Video: Palin announces she’ll reject $515 million of stimulus money; Update: Actually, $288 million
posted at 7:50 pm on March 19, 2009 by Allahpundit
Excellent. She’s up for re-election next year and this move won’t do her any favors inside the state, so I can only assume it’s a sign that she’s keeping her options open for 2012.
“We will request federal stimulus funds for capital projects that will create new jobs and expand the economy,” Governor Palin said. “We won’t be bound by federal strings in exchange for dollars, nor will we dig ourselves a deeper hole in two years when these federal funds are gone. For instance, in order to accept what look like attractive energy funds, our local communities would be required to adopt uniform building codes. Government would then be required to police those codes. These types of funds are not sensible for Alaska.”…
“Our desire is to foster a discussion about what is true stimulus and what is just more federal interference in Alaskans’ lives through the growth of government,” Governor Palin said. “We think stimulus items devoted to government agency growth and program expansion ought to be examined in light of the funding needs already being addressed with our pending budget requests.”
Follow the link up top for the full press release or click the image and scroll down for video of her presser. According to the ADN, the biggest chunk of the money that she’s turning down would go to education, so look out for a “Palin hates children” story on “Countdown” tonight or tomorrow. She also promised to work with the legislature if they decide they want to invoke the stimulus’s “Sanford Amendment” and accept the money. Exit question: Er, is the “Sanford Amendment” constitutional? Survey says: No.
Update: My bad: Debbie Schlussel e-mails to note that Palin actually rejected $288 million, not $515 million. Overall, that means she’ll accept 69% of the funds. Sorry for the error.
Update: Why did Palin initially say she was rejecting roughly half the funds when the actual number’s just north of 30%? The ADN explains:
Palin first told the news media that she’s turning down nearly half the federal stimulus money — but later conceded that does not count the Medicaid money she is accepting. That brings down what she’s refusing to 31 percent of what the state government could get. Local governments and nonprofits could still compete for stimulus grants.

Those are exactly the funds he’s turning down if I’m not mistaken. Taking the funds only gets him further in the rut down the road when the federal funding runs out but the expectation for continued benefits is there.
Also – on this hurting Palin …
Alaska has a very strong independence movement – my guess is the woman scores political points each and every time she jabs a heel into the federal government’s eye.

Music to a taxpayers ears! There was eary talk that TN Gov. Bredesen (Democrat) would also reject part of the stimulus funds (unemployment) but he caved.

Hey what I saw was a Sate Governor doing due diligence and looking after the long term welfare of her State and constituents.
Governor Palin and her staff have obviously taken the time to examine Alaska’s stimulus entitlement and the provisions in it. Accepted only what will truly stimulate Alaska’s economy and rejected those provisions that do not, along with anything that would increase the size of Government and its role in peoples lives or anything that was unsustainable by the State Government once the stimulus funds ran out.
Really it this sort of fiscally responsible governance that the White House, Senate, and Congress should have exercised in the first place when the stimulus bill was written. Instead they decided that it didn’t really matter what the money was spent on just as long as they spent it all. It was like letting a five year old loose in a candy store and knowing that you wouldn’t get any change back from the fifty dollar note you just gave them.
Dreadnought223 on March 19, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Should be interesting to see how this plays out. Olbermann no doubt will take his shot soon.
aikidoka on March 19, 2009 at 10:15 PM
I heard that rumor too, but I have not confirmed that he has even threatened to not accept the unemployment funds.
I read this and I thought he might have, but if you read carefully, you realize that he has not:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-03-15-unemployment_N.htm
I read on in the article and it still does not say it will be rejected.
So I wonder????
Anyway, as far as hurting Palin, I agree with you. The people of Alaska are too independent. They do not like the Feds messing around their state. It is bad enough that the Feds own 70% of their state, but they cannot mine their own resources just to feed their families. These people are tired of taking orders from Washington.
The moment she said the following, many in Alaska will stand with her:

Um, there you go again, AP and Troll #37.
Governor Palin has been critical of the porkulus package since January 7 at the earliest, and was the first Republican governor to speak out about the burdens new spending programs would place on states once federal funding runs out. She has consistently stated that she believes the best use of federal funds is to spend those dollars on infrastructure and other projects (like the Kodiak defense facility and the pipeline) that benefit ALL Alaskans and in many cases the country as a whole, and create jobs immediately. While people like Jindal and Sanford were running around trying to make political hay by crowing that they would reject a measly hundred million or so from their share of the stimulus package, Gov. Palin remained on message, taking every opportunity to express her misgivings about the bill and apparently TAKING THE TIME TO READ IT, line by line it would appear, in order to determine what parts of it are and are not beneficial to Alaskans.
She’s thorough, she’s committed and she doesn’t feel compelled to be first to the finish line on every issue, or to claim credit for every victory. She’s too secure in her own convictions and accomplishments for that. You can split hairs and rationalize all day long but in the end we all know that the true leader here is Sarah Palin.

How can you claim anyone’s giving/taking the money back when instead of the federal government keeping the money, it’s getting passed to a state government? Sanford says he will reject money but doesn’t commit to a figure.
Jindal says he will reject $70 million, which is less than 3% of total stimulus money for Louisiana.
Sarah rejects a WHOPPING $515 MILLION, nearly HALF of all the stimulus money allotted for Alaska.
Sarah is by far the most fiscally conservative of the three.
Not to mention the most charismatic, the best fundrasier, etc, etc.
Is there any wonder why we love this woman?

I admit I’d be hard-pressed to turn down that money for my state if I were in that position.
But, thinking on it long enough one realizes that this simply can’t happen every few years. The root problems must be allowed to be fixed and it’s only going to happen with millions adjusting the economy in both the public and private sector…not just a handful of politicians in D.C. and 50 governors.
Those top politicians should be providing the environment for commerce to thrive…not figuring out how to bring high school dropouts up to the level of more responsible people who made better choices by bringing them down.

