Video: Palin announces she’ll reject $515 million of stimulus money; Update: Actually, $288 million

Excellent. She’s up for re-election next year and this move won’t do her any favors inside the state, so I can only assume it’s a sign that she’s keeping her options open for 2012.

“We will request federal stimulus funds for capital projects that will create new jobs and expand the economy,” Governor Palin said. “We won’t be bound by federal strings in exchange for dollars, nor will we dig ourselves a deeper hole in two years when these federal funds are gone. For instance, in order to accept what look like attractive energy funds, our local communities would be required to adopt uniform building codes. Government would then be required to police those codes. These types of funds are not sensible for Alaska.”…

“Our desire is to foster a discussion about what is true stimulus and what is just more federal interference in Alaskans’ lives through the growth of government,” Governor Palin said. “We think stimulus items devoted to government agency growth and program expansion ought to be examined in light of the funding needs already being addressed with our pending budget requests.”

Follow the link up top for the full press release or click the image and scroll down for video of her presser. According to the ADN, the biggest chunk of the money that she’s turning down would go to education, so look out for a “Palin hates children” story on “Countdown” tonight or tomorrow. She also promised to work with the legislature if they decide they want to invoke the stimulus’s “Sanford Amendment” and accept the money. Exit question: Er, is the “Sanford Amendment” constitutional? Survey says: No.

Update: My bad: Debbie Schlussel e-mails to note that Palin actually rejected $288 million, not $515 million. Overall, that means she’ll accept 69% of the funds. Sorry for the error.

Update: Why did Palin initially say she was rejecting roughly half the funds when the actual number’s just north of 30%? The ADN explains:

Palin first told the news media that she’s turning down nearly half the federal stimulus money — but later conceded that does not count the Medicaid money she is accepting. That brings down what she’s refusing to 31 percent of what the state government could get. Local governments and nonprofits could still compete for stimulus grants.

Yes, someone who names her first kid after what she runs on is simply brilliant and the person that we need for sure in the Oval Office. I made fun of the idiot who named her special needs kid Van Palin. Yup, unbelievable of me. If Barack Obama had named his kids 2 Live Crew and Treadmill, I’m sure no conservative would ever say a word.

I did read it, and even the Sarahmessiah’s lying press release admits she is ACCEPTING–not rejecting as allahp is claiming–$515 million. She’s no conservative. She’s a fraud. And despite the fact that you blind followers refuse to wake up, she will never be President. Um, please read Allahpundit’s update above. And please re-read your heroine Palinmessiah’s press release. She and Allahp disagree with your weird interpretation of her straight admission she took $515 million, not rejected it, and for the record, AllahPundit–who told me in an e-mail that no-one cares about accuracy on this but me, which is interesting coming from someone who constantly criticizes the MSM for getting things wrong–still gets it wrong. Palin claims and admits in the press release that she accepted $515 million or 55%, but the rest of the media looked closer and it’s actually $642 million or 69% that she’s accepting. That’s where your Medicaid distinction might come in.

Even if she did piss on Tasha Richardson’s grave, for which she will get her reward in hell.

From Sarah Palin’s own lying press release:

Governor Palin is accepting just 55 percent of the available stimulus funds, all for capital projects. . . .

Preliminary estimates for federal economic stimulus funds to Alaska state agencies are approximately $930.7 million. Of that total, the state requested allocations for transportation and aviation projects in February estimated at $262.6 million, although more was requested in contingency and other funds. With the additional $251.5 million in economic stimulus funds requested today, the proposed total capital spending is $514.1 million, or 55 percent of the state’s estimated allocation.

Reading is not your friend, since you refuse to do it.

Debbie Schlussel on March 20, 2009 at 12:32 PM

Ok,

So with these numbers:

Jindal rejects 3% of the Stimulus Money
Perry rejects 5% of the Stimulus Money

Palin rejects 30% of the Stimulus Money

Sarah’s 10x more of a fiscal conservative than Bobby Jindal.

…that this fraud–…

Debbie Schlussel on March 20, 2009 at 11:47 AM

Typical…do you think she is really a fraud? Or are you just upset that a beautiful women can command so much respect…jealousy eats at you.

And ABC’s Jake Tapper reported on his blog that Alaska Democrats once credited Palin for stopping the bridge. During the 2006 election, they wrote: “Gov. Palin recently cancelled the Gravina Island Bridge near Ketchikan that would have connected the Alaska mainland with
Gravina Island (population: 50).”

She diverted the funds to more appropriate road building…even Stevens said she was never really behind the building of the bridge, but was behind accepting money to be diverted.
You charade is tiresome…I used to respect you, but you have really been derailed by your name calling.
Her initial statement did not include Medicaid money, as she was clearly speaking about “infrastructure”, you didn’t hear the words “infrastructure”.
So the intial figures are correct, and yours are almost correct…$930.7 million, rejecting $288 million. 31% is what she is rejecting.
The most important part…that you left out.
She said all this will be debated openly, by the peoples representatives…
Now please…relax, when you look in your mirrors you can tell yourself you are still beautiful and people still love you…

Ya know, you don’t have to be an accountant to know AP (or his staff) have a mathematics deficiency. I’m only a lowly retired engineer, but I have had the math. Based on $515M offered and $288M rejected, that leaves $227 accepted. that is a 56% rejection or 44% acceptance. Where does that translate into: Update 1 – 69% accept and Update 2 – just north of 30% reject?

