Palin rips Obama for Special Olympics joke

posted at 4:31 pm on March 20, 2009 by Allahpundit

Commenters in the previous thread assure me that they’re not outraged at Obama’s joke, they’re merely outraged at the double standard conservatives are held to when they say something impolitic. Let’s see how many stick to that position in this one. A thousand comments or bust, baby!

“I was shocked to learn of the comment made by President Obama about Special Olympics,” Governor Palin said. “This was a degrading remark about our world’s most precious and unique people, coming from the most powerful position in the world.

“These athletes overcome more challenges, discrimination and adversity than most of us ever will. By the way, these athletes can outperform many of us and we should be proud of them. I hope President Obama’s comments do not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community.”

Exit question: Any wild guesses as to how the media will report this tonight? Here’s a hint from yesterday’s ADN: “The biggest single chunk of money that Palin is turning down is about $170 million for education, including money that would go for programs to help economically disadvantaged and special needs students.”

Update: Maria Shriver chips in too:

In a statement this morning, Shriver said, “While I am confident that President Obama never intended to offend anyone, the response that his comments have caused, coupled with the reaction of a primetime audience, demonstrate the need to continue to educate the non-disabled community on the issues that confront those with a developmental disability.”

“Often times we don’t realize that when we laugh at comments like this it hurts millions of people throughout the world,” added Shriver.

I just read your last 1 comment and realized one thing.

1. You are a dumbo and an old one at that.

The Wall on March 21, 2009 at 12:43 PM

When you can’t debate the issues, ad hominem always comes in handy.

ddrintn on March 21, 2009 at 1:45 PM

Exactly. Just proves my point once again. The Ad Hominem attacks, the endless repetition, the childish ‘ROFLMAO’ just comes to show the weakness of their arguments.

Yeah, I might be an “old dumbo” in the fact that I actually remember the 1970s. The attacks against Ronald Reagan after the Ford-Carter election in 1976 was relentless and very similar to the ones we see against Palin today. Reagan was attacked as a ‘lightweight’, ‘dumb’, ‘extremist’, and worse, often from fellow Republicans. The media kept attacking him relentlessly, often pointing to questionable polls suggesting he would lose in a landslide if he ran against Carter in 1980.

We all know how that ended. In retrospect, I was convinced Reagan was attacked because he was feared as a formidable candidate. Same with Palin today.

I was just getting out of college when Reagan was elected, and didn’t follow politics. I always felt like I must be stupid to like him because I heard so many criticisms of him…he was ‘ just an actor reading lines written by others’, he was ‘a cowboy who’d start WW3′, an anti-intellectual, etc… It wasn’t until 20 years later when I went back and listened to what he said and what he did that I began to realize how the media and politicians spin and obfuscate to shape public opinion.

Some people are fired up about her. I like her, but I’m not fired up. She’s one of the few who seem to think like me. Jindal’s another. I’m sure there are more, just as I’m sure Obama isn’t one of those.

That said, I donated to her PAC. I trust her enough to believe she’ll use my money wisely. If Jindal had a PAC, I’d send some his way too.

Wow! Today Ben Smith’s Blog at Politico had to retract what he wrote about Sarah slashing Alaska’s Special Olympics Budget (which caused Sarah to get a lot of hateful comments on Ben’s Blog):

“UPDATE: Think Progress noted during the campaign that she once proposed cutting Special Olympics funding. [Although the claims that she cut funding for special needs are apparently false].”

Read it for yourselves at: http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0309/Palin_whacks_Obama_on_Special_Olympics.html

Thanks to the outstanding work of Conservatives4Palin.com:

Great to see Politico make that correction. We have to be willing to fight the MSM smears and lies. Way to go C4P!!!

Ben Smith’s Blog at Politico has posted that claims that Sarah tried to cut Special Olympics funding are false. He said the opposite on his Blog yesterday which generated a ton of hateful anti-Sarah comments!

Here’s what Ben wrote today:

Hi friends,

Aside from the NCAA Basketball, we are following here the NCAA Wrestling and one of the top matches is from an Edinboro student vs. an Arizona State, Rubles is his last name I think, I didn’t get to see the whole match…he is like top-notch 3rd or 4th in the US, but guess what-he is MISSING A LEG!

It is a challenge to wrestle this guy because they have to get to his level (knees) to be able to wrestle and it is difficult! He has 150+ lbs. of strength, of course, on his top part of the body so wrestlers are having a hard time with him because he cannot stand up…if the other wrestler messes up and lets him get a leg, he gets a grab. Brilliant!

