Judd Gregg: We’ll go bankrupt under Obama’s budget

posted at 1:00 pm on March 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

Man, when he said he’d be a bad fit for Team Barry, he wasn’t kidding. The whole clip’s worth watching but skip ahead to 4:40 if you only want the red meat. Tell us how you really feel, Judd. Left unmentioned in this discussion of mass bankruptcy: The new Obama proposal that might empower Treasury to “seize and wind down” struggling institutions. What could go wrong?

Oddly enough, he spends a solid minute or so earlier in the segment defending Geithner after having basically called him a liar just last week. Residual guilt over having left The One in the lurch at Commerce, maybe?

That’s why Obama’s election is ultimately a failure of our education system. For a generation to vote itself into virtual slavery via enormous debt in exchange for a few pleasant speeches, that generation must be incredibly ignorant.

Ultimately, it’s not the over-35 crowd that will suffer the most from all this; it’s the twentysomethings and those younger, Obama’s biggest supporters, whose futures will be crushed under a mountain of debt.

Obama is just doing what he is told to do. If the masses are bankrupt then they are easily controlled as he surely is. This concept has been here since the beginning of time and has evolved into the possibilty of becoming reality when greed and corruption erodes the values system in its path. A crisis is a terrible thing to waste and the elitists that own “The One” up are manipulating the future of the world into the direction of no return.

Does no one else see a problem with the above. I mean if you think a man is a liar why would you have anything nice to say about the man? If you think the man is doing a good job why call him a liar. The whole think comes out as a big game that is just being said for the TV. I would not be surprised if they both have drinks after this with each other. And that IS THE PROBLEM WITH THIS COUNTRY> Our politicians play a game. None of them mean it. I doubt the dems and Obama really nor the reps really believe that the economy is in the tank. that would explain why they passed that stimulus bill. If you don’t really believe the economy is in bad shape why not use the crisis to advance your agenda.

It is just a big game to our elites. Both reps and dems. A big game. No sense of national duty, honor. No drive to rally around the flag to protect our country from economic implosion. Nothing but a big game. We are soo screwed.

Nothing inconsistent here about his actions. He took the position in good faith–later on found out what was going on and decided on principle that he couldn’t be a part of the train wreck, withdrew his nomination, and is now sounding the warning klaxon. To me, that sounds like a man of principle.

Neal4007 on March 22, 2009 at 1:18 PM

The way he ended with his very firm “no” to reconsider rerunning makes me doubt if he believes what he actually said. Anyone saying that the US is basically going to collapse as a country in ten years and then quit before getting really anything done (in the most important election year to stop/slow the collapse, natch) doesn’t sound sincere.

Not trying to cast aspersions on his character, but it doesn’t add up (unless there are personal/family reasons left unsaid).

amkun on March 22, 2009 at 1:19 PM

Well, the obama adminstration seems to have found a way to reward Olympia and Susan and at the same time warn Gregg–in typical Democratic fashion. They have decided to move the NH, VT and ME Postal District out of Manchester NH and into Portland Me.–putting 90 or so NHerites out of work. This could back fire though since the Dem hold here is tenuous at best and this sort of power play will resonate.

N4646W on March 22, 2009 at 1:31 PM

old trooper2,

Correctomundo, we are already bankrupt. We here in California know this and the reason is for the WASTING OF OUR TAX DOLLARS AND OTHER RESOURCES on the Illegal Aliens and their Anchor Babies!!!!!!

….Consider, for example, this dark, but perhaps realistic, projection by University of California at Santa Barbara economists:
“The… economy will likely continue to decline for another two years, perhaps longer. We expect the number of California jobs … economic output … retail sales [and] tourism revenues will fall throughout the forecast horizon. There is no measure of economic strength that provides even a glimmer of hope for California’s economy in the near term, none.”
The UC Santa Barbara forecast has California’s unemployment rate, now more than 10%, nearing 14% by next year, which means another half-million workers would join the jobless ranks.
California has a baseline general fund budget of about $110 billion a year. Revenues, without the recently enacted tax increases, are at least $25 billion less. Even the tax increases will erase only about $10 billion of that annual shortfall.
If the UC Santa Barbara forecast and other similarly gloomy forecasts hold true, the Capitol will soon be looking back at Taylor’s dour scenario as the good old days.

RealDemocrat on March 22, 2009 at 1:31 PM

I heard Kathleen Parker say on the Chris Matthews show this morning that the blue dog democrats were going to help Obama get his budget through – no price to pay – and they are going to try to get it through as intact as possible. I had hopes that they would be helping to put a stop to this budget as it is. It appears they are just talk. If she’s right, and she seemed very sure of her reporting, this is very bad news.

I wouldn’t worry too much about what Parker says. That discussion was about Kathleen Parker putting a question to her 8-Ball and what came up in the window. Sixty Dem House members and, separately, three Dem Senators just sent letters to Obama telling him to pound salt wrt his proposed budget.

