Video: Palin announces she’ll reject $515 million of stimulus money; Update: Actually, $288 million

posted at 7:50 pm on March 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

Excellent. She’s up for re-election next year and this move won’t do her any favors inside the state, so I can only assume it’s a sign that she’s keeping her options open for 2012.

“We will request federal stimulus funds for capital projects that will create new jobs and expand the economy,” Governor Palin said. “We won’t be bound by federal strings in exchange for dollars, nor will we dig ourselves a deeper hole in two years when these federal funds are gone. For instance, in order to accept what look like attractive energy funds, our local communities would be required to adopt uniform building codes. Government would then be required to police those codes. These types of funds are not sensible for Alaska.”…

“Our desire is to foster a discussion about what is true stimulus and what is just more federal interference in Alaskans’ lives through the growth of government,” Governor Palin said. “We think stimulus items devoted to government agency growth and program expansion ought to be examined in light of the funding needs already being addressed with our pending budget requests.”

Follow the link up top for the full press release or click the image and scroll down for video of her presser. According to the ADN, the biggest chunk of the money that she’s turning down would go to education, so look out for a “Palin hates children” story on “Countdown” tonight or tomorrow. She also promised to work with the legislature if they decide they want to invoke the stimulus’s “Sanford Amendment” and accept the money. Exit question: Er, is the “Sanford Amendment” constitutional? Survey says: No.

Update: My bad: Debbie Schlussel e-mails to note that Palin actually rejected $288 million, not $515 million. Overall, that means she’ll accept 69% of the funds. Sorry for the error.

Update: Why did Palin initially say she was rejecting roughly half the funds when the actual number’s just north of 30%? The ADN explains:

Palin first told the news media that she’s turning down nearly half the federal stimulus money — but later conceded that does not count the Medicaid money she is accepting. That brings down what she’s refusing to 31 percent of what the state government could get. Local governments and nonprofits could still compete for stimulus grants.

Total pwnage of Sanford and Jindal with this move. More importantly, it’s the right action to take. No reason to get saddled with even more debt in the future, when states can’t even handle the current spending levels. It would mean tax increases in the future to pay for expanded government programs.

“We are not accepting funds, intended though, to just grow government.”

She’s up for re-election next year and this move won’t do her any favors inside the state, so I can only assume it’s a sign that she’s keeping her options open for 2012.

I am sure she is keeping her options open for 12 but I am not sure she is hurting herself within her state. It seems to me that Alaskans have taken issue with all the restrictions the Federal government places on their resource development in exchange for statehood. Rejecting Federal stimulus dollars that place further restrictions on Alaskans might indeed be a wise and popular choice.

How can these idiots in the Frum, Brooks, Noonan, Megan Freeegin McCain camp not take this woman seriously?? She is the ONLY politcian with the balls and the smarts to lead this nation right now.

I don’t care what the other “B” team GOvs have rejected or not, or said about this stimulus crap, Sarah was THE FIRST one to come out in opposition and to cleaarly articulate her positions why. Meanwhile, Jindal, Sanford, and the other B teamers were just, as Obama would say, “just words, just speeches” and just appearing on every talk show while she was actually reading the bill, carefully forward funding education, cuttting the her state budget, and working to only accept the minimun in this package,l which was for true stimulus, infrastructure and national security. I’m sorry, there is NO comparision and anyone who doesn’t see that is ignorant.

I’m getting ready to watch this preseer, but I already know what it will show, a strong woman with true leadership abilities who does what she says and says what she means.

“It’s a sign she’s keeping her options open for 2012.”

Thanks AP for starting to come around after saying she would not run in 2012 yesterday. I am fairly certain she will run and mop the floor with the rest of the GOP B team. And with the way Mr. Teleprompter is floundering, if he keeps it up it won’t be close in the general.

I’m watching the preseer just to back up my claims then heading over to SarahPAC fill the coffers some more.

For instance, in order to accept what look like attractive energy funds, our local communities would be required to adopt uniform building codes. Government would then be required to police those codes. These types of funds are not sensible for Alaska.

OK, I’m on Palin’s side on this issue. However, can someone elaborate how it is impossible to adhere to these new building codes for two years, and then when the money run out revert to the old ones?

radiofreevillage on March 19, 2009 at 8:02 PM

Complying with new building codes means that the owner has to modify their house or building to meet the code. That means buying materials and paying contractors, plus inspection fees for the visit by the building inspector.

Then the underlying building code would expire. For lots of issues, it would make more sense to pay a fine, or litigate until the law goes away. This is a very unproductive exercise.

Who would want the building inspector jobs that go away, after a couple years of harassing people for no benefit?

Palin would also get the blame for intruding in people’s lives to set up the uniform building code (temporary) regulations.

In Chicago, where they have “the best building code that money can buy”, this may make political sense. In Alaska, I believe it would be a real non-starter.

Clyde5445 on March 19, 2009 at 8:49 PM

Yes, Palin was the very first Governor to publicly articulate this strategy – in early January. Other Governors copied her and gave her no credit. Then, while other governors were running off half-cocked with press releases and TV appearances, she was actually studying the bill and analyzing its impact – not going public until she was sure about the specific actions she wanted to take, and the legislative strategy she wanted to follow.

The woman is scary smart.

This is a very smart response. Taking what she believes will help stimulate the local economy, and rejecting what she feels will burden the State with more regulatory expenses in the out years, requiring increased State taxes that will adversely impact the local economy.