Saw this at TeamSarah…

President Obama has announced that he intends to reverse important Department of Health and Human Services regulations that protect the right of conscience for health care professionals. In short, if a person or hospital refuses to participate in any event surrounding an abortion, the person or entity can be discriminated against.

Recently we received an e-mail from Mary, a health care worker and Susan B. Anthony List member, in Virginia, who told us,

“I can assure you that my colleagues and myself will leave the profession rather than be forced to participate in such activities…I will not go against the beliefs I have lived my entire life following. Our country already has a critical shortage of nurses, doctors, and technicians to care for the growing population who require experienced, dedicated workers to provide the extremely difficult and highly technical procedures available. We have to take an oath to ‘do no harm’ before we receive our license to work. I honor my promises, no matter the cost to me personally.”

By law, the Obama Administration must open up this regulation change to public comment for 30 days. This comment period ends on April 9th. Act now!

President Obama’s actions are a direct assault on the rights and freedoms of so many doctors and nurses who serve us in our time of need.

Please tell the Department of Health and Human Services that our government needs to protect the rights of conscience for Mary and thousands of other health care professionals!

In particular, if you work in the health care profession, please tell the Department of Health and Human Services your story and why you want your right of conscience to be protected. And if you know someone who is a health care professional, please forward this to them right now.

The deadline is fast approaching, please act now. Doctors and nurses should not be forced to participate in abortions.

A Palintologist is someone who wants to vote for someone “dumb like them” and supports their single issue – abortion. They are economic illiterates, jealous of those who have the intellect and skill to create their own wealth.

I haven’t taken a single cheap shot at any children. I have also refuted every mythical statement about Palin from the Palintologists.

The question is simple is she the best and most qualified person we have to run the country? The answer is no. I mean come on. If the rabid defense of her is just to spite the MSM and their perceived attack on “your” values then we have larger issues here.

Maybe if Romney had more of a record to run on, he wouldn’t have lost to John McCain. He will get picked off even more quickly, if he tries running in 2012. Paul has run twice and never captured more than 1% of the popular vote. Barr did even worse than that. If Poptech wants to support these also-ran , Hotair has given Romney and Paul a thread in the past month. They barely broke 100 comments, while Palin’s now has over 1200 comments, mostly because Poptech and others are compelled to faithfully regurgitate their talking points, and the rest of us will keep pointing out how wrong they are. It’s good that Palin can inspire this much enthusiasm.

The facts on Gov. Sarah Palin’s Oil Tax Hike-Reversing Corruption
Every accusation made by PoopDeck against Palin can be easily disproved.

Jenfidel on March 22, 2009 at 1:50 AM

The measure replaces legislation passed in 2006, called the “Petroleum Profits Tax,” that many Alaskans believe was clouded by a corruption scandal that has engulfed the state’s largest oil services company and resulted in the conviction of three former legislators as part of a widening federal bribery probe.

“We have revisited a tainted oil tax system called PPT. We have fixed it,” the Republican governor said at Wednesday’s signing ceremony, held at an Anchorage vocational school.

SCANDAL! Palin reformed the system, and the oil companies half-heartedly complained. “This will effect future development.”

Really hurt Alaskans, huh? Getting their dividend checks and having a budget surplus and a brilliant new energy plan and a natural gas pipeline.

The facts on Gov. Sarah Palin’s Oil Tax Hike-Reversing Corruption

Jenfidel on March 22, 2009 at 1:50 AM

Besides the fact that your computer illiteracy is demonstrated by your inability to link properly, she raised oil taxes from 22%-25% = FACT. That is called a tax increase. I realize your populist rhetoric of “fighting corruption” brainwashed people into thinking Palin is some sort of Batman figure. She is no such thing.

Really hurt Alaskans, huh? Getting their dividend checks and having a budget surplus and a brilliant new energy plan and a natural gas pipeline.

You’re such an idiot, you didn’t even read the article you posted!
If you had, you’d find out that Alaska has a $6.8 billion surplus to cover any shortfall caused by the oil price drop and that Alaska’s budget stays in the black without any state sales taxes or personal state income taxes!
“Socialism” (a moving target as defined by you) has nothing in the slightest to do with it.
Effective leadership and management of public funds do.

Jenfidel on March 22, 2009 at 3:31 AM

That is a brilliant statement from Palin; I’m not even a Palin fan so it’s not because of that. BTW, I’ve been consistently horrified about this “joke”, I posted that night in headlines how outrageous it was and I’m glad that Palin is coming out with this.

