Palin rips Obama for Special Olympics joke

Commenters in the previous thread assure me that they’re not outraged at Obama’s joke, they’re merely outraged at the double standard conservatives are held to when they say something impolitic. Let’s see how many stick to that position in this one. A thousand comments or bust, baby!

“I was shocked to learn of the comment made by President Obama about Special Olympics,” Governor Palin said. “This was a degrading remark about our world’s most precious and unique people, coming from the most powerful position in the world.

“These athletes overcome more challenges, discrimination and adversity than most of us ever will. By the way, these athletes can outperform many of us and we should be proud of them. I hope President Obama’s comments do not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community.”

Exit question: Any wild guesses as to how the media will report this tonight? Here’s a hint from yesterday’s ADN: “The biggest single chunk of money that Palin is turning down is about $170 million for education, including money that would go for programs to help economically disadvantaged and special needs students.”

Update: Maria Shriver chips in too:

In a statement this morning, Shriver said, “While I am confident that President Obama never intended to offend anyone, the response that his comments have caused, coupled with the reaction of a primetime audience, demonstrate the need to continue to educate the non-disabled community on the issues that confront those with a developmental disability.”

“Often times we don’t realize that when we laugh at comments like this it hurts millions of people throughout the world,” added Shriver.

But yeah, posting Mitt’s impeccable resume is a sure argument-winner. Well, at least up until his governorship. We’ll forget about that.

Won what? Most posts? Biggest ass? Most repetitions of “ROFLMAO?” Most self-righteous? Biggest number of fake resumes? Most annoying? I’d be willing to grant him all those awards.

Poptech actually reminds me of Dilbert’s theories about meetings: that the reason some people always get their way is that everyone else in the meeting really had to go to the bathroom, and they all just give in so it will be over.

Nah, he nailed you guys on Sarah Palin.

The funniest quote is the one from the her debate:

Yeah. You think he’s brilliant because … he agrees with you.

He’s obviously unbalanced on the subject of Sarah Palin. If he had an ounce of integrity, he’d admit that his “resume” of Palin is cherry-picked to ignore everything good she’s accomplished, and proves nothing. Instead, he posts it like a fact.

But I’m not going to waste my time responding over and over to his tripe. Stupid statements don’t become any smarter for being repeated.

What determines the worth of the American dollar?

Poptech on March 21, 2009 at 8:14 AM

The Federal Government – which issues it as a currency.

Can you answer me why there is NO NATION IN THE WORLD currently using the gold standard?

Your argument is pretty lame when NOBODY is following your almighty gold standard.

It is a relic of less civilized populations that were enamored with the shiny metal. That is it.

If these early peoples decided that Mayonnaise was the greatest thing ever – then you would currently be advocating a Mayonnaise Standard.

Mr Purple on March 23, 2009 at 1:23 AM

So, SOMEBODY was behind a run on withdraws.

Whether it was Soros or not I don’t know – but he has a bit of a history manipulating currencies and I would imagine he would be as likely a suspect as anyone.

Mr Purple on March 21, 2009 at 5:34 AM

Yeah people with bank accounts. Just like during the Depression. In a fractional reserve banking system it is always vulnerable to bank runs. This is not some conspiracy this is a problem with our banking system that is impossible with a 100% Gold Standard. You people are like financial morons. Banks are perpetually bankrupt and can never redeem everyone’s money at the same time.

Poptech on March 21, 2009 at 8:22 AM

Doubtful. Once again your facts are twisted beyond any reasonable recognition.

Kanjorski said it was an electronic run that occurred over about 2 hours. This is not a bunch of ‘average Joe’s’ just deciding they need to move their money out of these markets within the same 2 hour time period on the same day.

Surely you aren’t trying to use that simpleton line of reasoning.

Kanjorski: “The Treasury opened its window to help. They pumped a hundred and five billion dollars into the system and quickly realized that they could not stem the tide. We were having an electronic run on the banks. They decided to close the operation, close down the money accounts, and announce a guarantee of $250,000 per account so there wouldn’t be further panic and there. And that’s what actually happened. If they had not done that their estimation was that by two o’clock that afternoon, five-and-a-half trillion dollars would have been drawn out of the money market system of the United States, would have collapsed the entire economy of the United States, and within 24 hours the world economy would have collapsed.”

Mr Purple on March 23, 2009 at 1:31 AM

Moderator: So you believe in cap and trade.

Palin: You bet I do

The Wall on March 23, 2009 at 12:33 AM

Typical of the deranged Palin haters – this comment never happened.

She was asked by Gwen Ifill if she supported capping carbon emissions. She said ‘I do’.

I think most people agree that carbon emissions should be reduced – but the REASON you want them reduced is the key.

Ifill was asking a question about global warming (which scientific evidence is proving to be a scam).