Not really. Jindal made the identical statement on Feb 22, as has Perry. Palin also made that statement on Feb 21. So I’m not seeing anything new here at all — the Stimulus was signed Feb 17, and it took each of these Governors about a week to read through the 1500 pages and figure out just how their states were about to get screwed.
The Republican Governors of what I would call the South (which includes Alaska) seem to all be on the same wavelength as to which programs are toxic.
As for the “Sanford Amendment”, I doubt it will pass Constitutional Muster if the Obama Administration decides to sue States which refuse to modify their internal governance.

Thanks a lot. That makes sense. I have no idea why the feds would want to get in the business of enforcing building codes. I would argue this isn’t even a state issue.
If you want to store radioactive materials, then it can affect me so some standards are in order. But the building code? I know in a place like Boone, NC where a lot of houses are up in the mountains the building code may become a real pain. Like if you build a house, you almost must adopt a building inspector – cuz he’s gonna be in your house so often. But those rules don’t apply to Raleigh, which is in the lowland.
Anyway, Palin is right here. Good for her.

AP, just an FYI, there appears to be some confusion about how much Palin is rejecting. The total allocated is 930 mil. She already accepted 14%, or 128 mil, for medicaid as part of the budget. Today, she requested 55% of the 930 mil, or 514 mil. That means she’s rejecting 288 mil, or 31% of allocated funds. But, unless I’m wrong, in her press conference today, she didn’t say she was rejecting almost half but was requesting 55%, which is technically correct.
At any rate, I’m not sure how that 515 mil figure got floated out there, but it appears to be a press mistake. See below.

In last Sunday’s Chicago Tribune, Prof. Ronald Rotunda, a constitutional law expert, had an article addressing this matter. He said it’s unconstitutional. He’s no quack. He and a colleague (John Nowak) are the authors of the seminal treatise on constitutional law: six volumes, they recently published the fourth edition. If you were to ask the Idiot-in-Chief, “What’s Nowak & Rotunda?” He’d say, “That’s where I’d always go to look when I was confused about a point concerning constitutional law.

Way to go, Sarah!!!
Sure, turning down federal “education” funds won’t earn her any praise from the elites from Hahvid and the New York Slimes, but Sarah’s SMARTER than them–as a former mayor and current Governor, she knows that most school funding comes from LOCAL Government, then State Government. If school systems accept a big, one-time infusion of Federal funds, they get addicted to the higher funding levels, and either there’s a huge cut the following year (and the schools blame the local and State governments), or the local and State governments need to pick up the slack and increase taxes.
For someone the MSM was eager to label as a ditz, Sarah Palin EXPLAINED herself clearly: “We won’t be bound by federal strings in exchange for dollars, nor will we dig ourselves a deeper hole in two years when these federal funds are gone.” In two years, when she’ll be up for re-election.
By 2010, and especially 2012, compared to the One from Hahvid, she’ll sound like a genius, definitely ahead of her time.

latest results on the news.aol.com internet poll:
Obama 46%
Palin 41%
Neither 13%
338,000 votes cast
Commnentary:
1) although an internet poll I think any objective observer would agree ‘that is a hell of a lot of folks to sample’.
2)After 59 days on the job, being in the news everyday, with the MSM in the tank for Obama speaking glowingly in 98% of the coverage of him, regarded as the messiah, and his socialist agenda not vigorously publicly opposed by the GOP leadership in Congress, Obama is only able to muster 46% of the vote.
3)In contrast Sarah Palin, out of the world of national politics for the last 3 and 1/2 months since the Chambliss Seante runoff, is able to register 41% of the vote (it was only a 3 point gap with just over 200,000 votes cast)
4)Both figures are remarkable but I believe that if Obama could only muster 46% of the vote against Palin in the honeymoon phase of his Presidency I believe Sarah Palin has the capability of narrowing that gap after she becomes active again on the national stage.
5)Those who have recently staked their fortunes on Sarah Palin have been rewarded from the results of this poll; this is further evidence of the emergence of SarahPAC as a popular or major destination for the disposable income of many from the Republican base. Sarah’s position of rejecting a sizeable chunk of the stimulus dollars designated for Alaska will only help her standing in the public.

Well, if you’re any indication, giving money to education would be a massive waste of funds.

The news.aol.com poll is still on. Please go over there and vote for Sarah.

Good, she has shown she is only 31 percent prostitute instead of 100 percent prostitute.

Obviously that statement is based on personal experience.

And here, visual evidence of the gap in reasoning ability between higher primates and monke(i)s (sic).

Me, too! Can’t stand those ‘Plastic Iveys!’
The Feds should have no problem with each and every Governor taking their bit line by line and finding savings since noone in Washington had the ‘time’ (translation guts and grits), to. What SP has done should be standard.

Um, AP, I think you have your numbers wrong. Pretty much all the news reports say that this fraud–who pretended she was against the stimulus, just as she pretended she was against the bridge to nowhere–is accepting 69% of the $930 million for Alaska. Not sure what kind of fuzzy math your calculator does, but that means she’s accepting $641.7 million and only rejecting only $288.3 million, only about half of what you claim she’s rejecting.

Actually, AllahP got the numbers completely wrong. And she’s 69% prostitute. The 31% is what she rejected. She’s accepting about $642 million and rejecting only about $288 million.

Allah:
Your headline is completely incorrect. Even if you believe Sarah Palin’s lying press release, which apparently you do since you linked it above as fact, she announced that she ACCEPTED, not rejected $514 million. Time for you to get reading glasses. The other reports show that she actually accepted $642 million, not the lower figure she claims. Please correct this, as your headline and your entry gets this completely wrong.