Alaska sees $1.25 billion budget gap on oil price drop (Reuters)

Poptech on March 22, 2009 at 2:06 AM

Soaring oil prices of the recent past, coupled with an oil-tax change that takes advantage of high prices, allowed the state to sock away surplus revenues. Lawmakers last spring set aside $5 billion in various savings accounts, and later approved an initiative championed by Palin that sent one-time $1,200 payments to nearly every resident to help offset high energy costs.

Sarah Palin actually knows how to exercise fiscal responsibility. When they had a surplus in the budget they saved the money in anticipation of leaner times ahead.

Palin is also well versed on Alaska’s potential as an energy source for the nation to become less dependant on foreign oil.

Her integrity is stellar. She has made quite a name for herself challenging corruption and defeating corrupt politicians in elections. Her approval ratings are sky high because she is a great Governor.

The leftist hate for Sarah Palin comes from the fact that she is a strong, independent, beautiful woman who is not only pro-life – she has made the choice that most offends liberals.

She chose to deliver, love and raise a Down’s syndrome child.

Liberals can’t stand that. A woman actually choosing to love her Down’s syndrome child instead of aborting it.

Gee… Mr. ObamaNazi is the one who called a baby a punishment.
-
I’m not obsessed with that practice so long as you don’t make people who think that it’s murder perform them, make me pay for them, teach my offspring that they are the preferred method of dealing with an unplanned pregnancy, encourage young (12 to 17 year old) girls to sneak around their parents input and make what I and many others consider to be an infinitely more grave mistake than getting pregnant (you know… by aborting the future in a moment of panic and coercion).
-
So, in short… please… have all the abortions you want. I surrender to the fact that you think they are a good thing, and to the fact that I can’t change your mind on that, and to the fact that for now they are legal.
-
In fact I’ll go you one better… Perhaps if enough thinking adults who want them have them, that self hate gene will fade from the pool.
-
Do not however take this all to mean that I have anything other than contempt for a man who in a public speech designed to advance his political career… wishes for his still very young daughters to have an abortion in stead of a baby should the baby be deemed inconvenient.
-
As for the whole special olymipics comment… Distraction from this turds larger crappy ass mistakes.

Yeah people with bank accounts. Just like during the Depression. In a fractional reserve banking system it is always vulnerable to bank runs. This is not some conspiracy this is a problem with our banking system that is impossible with a 100% Gold Standard. You people are like financial morons. Banks are perpetually bankrupt and can never redeem everyone’s money at the same time.

Poptech on March 21, 2009 at 8:22 AM

I’m not here to argue against a gold standard, but to point out that you can still operate a fractional reserve banking system using gold as a currency standard.

FACT: Alaska has no budget surplus:

“Sliding oil prices and production have prompted Alaska officials to forecast a state budget shortfall of $1.25 billion in the next fiscal year instead of the surplus they predicted just two months ago.” – Reuters

Poptech

For starters, they are FORECASTING a shortfall – one that would turn into a surplus is oil prices were to rise once again.

So the reality is that there is currently neither a budget surplus NOR a budget deficit. Just predictionms.

From the very Rueters article you posted (if you bother to read more than the opening paragraph, which I don’t expect you did):

Soaring oil prices of the recent past, coupled with an oil-tax change that takes advantage of high prices, allowed the state to sock away surplus revenues. Lawmakers last spring set aside $5 billion in various savings accounts, and later approved an initiative championed by Palin that sent one-time $1,200 payments to nearly every resident to help offset high energy costs.

So here we have ACTUAL surplus in the budget. Not a ‘projection’ that is subject to change. This is an honest to goodness $5 billion SURPLUS under Palin’s stewardship.

Sarah Palin actually had the vision to foresee the coming economic crisis and took steps to prepare Alaska for it. Alaska is perhaps better position financially than any other state in the iunion because of Sarah Palin.

Oh, and that ‘tax’ that you seem to think is somehow socialist?

http://www.reuters.com/article/bondsNews/idUSN0242497720071002

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Oct 2 (Reuters) – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Tuesday released a proposed bill to alter the state’s year-old Petroleum Profits Tax, which has been clouded by a bribery and corruption probe.

The probe has already netted guilty pleas and a conviction last week in a trial of a former state House speaker.

Palin’s bill combines a 25-percent tax on oil companies’ Alaska profits with an escalator clause for times of high prices, a 10-percent gross production tax at times of low prices and a credit for capital investment.

Dude – do you even KNOW what socialism is? Apparently not since your comment makes no fucking sense (typical for you idiot liberals).

Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating public or state ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and a society characterized by equality for all individuals, with a fair or egalitarian method of compensation.

Nope – nothing in there about a sliding scale for taxation of oil profits. You really don’t have a clue.
