Scapegoating Edward Liddy

posted at 10:58 am on March 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Andrew Malcolm makes a good point regarding AIG chief Edward Liddy and his appearance yesterday on Capitol Hill.  Lawmakers from both parties took the opportunity to throw brickbats at Liddy for the executive retention bonuses paid by AIG last week, before it became clear that the Obama administration worked with Chris Dodd to enable the payouts.  Democrats apparently tipped off their allies in the fringe group Code Pink to lend the gladitorial-circus air necessary for a really good pillorying.

But Liddy didn’t create the bonuses or run AIG into the ground.  In fact, as Malcolm reminds us, Congress and Treasury begged Liddy to rescue AIG last September, and at the lowest possible salary:

Chances are good no one will ask Obama today about the T. G. words (Timothy Geithner). And if they do, the president can repeat his support of the embattled Treasury secretary who may or may not have screwed up on the AIG bonus issue and the president will quickly change the subject away from those petty partisan concerns and back to his own grand agenda for the nation’s good.

Who wants to witness Edward Liddy, who was summoned from retirement only in September as the federal financial paramedic of AIG for the outrageous annual salary of $1, bludgeoned mercilessly for the cameras by the overpowering, hyperbolic hypocrisy of congressmen and women who awarded themselves $4,700 raises in this winter of economic duress?  Those raises, making their annual salaries $174,000, will cost taxpayers an extra $2.5 million this year; call it “a bonus.”

Liddy inherited the contractual obligations of retention bonuses.  Moreover, as we have seen, the Obama administration knew all about them — and pushed Dodd to rewrite his amendment to enable the payouts.  Liddy could have refused to pay them, perhaps, but it certainly looks as though the Obama administration tacitly wanted the payouts to help retain what talent remained in the units that were getting eliminated.

A better question is why Liddy chooses to stay at AIG after this shameful episode.  While Congress and the administration secretly worked to allow the payments, Liddy gets blasted in Congress by the likes of Barney Frank, one of the chief authors of the economic collapse.  They hired Liddy to be a fall guy, a man they could use to generate populist outrage in order to distract people from the people who created the catastrophe — and they got him at the bargain rate of $1.

If I were Liddy, I’d tell them where to stick their dollar and go back to retirement.

Andrew has a lot more on the administration’s attempts to distract people from the incompetence in DC.  be sure to read the whole column.

I agree. He should have resigned in the middle of his testimony and gotten up and just walked out of Congress. That would have really put the focus where it belongs – on the moron Congresscritters sitting in the hearing with no witness to accuse of being a witch.

Since Congress passed the bill allowing the bonuses, and Obama signed it, why aren’t they subject to the 90% tax as well?

You do have to wonder how he would sit there and take cr*p from the people who had a bigger hand in creating the problem than he did.

While it’s easy to jump on those “evil” people getting the bonuses, you have to wonder how many are now looking for other jobs. It’s a legal thing, if he gets nothing, he could argue he was duped into working for nothing. But if he’s paid a buck, it clarifies that his compensation was explicitly discussed and defined, and he’s getting a buck.

Something like that.

jeff_from_mpls on March 19, 2009 at 11:17 AM

If I were Liddy, I’d tell them where to stick their dollar and go back to retirement.

Exactly.

I saw Liddy getting reamed by some Dem from Massachusetts who claimed to be a contract lawyer. The rep flogged Liddy as he was pointing out a bonus provision in one of AIGs standard bonus agreements. As I understood it, there were two types of bonuses under the agreement: performance and retention. The rep was crucifying Liddy about performance bonuses, not retention bonuses, even after Liddy had carefully explained that no AGI employee received a performance bonus.

You can discuss the wisdom and application of the retention bonuses, but Liddy took an awful lot of flack from an idiot who couldn’t read an agreement (you know, the contract lawyer congressman).

One thing I learned from the hearings is that the retention bonuses were an attempt to lock in people who were needed to unravel things for an AIG. I think we could discuss the need to keep the same people who’d screwed things up in the first instance. But I’m not sure people can express outrage at some AIGers leaving after receiving their retention bonuses. The agreement was to keep them from a point in time (early last year) until they’d wound down their particular projects. In some cases, these are still being undone; in other cases, the employees were finished, so they were entitled to the bonus because they’d stayed as long as they were required. Also, Liddy did say that there was some kind of AIG discretion in paying the bonuses. If the employee didn’t satisfactorily wrap things up, the employee wouldn’t get the bonus. I can’t say how vigorously that was applied, but keep in mind.

I’m no fan of these bonuses. Congress and the White House should have pressured them to back off on them in return for bail-out money. But ultimately, Liddy isn’t the bad guy, and it was disgraceful for these congressional tools to be flogging him. After all, Liddy’s cleaning up a mess that many of them helped to create.

