite legal contracts. This apparent political decision effectively pushed Geithner, who already had decided there was no way to stop the bonuses, in front of a bus loaded with enraged members of Congress and citizens seeking retribution and maybe his job.
On Capitol Hill a bipartisan army of lawmakers rushed to adopt special legislation — constitutional or not — that taxed the bonuses out of existence. They also demanded the names of those who received the dough and refused to return it as requested by their chief executive officer, a rather ominous move under the circumstance.
Meanwhile, the Obamas have decided they need some time off from the rigors of all this, especially since Daddy’s frown has become an almost permanent fixture after a little more than 60 days on the job. They will head for Spring Break, first at Camp David over the weekend and then who knows where. This angered much of what’s left of the national press corps as he became the first president in his first year since Grover Cleveland to blow off the Gridiron Club’s annual spring gathering designed to reconcile opposing forces for one night at least.
Terrye on March 23, 2009 at 10:52 PM
NPR and Rasmussen and Pew have Obama’s rating in the high 50′s. Gallup has it at 65, they are the only polling outfit that has that high. {I think}. Is he slipping? I don’t know. Maybe.

Me too, they should have used the opportunity to either have the corrupt and incompetent Democrat Party politician traitors fully investigated, indicted, tried, convicted and imprisoned.
For example, where would we be now if Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Hillary Clinton, Diane Feinstein and Chris Dodd had been locked up in cells for the past 8 years as they deserve to be?
One hell of a lot better than we are now, that’s for sure.

Buckley’s writing style is so grating it practically is a parody. He just cannot pull off the imitation of his dad.
As for his statement, I voted for Barack Obama largely on the basis of his temperament, which I thought superior. It’s difficult for me to believe that anyone remotely related William Buckley could say that.

OK folks we need to be breaking down the Obama spending spree into real and personal terms people can wrap their minds around. The Medical Profession Speaks out on the Financial Bailout Package:
The allergists voted to scratch it, and the dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.
The gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the neurologists thought the administration had a lot of nerve, and the obstetricians felt they were all laboring under a misconception.
The ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted; the pathologists yelled, “Over my dead body!” while the pediatricians said, ‘Oh, Grow up!’
The psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, the radiologists could see right through it, and the surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing..
The internists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow, and the plastic surgeons said, “This puts a whole new face on the matter.”
The podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the urologists felt the scheme wouldn’t hold water.
The anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas; and the cardiologists didn’t have the heart to say no.

There is no buyer’s remorse here. Obama’s approval ratings are still over sixty percent (CBS and CNN also had polls showing him at 65). There are two kinds of people who voted for Obama: those smart enough to discern his policies, and those who voted for him without knowing his policies. Smart people aren’t going to change their vote, and the stupid people are going to continue being stupid. After everything he’s done, his approvals are still in the sixties. Like Scott Johnson, I’m depressed.

You touched on one of the most disturbing aspects of Obamanomics: a titanic mountain of debt and locked-in social spending that paralyzes the country’s ability to deal with serious crises. The America of 2010 will have no ability to absorb the financial devastation of a Hurricane Katrina or, God forbid, 9/11. The country is becoming similar to a family that has maxed out every credit card, and mortgaged every asset, for a monster spending spree that leaves it with no resources available for unforeseen emergencies – their whole way of life collapses if one of the kids needs a root canal.
Likewise, a business sector controlled by a fascist government given to emotional outbursts, and taxed to within an inch of its life to pay for massive social programs, has little capital available to take advantage of developments in technology, or global business opportunities. Setbacks such as energy shortages – a tactic the country’s adversaries are known to employ – will shatter a fragile economy.
The government takeover of AIG marked the rebirth of an ideology thought to have been permanently defeated in the 1940s. Unlike their German predecessors, Obama and his allies don’t have the advantage of an aggressive military culture or rabid nationalism to offset the inherent weaknesses of their economic model, and German fascism only worked while there were foreign enemies to conquer and plunder. The new fascists can hardly count on either militarism or nationalism to pump vitality into their stagnant command economy, and of course the American character of the 20th century is not amenable to aggressive wars of conquest anyway.
The remarkable thing about the ongoing Obama disaster is that it’s only taken two months to get this bad, and nothing has really happened yet. Obama looks like a prime minister in danger of losing a vote of no confidence, and he has yet to face any serious challenge from abroad, or sudden catastrophic event at home. He’s a slick politician who supposedly oozes charisma, supported with nearly fanatical intensity by the media, and yet he can’t muster any higher approval ratings than George W. Bush had at the same point in his new presidency – only months after defeating the “super-intelligent technocrat” who was the hand-picked successor of a man we were assured had soaring approval ratings, and presided over the greatest economy in the history of the universe. Obama’s most fervent supporters are beginning to blink and look at each other with little confused, nervous laughs, while the rest of the country is buying Ayn Rand books and stocking up on ammo. The thought of how Obama will deal with his first real crisis is something that fills me with dread. They viewed the “crisis” in the financial sector as a wonderful opportunity they can’t believe they were lucky enough to have, but I suspect someone in North Korea or Iran will soon teach them what a real “crisis” is – the kind that aren’t any fun and don’t come with wonderful opportunities to posture and increase your power.
