Video: The punch-drunk moment

posted at 8:30 am on March 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Howard Kurtz, one of the best media analysts in the mainstream media, will probably make an adjustment in his normal morning update to his column filed last night. Kurtz wrote about the ascendance of Steve Kroft at 60 Minutes to the lead position:

Kroft, who spent 90 minutes with Obama, says the president was “very, very relaxed” and seems comfortable with him after several previous interviews. “He did not seem at all concerned about what the press has been playing up as his worst week,” says Kroft, who was editing the story until 3:30 a.m. Sunday. “My own personal feeling is they sense they’re having trouble getting their message out in Washington and wanted a discussion at a more leisurely pace that went beyond a sound bite. . . . The challenge was to try to break through and get him to talk about things he hadn’t been talking about.”

Whether he’s reporting from the White House or a war zone, the newly designated lead guy is anything but flashy. Kroft delights in tackling such subjects as credit default swaps and oil price speculation, doing much of the digging himself rather than relegating it to his producers, a common practice in television. And when the 63-year-old reporter sits down with a newsmaker, you tend to remember the person’s answers, not Kroft’s questions.

In a splendid demonstration of Murphy’s Law, Kroft made the big splash last night not from a Barack Obama answer, but for this question:

Kroft: You’re sitting here. And you’re laughing. You are laughing about some of these problems.  Are people going to look at this and say, ‘I mean, he’s sitting there just making jokes about money?’ How do you deal with — I mean: explain … Are you punch-drunk?”

Obama: No, no. There’s gotta be a little gallows humor to get you through the day.  Sometimes my team talks about the fact that, uh, if you had said a year ago that the least of my problems would have been Iraq — which is still a pretty serious problem — I don’t think anyone would have believed it.  But we’ve got a lot on our plate, and a lot of difficult decisions we’re going to have to make.

Unfortunately for Obama, he was giggling during the question, which made Kroft’s question seem as though Kroft was challenging him at that very moment.  It made Obama look unserious, although I actually think Obama is right and that someone with those responsibilities does need to keep a sense of humor.  It’s probably a bad idea to demonstrate it by giggling through a prime-time interview while answering questions about the economy.

Oh, and Mr. President?  We tried to tell you repeatedly during the campaign that Iraq was nowhere near the problem you claimed it to be, especially in the last year.  It stopped being the problem you thought it was in late 2007.

Ever see a TV interview or one of those reality shows where they put the microphone up to a teenage girl and ask her a question she either doesn’t know the answer to or doesn’t want to answer? What you get is that same sort of nervous giggle that Obama offered up to Steve Kroft last night.

jon1979 on March 23, 2009 at 9:59 AM

No need to go getting all personally offensive or vulgar. Yes, had Bush acted that way the left would have ripped him apart, no one is suggesting that he wouldn’t have been, nor is anyone making excuses for Obama’s behavior. There is no need to resort to flaming hyperbolic accusations to get your point across. Take a deep breath and respond in a mature rational manner.

Relaxed??? He’s stoned! Look at his face in that video again…and tell me he’s not high on something.

A quote from Dreams From My Father: “I had learned not to care… Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it.”

Well, he can certainly afford it now. I finally understand why he never released his medical records. Maybe it’s time to start thinking about an intervention?

I think there were a lot of other influences that caused him to develop his radical point of view, with racial grievances being only part of it.

My hope is that a lot of people will wake up to the importance of examining a person’s character before deciding whether to vote for them.

What are you trying to say?

kingsjester on March 23, 2009 at 11:01 AM

Nice use of the dictionary, kj.

It’s very simple. The guy is quite intentionally trying to convey a sense of comfort or ease in communicating with the public, and he is doing so in part through the use of laughter.

His giggle now, roughly converts to Hillary’s forced cackle back during the primary campaign. But BO and his handlers knew that her forced, even jarring laugh completely backfired on her. She became an object of ridicule. Even Jon Stewart made fun of her!

Hillary was indeed “cachinating.”

So BO is trotting out a media cool version.

I think Ed is exactly right when he says that.

. . . Obama is right and that someone with those responsibilities does need to keep a sense of humor. It’s probably a bad idea to demonstrate it by giggling through a prime-time interview while answering questions about the economy.

His risk should have been that his laughter not come across as forced or contrived.

Instead, Barry ended up giggling, which came across as strangely inappropriate.

Almost makes you wonder when Jonathan Alter will update his column from a year ago December, and ask the age old question about Barry . . . “Why is this man laughing?

Or, as Jonathan put it back then, “So the verdict is in. Smile? Of course. Laugh? It’s a gaffe.

The problem Barry has is that the giggle comes at a time when, even among those who voted for him, there is a growing sense of buyers’ remorse. While the giggle was not as loud as Hillary’s guffaw, it still comes across as awkward and out of place with the seriousness of the economic situation.

