Economy booster: California looking to ban plasma TVs

California has a rapidly-expanding budget shortfall, unemployment going above 10% for the first time since the early 1980s, and perhaps the worst business climate in the nation, excepting Michigan.  How does the state plan to boost the economy, create jobs, and build consumer confidence?  They want to ban plasma TVs because they’re not green enough:

In their continuing quest to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, state regulators have uncovered a new villain in the war on global warming : your big screen TV

Couch potatoes, beware.

The California Energy Commission is considering a proposal that would ban California retailers from selling all but the most energy-efficient televisions. Critics say the news standards could take 25 percent of televisions off the market — most of them 40 inches or larger.

“The larger the television, the more at risk it is of being banned unnecessarily in California,” said Douglas Johnson, senior director of technology police for the Consumer Electronics Association.

Association officials say the standards are not only unnecessary –  because the federal government already regulates energy efficiency through the voluntary Energy Star program — but also ill-timed. The last thing our economy needs now is products taken off the market, they say.

The state energy commission denies it wants to ban any kind of television sets.  They claim that they just want to limit the market only to those models that provide better energy efficiency in order to save costs and cut down on emissions.  The Orange County Register notes that the annual savings in energy costs between comparable plasma and LCD models amounts to a grand total of $30 per year.

Buried farther in their FAQ on this action, though, readers can find out what their intent really is, emphasis mine:

Who is supporting these proposals?

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the LCD Manufacturers Association, television component manufacturers such as 3M and Agoura; television manufacturer Vizio, and all three major California electric utility companies (Pacific Gas & Electric, San Diego Gas & Electric, and Southern California Edison) endorse the proposed regulations. Many well-known retailers including Wal*Mart, Sears, Costco, Sam’s Club, and Frys have all agreed to emphasize selling energy efficient TVs. Additionally, a recent survey showed California households overwhelmingly (89%) want their next television to be more energy efficient.

In other words, it’s a protection racket for LCD manufacturers.  They want the state to intervene in the market, as plasma currently undercuts the price for LCDs.  Eventually, LCDs will win this format war anyway, as plasmas have more propensity for burn-in and don’t last as long as LCDs.  However, consumers should make that decision, not the state.

OC Register reporter Brian Joseph notes that the commission denies that they’re trying to limit the size of televisions in general, but …

Gottlieb insisted that the regulations wouldn’t eliminate big screens from California stores. But the commission’s own draft report says TV energy use is “proportional to the screen size.” And there’s no doubt the regulations will limit energy use.

So if you’re in the market for big screen TV, now might be the time to buy. The regulations are expected to be approved this summer.

And what will happen when the regulations go into effect?  California consumers will buy their TVs from on-line retailers out of state, which will force electronics retailers to close, jobs to disappear, and tax revenues to drop.  The economy will continue to decline, budgets will continue to show shortfalls, and the California legislature will continue to press for more tax increases.  In other words, it will be business as usual for the increasingly anti-business Golden State.

That being said, how is attacking plasma TVs solving any real issues facing California?

kingsjester on March 23, 2009 at 3:20 PM

Because they have to do something. About something. Anything but real problems. Those are too hard.

juanito on March 23, 2009 at 4:24 PM

How’s this for an economy booster?:

Someone needs to start an intervention program for Global Warming addicts like The Arnold, and a build a nice place (with padded walls if necessary) for their rehab.

Not only could this be a money-making boon for some enterprising person (or group), just imagine how much better this country would be if we could get these politicians out of circulation for awhile, and ultimately cure them of this dangerous, destructive addiction.

Given that global cooling is the real time concern, the state should be handing out discounts for plasmas. Or if energy is a concern, they could repeal their ban on oil drilling off the Cali coast. And they would be shocked that the people of Cali and the US would suddenly have tons of new energy open to them. The horror.

The article is on watching sports, not gaming. XBox 360 Gamers often complain that plasma overheats….

…hey, this is above my paygrade, as I am NOT a gamer. Just married to one. The mother of two gamer addicts..I’m a Wii Fit/Sports girl, so graphics don’t really matter to me..

The article also states that fast action is less blurred on a plasma set. I can understand overheating if the TV is left on for hours at a time. If so you are a great wife!

Theworldisnotenough on March 23, 2009 at 4:45 PM

Actually, LCD looks better in the store under the florescent lights in torch mode with the contrast all cranked up. But back at home in your darkened home theater, the colors and black levels of plasma blows away LCD’s.

‘Zactly.

Clearly, Arnold can’t see past his pecs.

Clearly you haven’t gotten a good look at Arnold lately.

It’s continuing idiocy like this that makes me so glad I’m moving from California at the end of April!

