Canadian defense minister to Greg Gutfeld and Fox News: Apologize; Update: Gutfeld apologizes
posted at 4:25 pm on March 23, 2009 by Allahpundit
In which a YouTube grassroots brushfire explodes into a full-blown international incident. You make the call: Below you’ll find the “Red Eye” segment that aired on March 17 followed by MacKay’s demand for an apology this morning. Four Canadian troops were killed in Afghanistan in the interim, something that I suspect would have steered Gutfeld away from this topic if it had happened before the taping. Even so, the only really objectionable line is Doug Benson joking that he didn’t know Canada was part of the fight. Otherwise it’s standard goofs about Canadians being softer/more polite than Americans blended with a critique of foreign governments neglecting military spending. It’s not a knock on Canadian troops, in other words; on the contrary, Gutfeld explicitly agrees with one panelist who says near the end that he has “tremendous respect for anyone who serves,” whether Canadian or American. But as I say, your call. Click the image to watch.
Update: Ask and ye shall receive.
“The March 17th episode of Red Eye included a segment discussing Canada’s plan for a ‘synchronized break,’ which was in no way an attempt to make light of troop efforts,” Greg Gutfeld, host of the segment, told the Canwest News Service on Monday in an e-mailed statement.
“However, I realize that my words may have been misunderstood. It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize. Red Eye is a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humourous and ridiculous manner.”

Gutfield was not criticizing Canadians. He was criticizing our liberal socialist government’s tepid support of anything military. It’s true. For a country of 30 million, we have the military of a country of 3 million because our government spends our money instead on socialized medicine and a host of other liberal causes to varied to list.
The CTV bringing this up is just a way to focus some hate on FOX, that evil conservative propaganda outlet.

That looks more like a Canadian insult against American ignorance than honest cracks against Canada. It was, after all, a Canadian commercial. You’re simply doing the same thing that Europeans do: Saying as many horrible things about US ignorance as possible, and then saying, “See what I mean??!” when we respond in kind.
jimmy the notable on March 23, 2009 at 5:26 PM
To all those saying “suck it up, it’s comedy”, no one minds if you want to make fun of Canadians. We’ll laugh too. But don’t mock our troops while they’re dying for your sake. Capri pants? Painting landscapes? WTF? They’re in Afghanistan killing Taliban and getting blown up on roadsides. Have the minimal good taste to show some respect for that.
How many here would say “it’s just a joke!” if someone started making fun of the guys buried at Arlington as a bunch of wimps. Not many, I hope. Some things are sacred. Ridicule them and expect to have the your big mouth smashed into a bar table.
Again, what a shithead.

This would have been a minor incident in any other time. Today, 4 more Canadian Soldiers, who served in Af’stan, were returned to CFB Trenton, in coffins. That explains the anger of otherwise thicker skinned people here. Bad timing I’d say. And yes, we have had foul mouthed Politicians too in this country who love to bad mouth the USA. I don’t agree with them. It’s despicable. They are all cowardly Liberals who do it, so pay no attention to them.

I think anyone who follows the situation knows of and is grateful for Canada’s involvement. However, Afghanistan doesn’t get all that much news coverage in general. How many people know that Germany and France have troops there? Granted, they’re hamstrung by their governments and don’t leave their bases much, but they’re there.
While it is a NATO mission, it is essentially a US-led initiative. It’s not surprising that given the limited news coverage, the US role is going to get most of the attention in the US.
That’s not to say that Canada doesn’t deserve recognition for their efforts- it does. However, the entire situation in Afghanistan deserves more recognition than what we’re seeing now.
Hollowpoint on March 23, 2009 at 5:32 PM
An operational break doesn’t mean time off. There’s always plenty of training to be done.
I think Red Eye was taking an ignorant cheap shot here.

They are allies who stuck it out in Afghanistan and have even taken some pretty outrageous casualties from the USAF earlier. The US is shouldering most of the burden but we should recognize and appreciate the help we are receiving from other countries. If we did that more often mistakes like that would be rarer.

I just listened to about the first third and it is very clear that Greg Gutfeld is a transparent bald faced liar as his remarks were clearly intended to do exactly that and a whole lot more.
I would also wager that Greg Gutfeld and the other turkeys that he was yucking it up with are all Huhnerfalken who would likely pee and delicate all over themselves if ever exposed to any substantial danger.
MB4 on March 23, 2009 at 5:37 PM
But it wasn’t bad timing. This was on Red Eye 6 days ago. I just can’t stand when people go out of their way to be offended to show how b.a. they are. I think it is shameful to use those heroes who died in order to bash Fox and America.

