Obama insults Special Olympics? Update: Obama thinks Special Olympics are “wonderful”

You know how you can tell when a President has a bad day? When his comparison of an American corporation to terrorists is the second-stupidest thing he said:
The first appearance by a sitting president on “The Tonight Show” may well end up being the last.
President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.
Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he’s gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.
He bowled a 129, the president said.
“That’s very good, Mr. President,” Leno said sarcastically.
It’s “like the Special Olympics or something,” the president said.
Maybe he should have brought his Teleprompter with him. The Anchoress wonders whether the press will treat him like Bush:
One almost gets tired of saying it, but one must say it, still: Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would do with that, had Bush said it. Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done with the Irish PM Teleprompter gaffe (the press has helpfully embargoed the video, so Obama doesn’t have to see it playing 24/7, as Bush would have – had Bush so gaffed). Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done if Bush had given the Prime Minister of Great Britain a lousy pack of 50 “Classic” DVD’s that didn’t work in the UK?
Eventually, even the media will have to realize that Obama is in over his head. They may be the last ones in on the joke, but eventually they’ll catch onto the fact that Obama is floundering.
Update (AP): The Anchoress’s point is well taken, but honestly, I tire of this politically calculated outrage. We all know what he meant; it was politically incorrect, but more political incorrectness among our political elite is all to the good. Lay off.
Update (Ed): Not if only one side gets away with it, AP.
Also, let’s remember that Obama is supposed to be leading, not campaigning or working as a stand-up comedian. He’s been insisting that we’re in the worst financial crisis in 70 years. Going on Leno to discuss his policies could have been a smart step; going on Leno to make quips and one-liners, and doing it badly, hardly builds confidence in his leadership or his priorities. When he stops with the crisis mentality, then he can show us why his stand-up career would have gone nowhere.
Also, wasn’t it Obama and his team that was screeching about the “political incorrectness” of Rush Limbaugh in hoping he’d fail, and insinuating that it amounted to treason?
Update (AP): Outrageous outrage warrants furious walkback!
“Good afternoon. The President made an offhand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics. He thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world.”

As much as I appreciate an Ed vs. AP kittenfight, this dustup won’t have any legs because the MSM will dutifully ignore it or spread frosting on it and say, “mmm, tasty”.

One of hist first non-teleprompter statements was a gratuitous insult of Nancy Reagan. This guy is an absolute idiot. For all those parents whose kids didn’t get into Columbia or Harvard, be thankful that you didn’t have to waste all that money.

Yes, he did, and you know it. Any time you call someone a “retard” because they did something stupid, you insult children who have the diagnosis of mental retardation.
It has less to do with PC crap than it has to do with defending a group of people who work utterly hard for every achievement they attain.
I have no hope of having you see my point of view and I don’t have the luxury of your point of view.

Oh – and interesting thing about Simon Cowell – he’s often analytically correct when it comes to the singers he’s critiquing. So what is Obama saying about his critics in Washington?
Candy Slice on March 20, 2009 at 7:22 AM
Actually, less than 60% [56% as of yesterday], and of them only 37% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty percent (30%) now Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of +7.
With 68% of Americans believing the Bailout Money is going to those who caused the economic crisis his polling numbers are certain to only go down.
Care to compare the current administration to the Special Olymipics? A bomb, eh? certainly does.

I had a hard time following you. So I’m with AZCoyote:
I caught a bit of Willie Geist (sp?) on MSNBC’s Morning Joe this morning. While ultimately willing to let the crack go, he made the important point that Obama’s crack was a joke one of us might have told when we were eight years old.
Obama was childish. The guy is 47 years old. It’s not a PC thing. It’s a maturity thing.

Who listened to testimony about a newborn with Down syndrome left to die on a shelf without any medical or palliative care and then voted to allow it to continue legally?
Who just stereotyped a group of athletes with disabilities as low achievers for the sake of a joke on a late night talk show. For the record – a Special Olympic athlete here in Detroit has bowled at least three perfect games. So, yes, it was a bigoted stereotype and not a fact.
To what kind of “soul” were you referring?

