Obama insults Special Olympics? Update: Obama thinks Special Olympics are “wonderful”

posted at 9:59 pm on March 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

You know how you can tell when a President has a bad day?  When his comparison of an American corporation to terrorists is the second-stupidest thing he said:

The first appearance by a sitting president on “The Tonight Show” may well end up being the last.

President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he’s gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

“That’s very good, Mr. President,” Leno said sarcastically.

It’s “like the Special Olympics or something,” the president said.

Maybe he should have brought his Teleprompter with him.  The Anchoress wonders whether the press will treat him like Bush:

One almost gets tired of saying it, but one must say it, still: Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would do with that, had Bush said it. Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done with the Irish PM Teleprompter gaffe (the press has helpfully embargoed the video, so Obama doesn’t have to see it playing 24/7, as Bush would have – had Bush so gaffed). Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done if Bush had given the Prime Minister of Great Britain a lousy pack of 50 “Classic” DVD’s that didn’t work in the UK?

Eventually, even the media will have to realize that Obama is in over his head.  They may be the last ones in on the joke, but eventually they’ll catch onto the fact that Obama is floundering.

Update (AP): The Anchoress’s point is well taken, but honestly, I tire of this politically calculated outrage. We all know what he meant; it was politically incorrect, but more political incorrectness among our political elite is all to the good. Lay off.

Update (Ed): Not if only one side gets away with it, AP.

Also, let’s remember that Obama is supposed to be leading, not campaigning or working as a stand-up comedian.  He’s been insisting that we’re in the worst financial crisis in 70 years.  Going on Leno to discuss his policies could have been a smart step; going on Leno to make quips and one-liners, and doing it badly, hardly builds confidence in his leadership or his priorities.  When he stops with the crisis mentality, then he can show us why his stand-up career would have gone nowhere.

Also, wasn’t it Obama and his team that was screeching about the “political incorrectness” of Rush Limbaugh in hoping he’d fail, and insinuating that it amounted to treason?

Update (AP): Outrageous outrage warrants furious walkback!

“Good afternoon. The President made an offhand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics. He thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world.”

Here we go:

http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/politics&id=6719478&rss=rss-wabc-article-6719478

“The president made an off-hand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics,” White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said. “He thinks the Special Olympics is a wonderful program that gives an opportunity for people with disabilities from around the world.”

They just don’t get it… Actually, they do, they just know that the media won’t blow this up the way they would have if it were a Republican, so he’ll pretty much get away with it.

By the way, if he didn’t mean to “disparage” the Special Olympics… what did he intend to do? It was a joke used to mock his own horrible bowling abilities. He drew a comparison to the Special Olympics. Sounds like “disparaging” the Special Olympics is exactly what he was doing. Joke or not, that’s not the point.

For a high percentage of Americans, if it’s not reported on TV, it never happened. And many of these are elderly, who always vote. So, no matter how much is reported here or elsewhere on the internet, the MSM still have enormous power.

And, what are we to do?

Star20 on March 19, 2009 at 10:36 PM

My guess is that Obama apologizes profusely for this, one time, (after twisting NBC’s arm off to burn the tape), with some reference to being tired (AGAIN!) and some type of deflection to Bush (OF COURSE!) and his going to bed early, but the White House isn’t going to say anything until after the show to do whatever they can to avoid driving viewership up.

Update (Ed): Not if only one side gets away with it, AP.

You nailed it Ed…I’m really tired of having to accept the two-standard system that is now built into any discussion of leftist hypocrisy. Too many ‘moderates’ shudder over this kind of criticism of a Democrats…but would rip the head off a conservative Republican if they even hinted at something like this. Funny, but we just can’t win. Yeah, there’s too much PC, and yes, it’s the left’s own special weapon, but why can’t we call them on their hypocrisy without being called ‘partisan’ in the process?

It’s funny how the discussion turns to “political correctness” when the offense is against those with mental retardation/developmental disabilities. For some reason we’re supposed to back off the “PC Crap” when it comes to those who are least able to defend themselves.

AP – as one of the few here who is actually a parent of a child with a developmental disability due to Down syndrome – I must respectfully disagree with your stance. Obama’s comment just drives it home a little further for me that he has absolutely no respect for the life of my son. My first clue was his heartless decision to vote against the IL version of the Born Alive Infant Protection Act after he heard Jill Stanek talking about the death of a born alive aborted child with Down syndrome.

Obama is green.

Candy Slice on March 19, 2009 at 10:44 PM

Quite honestly if his touted opponent in his re-election bid Sarah Palin did not have a disabled child, Obama could have allowed the MSM to whitewash the episode and sweep it under the rug.

But with Sarah Palin I contend this insult will be never swept under the rug.

Do you remember right after the GOP Convention when Obama was down in the polls he made that ‘lipstick on a pig comment’ in a room where everyone laughed; chalk this episode up as well to Sarah leading in GOP polls, word that SarahPAC is catching fire, yesterday Sarah made a flip comment that Obama could take credit for the construction of the pipeline and then Sarah today refused almost 1/2 of the stimulus money.

As they say in sports, “They don’t like each other.”

He doesn’t agree with you 100%, so he should join Obama? He doesn’t feel like playing the faux outrage game, so he’s a liberal? Ridiculous.
I sometimes think the bulk of the HA commenters are trolls with their constant chants of “go join the huffpo crowd!”

Trent1289 on March 19, 2009 at 10:45 PM

Spot on, my friend.

Too many idiots here are just ready to label you a Frumian liberal fakeocon.

It’s outrageous and absurd. This stupid herd mentality has just completely turned me off to the conservative movement, and I’m as conservative as they come.

I’m tired of the petty politics and soundbite harping. Yea, so Obama made an offhand comment. I don’t give a flying fark.