GEC on March 23, 2009 at 5:04 PM

I’m not sure how a ‘green’ mandate on plasma TVs is going to fix California but I’m guessing that there will be many like me who would have been happy with my 17 year old 19″ RCA that weighs about 150 pounds (and still works and putting out more of the bad stuff than my new TV) but when that 52″ plasma came down in price, it called to me. Now, both TVs are on all the time. My new baby and the old one in the teens’ rumpus room are almost never turned off. So, now, our household is putting out double the emissions that we were before.

Just another reason why “fly over country” is the place to live.

[...] the LCD Manufacturers Association, television component manufacturers such as 3M and Agoura; television manufacturer Vizio…

Corporatists strike another blow for free markets. They must’ve learned it from the unions.

Feedie on March 23, 2009 at 5:50 PM

First its plasma tvs then its motorcycles or boats or gas grills. Whatever they deem unnecessary becomes a target.Where will this slippery slope end.

juanito on March 23,

That is actually a very profound statement. Simple, yet profound. Why? Because they are not doing what they actually need to do. Like, build more Nuke plants, drill, lower taxes, free business from regulation,,,
etc.,, so when one refuses to do all the right things to fix the problems,, what is left??? ALL THE WRONG THINGS!!!
That is why we are in such a freakning stinking mess!!! The stupid morons in charge refuse to do the right things. So,, they can’t just sit there!! They gotta do something with their time. So,,there ya go!!!

JellyToast on March 23, 2009 at 5:55 PM

The evil plasma TVs are made from memetic poly-alloy. The same stuff as the T-1000. Destroy them before they kill John Connor.

Kuffar on March 23, 2009 at 6:05 PM

No no no, you silly man. At that point KaliforniaSSR will ban plasma TVs outright.

Don Carne on March 23, 2009 at 6:07 PM

I just bought a big screen replacement for my old projection TV three weeks ago. Living in CA, glad it’s an LCD. I wouldn’t want some government official raiding my home!

Sultry Beauty on March 23, 2009 at 6:29 PM

Pssst…

Anyone want to buy a plasma TVs?

I’m too old to be selling drugs; but illegal electronic equipment? I’ll be richer than Bill Gates!

RINO Arnie is doing a lot more damage than the recalled Gray Davis -(D). Explains conservative disdain for RINOs in a nutshell. With Democrats, we know what we’re getting.

Clearly Arnold’s a piss poor RINO…He’s got to go!

byteshredder on March 23, 2009 at 8:06 PM

This all sounds like the plot of a bad movie, starring Arnold no less.

Send_Me on March 23, 2009 at 8:08 PM

Get to da ChoppaH!!

Maybe he should put a ban on transcribing every last one of his movies into high def. or blue ray.

Then his Full On Retard way of thinking could affect the whole country.

See, this is what happens when you marry a Kennedy/Skeletor/Succubus.

Is it just me, or are Californians just the stupidest damned people on the planet?

just look at the last two presidents they cursed us with.

Unlike the current one we at least knew where they were from.

If you want to talk about being cursed, let’s go back to Johnson and work our way up from there, shall we? Don’t hear you Libs say squat about Johnson…or Carter for that matter. It’s as if you all go from FDR to JFK and then to Clinton and the Democrats in between didn’t exist.

Nixon was a great president. Obviously his abuse of power for personal political gain was disgraceful, but if Slick Willy can still be ‘cool’ even after being caught lying with DNA evidence no less, I suppose Nixon can be cool as well.

California is like a beautiful park that has been taken over by drug dealers, crack-whores and alcoholics. It is rendered unfit for decent people until someone with brains and balls comes in, cleans out the refuse (human and otherwise) and reclaims the park. Rather than deal with the problems, Ahnold chooses to make commercials encouraging unsuspecting folks to come and spend money in his cesspool. Brilliant!
And kudos to BigWyo. Your closer was coffee-spewingly funny.

Sure open up a can of DUMB ASS on TV’s! Not like you have anything better to do out there in California….. what the hell is wrong with people that they elect schmucks like this.

Ronaldus Magnus is deeply missed and greatly needed in times like these. We truly lost one of the greatest men to grace the oval office, or even the Governors Mansion in California. Recall time :)

Kyah on March 24, 2009 at 5:36 AM

Comrade Arnie, you sleep with your Kennedy and leave US citizens alone.

Wade on March 24, 2009 at 10:56 AM

Great Idea!
The economy of Ca is in the toilet, so lets ban stuff!
yea put sales people out of work!
Typical RINO idea

ColdWarrior57 on March 24, 2009 at 11:53 AM

This is just a stealth economic stimulus program. Talk about banning TV’s that consume a lot of power, so people go out and buy these TV’s before the ban goes into effect. Brilliant idea!!!
/sarc

California politicians are complete idiots when it comes to the economy. Seems to be the case with most Democrats. They have no clue. If you want more taxes, make the place more friendly to business and grow the economy. It’s not rocket science!
