Confirmed: DVDs that Obama gave Gordon Brown are the wrong format

posted at 4:50 pm on March 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Media Blog, one final cringeworthy indignity from the gifts that keep on giving. Until now I thought Obama’s team had spent about five minutes brainstorming on what to get Brown. I was wrong. It was more like two minutes.

What’s that term The One’s been using for his foreign policy? Ah, right. “Smart power.”

Alas, when the PM settled down to begin watching them the other night, he found there was a problem.

The films only worked in DVD players made in North America and the words “wrong region” came up on his screen. Although he mournfully had to put the popcorn away, he is unlikely to jeopardise the special relationship – or “special partnership”, as we are now supposed to call it – by registering a complaint…

A White House spokesman sniggered when I put the story to him and he was still looking into the matter when my deadline came last night.

By the way, when Obama’s unlikely gift was disclosed, a reader emailed me to ask if Clueless was among the films. Funnily enough, it was not.

What’d he get the Irish PM for St. Patrick’s Day, a kilt? Exit question: Seriously, as minor as this is, doesn’t someone deserve to be fired for it?

Update: Iowahawk e-mails to remind me that he called this 10 days ago, but, he says, “In Obama’s defense at least they weren’t Betamax.”

Blowback

Kensington, you’ve got a great idea.

Since half the people don’t know who the President and Vice-President are anyway, we should just pretend that McCain and Palin won the election. Then, as you say, just let the bylines rip:

“McCain thanks himself for inviting Irish Prime Minister to White House for St. Patrick’s day.”

“Palin threatens to ride into every town in America that wastes stimulus money.”

When the prescient remind us that McCain and Palin did not win the election, we can respond, “Oh. But those things really happened, didn’t they?”

Obama is Amateur Hour? I think even less than Amateur Hour. At least the guys on Amateur Hour did their homework and put their best foot forward. This Obama performance is an unready-for-prime-time embarrassment.

Worse than embarrassing us, it looks like Obama’s engineering the end to America as we know it.

Wow, we just passed a bill out of the House that will force conscripted service on Americans and we get this useless post?

The world is ganging up against the Dollar and pushing for world currency, the UN just kicked it to the curb today and we are worried about DVD’s?

The MIAC report is exposed (days after we conspiracy kooks discovered and tried to warn the “conservatives”), a draconian report that targets law abiding militias, Libertarians, and Ron Paul supporters as domestic terrorists, and we worry about insulting Gordon Brown?

I love this place and dig some of the posts, but I see why we are in such trouble, we just don’t pay attention to the important things that are occurring right underneath our nose.

Wake Up America!

Mark Steyn on the DVD fiasco: He’d joked about this, not believing that the WH would be so clueless as to send the wrong format, but now he wonders what the British brand of payback will be:

I haven’t run into Gordon Brown in over a decade, but my memory of the last time I met him in a TV green room is of a glowering misanthropic type who enjoys nursing a grudge. What doesn’t go around (in the DVD player) comes around. When the President and his Teleprompter visit London for the G20 summit in a couple of weeks, it would be a tragedy were Barack Oprompta to rise for his big speech to find nothing but the words “Wrong Region” flashing on his screen (although I’m sure the Queen would be very polite and string along and make all the swells stand up and join the toast to “Ron Region”, whoever he is).

But don’t forget, folks: Somewhere in Texas a village has been reunited with its idiot, and we now have the whip-smartest administration of David Brooks’ lifetime.

INC on March 19, 2009 at 9:10 PM

taznar on March 19, 2009 at 8:15 PM

It’s worse. Many players will let you change region codes, but only a few times (usually three). The idea is that if you take your dvd player to a new country, you can reset its region code to match that of your new residence (the assumption: you aren’t taking your library with you). Once you have reached the change limit for a player, you cannot again change the region code — the current one is permanent.

On early players, there was a trace on the circuit board you could cut to allow an infinite number of region changes, but they’ve long ago wised up to that — the stuff is now in an ASIC so you can’t fool the player by messing with the circuit board; cutting traces now means bricking the player.

All this stuff was done in an era where DVD players were a few hundred dollars apiece. Now, with players hovering at the $30-50 range, you could buy and dedicate one for each region.

SassyDarlin on March 19, 2009 at 8:51 PM

The Georgia House voted against approving a resolution that would have honored President Barack Obama and praised him for being a politician with an “unimpeachable reputation for integrity, vision and passion.”

INC on March 19, 2009 at 9:12 PM

Shoulda got Brown some Blu-rays(along with a player in case he doesn’t have one). A lot of those are multi-region and the NTSC/PAL conversion is no longer an issue.

But it’s not like the Obama Administration knows anything about technology, right?

Doughboy on March 19, 2009 at 9:16 PM

It’s even better, according to Wikipedia:

In the United Kingdom, DVD players are legally required to be region 2.

That means that if Brown tries to overcome the region limitation, he’s breaking British law!

Some of us called it from the beginning. Obama is a filthy (corrupt) liar and his wife is a hard shrew who has no style or sense of her role- most of that coming from the fact that she hates white people. Their kids are “too cutesy black” to be taken seriously [ask the Washington Post fashion editor about that comment since she attacked John Roberts' kids as being too cutesy white]. This story sounds a bit fake because Gordon Brown is nearly blind. Totally in one eye and partially in the other .

Insiders have revealed that Brown’s memos are in huge print and triple spaced while his own handwriting is getting larger.

I don’t see him as a big movie watcher. More importantly for the caring, in touch folks in the White House:

A friend of the PM said: “You can’t understand Gordon if you don’t understand his fear that he could go blind at any moment.”

But Obama is so understanding. Maybe Brown should have ask The One to spit on the ground and make some mud for his eyes.

So if the Prime Minister of Great Britain wanted to clear the “wrong region” announcement off his screen, he needs to go purchase another player, one that specifically plays American formatted DVDs…

Brown, on the other hand, presented a rather more thoughtful gift to the American President in the form of a penholder carved from the timbers of an anti-slavery ship. The sister ship, in fact, of the one that was broken up and turned into the desk in the Oval Office.

Whether merely vacuous or openly disrespectful, Obama’s gift is foreboding. He appears to be truly out of his league in matters of foreign diplomacy.
