Quotes of the day
posted at 9:40 pm on March 21, 2009 by Allahpundit
“A central aspect of the plan, which has already been announced by the administration, would give the government greater authority to take over and resolve problems at large troubled companies not now regulated by Washington, like insurance companies and hedge funds.
That proposal would, for instance, make it easier for the government to cancel bonus contracts like those given to executives at the American International Group, which have stoked a political furor. Under the proposal, the Treasury secretary would have the authority to seize and wind down a struggling institution after consulting with the president and upon the recommendation of two-thirds of the Federal Reserve board.”

“You take a look around you, the genuinely successful people that you see who you want to be did not check their individualism at the door when they started their work. They didn’t check their self-interests at the door, and they didn’t check their self-respect, and they didn’t turn over the belief in themselves to somebody else. That’s all I’m talking about and that’s under assault by this administration, which wants to control and limit freedom, ’cause the only way Obama can get the power he wants and the Democrats can get the power they want is if you willingly turn it over to them, by getting rid of your self-interest, your self-respect and holding your best interests at heart. Your best interests do not coincide with your government’s, especially now.”

You can impeach presidents all day long, and you’ll never even rumple the shirts of the real mountebanks in charge. Tell me how many impeachment procedings will it take to remove the unelected bureaucrats, lobbyists, and unionized government workers that have been pillaging the nation for a hundred years?
The electeds will come and go, but it is the mass of unelected and untouchable paper-pushers that are ruining the USA into the mud.

“Smile when you say that” should be our motto–
we need to attract that squishy middle, those perpetually undecided, with question that make them think about how excessive power in the governments hands could affect them.
Time is shorter than you think until the next election….Nancy Pelosi said the day after the midterms of 2006 that the campaign for the white house began that day, and it did.
We have a brief respite from the perpetual campaign, and we should take advantage of it by attracting those around us, with good humor and good questions. They’ll think about them after you’re gone.

I can understand that approach, but it seems that Team Zero has tremendous capacity for destruction which would be incompetent governance, but they are plugged into a reality denying altering warping system of corruptocrats that will not be dislodged by mere incompetence on their part.
And the incompetence of Team Zero will give us at least two of the most corrupt ideological Supreme Court justices we’ve ever seen, have already invited the despots of the world to regard us as weak and may very well permit tremendous damage to our national security, and are rapidly seeking the destruction of our wealth and economy. So where’s the comfort to be had in their incompetence?

The best antidote to the left’s influence on the voters is this administration. Wait till the effect of this economic strategy means young voters have to curtail their lifestyles. When middle class families can’t afford the iphones, vacations etc that they’ve grown accustomed to. I have a college aged daughter, I know what would hurt believe me.
I will tell you too, that the banking folks that all voted for Obama are regretting it big time. I have a few connections in banking and they are furious. It’s one group after another waking up because he is hitting them where they live.

Eh, I’ll keep my eye on the prize for as long as I’m allowed to, but it seems that prize is getting further and further away. 83 Pubs went along with the ‘rats AIG bonus tax and that is 83 too many; if they aren’t going to take a stand then who is?

Yes, I don’t think Americans are willing to sacrifice what The One would like us to; however, sometimes I wonder if the young Obamadrones won’t so much reject Obama’s message but simply not vote in the next election. For the short term I don’t care, but I think conservatives should take it upon themselves to re-educate voters (not in the O-fashion).

Reagan’s 11th Commandment needs to be put in force here by as many people as possible. Conservatism is an ocean with many currents. There will be disagreements about many things, and it’s good to have reasoned and collegial discussions about differences. One can learn a lot that way. Or, at least I learn more from a well-thought out post than I do from screaming.
However, we must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.