Listen you farking idiot. It’s a comedy show. Now clearly you haven’t been listening or caring over the fact that it’s a show of no bloody merit. It’s like taking what the Daily Show says as gospel or acting like The Simpsons is the be all and end all of all political statements.
You sir are a moron. And I’m ashamed to share Canadian citizenship with someone so clearly out of his intellectual league that a show that has a pile of newspapers as a correspondent is supposed to be taken so seriously.
Get your head out of your arse, act like a man (or some facismile of one), and if you’re going to threaten to beat me up, I live in Saskatchewan. Bring it on.

Anyone familiar with the show would know that it wasn’t a shot against Canadian troops. Just be glad he didn’t suggest they spend the time with him in a gay bath house.
And from what I’ve seen- no, Canadians aren’t very good at laughing at themselves, especially if it’s an American making the joke.

You’re missing the point. This isn’t about bashing Fox, nor America – I happen to like both plenty fine, thankyouverymuch.
The issue for Canadians is this particular set of comments that display the gross ignorance a few talking heads have in their understanding of our country. Mock our country – fine – that’s fair game. Mock the contributions our military have made in Afstan, and invite scorn from all quarters. I’d have the same reaction if the target of their spew was any other member of the coalition forces.

My God, that’s pathetic. I’ve seen them say nastier things about women sitting right at the desk. I think the sad shape of the Canadian military is the result of that guy being incompetent so he grabbed onto something in order to create a scandal in which he could act tough. Gutfield shouldn’t have apologized because they will be apologizing once a week now. There is blood in the water.
And, HEY!, canadian guy! Your military is run so bad, so patheitically, they are going out of business! The swiis could kick your ass! The Lichtensteinians could kick your ass! Hell, the frickin british could probably kick your asses! And it’s not the fault of your soldiers and sailors. Do your effing job instead of staying up all night watching American TV, you loser. peacenprosperity on March 23, 2009 at 5:54 PM
I don’t know what a Huhnerfalken is, but they’d probably make the joke that they would in fact piss themselves in the face of danger.
Have you never watched the show outside of isolated Youtube clips? Suggesting they take up yoga in their off time is pretty mild for Red Eye. Lighten up. It was the Canadian Defense Minister that suggested the troops needed a year off, and they were poking fun at that. Big deal.
Hollowpoint on March 23, 2009 at 5:55 PM
Sigh. Mocking soldiers putting their lives on the line of any country with which we are allied is wrong. Mock their politicians, poetry, socialist system of government, and their inability to park when they visit Miami, but the military is off limits.

I’m just so terribly relieved that Canadians have never had to apologize for their comments about Americans or our military.
Ya know, they’ve always been so supportive and humbly silent on these issues of our military might, going so far to stay impartial and act cautious that they’ve even hidden our ‘misguided’ soldiers.
Draft dodgers aren’t really dodging the draft if you can’t find them or see them …right?

What would we say if someone made fun of the soldiers in Arlington? As if that has never happened. I believe, about four years ago, a group of French citizens told us to get our rotten meat out of the country referring the American Soldiers buried there who died liberating them in WWII. This kind of crap is said about our soldiers everyday. Canadians are like the rest of the world, bash America then depend on us when anything goes wrong. The only reason they can act this way is because we are the policemen of the world who keep them and every other country safe. For all their yelping about horrible America they should stop and think what the world would be like if we weren’t here. By the way when you get over ran with all the muslims you coddle don’t worry we’ll take care of it for you. But then again, they know that.

I wouldn’t want to fuck with ‘our mild mannered’ Canadian friends. The current record for the longest range sniper kill is 2,430 meters (7,972 ft), accomplished by a Canadian sniper of the third battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (3 PPCLI) during the invasion of Afghanistan, using a .50 BMG McMillan bolt-action rifle. He broke Carlos Hathcock’s record, achieved during the Vietnam War, of 2,250 meters (7,382 ft). The record shot had a flight time of four seconds and a drop of 44.5 meters (146 ft). I can only imagine what the wind factor in that shot was, given the 4 second flight time.

Horse Soldiers is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered forty to one, they pursued the enemy across mountainous terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which was strategically essential if they were to defeat the Taliban.