I disagree with Ed. Obama’s laughter was not the sign of a normal sense of humor. It was so inappropriate for a serious discussion about a terrible situation that has and will affect many people. As an aside it’s also dreadful PR politics. I bet you anything that Clinton would never have done that. He may have his own problems, but he wouldn’t have behaved like this in this type of interview. RedState has had a couple of posts on this. The one from last night was especially scathing:

‘Punch-Drunk’ POTUS Has a Hearty Chuckle at the Expense of the Recently Unemployed and Destitute

“There’s gotta be a little gallows humor to get you through the day,” says the man who makes $400,000 a year but gets everything he wants for free anyway, who has his every whim catered to, who has his own plane and chopper, and who has never held anything resembling a real job, in the real workforce and economy, in his life“with a laugh.”

Here’s a question: what the heck happened to the “Hope and Change” this man was supposed to bring to America with his accession to the White House? I suppose having a hearty chuckle on national television at those Americans who have lost their jobs, their incomes, and their savings in the last several months (with the bulk of the latter coming since the president’s swearing in a scant two months ago) is, in fact, a “change” from what every previous executive has done; however, something tells me rubbing America’s collective face in the current crisis isn’t exactly the brand of “change” that 53% who supported Obama voted for.

But at a time when the world financial markets are reading utterances by the President and Secretary of the Treasury Geithner the way a fortune teller would read the entrails of a goat, Obama seems to think it is pretty funny that he has a job and a lot of people have lost theirs and that our financial system could be turned into a steaming heap of ordure by any unwise action.

Oh, wow. I can’t believe that no one thought of the Joker before now. Obama laughing as he spreads economic terrorism.

Glad you liked it. I stumbled on it last night.

Dude, is he stoned?

liquidflorian on March 23, 2009 at 2:48 PM

If what is happening in this country right now was not so serious then Obama & the people that surround him would give us laughs on a daily basis.
It’s when I remind myself that this guy is the leader of our county & military and that’s when the laughter turns to revulsion & fear!!!

It’s a talking dog, folks.

mr1216 on March 23, 2009 at 3:24 PM

Meh. I wouldn’t read too much into it. President Bush had the same nervous laughter too. It’s just one of those things that comes with a stressful job.

SoulGlo on March 23, 2009 at 3:29 PM

I know that there are liberals out there who are smart enough to know their guy is inept/unprepared/in-too-deep to be president, but their pride is preventing them from making the admission.
I suspect smart liberals are sitting very quietly right about now.

I think it’s the dumb lefties that are still banging the drums in Obama’s marching band. They are the ones that are easily programmed by the mainstreamed talking points.

I had company here from Canada for the past few days. One of the guests was an Obama fan. She was also the guest who did not want to partake in the light political banter. I know why, but she still likes Obama.

She also bought a box of Sham-Wows.

I hope some of you saw the interview of Romney on larry king the other night. What a difference – a mature, intelligent adult vs a spoiled, community organizer without a teleprompter
who couldn’t stop giggling like a school girl. Never saw Bush giggle when he was talking about serious things. Please put up a website, soulglo – I’d like to see it.
As I watched Romney talk about Sarah and the country and the financial crisis I knew we had made a big mistake. By the way, he likes Sarah, thinks she really connected.
By the way, shep, no smiling, it was giggling. I think he was punch drunk.

From another website:

Is Barack Obama a Marxist or just a sociopath?

by Kurt Schulzke on March 23, 2009

Barack Obama’s callous laughter last night on 60 Minutes (vid below) proves either (a) he is delighted at the destruction of America’s financial system because, as a Marxist, this has been his design all along (think, “God Damn America!) OR (b) he is a sociopath, of which more below the jump. Neither is good news for the people of the United States.

Cocaine’s a helluva drug.

President TelePrompter is stoned.

What exactly was Michelle planting in the wh garden?

TN Mom on March 23, 2009 at 3:43 PM

Between his boffo turns on Leno (He’s no Johnny. Hell, he ain’t even a passable Jack Parr) and 60 Minutes too long, Ol’ Toothy has completely demeaned and disrespected his office and in turn, his employers, or as he would perfer to call us, his subjects.

It looks like he has now taken on the mantle of “smartass-in-chief.” Too bad that the country doesn’t need one.

I thought you’d probably do a post with that line! It’s fits too well not to do that.

Just change the title under the Obamicon to Joker!

He’s laughing…we’re crying.

kingsjester on March 23, 2009 at 4:02 PM

Also, adding the line Some men just want to watch the world burn was brilliant. Chilling, but brilliant.

Unfortunately, that’s true gallows humor.

I think Obama’s handlers said, “Look, 60 Minutes told us we can’t put your teleprompter behind Kroft. But we can’t have you spitting out any more insults at our allies, disabled people, presidential widows, etc. So, if Kroft asks you about any hot-button topics, just laugh & giggle. We’ll write up a clarification for you to read over the phone to him later. Now, here, wash this down. Open your mouth so we know you swallowed it. OK, good boy.”
