“A central aspect of the plan, which has already been announced by the administration, would give the government greater authority to take over and resolve problems at large troubled companies not now regulated by Washington, like insurance companies and hedge funds.
That proposal would, for instance, make it easier for the government to cancel bonus contracts like those given to executives at the American International Group, which have stoked a political furor. Under the proposal, the Treasury secretary would have the authority to seize and wind down a struggling institution after consulting with the president and upon the recommendation of two-thirds of the Federal Reserve board.”

“You take a look around you, the genuinely successful people that you see who you want to be did not check their individualism at the door when they started their work. They didn’t check their self-interests at the door, and they didn’t check their self-respect, and they didn’t turn over the belief in themselves to somebody else. That’s all I’m talking about and that’s under assault by this administration, which wants to control and limit freedom, ’cause the only way Obama can get the power he wants and the Democrats can get the power they want is if you willingly turn it over to them, by getting rid of your self-interest, your self-respect and holding your best interests at heart. Your best interests do not coincide with your government’s, especially now.”

I was working 12 hours a day and had over an hour commute each way. What I most remember is one headline:

I’m waiting for Obama’s.

Loxodonta on March 22, 2009 at 2:02 AM
LOL! True on that.
sheebe on March 22, 2009 at 2:04 AM
I don’t have grandchildren. Sixty days ago I would have said, sadly I don’t have any grandchildren but lately, as I posted in another thread, I have stopped my none to subtle hints about marriage and grandchildren. Too unsure of the future, be it financial or ideological.

I can’t make the Chicago tea party but I’ll be there in spirit; we’re breaking out the horses to try our hand with a homemade furrow plow, believe it or not. Should be interesting.

I don’t know where your children stand, but my mother is convinced that conservatives will outnumber liberals in a few generations – you know, those vans full of 17 member families aren’t O’s biggest supporters…

Institutions that are on the “public teat”, that is, those that have taken public funds to guarantee their survival, should be forced to have all employees live under the “GS” schedule for government employment wages, effective at the time they take the public funds. The general rule is this: If we backstop you then you live on public-sector salaries. End of discussion. If you object to this then return the public money and have a go of it on your own.

Well if things get brighter and conservatives make a stand that appears to be working, I will reverse course and make nagging my full time job. I know I wish I had had more than three.
Cindy Munford on March 22, 2009 at 2:13 AM
You’re right. “Conservatives”, specifically Christians, have abandoned the arts, or at least have willfully acknowledged the superiority of the aesthetics of the Marxists.
Cultural aesthetics are the outward expression of our morals and worldview. It all goes back to what we’re taught to value. Through use of media and mass psychology, people have come to learn that form is more important than substance. Through aesthetics, whether song lyrics or conversations and background props in tv shows or magazine ads, we’re taught that businessmen are evil misers; fathers are clueless, incompetent oafs who aren’t as smart as their children; Christians are irrational hypocrites; government provides safety and security in all areas of life…
Three things need to happen: 1) remove our children from the indoctrination centers we call public schools, 2) take an active role in our spheres of influence to change the culture by adopting and communicating a Christian worldview, and 3) support those in the media who have adopted and communicate a Christian worldview in their programming, magazines, music, etc.

Taking your kids out of public schools sounds like a great idea and would be good for them in most cases, but if Team Zero follows the European model we won’t have that option available to us. Don’t forget how fond Zero is of the word “mandatory”.
I Germany you will lose your children if you try to home school. One family decided to take one of their daughters out of school because she was doing poorly, and she excelled under her parents care, but the government, after trying to force the entire family to undergo psychoanalysis, finally offered to let them home teach their daughter, but only at the price of having the other five children removed from their home.
Germany is littered with orphanages and they are not mostly orphans, they are captives of the government. We have so much more potential damage to fear from these despicable radicals than a mere economic depression.

Seriously, I love the idea of the Tea Party’s and would gladly attend one if my work schedule doesn’t conflict (still got to pay my own bills ya know) but I don’t know if it’s going to be enough to save this nation from the disaster unfolding before our eyes.

They aren’t actually my horses, they belong to my neighbor, but we use them to go hunting, camping, trekking, etc. One of my shop guys welded up a horse-drawn plow just for the hell of it so we decided to start tearing up a nearby field at different times of spring to see how it works.
Yes, we in Minnesota really are batshat crazy and have nothing better to do than plow a field for no apparent reason.

Yes, I share your fear; however, we should take comfort that homeschooling became “popular” during Clinton’s Presidency. Further, I think we also need to keep our eyes on the individual states. I think CA and NY will be quicker to ban homeschooling than O himself (they will work on behalf of The One, though).

Refer to it as recovering a lost art. There may be many that need to recovered before this mess is all over. You would be amazed at how much your preparations and those of others mention on HA have be in mind. I am totally unprepared and will have to go the non-perishable food and water route. Something is better than nothing, and hopefully the prep won’t be necessary but I’m not sitting idly by while waiting to find out.
Odd things have been occurring up in my area; lights have been seen in houses that are vacant, cars and “odd” looking people slowly cruising through the neighborhood, houses broken into. A guy at a town meeting told of finding his mastiff farm dog half beaten to death and his pole-barn ransacked.
Weird enough happenings that people are getting spooked, it’s more than a little creepy as it seems a bad element is reconning our area.

