Obama insults Special Olympics? Update: Obama thinks Special Olympics are “wonderful”

You know how you can tell when a President has a bad day?  When his comparison of an American corporation to terrorists is the second-stupidest thing he said:

The first appearance by a sitting president on “The Tonight Show” may well end up being the last.

President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he’s gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

“That’s very good, Mr. President,” Leno said sarcastically.

It’s “like the Special Olympics or something,” the president said.

Maybe he should have brought his Teleprompter with him.  The Anchoress wonders whether the press will treat him like Bush:

One almost gets tired of saying it, but one must say it, still: Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would do with that, had Bush said it. Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done with the Irish PM Teleprompter gaffe (the press has helpfully embargoed the video, so Obama doesn’t have to see it playing 24/7, as Bush would have – had Bush so gaffed). Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done if Bush had given the Prime Minister of Great Britain a lousy pack of 50 “Classic” DVD’s that didn’t work in the UK?

Eventually, even the media will have to realize that Obama is in over his head.  They may be the last ones in on the joke, but eventually they’ll catch onto the fact that Obama is floundering.

Update (AP): The Anchoress’s point is well taken, but honestly, I tire of this politically calculated outrage. We all know what he meant; it was politically incorrect, but more political incorrectness among our political elite is all to the good. Lay off.

Update (Ed): Not if only one side gets away with it, AP.

Also, let’s remember that Obama is supposed to be leading, not campaigning or working as a stand-up comedian.  He’s been insisting that we’re in the worst financial crisis in 70 years.  Going on Leno to discuss his policies could have been a smart step; going on Leno to make quips and one-liners, and doing it badly, hardly builds confidence in his leadership or his priorities.  When he stops with the crisis mentality, then he can show us why his stand-up career would have gone nowhere.

Also, wasn’t it Obama and his team that was screeching about the “political incorrectness” of Rush Limbaugh in hoping he’d fail, and insinuating that it amounted to treason?

Update (AP): Outrageous outrage warrants furious walkback!

“Good afternoon. The President made an offhand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics. He thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world.”

I would rather have him on Leno making stupid up-pc jokes than in the White House doing more damage to the economy.

athensboy on March 20, 2009 at 7:09 AM

Work hard? Please, tell me the work he has done. He’s done nothing but sign a few bills; fly all over the country on Air Force One at our expense; go on The Tonight Show; give our biggest ally a shabby gift that he can’t even use; and have a cocktail party every Wednesday night.

His cabinet is not complete, his Treasury Department is a joke, his State Department is seen as internationally ignorant, his VP must be kept locked in a box somewhere, and his economy is in the crapper.

Yeah, some work ethic he has.

AP your suggestion that people “Lay off” is almost as offensive as the Obama’s comment. Maybe if you had a family member who actually was in Spec Olympics you might not consider this unacceptable political outrage.

Care to remeber the outrage when Don Imus called the basketball girls “nappy-headed ho’s? In spite of him apologizing profusely he got fired – why should a shock jock be held to different standards than the President of the US?

I heard Governor Rendell of PA making lame excuses for Obama this morning…he said ‘everybody makes these kind of verbal slip-ups.’ No…NO! Not everybody makes that kind of joke. Elected officials don’t do it. Only a complete and utter moron makes careless remarks like that on national television.

THINK, Mr. President! You ‘won,’ so grow up and act like you’re in the most dignified office in the entire country…because you are! You have responsibilities and constituents whether you like or care about them or not…stop treating this job like you’re too cool for it!

I would let this whole thing go, if President Obama gave as much to the Special Olympics as Hamas. A nice $900 million check would make his all right, but just don’t let it cross Kathleen Sebellius’ desk. She likes the ponies too much.

You can send lowlife to Harvard and Columbia and still end up witih lowlife (not so surprisingly these days as it might have been 50 years ago).

Oh, and did you notice that he was able to mock disabled kids without his (otherwise ubiquitous) teleprompter?

