Video: DeMint calls on Geithner to resign, Geithner admits he contacted Dodd; Update: Harry Truman, call your office!

posted at 6:20 pm on March 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Are they crazy? Don’t Jim DeMint and Johnny Isakson know that Tim Geithner is the only one working at Treasury? Well, I guess the problem is defining the word “working”, after the AIG debacle blew up in the faces of Geithner and Barack Obama, thanks to Chris Dodd singing like a canary yesterday.  DeMint and Isakson publicly called for Geithner’s head:

Sen. Johnny Isakson suggested Thursday that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner should resign because of his tarnished credibility, which he believes is hurting the Obama administration’s ability to respond to the economic crisis.

Isakson is one of a growing number of Republicans — along with a few Democrats — who have sharply criticized Geithner in the wake of the AIG bonus fiasco.

“I think his credibility has been hurt to the point where he’s not going to be effective, and if I were him I would” resign, Isakson told POLITICO.

When asked about Geithner on Thursday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) didn’t offer a ringing endorsement but says the Treasury secretary needs time to perform: “I think the jury is out,” Feinstein said.

Not for long, though, and he can thank Chris Dodd for that.  After CNN caught Dodd in a lie over the change in the amendment that enabled the bonus payout, Dodd wasted no time ratting out Geithner and the Treasury as the real culprit.  After publicly stoking outrage over the bonuses, Democrats suddenly found themselves the target of public ire.

Geithner’s only been around for two months, but he’s done next to nothing so far — not even staffing his team.  It might be time to ready the understudy, as the Obama administration might need to toss someone under the bus to mend fences on Capitol Hill after this epic fail.  If Feinstein is offering support this tepidly, I’d say Geithner’s days are numbered.

Update: Geithner now admits that he pushed Dodd into changing the language of the bill:

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner confirmed Thursday that the department did talk to Sen. Chris Dodd about a clause he put forth in the stimulus legislation that would have strictly limited executive bonuses.

A loophole in the bill allowed bailed-out insurance giant American International Group to keep its bonuses.

The Treasury Department was concerned that legislation that would restrict contractual bonuses would not hold up to legal challenges, Geithner said in an interview with CNN’s Ali Velshi.

“We expressed concern about this specific version. We wanted to make sure it was strong enough to survive legal challenge,” Geithner said.

Well, if so, when will Obama stop “shaking with outrage”?  When will he accept responsibility for his own actions and that of his Treasury, rather than continue stoking public anger over the bonuses?  Oh, wait … it’s above his pay grade.  Hope and Change!

Update II: This administration’s unraveling like a cheap sweater.  Politico reports that Geithner wants to blame the whole thing on … staff:

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, taking his turn on CNN tonight, says not to blame Chris Dodd for the AIG bonus mess — but don’t blame him either.

The responsibility, he said, lies with “staff” — whoever that is. …

CNN’s ALI VELSHI: But inadvertently might somebody at Treasury have told Senator Dodd to do something that has now resulted in these payments not being  able to …

GEITHNER: No, again, what we did is just express concern about the vulnerability of a specific part of this provision, the legal challenge …  Treasury staff were working Senator Dodd’s staff throughout this process. Again, that’s part of the legislative process.

VELSHI: But you weren’t involved in that directly?

GEITHNER: I did have with other officials some conversations with Chairman Dodd as he was going through this process but other provisions.

VELSHI: So not about this particular one. It wasn’t you telling …

GEITHNER: No, but I’m not sure that’s relevant because Treasury staff did express concern about whether this provision was vulnerable to legal challenge.

As Harry Truman once said, “The buck stops at, er, … my staff.”

So, let us keep Geithner, because we need the entertainment.

However, the calls for him to resign are a part of the entertainment, being that it’s only been two months.

After that, all of the idiot messiah’s cabinet must resign, so that we can get some sane people to run the Executive branch (though, little chance if it’s restricted to dems, who are unable to run anything).

