Video: The punch-drunk moment

posted at 8:30 am on March 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Howard Kurtz, one of the best media analysts in the mainstream media, will probably make an adjustment in his normal morning update to his column filed last night. Kurtz wrote about the ascendance of Steve Kroft at 60 Minutes to the lead position:

Kroft, who spent 90 minutes with Obama, says the president was “very, very relaxed” and seems comfortable with him after several previous interviews. “He did not seem at all concerned about what the press has been playing up as his worst week,” says Kroft, who was editing the story until 3:30 a.m. Sunday. “My own personal feeling is they sense they’re having trouble getting their message out in Washington and wanted a discussion at a more leisurely pace that went beyond a sound bite. . . . The challenge was to try to break through and get him to talk about things he hadn’t been talking about.”

Whether he’s reporting from the White House or a war zone, the newly designated lead guy is anything but flashy. Kroft delights in tackling such subjects as credit default swaps and oil price speculation, doing much of the digging himself rather than relegating it to his producers, a common practice in television. And when the 63-year-old reporter sits down with a newsmaker, you tend to remember the person’s answers, not Kroft’s questions.

In a splendid demonstration of Murphy’s Law, Kroft made the big splash last night not from a Barack Obama answer, but for this question:

Kroft: You’re sitting here. And you’re laughing. You are laughing about some of these problems.  Are people going to look at this and say, ‘I mean, he’s sitting there just making jokes about money?’ How do you deal with — I mean: explain … Are you punch-drunk?”

Obama: No, no. There’s gotta be a little gallows humor to get you through the day.  Sometimes my team talks about the fact that, uh, if you had said a year ago that the least of my problems would have been Iraq — which is still a pretty serious problem — I don’t think anyone would have believed it.  But we’ve got a lot on our plate, and a lot of difficult decisions we’re going to have to make.

Unfortunately for Obama, he was giggling during the question, which made Kroft’s question seem as though Kroft was challenging him at that very moment.  It made Obama look unserious, although I actually think Obama is right and that someone with those responsibilities does need to keep a sense of humor.  It’s probably a bad idea to demonstrate it by giggling through a prime-time interview while answering questions about the economy.

Oh, and Mr. President?  We tried to tell you repeatedly during the campaign that Iraq was nowhere near the problem you claimed it to be, especially in the last year.  It stopped being the problem you thought it was in late 2007.

Dunno where it’s been said, if it’s been said at all, but it’s obvious to me that Obama is giggling like a schoolgirl because he’s nervous.

Watch his eyes, and how much he blinks. His blink rate shoots through the roof every time he starts his little “look at me I’m so funny” act.

The dude isn’t punch-drunk, and he’s not showing his sense-of-humor. We’d all better duck, because he’s really sweating bullets.

STEVE KROFT:
There is a perception right now, at least in New York, which is where I live and work.

BARACK OBAMA:

Right.

STEVE KROFT:

That, um, people feel they thought that you were going to be supportive.

And now I think there are a lot of people say, “Look, we’re not going to be able to keep our best people. They’re not going to stay and work here for $250,000 a year when they can go work for a hedge fund, if they can find one that’s still (LAUGHTER) working—

BARACK OBAMA:

Well, that— that—

STEVE KROFT:

—and make a lot more.

BARACK OBAMA:

I’ve told them directly. ‘Cause I’ve heard some of this. they need to spend a little time outside of New York. Because— you know, if you go to North Dakota, or you go to Iowa, or you go to Arkansas, where folks would be thrilled to be making $75,000 a year— without a bonus, then I think they’d get a sense of why people are frustrated.

Spot on. I don’t care if he is sitting in meetings and having a tickle fight with Geithner about what a mess everything is. But he shouldn’t be doing it during an “important” interview.

If one did have confidence in him before this, one would have to begin to question his abilities. If one didn’t have confidence in him before, one would seriously begin putting money in the mattress.

BuckeyeSam on March 23, 2009 at 8:38 AM

Good Lord, what buffoon. Steve Kroft asked a pertinent question that will be reviewed historically at later date as the moment Obama’s real intentions leaked out. He really doesn’t care about the economy, the free market, or We the People. His agenda is not to fix the economic problem, it is to thoroughly trash our country so that he can raise the hammer and sickle across the land. When are people going to wake up and realize what the true mission of this guy and his minions really is? I hope the “Tea Parties” continue to grow in size and volume!!

HomeoftheBrave on March 23, 2009 at 8:38 AM

The laughter is a sign of hysteria; Obama is in so far over his head he has no idea what to do about anything and has become a caricature of himself. Obama is quite literally a man having a nervous breakdown of monumental proportions.

doriangrey on March 23, 2009 at 8:39 AM

I don’t deny that presidents need to laugh; Reagan did it regularly. But Obama seems almost delirious.

Oh, and many people could’ve told Obama long before the election that Iraq wouldn’t be his biggest issue.

This is not gallows humor, it’s just Obama not being serious. Right now America needs a leader, not somebody who giggles in an interview.

Phoenician on March 23, 2009 at 8:46 AM

Obama: No, no. There’s gotta be a little gallows humor to get you through the day.

“Gallows humor”? So … is the catastrophe back on? I thought it was all peaches and cream right after that wasted $800 billion got through Congress (with the tweeked bonus wording for AIG)? Is the respite now over, and we are in such sad sahpe that it is gallows humor time? Can I get a crisis schedule, or something? This is the damndest on-again, off-again catastrophe I’ve ever heard of.