Akzed on March 20, 2009 at 9:57 AM

Barack’s blowing trillions and people are actually outraged about a decent joke

It’s the double-standard that gets me. Like the Anchoress said, “What if Bush/Chaney/Rush/Ingraham/Gingritch/Palin/Coulter said it?” It’s OK to insult special needs people if you’re a Lib. The media and the rest of the left will gladly sweep it under the rug and say it’s no big deal. If you’re a Conservative, your career is over no matter how many times you apologize.

It is fast becoming an insult to even hear a liberal talk about how “smart” they are.

They have lifted Obama up to some super status as a man that is capable of healing the world and bringing change with just the outreach of his hand.

They have anointed Obama as a leader that surpasses Lincoln,JFK,and FDR without hardly a single significant accomplishment.

All liberals can do is go on and on and on about his approval ratings while the economy tanks,Foreign leaders are exposed to idiots like Hillary, trade wars starting up with Mexico/Columbia/China during a recession, and his administration spends all of its time going after Rush,Santelli, and Cramer while cabinet nominees drop like flies.

Mr. 57 states personifies the liberal standards of intelligence of being “smart” just by holding liberal ideology and everybody else that does not is just “stupid”.
Lack of actual actions, accomplishments, and achievements mean nothing because just the fact that you “feel” right and “speak well” is the only standard of competence that need be met in liberal land:

Obama’s intelligence:

Obama: I want to be president of all 57 states

The SURGE will not work,it will only make things worse in Iraq

Hey Bam, that’s not the door!

It looks like President Obama hasn’t gotten acquainted to his White House surroundings. On the way back to the Oval Office Tuesday, the President approached a paned window, instead of the actual door — located a few feet to his right.

Last May, he claimed that tornadoes in Kansas killed a whopping 10,000 people: “In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.” The actual death toll: 12.

Barack Obama, Friday, on why he’s losing in Kentucky:
“What it says is that I’m not very well known in that part of the country,” Obama said. “Sen. Clinton, I think, is much better known, coming from a nearby state of Arkansas. So it’s not surprising that she would have an advantage in some of those states in the middle.”

Can the man who wants to be President please tell us why Arkansas is somehow closer to Kentucky than Illinois??????
Oh, and after you flunk 5th grade geography, go to your backup plan — blame Fox News:

Obama has as much trouble with numbers as he has with maps. Last March, on the anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march in Selma, Ala., he claimed his parents united as a direct result of the civil rights movement: “There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Ala., because some folks are willing to march across a bridge. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born.”

Obama was born in 1961. The Selma march took place in 1965. His spokesman, Bill Burton, later explained that Obama was “speaking metaphorically about the civil-rights movement as a whole.”

Earlier this month in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Obama showed off his knowledge of the war in Afghanistan by homing in on a lack of translators: “We only have a certain number of them, and if they are all in Iraq, then it’s harder for us to use them in Afghanistan.” The real reason it’s “harder for us to use them” in Afghanistan: Iraqis speak Arabic or Kurdish. The Afghanis speak Pashto, Farsi, or other non-Arabic languages.

And in perhaps the most seriously troubling set of gaffes of them all, Obama told a Portland crowd over the weekend that Iran doesn’t “pose a serious threat to us” — cluelessly arguing that “tiny countries” with small defense budgets can’t do us harm — and then promptly flip-flopped the next day, claiming, “I’ve made it clear for years that the threat from Iran is grave.”

“What you’re now seeing is a profit and earnings ratios get to the point that buying stocks is a good thing if you have a long-term perspective on it,” he said to reporters after meeting in the Oval Office with visiting British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Shouldn’t a President of the US know that “P/E Ratio” means “price-to-earnings ratio,” not “profit and earnings ratio?” There is a difference.

“And I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it.”
Obama
State of the Union Address
Feb. 24,2009
Karl Benz generally is acknowledged as the inventor of the modern automobile.[8]
An automobile powered by his own four-stroke cycle gasoline engine was built in Mannheim, Germany by Karl Benz in 1885

Obama Wants To Be Absolutely Clear on Who Is Israel’s Friend
“Let me be absolutely clear,” Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, said today at a press conference in Amman, Jordan. “Israel is a strong friend of Israel’s.

“You know, it’s always a bad practice to say ‘always’ or ‘never.’” — Obama, speaking in Amman today.