The US will not be able to stand much more of this stupidity.

It just gets better! From the Associated Press:

“WASHINGTON – Obama administration special envoy Richard Holbooke was on the American International Group Inc. board of directors in early 2008 when the insurance company locked in the bonuses now stoking national outrage. Holbrooke, a veteran diplomat who is now the administration’s point man on Pakistan and Afghanistan, served on the board between 2001 and mid-2008.”

Of course, he knew nothing about the bonuses – it’s estimated AIG paid him $800,000 while he was on the board.

Honestly I hope the GOP wont let this die. There is no logical explanation that says that B.O. didnt know about these bonuses, or about his treasury secretary’s involvement in inserting them into the TARP bills.

I’m comforted that this total exposure of our political class as bought and sold many times over by Wall Street is coming at a time when the GOP has absolutely NOTHING it can coherently say in opposition. Half the GOP is out there defending AIG bonuses (and by proxy putting themselves in league with Geithner) the other half like Cantor are echoing populist outrage and their solution is either to vote with the Dem Tax AIG bill OR to propose a bill where Geithner is empowered to get the AIG bonus money back, again, siding with the Administration. The result is that EVERYONE comes out of this looking bad. Meanwhile, Obama’s poll numbers haven’t taken a hit as of today…which surprises me.

He’s the kind of demented politician who would eventually throw himself under the bus and speak of himself in the third person, critically. And our dopey media and his zomblies would fall for it.

So long as they keep screwing up, they can’t advance their agenda. They are learning what Slappy Alinsky never taught them (because he didn’t know) that not all crises are created equal. Some crises are genuine fubars and are not opportunities for getting much done. Obama and his Clinton Clones excel at these types of crises.

Geithner is one of the primary people who orchestrated the AIG bailout/Tarp.

Dems use this to show how important Geithner is and make him Treasury Secretary.

Dems shut Republicans out on crafting their spending bills.

They strip out a revision by one of the 3 Republicans that voted for it to tax these bonuses heavily.

Dodd and Geithner put in revisions that make sure AIG get their bonuses in the bill that Obama touts to the nation is
proof that they are smarter and going to save the day.

Wintrob, 51, will get the “retention” payment in two installments, the first in April 2009 and the rest a year later, New York-based AIG said today in a regulatory filing. The firm previously disclosed the program in a Sept. 26 filing and said today that Wintrob and Chief Financial Officer David Herzog elected to get the payments four months later than planned.

Geithner goes before the Nation to announce his economic plan and he falls flat. The market drops over 400 points after this pathetic showing of gross ineptitude.

AIG bonuses are publicized causing a major public outcry.

Senator Dodd tries to look invisible.

Democrats get together and blame Bush as usual.

Senator Dodd’s provision to insure that the bonuses are paid is revealed and he says that he did not put it there.
He does not know how it got there.

Dodd is slamed with so much proof to the contrary he has to admit he lied and says he did put it there, but it was the Treasury that made him do it.

Geithner then has to admit he did make Dodd change his revision, showing that he lied when he stated that only a week ago is when he learned of it.

Obama’s spending bill is where this was put through.
Obama’s administration is 100% responsible for this bill that Obama claims is proof of how smart and able they are in handling the nations business.

Republicans were shut out of every phase involved in crafting and creating this bill.

Now the super smart democrats with their leader Obama, who is so smart, honest, transparent, accountable, and full of change say that all of this lies at the feet of the “Treasury staff”.

So if and when the economy gets better, these bills by the Obama administration are going to be heralded as the great policies put forth by the incredible Obama and the democrats.

But if they instead are riddled with failure, well then it is the pee ons in their staff that are really in charge and to blame.

Barnum & Baily could not have put together a bigger group of stupid a$$ clowns as the Obama administration is turning out to be.

KARL ROVE YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARD!!!!!