On the other hand, I think how sad a life it must be, to awake each morning with the challenge of finding that perfect four word sentence that simultaneously denigrates the EVILBUSHHITLER and exalts your messiah. Fortunately for all of us it found its way around that little problem by just repeating the same tired idiocy every day. It is the human equivalent of the organ grinder monkey. Bishop on March 19, 2009 at 11:32 AM

Liddy is the only one acting like a grown up. Sadly, I don’t know if America is paying attention to this NOT-evil CEO. This must be the “new” politics we were told about.

littleguy on March 19, 2009 at 11:33 AM

I think Geithner and friends knew full well what they were doing when they replaced the former AIG CEO with Liddy three months ago. We have come to learn there are a lot of connections between Geithner, Paulson, Obama to AIG.

By inserting Liddy as the expert to right a sinking ship, and by his acceptance of the position for $1/year, it gives off the appearance of Liddy the good guy …. and Liddy the guy who came to clean up the mess, not the guy responsible for it. Liddy played that trump card throughout his inquisition yesterday.

Reminded me of Adam Sandler … “It wasn’t me!”

Well, if it wasn’t him, what the hell is keeping Congress from dragging in the former CEO, who was responsible for the retention contract? Common sense, no?

What we have here is total deflection from the Mother of All Bailouts. The acting is superb, by the accused and the accusers, all pretending they had no responsibility. My take is, Geithner wanted someone new at the helm for that very reason.

Want some answers? Subpoena the CEO who was in charge when these contract shenanigans were going on, not the untouchable appointed CEO who has plausible deniability.

What is his connection to Goldman Sachs? How intertwined is he with other interests that are receiving bailout bucks? Why is he such a staunch supporter of employee/employer contracts at this particular time, when he had no problem breaking them while at Allstate?

Are we really talking about retention bonuses, or is this hush money? This whole thing smells of corruption and greed!

The bank robbers left in a hurry. They left a bag of cash behind. They sent their hit men back to the scene of the crime to get the last bag of cash. That was to be their bonus. That was a pay-off – to keep their mouths shut.

That appears to me to be what is happening with the AIG bonuses. They are bribes. This should no longer be looked at as anything other than a criminal enterprise. These folks are thieves. Nothing more and nothing less.

Maybe I spoke too soon.

A DUer with some clarity.

Problem is that Congress and large parts of the new Administration are in it…

up to their eyeballs…

Expect faux outrage and a faux, unsuccessful attempt to get the money back.

At best, a small portion of the money will be “recovered”.

Posting this for a friend in Florida:

A COPY OF MY LETTER TO SENATOR NELSON and Senator Martinez

I found the hearing yesterday grilling the CEO of AIG to be disingenuous at best. You all knew that the bill was stuffed with unsupportable provisions, yet now you all deny knowledge. The outrage is misplaced. It falls on the shoulders of every member of Congress who denied debate on the bill.

By denying debate on the bill, you effectively shut down the voice of any opposition and denied millions of American voters a voice by denying the Republican senators the right to amend or even question any provisions in this massive takeover of America. We elect officials to voice our concerns–when debate is denied, our voices are nullified. If a bill is good, enough elected officials will vote for it–there was only one reason to deny debate and that was to ram through this onerous bill. You are all responsible.

The American people know who wrote this bill and all its provisions-Democrats. The bonuses to AIG are of no consequence. Every single lawmaker who denied debate is responsible.

How can you stand by and aid in the destruction of America? How can you vote for socialism time after time. All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing….

Never is my lifetime has the American public been forced, for love of liberty and the Constitution, to watch hourly the events in Congress. We cannot take our eyes off you for a minute because we cannot trust you. We cannot imagine what else is hidden in this bill and all the others that you are ramming through under the cover of darkness. This is evil. You all were voted into Congress to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution, but you are destroying it and bragging, “We won!” No, Senator Nelson, we all lose.

poplicola on March 19, 2009 at 11:52 AM

One thing that I have always found disheartening is that there is a misguided public perception that the fat cats on Wall St. have some allegiance to the Republican Party. That’s far from the truth and their contributory habits make that pretty clear. These jerks don’t have a politically loyal bone in their rotten bodies. They routinely buy and sell politicians of all persuasions, as needed.

We need a flow chart to show exactly who is connected to whom and how that influences the flow of money.

ernesto on March 19, 2009 at 11:49 AM

We were told exactly the same thing by Ogabe when the stimucrap bill arrived on our door, that a 1,000 page, trillion dollar payout packed solid with pork needed to be passed without review or we were all going to die.