Let’s be mission oriented. Focus on differentiating ourselves. Focus on presenting real ideas and alternatives. Not harping on one liners, Obama being a “sekrit Muslim,” or Meghan McCain’s weight.

People can say, “Well the left did it for eight years!” I don’t care about their past behavior.

I don’t care. That is who they are, and who we are not.

We are not the left, nor should we act like them.

blatantblue on March 19, 2009 at 10:50 PM

Obama is green.

Candy Slice on March 19, 2009 at 10:44 PM

Half-green, half-black.

Like these. (made in Indonesia BTW)

omnipotent on March 19, 2009 at 10:50 PM

Let’s let the Special Olympics folks do something about it, and if they don’t then cry hypocrite.

Rob Taylor on March 19, 2009 at 10:47 PM

You mean like when all the Women groups went after Clinton….wait….never mind.

TheBigOldDog on March 19, 2009 at 10:50 PM

Yes, you’re absolutely right. Obama hates special needs children and wants them all to die.

SnarkVader on March 19, 2009 at 10:42 PM

No, they’re just funny to him. Tomorrow he’s sitting in for Jim Norton on Opie & Anthony.

Jim Treacher on March 19, 2009 at 10:50 PM

He just keeps pissing me off. My BIL is diasbled and has participated in many special olympics. I find this very offensive. I better stop while I am ahead.

Brat4life on March 19, 2009 at 10:50 PM

He has to be held to his own standards using the same tactics.

TheBigOldDog on March 19, 2009 at 10:43 PM

I suggest using one standard for everyone.

When is it funny or even acceptable for anyone to be dismissive of or to make fun of mentally retarded people?

Loxodonta on March 19, 2009 at 10:51 PM

I think this whole mess could be cleared up if the administration just let Joe Biden come out and talk about it for about 30 minutes.

Star20 on March 19, 2009 at 10:36 PM

Couldn’t agree more.

Man, you guys are missing the point – Without the Teleprompter, ‘O’ is the Special Olympics.

TinMan13 on March 19, 2009 at 10:39 PM

Now, that is an insult to those in the Special Olympics. He’s in a lower class – The Special Uh-lympics. And according to Ingraham, his strength is in tennis.

President Obama thinks so.

TheBigOldDog on March 19, 2009 at 10:52 PM

I agree with AP, some of you guys sound just as stupid as the other side, who can just as legitimately play “What if Bush did it” at your expense.

DaveS on March 19, 2009 at 10:41 PM

Oh really? And just who is in power now, and how did they get there? The Dems. By slamming every move the other side made. Deal with it. It’s time to steal from their playbook because we seem to be dealing with less than intelligent voters.

Another RINO (or a liberal pretending to be conservative) with no balls. They can’t stand any standing up to liberals or using the same tactics liberals use.

Hello?! Why do you think that liberals are in power right now? Because they were polite to Republicans?

Gabe on March 19, 2009 at 10:53 PM

I don’t think Allah is liberal. Far from it. But he does not need to be telling people to lay off when he just loves these long threads.

Terrye on March 19, 2009 at 10:53 PM

AP is wanting to go to the Knife Fight with the Dems using a butter knife.

jp on March 19, 2009 at 10:53 PM

Just remember. The MSM doesn’t report it. It didn’t happen. All part of that “Spotlight on Government” thing. They like to bring that up, especially when their newspapers are tanking financially.

GarandFan on March 19, 2009 at 10:54 PM

On more important note, I don’t think Megan McCain’s ass is NEAR as big as The First Lady’s.

Star20 on March 19, 2009 at 10:54 PM

When you have a pet that sh*ts on the carpet, you don’t walk away from the pile and say “he didn’t mean it.”

You rub his nose in it.

If someone in Osama Obama’s life had bothered to rub his nose in some of the steaming piles of dung he has produced over the years, maybe he’d be a little closer to what normal people define as “human.”

Too late now. The only thing that will cure him of messing on the nation’s carpets is impeachment.

I pray for it to happen soon, before the vile smell of incompetence and Marxism reaches an unbearable level.

Some people have no stomach for the fight. They think things are going to magically change. Tinker Bell is going to show up and sprinkle some fairy dust and make everything all better.

Loxodonta on March 19, 2009 at 10:51 PM

That’s fine, when all agree on a standard. until then, people are held, if nothing else, to at least the standards they try and hold others to. The Precedent needs to be held, at the very least, to the standards he tries to impose on others.

Those who demand PC have to live by their own demands. We lost a whole Senator because of the non-word, “macaca” – which was beyond ridiculous. This isn’t just fun and games. It’s deadly serious stuff.

progressoverpeace on March 19, 2009 at 10:55 PM

When Republicans get caught in a sex scandal it ends up getting magnified by the liberals. Because, they say, it is the Republicans that stress family values and morals. Therefore, when Democrats get caught being non-politically correct, we get to magnify it since they stress political correctness.

TheBigOldDog on March 19, 2009 at 10:51 PM

All their fire fighting did/does/and will do nothing for this country.

We’re thinking too much in the box of party this, party that.

I could care less about parties. This is about the future of our country; something that young people like myself have more of a stake in right now than others. I don’t feel like playing the SAME OLD GAME that has been played for decades. Enough.

I don’t care about getting even with the left’s past pathetic behavior. They are like annoying children. You should ignore them and let them whine in the corner.

With a decrepit economy, rising China, aggression from Russia, al-Qa’eda growing in the Maghreb and Indochina, and socialists making moves everywhere, I’m not interested in playing the same old Ram Sham Bo game where we just kick each other in the balls into someone says uncle.

We can dish it out to each other all day, but Rome will still burn.

I’m more interested in putting out the fire. Let the children on the left play. It is time for us to rise above.