Very true, Ed. In any event, I would have thought that Leno satisfied The Precedent’s humor requirement for the week. But, then, who can resist a giggling fool for a leader? Aren’t they the best kind?

I actually think Obama is right and that someone with those responsibilities does need to keep a sense of humor.

That only applies if there is a joke told. At that moment, there was no joke. Yet there was still laughter. Thus the question about being punch drunk, which is just a polite way of saying, “Is there something wrong with you?”

kingsjester on March 23, 2009 at 9:03 AM

Steve Kroft is a real sneaky guy. He took advantage of The Boss. And I, for one, am outraged.

I guess we only have ourselves to blame, though. To lighten things up before the taping of the “60 Minutes” interview, Gibbsy put on a Keith Olbermann mask and danced around the Oval in a mock strip tease (Keith really tried to do that one night in Chicago for The Boss, and it took three Secret Service agents to stop him before it got, er, embarrassing). The Boss started giggling at Gibbsy’s antics, and then couldn’t stop during the interview. Kroft swore he’d use the version of that portion of the interview where The Boss was able to keep it together (it took six takes, for gosh sake). But then he used one of the version that made The Boss look like he didn’t quite have it together. Ugh. Another bad media appearance. When will they end?

Frankly, I’m stumped by it all. The Boss acted like this all the time during the campaign, and the media always treated us well. Why are they being so mean now? Any advice or insights appreciated, cause us White House folks got nothin’.

From TOTUS’ blog.

He is just disconnected…he has his own agenda, and nothing will deter him from that.
You can have all the facts about how the stimulus won’t work, how Iraq has not been the major problem the past year, how he and others knew and voted for the bonuses, etc.
It won’t matter, he can laugh because “he won” and he can do what he wants because so far his popularity is high and he is taking advantage of it.
Basically he is laughing at us, at our very feeble attempts at bringing him down. He knows as long as he is popular, as long as the MSM likes him (read stay liberal), he can do and say whatever he wants…it doesn’t matter.

Oblivious to reality, now that’s funny because humor must be grounded in truth.

President Obama’s actions provide evidence that voters turned out for Obama because the media tried to create Obama as a friend you could trust. The truth, the media created a friend, but forgot to build the trust element. The evidence, 50+million people did not vote for him or vote at all because they did not feel they could trust either candidate.

Politics today is nothing more than a mature (in most cases) version of High School popularity, where class elections depend on who has the most friends (popularity).

When can the man be declared mentally unfit for office? How long does that take. Then we can get Biden in office. On second thought, we might be better off leaving Obama in office.

SC.Charlie on March 23, 2009 at 9:29 AM

I think Biden is the lesser of two evils here. Biden often makes a fool of himself, but I don’t think he carries a resentment toward America. I think Obama does carry such a resentment and believes our country deserves to be punished for his percieved slights.

I saw these guys in business…affirmative actioned into a position they couldn’t handle. Eventually they are put somewhere with no influence and people quit engaging them…where do we put this guy…the President???

winston on March 23, 2009 at 9:22 AM

Throw the Democrats in Congress bodily out of office in 2010 and render him unable to pass a single Bill.

Meanwhile, repeal all of the crap he passed in his first two years in office and override his vetoes.

We can take our country back starting in 2010. The “Reset” button starts with throwing the Democrat Jackasses in Congress out of their seats in 2010.

MINI ME TOTUS Was telling a joke in his ear and he just couldn’t control the laughter.

thomasaur on March 23, 2009 at 9:39 AM

I just gotta wonder – who’s in charge in Washington these days? ‘Cause it sure as hell ain’t Chuckles.

crazy_legs on March 23, 2009 at 9:41 AM

President Urkel,your car is ready.

spareadime on March 23, 2009 at 9:42 AM

Frankly, I’m stumped by it all. The Boss acted like this all the time during the campaign, and the media always treated us well. Why are they being so mean now? Any advice or insights appreciated, cause us White House folks got nothin’.

TOTUS has it exactly right: this is the real Obama, full of snark. He used to have his media groupies doubled over with laughter with his running banter on how gawd-awful Kerry was, back in 2004.

And he is happy — things are going according to plan. Trumped-up class warfare with AIG; tanking of the markets; takeover of banks; taxing the productive; revenge on the evil capitalists; lowering the standard of living by sending energy prices soaring with cap and trade — it’s evening in America, and he feels fine!

If this is what they aired, imagine what hit the cutting room floor….

TheBigOldDog on March 23, 2009 at 9:44 AM

Whoa. That was just disturbing.

Something is seriously, seriously wrong with him.

This isn’t the usual bumbling. He’s really losing it. Drugs, pressure, breakdown… something is really off with Barry.

the_moll on March 23, 2009 at 9:45 AM

You have to keep a sense of humor, sure, but one must also maintain the bearing of the President of the united states and this buffoon diminishes that office more with each passing minute.

Did he look Presidential on Leno?

dogsoldier on March 23, 2009 at 9:46 AM

Either he is already cracking under the pressure or mary jane has a visitors pass to the white house.

I’m not sure I want to. I just wonder, who has the “football”?

boomer on March 23, 2009 at 9:48 AM

Some woman just called into Brian and The Judge and said she thought Obama was high. He does look a bit pie-eyed.

MarkABinVA on March 23, 2009 at 9:49 AM

We didn’t have to wait for Biden: this country officially elected Beavis as its president.

Or maybe he’s Butthead. Someone remind of which one was the stupid one.