If only more governors would take this approach, these “stimulus bills” would end up being about the right size and have both faster and long-term beneficial impacts.

Alaska legislators were in Washington, D.C. for the Energy Council meeting. Palin went on record at the time that if she were Obama, she would veto the bill as originally proposed (even before that meeting. )

It seems like her priorities were deciding which earmarks she would request and how necessary this stimulus was. I think this demonstrates that Palin is prudent and thoughtful, someone who takes her time making decisions.

njpat on March 19, 2009 at 9:27 PM

This needs to be clearly stated … Sarah Palin was THE FIRST Governor to talk about rejecting the stimulus.

It is true that the Republican Governors of SC, MS, LA, and AL did actually announce FIRST that they would … in fact … turn it down.

However … it’s clear the Governors of those States are in “collusion” – they’re all turning down the same stuff.

Palin is going her own “maverick” route here. She waited off to announce it – because she’s bringing her State Legislature into the fold on this smackdown (or trying too).

And she is trying to turn down A LOT MORE MONEY than the other governors are.

Basically – and God, I love ‘em – but Sanford, Barber, Jindal, et al – they’re using a safety net here – and not performing a trick too complicated.

Palin has no safety net and her trick is a lot more complicated.

Allahpundit on March 19, 2009 at 8:28 PM

Oh good, you are here, maybe you can answer my question.

Do you have any idea how much Governor Sanford plans on rejecting?

No one seems to be able to answer that question. Not even Sanford. Any idea if he will reject education funds, infrastructure funds, health care, medicare or anything in particular?

Since Sanford has refused to answer these questions, perhaps you can.

Well, I figure Sanford cannot possible reject the unemployment funds. After all, his unemployment coffers are so low that he actually had to go out on Jan. 1st and beg the federal government to give him some money or the unemployment checks would not go out. Plus Sanford has the second highest unemployment rate in the nation. Good golly, even California has a better unemployment rate than his state does.

Of course, Sanford did attempt to take $700 million in stimulus funds just to pay down the state’s massive debt, but that did not work. The White House rejected his request.

So I am trying to figure out, what exactly did Sanford turn down?

Not that it matters much, but how in the hell is Romney winning the GOP vote over there? But, Palin is only within 3 of Messiah. I guess that is a reflection of how bad he’s doing. And since there is no question Palin beats those other GOP wannabees in real life, I guess the poll is good, but sheeesh, Romney and Huckster??!!!

davek70 on March 19, 2009 at 9:39 PM

How will it not do her any favors within the state? Aren’t Alaskans just as outraged at this March to Socialism as other Americans? This is wonderful news.

ashleymatt on March 19, 2009 at 9:39 PM

I find it inspiring that Gov Palin has thrown down the gauntlet. With this brilliant move she has said “put up or shut up” to all the wannabe’s. She has also laid this stimulus money at the feet of the Alaskan senate/congress to go through and on record justify all of these programs they want. She will hold their feet to the fire and make sure they get famous. She’s got moxy, and you can’t put moxy into a teleprompter.

portlandon on March 19, 2009 at 9:40 PM

LOL she calls it “the bait.” I love it!

ashleymatt on March 19, 2009 at 9:40 PM

She’s itching for the fight. Gird your loins!

chunderroad on March 19, 2009 at 8:25 PM

Girded !

Amadeus on March 19, 2009 at 8:36 PM

Please guys. You can’t talk about loins, or even “girding” when speaking about the Cuda. Makes me sweat–I feel like Radar O’Reilly. (Slaking.)

But seriously–does she seem like a dope to you?

“Our desire is to foster a discussion about what is true stimulus and what is just more federal interference in Alaskans’ lives through the growth of government,” Governor Palin said. “We think stimulus items devoted to government agency growth and program expansion ought to be examined in light of the funding needs already being addressed with our pending budget requests.”

Yeah, reaalll dopey. You would have lost all the Democrats with the phrase “true stimulus,” which they couldn’t separate from “appropriations” with a freakin crow-bar.

smellthecoffee on March 19, 2009 at 9:41 PM

hahah according to jake tapper obama may have stumbled BIG time on Jay Leno. When he was talking about his bowling skills Barry said “It is like special olympics or something” he said. haha he cant talk without his teleprompter.

ousoonerfan15 on March 19, 2009 at 9:42 PM

Because the 45 percent who voted for Obama went over and voted for Romney in the other poll. Do you think the average Teleprompter worshipper wants a head to head with Palin?

portlandon on March 19, 2009 at 9:42 PM

Ladies and gentlemen, behold the next President of the United States.

I fecking LOVE this woman!

NoLeftTurn on March 19, 2009 at 9:43 PM

Not much of a leader following the other gop candidates.

Whether she’s the first to do this or not is irrelevent. Only one person can be first. She’s doing the right thing.
This increases her already high stock among conservatives.
Go Sarah!

I’m going to be PISSED if Palin doesn’t run in 2010.

She’s like Golda Meir…only…well, you know……younger

The Romney poll is troll-contaminated; notice 29% for someone else; who would that be? How could voters only favor Palin at 13% while she is only 3 points behind Obama.

On the Obama-Palin matchup the trolls can’t affect those results. That’s why they are accurate.

technopeasant on March 19, 2009 at 9:47 PM

OH SNAP.

Thank you so much for posting this!

Good point. Didn’t think of it that way. Obama trolls voting for Romney, kind of like the Huckster idiots voted for McCain to squeeze Romney out of the nomination last year.