Palin isn’t interested in capping carbon emissions to combat global warming – she is in favor of it because it is a good idea to pollute less.

The warm-mongers are no longer interested in reducing pollution on the merits of reducing pollution.

The movement has been hijacked by a bunch of fear mongering wealth re-distribution activists looking at ‘cap and trade’ carbon policies to spread the wealth around via a mythical anthropogenic global warming disaster as the catalyst.

ddrintn on March 22, 2009 at 12:24 PM

Exactly a fantasy position YOU created AGAIN. I never claimed Romney was a Libertarian (I am a Conservative Libertarian BTW) he was and is the only GOP Candidate that has a good understanding of economics (besides Ron Paul).

Every time we refute your pathetic “arguments,” you change the subject and pretend we haven’t disproved what you asserted.

Jenfidel on March 22, 2009 at 3:05 PM

You haven’t refuted or disproven anything except to declare it so. This is typical Palintologist propaganda.

I’m not here to argue against a gold standard, but to point out that you can still operate a fractional reserve banking system using gold as a currency standard.

You do understand that, don’t you?

Saltysam on March 21, 2009 at 9:35 AM

Is there any chance that Poptech is willing to admit he doesn’t understand what he is talking about here?

Saltysam on March 22, 2009 at 4:31 PM

Oh wait this was a question? I assumed it was rhetorical as it is obvious to anyone who understands monetary history. The United States “Gold Standard” up until Nixon was one on a fractional reserve banking system. You are speaking the obvious and then declaring I don’t know what I am talking about? Give me a break. Ron Paul as an example are ultimately advocating for a 100% Gold Standard.

Student offended @ UMaryland;

Not so special after all

Scum. A word defined in the dictionary as a low, vile or worthless person or group of people. This word is usually used to describe someone with little to no class; someone who has a known tendency to bring people down with no expense to themselves. I never thought I would ever use this word to describe my president, the leader of the free world, the person in charge of making key decisions to ensure the great success of our nation.

However, in light of President Barack Obama’s recent remarks on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, no other description comes to mind…

Any carbon cap would include Carbon Dioxide which is NOT pollution. You people do not even realize what that would mean – Complete Government Control over energy production, dramatically increased prices for energy (electricity, gas ect..) and will negatively affect the economy.

I seem to remember reading something about the Kennedy family that President John F. Kennedy had a mentally disabled sister, who had been kept hidden from the public during his Presidency, and during the candidacy of Robert F. Kennedy. Maria Shriver is the daughter of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, another sister of John F. Kennedy, which means that one of Maria Shriver’s aunts was mentally disabled, while her uncle was President.

So, our super-cool wunderkind President flies to California to make fun of the disabled, and oops…the Governor’s wife has a mentally-disabled aunt, who was the sister of a former President. Profiles in Courage???

Now, what was that line about engaging the brain (or the Teleprompter) before opening mouth?

At the risk of inciting another five comments by you, I’ll ask anyway:

Do you have anything productive to add to this discussion? At least IMO, “productive” does not include: 1) demeaning Sarah Palin with half-truths that have nothing to do with the topic of the Special Olympics and the president’s inability to discuss it without a teleprompter; and 2) demeaning those of us who support Sarah Palin by insulting our intelligence. There are intelligent people who support all sorts of pols, even Obama (such as, for example, my mother).

In short, try keeping a civil tongue in your mouth (fingers?).

The only thing that Poptech won’t blame Sarah Palin is the blowing of Mt. Redoubt today.

However, if Poptech could really believe that Sarah did not know Africa was a continent (in her debate with Biden, Sarah mentioned withdrawing Alaskan funds from Darfur and her father was a school teacher)he could conceive of Sarah surreptitiously laying and setting off dynamite to activate the dormant volcano.

technopeasant on March 23, 2009 at 11:38 AM

Well look at the bright side – thanks to Poptech and others we’ve reached over 1363 comments.

Wow. Still clueless about what “cherry-picked” means.

Your so-called resume is dishonest in the minor details and dishonest in the big picture. You include irrelevancies such as the very limited beauty pageants she did years ago to get money for college, just to make her look petty. You ignore actual accomplishments that are relevant. You mention her role as head of the Oil and Gas commission, but only to say she resigned. You mention her unsuccessful run for lieutenant governor. If you’ve been elected governor, no one really counts it as a knock against you that you failed to win lieutenant governor some years before. Except people like you.

But at least you’re ROTFLYAO. For whatever that’s worth.

I think that the land is public land. The oil companies are independant corporations – not state owned entities.

The state of Alaska and the independent oil companies negotiated a deal that was fair to both sides. The Alaskan government decided instead of sitting on all the profits they would distribute a portion to the citizens who have allowed the oil companies to drill there.

That isn’t socialism.

If it was socialism the oil companies would be owned by the state.
