Video: Palin announces she’ll reject $515 million of stimulus money; Update: Actually, $288 million

posted at 7:50 pm on March 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

Excellent. She’s up for re-election next year and this move won’t do her any favors inside the state, so I can only assume it’s a sign that she’s keeping her options open for 2012.

“We will request federal stimulus funds for capital projects that will create new jobs and expand the economy,” Governor Palin said. “We won’t be bound by federal strings in exchange for dollars, nor will we dig ourselves a deeper hole in two years when these federal funds are gone. For instance, in order to accept what look like attractive energy funds, our local communities would be required to adopt uniform building codes. Government would then be required to police those codes. These types of funds are not sensible for Alaska.”…

“Our desire is to foster a discussion about what is true stimulus and what is just more federal interference in Alaskans’ lives through the growth of government,” Governor Palin said. “We think stimulus items devoted to government agency growth and program expansion ought to be examined in light of the funding needs already being addressed with our pending budget requests.”

Follow the link up top for the full press release or click the image and scroll down for video of her presser. According to the ADN, the biggest chunk of the money that she’s turning down would go to education, so look out for a “Palin hates children” story on “Countdown” tonight or tomorrow. She also promised to work with the legislature if they decide they want to invoke the stimulus’s “Sanford Amendment” and accept the money. Exit question: Er, is the “Sanford Amendment” constitutional? Survey says: No.

Update: My bad: Debbie Schlussel e-mails to note that Palin actually rejected $288 million, not $515 million. Overall, that means she’ll accept 69% of the funds. Sorry for the error.

Update: Why did Palin initially say she was rejecting roughly half the funds when the actual number’s just north of 30%? The ADN explains:

Palin first told the news media that she’s turning down nearly half the federal stimulus money — but later conceded that does not count the Medicaid money she is accepting. That brings down what she’s refusing to 31 percent of what the state government could get. Local governments and nonprofits could still compete for stimulus grants.

there are a lot of strings attached to this “free money”. It would not surprise that if for every dollar in “free” money more then a dollar in extra expense will be foisted on the state and on business there.

This is a very smart response. Taking what she believes will help stimulate the local economy, and rejecting what she feels will burden the State with more regulatory expenses in the out years, requiring increased State taxes that will adversely impact the local economy.

If only more governors would take this approach, these “stimulus bills” would end up being about the right size and have both faster and long-term beneficial impacts.

For instance, in order to accept what look like attractive energy funds, our local communities would be required to adopt uniform building codes. Government would then be required to police those codes. These types of funds are not sensible for Alaska.

OK, I’m on Palin’s side on this issue. However, can someone elaborate how it is impossible to adhere to these new building codes for two years, and then when the money run out revert to the old ones?

She’s up for re-election next year and this move won’t do her any favors inside the state, so I can only assume it’s a sign that she’s keeping her options open for 2012.

Contrast this with her past modus operandi. It’s called integrity.

That is an assumption. She could just be doing what she thinks it right.

Spirit of 1776 on March 19, 2009 at 7:54 PM

That’s what I think.

I love quoting this from October. McLaughlin looks more and more prescient:

In Part I of this series on the “Integrity Gap” between the two national tickets, I looked at Governor Sarah Palin’s record of integrity in public office – her battles against corruption and wasteful spending, even by the powers controlling her own party in her home state of Alaska – even when she was putting her career at risk. As I explained, integrity is not just about honesty – it’s also about one of the crucial presidential character traits, toughness. Palin has proven that she doesn’t back down no matter who she has to take on.

In Part II, I will look at Senator Barack Obama, who is easily contrasted to Palin because they have careers of similar length in both local and statewide office, in states controlled largely by their own party. I have previously explained here why Obama lacks every kind of experience that we usually rely upon to test the character of potential presidents and teach them the lessons they will need to govern, and I’ve explained here why the flurry of flip-flops at the outset of his general election campaign raises questions specifically about his toughness, his principles and his convictions. During the recent financial crisis we got a taste of Obama’s leadership style in crisis: do nothing and hope he can shift the blame to somebody else.

INC on March 19, 2009 at 8:22 PM

Remember that poll from yesterday, with Palin losing to Obama by 20 points? Here is an interesting little detail.

Among independents: Obama 46% – Palin 42%

Obama only holds a 4 point lead among independents. The very demographic that put him in the White House. 4 years out…

doug1981 on March 19, 2009 at 8:23 PM

Having lived in Alaska and appreciated the Libertarian streak of it’s residents, I think this will help her in re-election rather than hurt.

The Opinionator on March 19, 2009 at 8:19 PM

Yeah, the latest Alaska polls show high popularity despite the nonstop smears. She has no credible 2010 opponents – the one guy with name recognition, Tasergate architect Hollis French, was just busted for campaign finance violations.

She could spend the time between now and 2010 hunting Eskimos from helicopters and still get re-elected.

The furor over the White House’s handling of AIG is likely to increase as we learn more. What about the bailout money to AIG that has been regifted to counterparties overseas? Is it possible that U.S. taxpayers will be, in effect, paying the bonuses of European bank executives? How would that go over with Johnny Isakson’s constituents? Or Chris Dodd’s?

AIG means big trouble for Obama’s big agenda. Does he understand that?

OH SNAP.

Allahpundit on March 19, 2009 at 8:28 PM

I had lunch yesterday with Senator Johnny Isakson, from Georgia, who said that his office is seeing an unprecedented level of voter outrage. The only thing close was the outcry over immigration reform, but that came largely from one side of the political spectrum. This is everybody.

Voters are looking for someone to blame. At the town hall last night, Obama seemed to accept responsibility. “I’ll take responsibility,” he said. “I’m the president.” It was enough for some in the media to give him credit for stepping up. But it was phony. The very next sentence out of his mouth: “We didn’t draft these contracts.” And later he added: “My job is to make sure we fix these messes, even if I don’t make them.”

But the bonuses are almost entirely a mess of his own making. Dodd says that someone from Treasury inserted the language that would protect the bonuses. And, of course, had Obama not fast-tracked the stimulus bill — insisting on a vote before it was even possible to read it — perhaps more members of Congress would have raised questions about that odd provision. With just three exceptions, Republicans voted as a bloc against the stimulus and complained loudly — remember John Boehner slamming the bill on the floor? — that they hadn’t had time to read it.
- Stephen Hayes

Sarah would be explaining program cuts in 2012 when the stimulus money runs out, while the federal government gets all the credit for expanding the programs.

Allahpundit is unsophisticated and gullible for not recognizing this reality. Even Huckabee commented in his program (last weekend) on this feature of how a sitting governor is motivated to reject federal money: the congressman gets all the credit announcing new money, and the governor gets all the abuse down the road when the money is no longer available.

Get a clue, AP.