Barack Obama is a Fabian socialist. I should know; I was raised by one. My Grandfather worked as a union machinist for Ingersoll Rand (nyse: IR – news – people ) during the day. In the evenings he tended bar and read books. After his funeral, I went back home and started working my way through his library, starting with T.W. Arnold’s The Folklore of Capitalism. This was my introduction to the Fabian socialists.
Arnold taught me to question everyone–my president, my priest and my parents. Well, almost everyone. I wasn’t supposed to question the Fabian intellectuals themselves. That’s the Fabian MO, relentless cultural and journalistic attacks on everything that is, and then a hard pitch for the hope of what might be.
That’s Obama’s world.
He’s telling the truth when he says that he doesn’t agree with Bill Ayers’ violent bombing tactics, but it’s a tactical disagreement. Why use dynamite when mass media and community organizing work so much better? Who needs Molotov when you’ve got Saul Alinski?

I mean look at what is happening because Ogabe is pulling this shiite on us:
–“There are three big industries where the US has global leadership: financial services, media and technology. Introducing this 90 per cent tax is like taking one of those industries out the back and shooting it,” said a top Wall Street executive.
–In Frankfurt one employee at a US investment bank said the new tax measures would “send [the US] back to the stone age”.
–“Commodity traders are already moving to companies like BP where they can make as much money as they used to,” said another banker at a US firm.
–Bankers at Deutsche Bank said it could benefit from the proposed legislation by poaching its US rivals’ most talented employees.

Cindy Munford on March 22, 2009 at 1:23 AM
Doesn’t surprise me, I had a long conversation yesterday with someone who was hearing the rumbling and it was loud.
Katy made the point earlier, he was raised with this and he isn’t shaking it. This is something I underestimated. I thought he would play it safe 1st term and ram all kinds of crap through 2nd. I didn’t forsee the “don’t waste a crisis mentality” and I didn’t think he would be this dumb. I knew he wasn’t the super genius everyone was claiming, but he has been downright stupid.

“With respect to the words general welfare, I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators.”
– James Madison
Much of the civil service shouldn’t be there. Smaller federal government is the main call. ANd I have no idea what the argument could be that Federal workers need to be unionized, but I can’t see anyone arguing that with a straight face. If the federal government can’t be trusted to deal fairly with its workers, within the confines of actual contracts, then how can the same entity be trusted to deal fairly with the people? A unionized government workforce is a contradiction from the very start. They can’t strike, so what is the union for? To organize illegal sick strikes?

Upstater85 on March 22, 2009 at 1:26 AM
If you were a working adult during the Carter years, things seemed incredibly grim, and our country seemed like it was in an irreversible downward spiral.
And then, the most amazing thing happened. It was morning again in America, and we have had near constant growth, with little inflation for over twenty years.
No matter how much damage is done, we can survive and blossom again.

The pols aren’t listening anymore, they just aren’t; they don’t care what we have to say or how we say it.

Prop 8 was a state matter and under their system was in fact a defacto Constitutional Amendment….watching the SCofCa decide that the voters *may* not be allowed to use their system to make changes to the law within the confines of their rights was just about the best neon sign example of overreach exposure I’ve ever seen….

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” ~Sun-Tzu
“Afflicted with his congenial weakness, the insurgent would be foolish if he mustered whatever forces were available to him and attacked his opponent in a conventional fashion, taking as his objective the destruction of the enemy’s forces and the conquest of territory. Logic forces him instead to carry the fight to a different ground where he has better chance to balance the physical odds against him.
The population represents this new ground. If the insurgent manages to dissociate the population from the counterinsurgent, to control it physically, to get its active support, he will win the war because, in the final analysis, the exercise of political power depends on the tacit or explicit agreement of the population or, at worst, on its submissiveness.
Thus the battle for the population is a major characteristic of the revolutionary war.” ~David Galula, “Counterinsurgency Warfare”
Adopt their model? No, not exactly. Fight with a focus on winning the key terrain? Absolutely. Would Marxism had a chance in early America? Never. Why? The Christian work ethic prevented such thought. No man would have even considered having the government provide for him and his family or educate his children. No one would have looked to the government to care for the widows and orphans: that was the job of the local church. What about now? What changed?
I’m merely pointing out the terrain on which we must fight this war. This is not a war of bullets, but of concepts and ideas.