How many “potatoe” moments does it take for the media to start a doofus narrative on a candidate? Barack Obama provided yet another during his visit to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota yesterday:

He did express curiosity about the filming of a chase scene in “North by Northwest,” Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 classic starring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint that included a death-defying scramble over Rushmore’s presidential faces.
“How did they get up there in the first place?” he asked ranger Wesley Jensen.
“They didn’t. It was a movie set,” Jensen told him.
“Pretty spiffy, isn’t it,” said the Illinois senator, summing up his overall impressions.

On Thursday Obama told the Orlando Sentinel that he would meet with Chavez and “one of the obvious high priorities in my talks with President Hugo Chavez would be the fermentation of anti-American sentiment in Latin America, his support of FARC in Colombia and other issues he would want to talk about.”
OK, so a strong declaration that Chavez is supporting FARC, which Obama intends to push him on.
But then on Friday he said any government supporting FARC should be isolated.

“We will shine a light on any support for the FARC that comes from neighboring governments,” he said in a speech in Miami. “This behavior must be exposed to international condemnation, regional isolation, and – if need be – strong sanctions. It must not stand.”

So Barack Obama’s uncle helped Patton’s 3rd Army liberate the concentration camp at Auschwitz, which is a neat trick, considering that the 3rd Army never made it into southern Poland. It was instead Russians that liberated the camp, and if that wasn’t embarrassing enough for the rookie Senator, his mother was an only child.
The Washington Post isn’t impressed, and for good reason. It wasn’t a “lie”. He just didn’t get any of the truth right.

This time Barack Obama is seeing America’s fallen heroes in his audience in New Mexico:
Barack Obama opens up his Memorial Day speech in Las Cruces, New Mexico:
On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today — our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.

The list goes on and on and on for the liberal hero that we have been told is a”lightworker”,compared to Jesus, and is going to change the world according to all the “smart ones”.

Throw in all the broken promises like Campaign Finance Reform,no lobbyist in his administration,no earmarks, transparency, accountability,Rendition,NSA wiretapping, using state secrets, keeping troops in Iraq.

This is not a sign of intelligence to people with an IQ above Ted Kennedy’s blood alcohol level.

Obama is an elitist amateur that has no real accomplishments and is making a complete fool of himself on the world’s stage and the democrats and MSM own this 100%.

CHICAGO (CBS) ―

After the first day of the NCAA basketball tournament, President Obama’s bracket appears to be a bust.

The president, a self-described basketball junkie, managed to only pick 11 of 16 games correctly–or 69 percent.

CBS 2 imported Obama’s picks, which were originally made for ESPN, into its Bracket Challenge game. Currently, the president ranks in the 27th percentile among all players.

Maybe Obama meant that they let him release the ball from halfway down the alley, to improve his scores.

Obama might want to take a second look at the Special Olympics before he insults them–some of the participants are amazing physical specimens.

Up until a few years ago, I would run local 5K (5,000 meter) road races here in Connecticut, and a few of them would allow participation by people in wheelchairs. Some of the wheelchair “runners” had amazing arm and shoulder strength, and would finish literally a mile ahead of the leading runner on foot, in a race slightly over 3 miles long.

Earth to Obama: As the saying goes, don’t criticize someone until you’ve walked a mile (or three) in their shoes…

chunderroad on March 20, 2009 at 9:46 AM

Hydrocephalus, aka “water on the brain.” Excess CSF fluid builds up in the skull of some, often leading to mental retardation or even death. It’s not as obvious anymore, due to 20th century diagnostic and surgical advances such as shunts to drain the fluid and minimize impacts.

Leno apparently started it with the reference to the “waterhead dog,” but Obama’s “dripping/tripping” comment seems strangely… congruent… with his “Special Olympics” remark.

The amusing thing is that to fix his gaffe, he called a non-retarded life-long Democrat who heads the Special Olympics and apologized TO HIM. What he ought to do is reprise his race speech of the century, that one that nobody remembers anymore, and go on and on about how he could no more disown his own joke about the Special Olympics than he could disown his grandfather who routinely and robustly threw eggs at leprosy victims in that Hawaiian leprosy asylum.