I can’t remember the last time Parker ever did any actual reporting, least of all the investigative kind. She’s an opinionist, a very bad one and frequently late to the story.

President Obama on February 3, 2009:

When the book is written about Judd Gregg, it will tell the story of a man with his own proud record of service on behalf of the American people. As a businessman, attorney, State Executive Counselor, Congressman, Governor in his own right,m and now as a Senator, he’s seen from all angles what makes our economy work for communities, businesses and families, and what keeps it from working better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vsau0Wc2UQ0&feature=related
So, if Senator Gregg is “Bought and paid for by the bailed out institutions,” what does that make President Obama?

Is the President also bought and paid for, or incompetent?

Or, is there some other rational explanation for why the President nominated the Senator?

Democrats have never had a problem with corporate welfare.
Remember Democrat Lyndon Johnson?

He started out as a State Senator in Texas, then worked his way up to Washington. He ended up being both Vice President and President.

In 1936, Lyndon crawled into bed with a Texas firm called KBR, and stayed there for the rest of his days, including after they were bought by the evil Halliburton. And as President he gave them all sorts of non-bid work during the Vietnam War.

But he got a pass. Had a “D” after his name, after all.

Lou Dobbs ran a segment with figures from Opensecrets.org regarding who on Capitol Hill gets the most from these bailed out institutions. Judd Gregg and Roy Blunt barely received any money as ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee and House Minority Whip, respectively.

Do you want to admit now that Chairman Frank and Chairman Dodd have blocked regulation on their committees, as well as moving forward legislation that has created a lot of this systematic risk that we are facing?

According to Opensecrets.org, the Web site for the Center for Responsive Politics, on the Democratic side from 1989 to present, Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd has accepted a total of $13,205,556 in campaign contributions, both in PAC and individual money, from the finance, insurance of real estate sectors.

House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank has accepted a total of $2,494,611 in campaign contributions from the same sectors. In Frank’s case, top donors include employees from the American Bankers Association, the company that’s just bought Washington Mutual, JPMorgan Chase, and the National Association of Realtors. In the case of Senator Dodd, top donors include Citigroup, Bear Stearns and JPMorgan Chase. Dodd and Frank now play key roles in bailout talks.

blue13326 on March 22, 2009 at 1:10 PM

I disagree with blue. Our public education system is not a failure, it has accomplished what it was always meant to. Indoctricnation of the greatness of the state. The public education system was never intended to teach children to think, it was designed to teach children to follow the will of the state. Look at what is being taught in schools and prove me wrong.

I have a highschool aged cousin who learned in “school” how wonderful it will be to have healthcare just like Canada. How was the information presented??? Why with the movie Sicko of course. Science is an inconvenient truth.

See it’s working. How much of how conservative libertarian
types think and act were learned in “school”?? We had to unlearn it first to really educate ourselves.

Remember Bill Ayers, (the man causing disaster causer), is now teaching the teachers. He has admitted that his philosophy never changed… he merely took it to a new forum!

When all this crap comes to a boil, I fail to figure out what satisfaction you are going to have repeating the same old tired lines. Are you going to suffer less than the rest of the nation because you think you figured it out?

Over his career, Gregg has taken more money from Blue Cross/Blue Shield than from any other donor. Last time I checked, they’re not a “failed company”.

And according to Open Secrets, Gregg took no money in 2008 from AIG.

Comparing this to Bush is ridiculous. This financial disaster has left the Fed firing up the printing press as a last ditch effort to get the credit market rolling. This is the last chance to stave off depression. The only hope of that working is government cut back spending at the same time. Arguments from Obama supporters that Bush did it so Obama can do it are all but ensuring depression that Obama will own completely.

I think this president is so tied to ideology that he is not willing to see the forest through the trees. He will go down as the largest failure as President ever. If Obama supporters want that then by all means keep arguing Bush did it so Obama can.

msmveritas on March 22, 2009 at 2:17 PM

Bush ran up the debt for 8 years with an ill advised war in

Iraq and tax cuts for the uber wealthy, where was the cry for fiscal restraint then? I’ll tell you, it wasn’t there. But now under a Democrat president, conservatives are foaming at the mouth about deficits. Lets see, deficit spending for tax cuts and mistaken war, check, deficit spending to try and get out of recession, not so much. Mangled thinking by conservatives being the cause of electoral defeats,CHECKMATE

athensboy on March 22, 2009 at 2:06 PM

The Bush deficits were not caused by the war, but by liberal policies since the 60′s that obligated the federal government to steal money from the states to fund programs and bureaucracies that it had and has no constitutional authority to implement.

Defense of this nation is one of the enumerated responsibilities of the federal government, studying why pigs smell is not. Defense is a legitimate reason for the federal government to levy taxes, but on the states, not individuals.

Also, the tax cuts for everyone who pays income taxes did not cause this financial quagmire. Those cuts were directly responsible for months and months of continual growth during the Bush administration. This financial mess is a predictable consequence of living above one’s means, fraud by both corporations and individuals regarding assets and income and uber intervention into the free market by government.