The kind of soul that believes impersonal government entitlements should replace the personal assistance that is available from immediate and extended families, friends, affiliate organizations (churches, parishes, synagogues), and local charities–if only people would step away from the mailbox and seek it.
Institutionalizing and concentrating entitlements in the federal government is his ideal of a soul.
Grassley chose his words very poorly this week when he urged AIG execs to consider suicide. But he had one thing right about bailouts and, by extension I’d submit, entitlements. These represent nothing more than the act of lining up to suck on a teat.
athensboy, decent parents know that at some point, they must move their children from sucking on mommy’s teat to standing on their own two feet. Perpetual entitlements, without a plan to wean people off them, is not a show of compassion–it’s enslavement.

My hope is that he leaves the teleprompter at home more often. That is when is absolute stupidity is amplified. My God even Clinton could memorize a speech and deliver it without anyone knowing that the teleprompter wasn’t working. Not a fan of “hey little girl wanna polish my gavel” Clinton but I give him credit for that.

I thought it was very offensive of Obama to say this. He is no comedian and he had no business being on Leno. He is as gaffe-prone as Biden. The thought of those 2 dealing with an international incident is scary and he is waaaay over his head.
Whoever thinks he is working hard is a fool.
becki51758 on March 20, 2009 at 7:55 AM
I wish Obama could spent one day with a friend of my family who has Down Syndrome. This young man can write but not speak clearly, and he adores his job as a bagger at a grocery store and is never late for it.
When his grandfather died last year, he couldn’t express his feelings in words, but he was a great blessing to everyone in his family through the picture he drew: He depicted his loved ones sitting around crying, but overhead was a rainbow, sunshine, and “JESUS” in big, colorful letters.
He has participated in the Special Olympics several times, and his sport is bowling.
I don’t think he would ever make a mean joke about Obama. There are many things this young man hasn’t learned to do, that’s true; and I’m glad that being unkind like Obama is one of them.
By the way, as many as nine out of ten babies who are believed to have Down Syndrome are now killed before birth, through abortion. I’m glad I have gotten to know this special young man, because the world would be a much poorer place without him.

tomas on March 20, 2009 at 8:02 AM
Without Teleprompter telling him what to say, Obama exposes himself – no class, little grounding in the fundamentals (a word he is so fond of). That’s what happens when you are abandoned by a selfish mother. You call Jessica Simpson “weight-challenged”. Or a reporter “sweetie.” Or you diminish the office you represent by attacking a talk radio host and appearing on late-night TV.
Nobody taught him to be chivalrous or gallant; no one taught him not to make fun of the disabled even in an off-hand way, and no one gave him the grounding to avoid being a petulant, thin-skinned adult. This is our President, leader of the free world.

bridgetown on March 20, 2009 at 8:16 AM
Political correctness is an arbitrary speech code that’s not governed by the inherent dignity of actual human beings, rather it’s an arbitrary dictum not to diss friends of the democrat party, namely the militant identity groups like gays and “women” and minorities.
You don’t see the difference between an arbitrary command to leave “certain groups” alone, which is an exercise of coercion, and a moral obligation to respect the inner dignity of the most vulnerable in a society?
Political correctness is frivolous. Respect for human life is not.

johnnyU on March 20, 2009 at 8:30 AM
Aside from the obvious — he’s one of their own — there’s maybe another reason. I don’t have time to read 1000 posts (1000?!?), so I may not be the first to make this point, but remember what the left thinks is really the RIGHT response to the mentally retarded: abort them. Many have even gone on record as being in favor of euthanizing them if they do happen to make it into the world. We got a really good look at what the left thought of Sarah Palin’s choice to bring a Down’s syndrome baby to term.
Love for terrorist; love for criminals; love for illegal aliens; but love for the mentally disabled? Nah.
I don’t so much think he “meant harm” as he lacks sensitivity. It’s like one-time Texas gubernatorial candidate Clayton Williams, who was blowing out Ann Richards ’til he remarked about an unwelcome rainstorm that “it’s like being raped; you can’t do anything about it, so you might as well just lie back and enjoy it.” He wasn’t condoning rape, but it was an incredibly insensitive thing to say, and he rightly paid a political price for saying it.
RegularJoe on March 20, 2009 at 8:32 AM
I see what you mean about the knee jerk freak out that defines the left. And I don’t think he meant harm in his remarks about the Special Olympics or Simpson or the reporter. But there is something to be said about the slip ups he’s making. It reflects his core character and what is missing. He isn’t very dignified. Or respectful. But, damn, he is elegant, isn’t he?