The Obama Depression won’t be the FDR Depression where “we’re all in this together”. Our cultural fractures and the damage from racial demagoguery and Marxist politics have radically altered our culture. It’s spooky.

Maquis on March 22, 2009 at 2:40 AM
A final thought before I go to bed my friends.
In every time, man has been faced with the same dilemma. We all are comfortable with our present life and comforts. As were our ancestors in the 1700’s. relativity speaking, they had a better way of life than most other people in the world. But at some point they decided that the fight for freedom and liberty from England was worth jeopardizing all that comfort. Are you prepared to jeopardize your comfort to insure a just republic for your children and grandchildren? Are you willing to step outside your comfort zone and say that “I am not happy with the direction of our country and I will force change if need be”.
Our prudent course is to demand candidates for public office that will support our ideals. And in 2010 do everything we can to put those folks in charge. But we must also understand that the bulk of the electorate are uneducated about the issues and we may well lose at our attempt to effect change.
At that point, what are you willing to do? What comforts are you willing to sacrifice to insure a prosperous future for your descendants. We have had the advantage of having selfless ancestors that sacrificed all they had for us. The question is, do you have that same determination?
Good night all
conservnut on March 22, 2009 at 2:40 AM
Yes, me too. But in this case, I was not referring to Obama’s style of elitist intellectual jargon, I was referring to Knucklehead’s far more common feminine technical jargon, i.e. “thingy.” That’s even worser.

The best kind: tradesmen, craftsmen, self-starters, family-oriented, hunters and gun owners.
Unfortunately we don’t have our own city police force and must rely on county sheriffs for patrolling; there is a bad element nibbling at our fringes and it will probably get worse before it gets better.

I remember a time when husband and wife could be of different parties and have little spats about it and then “make up.” Today, I bet there are few marriages that could survive spouses of different party registration.
We need to stop this divisiveness, but most of the time, I can only talk to a liberal without mentioning anything political or cultural without being called a name or getting yelled at. And lately, I am finding it increasingly difficult to keep quiet or talk “nice.” It’s a dilemma.
Loxodonta on March 22, 2009 at 2:48 AM
Yeah, the demonization of Conservatives and the hyper-sensitization of the liberals makes inter-species communication very difficult.

I do understand, and have used that approach for much of the last 20 years. However, it gets tiresome to hear so many others who feel completely free to talk openly about their beliefs, and hear all the agreements, and see all the heads nod, while I cannot express myself freely at all, and instead must create clever ways to cross-dress my beliefs in clothing acceptable to liberals.
It’s oppressive.
Even so, I have to re-learn to be patient with irrational, non-factual liberal thinking. And feel empathy for them, as well. For, no matter how delusional I think their thinking is, and no matter how oppressive they can be toward me, they are still human beings and that humanness deserves respect.

DarkCurrent on March 22, 2009 at 9:55 AM
I’m still here.
sven thinks I need to learn a lesson about Democrats and dealing with the left etc. I am not naive. I don’t need any lessons. I just know that 51% beats 49% and if you want to win..you have to find a way to be in the 51%.
That is why there was such a thing as Reagan Democrats. There are a lot of Democrats who are not going to be comfortable with many of Obama’s stances. That is why Democrats ran blue dogs, to win in certain places where a liberal Democrat could not win.
Republicans need to find a way to reach those kinds of people. I think they can.

I am not ready to give up on the people yet and sven have you stopped to think that as much as we hate what is going on, there are an equal amount of people, still in the glow of our historic election, that would fight back? And then there would be the people who believe everything you believe, except the solution. I really liked the idea of taking children out of public schools. Obviously that would require a coordinated effort with the help of people like me who’s children are grown. If that isn’t feasible then we need some other BIG statement.

Good points.
This government takeover is clearly an Obama Administration take-over – and an end-run around the Democrat Establishment in Congress.
Dodd has already refused to “take one for the team” and outed the Administration on the AIG bonus issue. It is obvious he was supposed to get hit by pitch to advance the plan. But he balked.
Dodd & the rest of the Dems are starting to see the Obama(read Axlerod,Rahm,Soros)Plan will strip them of their power just as Chavez dissolved the congress. Obama & co. have little to no respect for their fellow Dems and only treat them as useful idiots. This is why he went on the Tent-Revival/Jay Leno tour while the Dems got saddled with the heavy lifting. Obama detached himself – figuratively & actually from the dirty dealings. It’s brilliant really.
Absolute power mean never having to share it with anyone.

As an addendum to Rush’s statement about the threats to individualism, it’s a good time to note something which has not been covered in the MSM: Namely that Barack Obama thinks we should emulate South Korea when it comes to education, by lengthening the school day/week/year (something which I adamantly oppose).
South Korea’s culture is very different from our own, and the individual plays second fiddle. See Korean Family Values.
Perhaps one of these days Obama will find something to like about this country, instead of this constant need to make us more like Europe or Asia.
Buy Danish on March 22, 2009 at 2:40 PM
Read the linked article and failed to undersand why Korean family values are a problem or at odds with American family values.
We could shorten the school year and come out ahead if US teachers on average were up to typical east Asian standards. Actually, we could shorten the school year and come out ahead with the teachers we have.