Canada announced they were taking a year off of the War on Terror. How could a show like Red Eye NOT make fun of that?
For that, Greg Gutfeld owed no apology.
However, those who have been in Afghanistan and served did NOT deserve to be made fun of, and to those, and especially to the families who lost loved ones, they really did owe an apology.
It’s a shame it wasn’t possible to sincerely apologize to those who deserved it while still mocking the Canadian government that, frankly, is not worthy of the sacrifice its citizens/soldiers have made.
Overall, better to just apologize for the sake of those who actually had a right to be offended.
tom on March 23, 2009 at 7:21 PM
The Canadian government seems to be lacking in commitment to military readiness, but that can hardly be blamed on the Canadian military itself. It’s the civilian government that makes those calls.
tom on March 23, 2009 at 7:25 PM
So if I specifically singled out US troops and pretty much called them a bunch of pussies, you’d take it as criticism of Ogabe? Somehow I think that if a foreigner had said what the Red Eye assholes did about US troops instead nobody here would actually defend them. In fact, next time our elections come around, I’m not gonna vote. Let the liberals take back Canada and remove all troops from Afghanistan. If you can’t even show as much as a little respect for people who came to help fight in a war that isn’t directly related to us, then fight it on your own.

ddrintn on March 23, 2009 at 7:31 PM
I think Greg’s greater point was that Canada is dependent on the fact that America shares a border with them and would never let any harm befall them. He was not denigrating their service, just pointing out that in a real war, combatants can’t just take a “time out” – they get away with having an inadequate military that requires such luxuries as taking a sabbatical because America has a stronger military.
No one disrespects the fighting, the time out, however is ridiculous.
Queen0fCups on March 23, 2009 at 7:37 PM
Darth,
Re-read my posts above, and re-watch the video. No one was singling out Canadian soldiers by calling them pussies. I am singling the Canadian politicians out by asking why will you let your Army become combat in-effective in 2011 FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR.
One day in Saudi my squadron went combat in-effective, we could not launch one jet, it is embarrassing as hell, the entire AOR knew we were down for the count, the next day we had 14+ planes ready to fly.
In 2011 Canada will become combat in-effective for an entire year according to your Lt Gen (I know it is not because of Canada’s military members). Perhaps you should focus your attn on him or you govt as to why?
just sayin
F15Mech on March 23, 2009 at 7:42 PM
There was no reason for this show to bash Canada. With such a target rich environment in our American economy and our government I don’t quite understand the reason for going after Canada’s military. It was a cheap shot and at this time in history we need as many friends as we can get. This stuff really doesn’t do anyone any good at all.

I’ll give Gutfeld a pass on this one, I don’t believe his intent was bad, if the time line mentioned was in fact true, how could he know. He did apologize, and I’m sure he meant it.
Some comedians do in fact respect the fighting man, it is easy to make fun of the Canadian Government, as it is ours, but the Canadian Military is no joke, nor is ours. They have never backed away from a fight, and deserve our respect.

Why? I already know what they say.
Red Eye assholes were. It’s not our military leadership who would be going on break, so who else but our soldiers could he be making fun of? He even says at the beginning that he refers to every member of the Canadian military. I don’t understand why you feel it necessary to defend them.
This isn’t about you, for two reasons:
1. You’re nobody. I don’t mean it as an insult, I’m nobody too. We just don’t matter on the grand scale of things and I’m not about to get pissed over every stupid thing some joe blow on the internet says. But Red Eye isn’t nobody since this somehow turned into an international scandal overnight.
2. I was talking about the Red Eye comments, not yours. I just find it absolutely disgusting that there are CONSERVATIVES here defending this turd. For all of Hot Air’s many, visible faults, I didn’t think tolerance of military bashing was one of them. I guess unless you’re an incompetent AIG fatcat you’re fair game around here.
I already know why: because Canada is ruled by liberal pussies. And you know what doesn’t help Canada when it’s ruled by liberal pussies? American assholes mouthing off about our military. We already have enough political bullets to dodge without a symbol of conservatism (Fox) taking a giant dump on our troops. Harper already has enough shit to deal with (like being forced to send our budget into a deficit) over American incompetence in the financial sector, we don’t need American conservatives sending our liberals even more heavy munitions on the WOT front as well.

This isn’t the most outrageous outrage in outrage history, but it’s nice that Gutfeld apologized.

Here here.
I put the Red-Eye segment in the same category as Obama’s laughter during the discussion of the US economy in last night’s 60 Minutes segment. In other words, satire or not, wildly inappropriate given the timing and circumstances. Canada is fighting alongside the US in Afghanistan and this has turned out to be one of the deadliest months for our guys in Afghanistan.
The next time America wonders why nobody wants to fight alongside them, maybe you all can read the comments here and maybe, just maybe, get a clue.

