Video: Good Morning, Iran!
posted at 9:37 am on March 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama sent a video message to the “people and the leaders of Iran,” a holiday greeting for Nowruz, their New Year celebration. For the most part, it’s a benign, generic message of friendship, although Obama does gently tell Tehran that threats and terrorism will keep them from their “rightful place” in the community of nations:
Stephen Hayes provides a transcript for the more meaningful parts:
So in this season of new beginnings I would like to speak clearly to Iran’s leaders. We have serious differences that have grown over time. My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community. This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect. You, too, have a choice. The United States wants the Islamic Republic of Iran to take its rightful place in the community of nations. You have that right — but it comes with real responsibilities, and that place cannot be reached through terror or arms, but rather through peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization. And the measure of that greatness is not the capacity to destroy, it is your demonstrated ability to build and create.
“Demonstrated ability to build and create”? Other than the nuclear weapons it’s building, what exactly does that mean? Iran has to import most of its manufactured goods. It has to import gasoline, despite being an oil-rich nation, because it can’t refine its own crude output. The Russians are building their nuclear plants.
Hayes warns that forgetting Iran’s ties to terrorists and their efforts to kill Americans in Iran is dangerous business. He’s right, but I don’t see this video as evidence (yet) of that kind of amnesia. It’s a fairly generic example of diplomacy through direct communication, not all that much different than what we used to do with Voice of America. Obama offers a friendship message and speaks of the carrots in an outreach without publicly mentioning the sticks. That makes sense in a friendship message; we want to build affection for America, especially with younger Iranians, and insulting their leadership and issuing threats in a Nowruz message would hardly help.
If we’re dropping the sticks altogether, that’s definitely a problem.

They are constantly talkin’ and talkin’, always trying to change the subject, never sticking to one train of thought, always something new, different, quite often in the same sentence, never reaching a conclusion, but at the same time always trying to get your agreement to something, anything.
Obama is doing the same.

Obama is a serial person that can’t handle two events simultaneously. He has the fiscal condition of this country so screwed up that he simply doesn’t have the time or aptitude to effectively deal with our enemies . . . ergo, pacify and pander to them. Furthermore, his only real objective is to completely transform this once great Republic into a Marxist utopia. Meanwhile his alter ego Pelosi is busy trashing the Constitution on his behalf. Unfortunately, those staunch defenders of the Constitution, the Republicans, are mimicking the three monkeys that “see no evil; hear no evil; and speak no evil. In the common vernacular . . . we’re screwed.

If Obama thinks he was addressing the Islamic leaders in Iran he blew it. They think Naw Ruz is a pagan festival which undermines Islamic piety. The people tend to ignore the ayatollahs in this but they are not in a position to decide important matters.
Note that Naw Ruz is a holy day for the Baha’i faith but they are hated by the ruling cult, considered as heretics, thus not accorded even the dhimmi status of the people of the book — Christians and Jews — and are thus systematically persecuted.

Brat4life on March 20, 2009 at 10:15 AM
He did.
The worst U.S foreign policy “mistake” ever was made by a Democrat. At the close of World War II, Franklin Deleno Roosevelt gave away all of Eastern Europe to the fascist Joseph Stalin in the agreement at Yalta, after the Western Allies had successfully fought and won its freedom. As far as biggest “mistake” ever in U.S. foreign policy, this one easily wins the prize.
Perhaps the second worst U.S foreign policy “mistake” ever was also made by a Democrat. Soon after becoming President in 1977, Jimmy Carter launched a deliberate campaign to undermine the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlevi, a good friend and ally of the United States. The Shah of Iran fell from power as a direct result of Jimmy Carter’s withdrawal of support and Iran fell into the hands of the tyrannical and anti-American Ayatollah Khomeini. This was the key event in history that led to the terrorist supporting state of Iran today that now threatens to develop nuclear weapons to destroy both the United States and Israel. (Pretty big “mistake” hun?)
I am fairly sure the top one-hundred worst U.S. foreign policy “mistakes” ever made were all by Democrats, but I just don’t have time to run them all down.

He sent a warship into the black sea and Condoleeza Rice with a military escort, all in the name of humanitarian assistance. Meanwhile Obama (who was on the armed forces comittee you will note) was body surfing in Hawaii. Bush was at the end of his (second)term in office and working with a congress that hated his guts and an American people who had a very low opinion of him. What did you expect Bush to do? Start a shooting war with russia 3 months before the end of his term?
None of this distracts from the fact that Obama has proven to be in over his head and a completely empty suit and just as inexperienced as we all thought him to be during the campaign.
Mord on March 20, 2009 at 10:32 AM
take it easy pal…that kind of thinking is what got us running into Iraq like we were saving the world and ourselves from the most imminent threat we ever faced.
reagan’s axiom for dealing with the USSR was “trust, but verify.” if we do not provide for some sort of maneuvering on iran’s part…if we dont take at least SOME of what they say on face value…we get nowhere. we need to give them enough breathing room to make moves, and then we need to verify those moves. should we act as you’re ranting now, we will solve nothing and wind up going all in on the possibility that iran represents a grave threat.

Reagan also held a gun to their head by threatening to put a missile defense shield in Europe along side of NATO’s offensive missiles. His “Star Wars” initiative scared the hell out of the Russians, something they couldn’t afford to counter with their weak economy. Reagan made it clear he wouldn’t take any crap from the Ruskies.
Obama is bending over and presenting himself. The Iranians received their confirmation of this and are probably busting a gut laughing at his “Dialogue” initiative and thanking their lucky stars that Reagan isn’t running the show anymore.

Except Obama hasnt actually DONE anything with regards to Iran. He made a video. That’s pretty meaningless, whether you want a hard line with Iran or a much softer one…a freaking video is no action. I for one support using the missile shield on Russia given their recent saber rattling…but Iran is a bit of a different situation. their capabilities are so much weaker than the soviet unions were…and thus ones limit in terms of threatening them should follow suit. the threats we used with russia are overkill when levied on Iran. Iran is more of a fiesty Cuba than evil empire in terms of capability…we cannot ignore this when considering our own actual actions.