I really do like you AP, but when you get involved with anything on the subject of Sarah Palin, you revert to New York Times journalism.

Reading is not your friend, since you refuse to do it.

Debbie Schlussel on March 20, 2009 at 12:32 PM

We also read the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner:

She expected to file an appropriations bill this afternoon accepting about $251.5 million in stimulus funds, coupled with allocations of $262.6 million already requested for transportation and aviation projects for a total state take of about $514.1 million.

And KTVA:

Governor Sarah Palin announced that she is proposing a bill that will allow the state to accept only 55-percent of federal recovery funds. Palin gave several examples that underlined her reasoning for wanting to reject the funds. In total, if the bill were passed, $515-million of the almost $1-billion would be rejected by the state.

Since you’re attacking Palin’s supporters, and this item was originally linked from C4P, I will include their comments.

The ADN is reporting that Gov. Palin rejected 30% of the stimulus money. She claims to be accepting only 55%. So where’s the missing 15%? The discrepancy is over the Medicaid funding. Palin already accepted that and doesn’t consider it part of the stimulus funding; hence, her figure of accepting only 55%.

Here is a breakdown of the Palin administration’s stimulus requests.

And see here for further information.

Also, here’s Gov. Palin’s letter to state lawmakers regarding her decision on the stimulus.

chunderroad on March 20, 2009 at 12:56 PM

If Sarah Palin is a prostitute then Barack Obama is a pimp. While Sarah sells herself to the ‘johns’ of Alaska and their wives and children by working 18 hour day on their behalf, Obama lives off the avails of AIG, Fannie Mae-Freddie MAC and ACORN and millions of male and female prostitutes who have sold themselves out in name of Obama’s socialist agenda and have been seduced by the drug of Messianic illusion of a beckoning nirvana devoid of greed and capitalist pigs.

Every time he sells out our country, he does it at the expense of his dignity, any potential civil rights victory and the Office with which he was charged by the American people.

Interesting, just reported about the education funds.

“Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell showed up to deliver Palin’s message – that she’s not necessarily “rejecting” the money, but wants a public debate on how it’s spent and whether it would cost the state in the long run.”

Also reported today, her Office of Budget and Management sent out an email to all state agencies to go ahead with requests for all stimulus funds. She wouldn’t be playing politics would she?

Actually, AllahP got the numbers completely wrong. And she’s 69% prostitute. The 31% is what she rejected. She’s accepting about $642 million and rejecting only about $288 million.

Ah well, maybe the earlier figures will become gospel as much as “she’s a book-burning religious kook” did.

Oh! Then she DOES love the children! LOL Why wouldn’t she play politics with it? The whole stimulus is a Democrat party “gotcha”.

Heh Heh, TOAC. Thanks for the link! See ya around, Debs.

Palin said she would speak with the Legislature on which projects were viable and which were not. That way, nobody can accuse her of using her bully pulpit to turn down “necessary” in an act of political grandstanding.

It’s a shrewd political move, maybe. Now we’re finding out that as late as Wednesday Palin let legislators and school officials believe she would be accepting the educational and other funds. She changed her position only after pressure from her SarahPac advisers. It allows her to claim she refused stimulus funds while passing the buck to the legislature. Some pretty nifty political positioning I’ll grant you but not exactly what you would call asserting leadership nor does it tell us anything about her real views, assuming she has any, on the stimulus act.

lowandslow on March 20, 2009 at 11:28 PM

Was Medicare money the government was already spending included in the stimulus?

Debbie; I never criticize a Mom for what she names her child. She carried that baby not you. Besides I like the Palin names. Bristol, Willow, and Piper are lovely names. You never heard of Piper Laurie? What is wrong with Trak and Trigg? At least there won’t be 4 or 5 kids named that in their classes at school.

Any name (or word) sounds strange the first time you hear it. If it has connotations such as Rotunda Chandelier (which someone actually named their child after Kennedy’s assassination) then obviously the child is going to be embarrassed later on.

But to make fun of a name simply because you don’t like the mother. That is overreaching.

First Obots, NOW PALINBOTS! I do not like these names Palin gave her children. Just give me Mary and Joseph for my children.

I heard that she rejected some of the funds and offered to steer them to you for make-up.

And that name “Debbie” … that is a weirdo name … your family must be weird too

joey24007 on March 20, 2009 at 12:01 PM

AND YOUR POINT IS….?

And another thing Joey, YOU NEED SOME MEDICINE AND LEAVE DEB ALONE! OR DO YOU WANT ME TO TALK SMACK ABOUT YOUR FAMILY?

You know on this site I have been seeing a lot of neo-con talk (with Debbie being the only exception I know of). It’s thoughts like those from the neo-cons or FAUXCONS as I call them that make me wonder what I am in terms of conservatism. And in case any of you need to vet me, I am registered NO AFFILIATION in my town, which in essence makes me independent. Even voted Libertarian in the race that knocked Chris Shays out and gave us ultra-left radical Jim Himes.