These guys give amateurs a bad name… At least an amateur would be hustling…

We have hundreds of billions of dollars at risk and they’re worried about paying a few million dollars to the people who might be able prevent the collapse of the worlds financial system…

Penny-wise… Pound foolish…

Exactly why the federal government should do nothing except field the armed forces…

And so it goes… Day 59 of Barry’s War on Prosperity

Ed,

a reminder.

Geithner didn’t just show up on Jan 20 to his office. He was the President of the NY Federal Reserve Bank. He put together the AIG bailout and was responsible for oversight from Sept 08 to Jan 09. He had a full staff there at the Fed

Obama struggles as communicator

Mixed messages

Obama’s message on the economy has been as volatile as the stock market itself. When he needed public support for his stimulus plan, he spoke in stark and gloomy terms.

So once the stimulus passed — and criticism of his bummer message mounted — he shifted to a more optimistic take on the economy, at one point encouraging people to consider hopping back into the market. That was seen as too bright.

YOU DON’T SAY????????
How could this be.
I mean Obama is like Jesus to the hollywood crowd and his followers say he is going to “Change the World!!!!”.

Look at this example of strong, decisive leadership coming from “the greatest administration since FDR,Lincoln, and JFK
all rolled into one:

Hello……Hello…….Hello,
is there anybody in there.
Just nod if you can hear me,
is there anyone at all???????????????????????

During the fall campaign, Obama relentlessly criticized his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain, for declaring, “The fundamentals of our economy are strong.” Obama’s team painted the veteran senator as out of touch and failing to grasp the challenges facing the country.
(At the time McCain made this statement, the Dow was over 11,000 and unemployment was a little over 5%.
When the Obama administration made their statement, the Dow was around 6,800 and unemployment was around 9%)

This is a liberals idea of doing things “smarter” and showing great leadership.

“Yes We Can” look like total idiots.

This was when Bush was President:

Obama’s trillions dwarf Bush’s ‘dangerous’ spending

By Byron York
Chief political correspondent 2/24/09
http://www.dcexaminer.com/politics/Obamas-trillions-dwarf-Bushs-dangerous-spending.html

Pelosi and Reid called Bush’s budgets “dangerous” and “unpatriotic,” but with Obama, they’ve changed their tune

Back in 2006, when Democrats were hoping to win control of the House and Senate, party leaders worked themselves into a righteous outrage over the issue of out-of-control federal spending. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called the Republican budget “irresponsible” and “unpatriotic” because it increased the amount of U.S. debt held by foreign countries. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Republicans of going on “an unprecedented and dangerous borrowing spree” and declared GOP leadership “the most fiscally irresponsible in the history of our country … no other president or Congress even comes close.”

Now that the democrats are in control, deficits are “Great”:

White House Budget Director Orszag: “Elevated Deficits Are Beneficial”

“During an economic downturn like we’re experiencing the deficit gets elevated which is not only natural, it’s beneficial because it helps bring the economy back up to the potential output level. In other words, the key problem we face right now is the gap between how much the economy could produce and how much it is producing. The whole point of the Recovery Act is to fill in that gap and part of that means a temporary elevated deficit.”
Peter Orszag
White House Budget Director
February 26, 2009

I guess if liberals keep saying how “smart” they are, some suckers will believe it because it certainly does not show in their actions.

Baxter Greene on March 19, 2009 at 9:03 PM

FUBAR! That’s what this administration is. Imagine the damage he can do over the NEXT 60 days. The outrage should really be over how he just spent another trillion dollars while everyone was busy being outraged over AIG. Where is THIS trillion dollars going? And who’s going to be accountable for it? My guess? No one has read the bill and no one will be accountable.

Experience you can believe in!

No wonder Russia is rearming. They see the US as they were in 1991. They know they can rebuild, and the US won’t and can’t do anything to stop them. Obama is proving every day why all the other leaders of nations really wanted him to be President.

It’s the incompetence stupid!