I really like Glenn Beck! At first I wasn’t sure. But I listen to him while I am working. There is something special about that man. He talks about issues and scenario’s that I want to hear. We have to have guidance and he does that. We had a We Surround Them last Friday in Orcutt, Ca. at Giovanni’s. I couldn’t go because I was working. My friend said it was awesome. I was a Democrat since 18. Changed to Republican last year, and on this Wed. will be the BIG 53! I only had a word, never voted for a Democrat! I voted for Palin. McCain pretty much threw the race. He wasn’t serious because he knew The Man Child paid for it. But he was lesser Evil.

Reagan only needed a few years to turn it around. I have faith that there are still fine men and women who love our country and will work to bring it back to life. And even if it’s not for my generation, then for those yet to come.
So, keep the faith.

I agree with much of what you wrote, except for this last bit.
It’s also a war of images and feelings. I have no doubt that conservatism can win a war of concepts and ideas, but lately it has done incredibly poorly at winning image and feeling contests. We need people who are charismatic and charming and devoted to serving the Constitution and the People, and not devoted to serving themselves.
Loxodonta on March 22, 2009 at 1:47 AM
I think some in the GOP are slower to wake up to their opening than their constituents. How many Dems voted for Iraq because they didn’t want to be seen against it? Eric Cantor voted for the tax on bonuses this week supposedly to keep the issue in the public longer. Maybe true, maybe not but most voted because they were not wanting to take an unpopular stand in light of the pitchforks.
The bloom is off the rose though, and it isn’t quite as risky to be against Obama’s policies as it is being against him. Recent polls are showing rapidly eroding support to his policies. Reps. may not all be listening to us, but show me one who doesn’t follow the polls like the Bible.

Reagan did wonderful things, I barely missed the chance to vote for him over Carter. But he couldn’t do all he wanted, lots of damage from Carter endured (can you say CRP?).
Heck, if you look at it like a biological system, our Republic has been accumulating toxins and tumors and DNA transcription errors for a very long time. Time heals many things and refines others but it has not been as kind to us. Obama intends to deliver lethal doses of damage to our government, and his associates have long salivated over the prospect of it’s destruction.
The enemies that Reagan kept at bay are themselves now resurgent, known as Russia, and the enemy that showed us it’s medieval face in Iran and Beirut during his time have become a festering cancer throughout much of the world and we are currently engaged in a half-hearted war with them as they careen towards nuclear weapons. Well, they already have them in Pakistan, so I suppose I should say careen towards universal possession of nuclear weapons.
There are lots of bad guys out there, many committed to our destruction. Team Zero is aligned with many of them in spirit and certainly in terms of appeasement.
These are dangerous times and I really wish I knew what kind of happy juice you are on because I could use some!
I don’t think a simple change of administration will suffice. The Clintons left a shadow government in the CIA, as evidenced by the Plame Game mentioned in this thread. Obama has incorporated the Clintons into his government most likely to neutralize their willingness to use that shadow government against him, and is most certainly turning it to his use and he will have it “properly” programmed before he departs office.
Carter was a disaster, but he didn’t intend to be a disaster. Obama does. I fear the worst. That blossoming may be impossible without a very traumatic rebirthing.

I truly believe those tea parties are going to work. I attended the Chicago party on February 27th, it’s was cold and snowy and we had a reported 500 people there. Not a bad showing for only having about a week and half prep time.
But there was this feeling in the air, that we were making a difference just by the response of folks passing by. With this new 50% tax hike our new gov wants and the Blog/Burris crap, me thinks we may have a record breaking crowd.
Chicago Tea Party, April 15th, Daley Center. Be there or be square.

I was a young adult during his years. The difference between then and now, in my possible muddled memory, is that Carter didn’t go for such a huge outright power grab. As a matter of fact he seemed detached. I almost thought he was relieved not to win a second term. But maybe I am misremembering.

You’re giving Timmy G too much credit. This is all O’s doing. The rest are just Temp Workers that The One Saved from their sinful lives.
I heard that on Saturday nights, The One lets them all come to his room and watch movies and eat popcorn – Leni Riefenstahl movies, of course.

Removing our children from the orb of liberal indoctrination would probably be the most effect form of protest available. That’s pretty easy for me to say since my children are adults but it would send an power message.