DO NOT OPEN THIS LINK! I’m sorry I did and hope I didn’t let something in that will make me crazy over the next week.

One of many traditional stories that shaped the culture of Japan. Our society does not have the culture of tribal war to influence it. Instead, we have political wars that destroy the culture of the country rather than build and enforce it.

This could back fire though since the Dem hold here is tenuous at best and this sort of power play will resonate.

jeanie on March 22, 2009 at 1:19 PM

I know with the way transportation is nowadays that it doesn’t really matter where the office is, but to any average person it makes sense that it is in Manchester because it’s pretty much right in the middle. Putting it in Portland doesn’t really even make sense.

Why would you even bother moving it? Hopefully the people of New Hampshire question the point and reasoning of the move as well. Then maybe New Hampshire will get back to being sane. Then again after having lived in New Hampshire for a year (right before the election) I’ve seen that it’ll be tough to get people to snap out of it (especially when you have people from MA moving north).

So then, if Senator Gregg received no donations from AIG, who could possibly have inserted that line in the Stimulus Bill, specifically authorizing the AIG bonuses to be paid?

Could it have been some other Senator (party affiliation unidentified) who was bought and paid for by the bailed out institutions?

And after that clause was inserted, why or why would President Obama have said the Stimulus Bill had to be passed right away?

Could it have been some other President who was bought and paid for by the bailed out institutions?

Of course that’s why we do it. Also, because it’s fun to destroy the Left’s lies with facts, instead of silly allegations.

Take our sad friend getalife here. On today’s Geithner thread, she posted something about Gregg saying that O’bama’s financial plan was good, and then she explicitly asked if Gregg was bought and paid for.

When it was pointed out to her that immediately after Gregg said that he also said O’bama would bankrupt the US, she ran over to this new thread and claimed that in fact Gregg was bought and paid for-the exact opposite of what she had just claimed on the other thread.

I can forgive her, though. It’s hard to think straight when one is dizzy from so much spinning.

Conservative_SAHM on March 22, 2009 at 2:37 PM

What really should scare you is I believe some in the White House such as Summers, Volcker and maybe Geithner know that all this borrowing, and printing of money which we use to buy US treasury bills… It’s all going to lead to massive inflation.

Only, unlike the 1970s, there won’t be enough GDP growth here and in the rest of the world to enable the debt to be worked off quickly.

But, these guys know. Obama and the rest of his dummies choose to ignore this. Pelosi and Reid are the true villans here, along with Frank and Dodd. Obama has out-sourced his domestic policy to these dummies and the result we’re getting now is predictable. Unfortunately, none of these politicians is young enough to be around to see what it will do to my 10 year old niece. I worry for what her generation has to go through. I really do.

Our public education system is not a failure, it has accomplished what it was always meant to. Indoctricnation of the greatness of the state. The public education system was never intended to teach children to think, it was designed to teach children to follow the will of the state.
kringeesmom on March 22, 2009 at 2:14 PM

Technically, it’s not “public” education that causes all that. It’s NATIONALIZED education. For the first 200 years, everything worked pretty well with local communities handling the education of their own children.

The Department of Education was turned into its own ministry in 1979. There’ve been a lot of milestones in the march to Communize America. But I think that was the only one that is utterly irreparable.

Speaking of which; look at all the crap Carter and Clinton pulled during their last months in office. If Obama is STARTING OUT with this, what in the Hell does he have planned for the rest of his term?

What really should scare you is I believe some in the White House such as Summers, Volcker and maybe Geithner know that all this borrowing, and printing of money which we use to buy US treasury bills… It’s all going to lead to massive inflation.

I think part of the strategy is to get home values up high enough to sell off some of garbage mortgages legitimately. This is going to require some inflation. I heard someone say Bernanke went with this strategy because he understood there just wasn’t the political will to do what was necessary to get out of this disaster. The economists get that this is the end line strategy. This is exactly why Gregg is saying Obama staying the course with the budget in light of this is unconscionable.

msmveritas on March 22, 2009 at 2:43 PM

Tim and Paulson were right legally about the bonuses. They sued and it will be settled in court.

That person was definitely a Dem. RedState had this on Friday:

Did Harry Reid Protect AIG?

He Was the Senior Man ‘In The Room,’ And He’s Not Talking

We at Red State have pointed out several times that while Chris Dodd agreed to insert an amendment into the stimulus bill to protect AIG bonuses, he was not in position to do so. Chris Dodd was not a Member of the conference committee that drafted the final version of the bill – the only one that had protection for AIG. The Democrats on the conference committee locked the Republicans out of the process and wrote the bill themselves. No Republican supported the conference report; no Republican signed it….

The Democrat conferees were Daniel Inouye, Max Baucus, Harry Reid, Dave Obey, Charlie Rangel, and Henry Waxman. One (or more) of them allowed Dodd to make the change.

So who was it?