Then he could challenge us all to have a robust discussion on physical and mental limitations and how society tends to laugh about them, then go off to have monkey love with his wife while the rest of us marvel at his bravery in saying the popular thing.

A more decent human being would have issued a blanket apology to those with disabilities and their families showing contrition for his poor choice of a joke and promising that he’ll be committed to continuing the trend towards greater inclusion and making real progress rather than making empty gestures intended only to cover his own butt.

getalife and the rest of the “smart ones” spent 8 yrs. on a 24/7 cycle pointing out anything they could that would show Bush was incompetent.

Now when Obama is making a total a$$ clown out of himself and showing just how ignorant he is,getalife doesn’t think it is important all of a sudden.

You become more pathetic with each lightweight unsubstantiated post.

I’ll have plenty of hate to fuel me through the next four 8 years.

getalife on March 20, 2009 at 10:19 AM

Hypocrisy is the platform of the democratic party.

You show it with almost every post.

You are to stupid to even see your own hypocrisy.

Obama would never slight his Liberal base. ;-)

Ain’t happening! Now that the shoe is on the other foot, I’ll enjoy every little slip up to remind you of the hypocrisy that your pathetic party politics used for eight years. If you don’t like it, skip over the comment—it’s still a free country, isn’t it?

mossberg500 on March 20, 2009 at 10:50 AM

Gosh, good thing Sarah Palin wasn’t in office, eh? Who knows what evil things she mutters about retards and stuff. She probably couldn’t even stand to be around a special-needs child.

hawksruleva on March 20, 2009 at 10:51 AM

He’s going to lose fair and square in 2012 because he is an incompetent man. Let’s not have any finger pointing, accusations, or derangement. You democrats need to start mentally preparing for what’s going to happen. He will lose, possibly in a landslide.

jeff_from_mpls on March 20, 2009 at 9:32 AM

So much for the Peter Principle. Barack went from janitor, to the President and CEO of the most powerful hegemony the world has ever known. My, how foolish the electorate is.

hot-heir on March 20, 2009 at 10:52 AM

I have no outrage, I just want someone on left to admit that the PC crap has gone way too far.

If it were a GOP senator, resigning would be the least they would be calling for.

Look at the current language regarding terrorists, terrorist acts, suicide bombers and detainees. Its ludicrous.

Baxter Greene on March 20, 2009 at 10:54 AM

The president, a self-described basketball junkie, managed to only pick 11 of 16 games correctly–or 69 percent.

Ha! I got 13 of them right! My friend, with whom I have a bracket battle with, got 15 correct. And we’re both women…and we’re not the President.

He should really start figuring out how to govern at some point. Sheesh.

And if the special olympics doesn’t want to be used as a metaphor for lower competition, then they need to end the segregation and open their competitions to everybody.

LevStrauss on March 20, 2009 at 9:55 AM

You do need be concerned about that particular “segregation”. Your comment indicates that you are already well below the level of class and achievement shown by those who drive themselves to compete in the Special Olympics.

getalife on March 20, 2009 at 10:59 AM

I tell you what, show me a Special Olympian and I’ll show you someone who has worked harder to overcome greater challenges resulting in more character than this condescending, eliteist snob. I wonder who he’ll slight next – the mentally ill?

Dork B. on March 20, 2009 at 9:21 AM

The mentally ill, he obese, the injured military, I’m sure I’m missing someone…

Obama is a perfect example of how money can’t buy class. Nancy Pelosi too. Money, education, classless.

Durn straight. The President is a totally DIFFERENT Marxist (who studied Alinsky’s methods).

As for this being unimportant, it is not high on my list of Obama’s missteps, but I’d say it ranks somewhat higher on the outrage scale than “nuc-yew-ler” or “mis-underestimated” — and possibly a little beyond “p-o-t-a-t-o-e“. Do you disagree? Were you as put off with people who made a fuss over those faux pas as you are with this one? Did you tell them so?

And an absolute pass given by the perpetually bent kneed MSM that is nothing more than activists for the democratic party.

It was stated over and over that being a failed community organizer and a Senator with no accomplishments is not the foundation of being able to lead this country.

“But he speaks so well” was pretty much all the liberals and the friends in the press needed.

This clown and his circus of fools is 100% their making.