If Ogabe and the dems didn’t get exactly what they wanted exactly when they wanted it, the nation would crumble and life in the galaxy would cease to exist.

though the comparison isnt exactly 1:1 i see your point. however, this would then mean that both groups…the overspending labor camp as well as the low tax low regulation wall street camp are playing petty vindictive games of chicken with our country’s well being.

ernesto on March 19, 2009 at 11:57 AM

All Liddy needs to do is talk about how he “inherited this mess”… seems to work for Obama… err, at least it used to work for Obama

gatorboy on March 19, 2009 at 11:59 AM

if certain businesses dont get EXACTLY the tax and regulatory environment they want they’ll ALL

(let me help you here) cease to make massive contributions to the democratic coffers and therefore need to get their billions via the porculus bill asap

LevStrauss on March 19, 2009 at 12:05 PM

Liddy could have refused to pay them, perhaps, but it certainly looks as though the Obama administration tacitly wanted the payouts to help retain what talent remained in the units that were getting eliminated.

I dunno. This presumes that the Obama administration rejects Marxism and knows something about capitalist economics 101.

Or maybe they figured, “Hey! if we allow them to earn more upfront, we can tax them more through the back door”.

Buy Danish on March 19, 2009 at 12:06 PM

Liddy is being scapegoated when he obviously was recruited as and is serving in AIG as a civil service. I hope he reminded them of this fact. I was working and missed his testamony are we going to get some video?

DFCtomm on March 19, 2009 at 12:07 PM

If I were Liddy, I’d tell them where to stick their dollar and go back to retirement.

Oh hellyeah! The man’s a true patriot! If he hangs in there and puts up with the crap he’s being put through that he had nothing to do with, it will be because he truly wants to help bring us out of this mess. Why else would anyone tolerate those insufferable idiots?

Texas Gal on March 19, 2009 at 12:07 PM

What else could they do to him?

MadisonConservative on March 19, 2009 at 11:04 AM

Until yesterday, I would not have believed that the Congress would try to enact punitive retroactive taxes aimed at a small, specific group of individuals.

Until yesterday, I would not have believed that any patriotic American citizen would suggest inviting some of the Gitmo terrorists to move here.

Until yesterday, I would not have believed that any president could be so tone-deaf as to squander (probably) tens of millions of dollars to fly across country to do a segment of a comedy TV show while the economy is collapsing.

Ya learn something new every day, MadCon. Too bad most of it is negative in the age of Osama Obama.

MrScribbler on March 19, 2009 at 12:07 PM

In November they are all gone!!!!!!!!! From the local level right up through the Congress!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on March 19, 2009 at 12:10 PM

well isnt that the crux of what obama said about suicide bombing the economy? that if certain financial actors dont get EXACTLY what they want when they want it that they’ll just all pull out of the market, crashing it? that if certain businesses dont get EXACTLY the tax and regulatory environment they want they’ll ALL shut down or move overseas, destroying the job market?

ernesto on March 19, 2009 at 11:49 AM

There is no reason a business that can move to avoid onerous taxation and regulation shouldn’t do exactly that. People in business want to make money. They are no more greedy than anyone else who wants to prosper. The only difference is that they have the ability and the means to escape while the working class does not.

Were you upset when John Kerry’s wife moved Heinz headquarters out of the US?

Jvette on March 19, 2009 at 12:11 PM

This is nuts! All this public, political-posturing excoriation for a buck? Liddy should use this spectacle to bargain for $2.

im not making a value judgement about any of that. it just seems that the whole encouraging atlas to shrug does indeed seem like a petty vindictive game being played with our national well being.

I don’t care if she never made it to the leftards version of a company picnic which they so affectionately refer to as a peace protest. It has everything to do with the fact she engineered 600,000 smackers to the insurgents through their families in Fallujah while our Marine brothers and sisters were fighting there.

True, and more ammunition for justifying an expose of everyone involved and the actions they have taken, though I’m not holding my breath.

Businessmen are dragged before Congressional inquisitions to plead their innocence while the inquisitors do their best to sweep their own misdeeds away before the next election cycle.

Oh, but you do when you defend Pres. Obama’s comparison of them to suicide bombers. The real culprits in this massive debacle are the liberals in Congress, their liberal agenda and the policies they have adopted to further that agenda.

its becoming more and more apparent with each of these incidents that the approaches we’ve taken…whether they be the New Deal/Great Society, or the tearing down of regulatory measures en masse…are all breeding dastardly consequences. We really do need a fresh take, not the “back to FDR” or “back to reagan” philosophies espoused now. Its a shame we’ll never get it.

Suicide bombers was bad language, to be sure. I would’ve advised him to call it a petty vindictive game of chicken. because thats what it is. liberals play that game over things like union support and welfare spending, conservatives play the same game over regulatory structure and tax climates.