Good and fair point, however we don’t need Canadian officials also dumping on our conservative news hosts as well.
F15Mech on March 23, 2009 at 8:27 PM
Darth said it better than I did. Make fun of our idiotic social policies and parliamentarians all you want. Do not call our soldiers wimps. That it came from Fox only makes it worse. For this, they deserve to get dumped on.
Gaunilon on March 23, 2009 at 8:37 PM
I may have missed something but when did Greg call soldiers wimps?
Granted one of the guests did not know anything about the sacrifices of Canada, but I never heard any solider called a wimp.
Hell last I checked when the US invaded Canada we lost.
F15Mech on March 23, 2009 at 8:42 PM
we = Americans (or citizens of the USA) in my previous post.
F15Mech on March 23, 2009 at 8:50 PM
I don’t have cable TV, it rots the brain, but I heard the first third of the utube linked to and it was pretty clear to me what those Huhnerfalken (the English ist Verboten on this website) were doing. I doubt they would dare do the same about American troops if they had a studio full of American Soldiers and Marines.

Bottom line: There is no “time out” in war.

This has been informative. We had four boys home in boxes this week. Pardon us if we don’t laugh at your jokes.

How could he know that Canadian soldiers on battlefields might be killed fighting for liberty and freedom? Maybe if he had dome some homework before speaking he would have known that these are not the first four Canadians killed in Afghanistan. He didn’t even know that Canada was in the fight. The better question to ask is how can he not know? How can he be so unprepared for a segment on his own show? He himself calls his own show “satirical and ridiculous”. It brings up the question of why a serious news channel has this kind of programing. I’m not saying the show should be canceled. It should be judged on ratings for it’s time slot just like every other show, but this guy was not at all prepared to comment on this topic. Also, nice video clip :)

Maybe their is some cultural disconnect here. Or I am just stupid.
Because in all honesty I did not see a insult to Canada’s soliders in Gregs comments.
A senior military member, requesting a year off in 2011 is worthy of some negative comments.
The thing is the politicians can reverse that. We are talking about the year 2011 not 2009.
BTW how many Canadians took a swipe at our past President?
To say attacks on your elected leaders is not worthy or not “fair” is really BS.
F15Mech on March 23, 2009 at 9:09 PM
Can you be more specific? If it’s some liberal official, you don’t have an analogy, because I don’t expect liberals (canadian or american) to act with anything resembling a shred of decency. If you’re referring to this case in particular, the dumping was well earned.
Darth Executor on March 23, 2009 at 9:12 PM
Please stop with that already.
F15Mech on March 23, 2009 at 9:14 PM
I already explained where. Start from the beginning, notice how Gutfeld explicitly refers to every member of the Canadian military, and goes on to make his stupid comments about taking a break to do yoga and paint landscapes. There’s no cultural disconnect, you’re defending the indefensible.
You are regurgitating your previous post. Gutfeld didn’t target just the commander (who himself will not be taking the year off anyway), he EXPLICITLY says he’s referring to every member of the US military. In fact, it wouldn’t even make sense to target the commander since the commander would certainly not be taking a break from his job which doesn’t use military equipment in the first place. Only way he could make it more obvious is if he had literally said “hey, every Canadian soldier is a pussy”.
Where did I say attacks on our elected leaders are not fair? Now you’re just pulling **** out of your ass because you can’t be bothered to admit you’re simply wrong in this situation. Who the hell cares what some unspecified canadians said about Bush? I wouldn’t give a damn if it had been Olbermann saying this **** because I have zero expectations of decency from liberals. If I can find some US conservative who mouths off about Canada’s liberal leaders, does it mean I have your blessing to say US soliders need a break from Afghanistan to go paint their nails or recite poetry?
Again, if this is the kind of respect our soldiers get from US CONSERVATIVES (key word here, I don’t give a **** about liberals, I know how they really feel about the military), then why should we put them in danger for your sake?
Darth Executor on March 23, 2009 at 9:20 PM
I was referring to the Canadian Official that said the Canadian Military will need to take a year off in 2011 because his military will be combat in-effective. He is quoted in the Red-Eye Video.
F15Mech on March 23, 2009 at 9:22 PM
Oh boohoo, Canada. When will we get some apologies for all the baby killer remarks that weren’t even part of a comedy act? Oh that’s right. Never.
herrevery on March 23, 2009 at 9:26 PM
In that case, and since attacks on leaders are fair….
What is the outrage in Canada?
A Canadian LT Gen said that in 2011 we may have to stand down for an entire year?
Yes or No?
Greg called him on it.
Why are you focusing outrage on a American new-caster? Focus outrage on your government first, If what your Lt Gen said is correct.
F15Mech on March 23, 2009 at 9:26 PM
This olde soldier, in a previous life, sides with you.
MB4 on March 23, 2009 at 9:28 PM
How about the Huhnerfalken at Fox make fun of this -
“In a most humble manner, I look into your eyes today and I say ‘Please forgive me and my soldiers’”
- American Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Hammond (in presenting a new Koran to a gathering of local Sunnis who were very likely insurgents not so long ago killing American troops. Another American officer kissed the Koran)