GAWD, the never ending AWESOMENESS of the foolishness of Barack Obama. It’s been said before, but I just feel it needs to be repeated: Obama is actually as dumb as the media and liberals accused Dubya of being.
Don’t underestimate the coming backlash of “what if Bush did it.” The thing about “what if Bush did it” is that, because Bush is such a regular guy compared to Obama’s elite prig persona, such sentiments are only half a step away from “what if i did it?” Mocking the Special olympics and the mentally disabled is such a no- no in the “regular” world and normal people get caught up in it all the time. I will give two examples from people I know.
A co- worker had a MySpace page in which another user posted a little cartoon to his comments thread that said: “What’s better than winning a gold medal in the Special Olympics? Not being retarded.” Very tasteless and it was found out by admin types at work (I’m in law enforcement) and the co- worker was subsequently disciplined for “conduct unbecoming.” Pretty harsh.
My second story: I have a friend who worked for awhile at a social service type agency that did a lot of contract work with group homes for the mentally challenged and stuff like that. They were preparing to throw a party for some of their “clients” and my friend jokingly suggested that they could use the Black Eyed Peas song “Let’s get retarded in here” for the theme. Mildly tasteless and this friend doesn’t have an evil bone in her body. BOOM. Straight to her boss’s office to get bawled out to the point she was in tears.
Now, I suspect, but have never directly asked this friend, that she voted for Obama. She will not be amused with this, especially if he gets a free pass on it. I suspect that there a lot of people like her who will become angrier and angrier as the gaffes pile up. And they will pile up. Because Obama is as dumb as george Bush was supposed to be.

Wow, he has time to “practice” his bowling while the country is falling down. And it’s so nice he gets to spend this time with his girls. I’m sure all of us working multiple jobs would love to have this extra time to lounge around.
Maybe he could have used this extra time to read some of the bills he’s signed……….

I’ve worked in higher for over a decade… PC was the creation of the Left and I can’t even say I’m going to the “Men’s” room without being written up for using “insensitive and sexually degrading language.”
mankai on March 20, 2009 at 8:57 AM
and miss his conga lessons for his part-ays?
nah he’ll let SanFran Nan work out the details…er oops she didn’t read it wither to hear her tell it.
sven10077 on March 20, 2009 at 8:59 AM
The scary part is that he bowls better than he governs.
Hammertime on March 20, 2009 at 9:00 AM
Yes, I’d be very much in favor of adults governing. Maybe in four years we’ll get that. But someone so impetuous as to make such a statement as Obama made, in front of a large audience guaranteed to include many Special Olympic participants and their families, is not the guy I want going in to talk to Putin or Ahmadinijad. This makes me wonder if it was Obama’s idea to present the Russians with a big red button. It’s as though there is NO thought to the implications of the message. It’s also the guy who gave our closest ally a bunch of DVDs that could have been picked up at Sam’s club — in a format that won’t work in his home country! He clearly gave more thought to his NCAA tourney picks than to that gift.
He’s a pretty smart guy, but he’s a danger because he thinks he’s even smarter than he is. That causes him to be incautious, and as a result he makes big mistakes. On the Leno show, that’s embarrassing; in international diplomacy, it can be deadly.
RegularJoe on March 20, 2009 at 9:00 AM
Along with “American Idol” and “The Real World” viewers, Leno’s audience are the type people who lap up Oslime-a’s bile without considering the feelings of superiority he has toward them. He is the typical limousine liberal who uses the backs of the underprivileged to elevate himself to the heights of power over the rest of us.

It would be relevant if he was one.
TwinkietheKid on March 20, 2009 at 9:01 AM
And just imagine the outcry if Bush ever said this…
ErinF on March 20, 2009 at 9:02 AM
Can we just ignore him now?
Rockygold on March 20, 2009 at 9:05 AM
I would rather have him on Leno making stupid up-pc jokes than in the White House doing more damage to the economy.
Ann NY on March 20, 2009 at 9:06 AM
Ed only you and the far right wackos think Obama is in over his head. The other 60% think he is doing fine under grueling circumstances. I bet you though Bush was a great president too. Our side knows all you guys do is try to tear Obama down, you have no true leaders on your side except Jobba the Hut (Rush). So keep on whining , Obama will continue to work hard. Yours is a party without a soul.

I see… The President of the United States can make a “retarded” joke but I can’t?
What’s the world coming to?
