Video: Shep Smith goes nuclear on Barney Frank, Congress over AIG bonuses

A fiery palate cleanser from this afternoon’s Studio B. Note the ringing populist note on which it ends. Good enough for Glenn Beck, good enough for Shep!

Hurray for Shep!!!

You know, the guy has a lot of liberalism in him, but saying what he just said at this point in time is a GUTSY MOVE.

He just bounced up three notches on my admiration scale.

Well done sir!!!!!

Which tired argument? The one about teleprompters that apparently even liberals are picking up on now? Or the one about Chris Dodd that’s true?

amerpundit on March 18, 2009 at 4:46 PM

Senator Barack Obama received a $101,332 bonus from American International Group in the form of political contributions according to Opensecrets.org. The two biggest Congressional recipients of bonuses from the A.I.G. are – Senator Chris Dodd and Senator Barack Obama.

The A.I.G. Financial Products affiliate of A.I.G. gave out $136,928, the most of any AIG affiliate, in the 2008 cycle. I would note that A.I.G.’s financial products division is the unit that wrote trillions of dollars’ worth of credit-default swaps and “misjudged” the risk.

Let’s cut away to the Hot Air Headlines, from Politico.com:

http://dyn.politico.com/printstory.cfm?uuid=15B15E12-18FE-70B2-A8D0639CB535E27C

I’ve concluded that much of the conventional wisdom about Obama is wrong. Here are five of the biggest misconceptions:

***

2. Obama is a great communicator. Cut away the soaring rhetoric in his speeches, and the resulting policy statements are often vague, lawyerly and confusing. He is not plain-spoken: He parses his language so much that a casual listener will miss important caveats. That’s in part why he uses teleprompters for routine policy statements: He chooses his words carefully, relying heavily on ill-defined terms like “deficit reduction” (which means tax increases, rather than actual “savings”) and “combat troops” (as opposed to “all troops in harm’s way”).

***

4. Obama is smooth. Despite being deliberate, Obama is surprisingly gaffe-prone. Reporters on my e-mail lists last year know he consistently mispronounced, misnamed or altogether forgot where he was. (In one typical gaffe in Sioux Falls, S.D., he started his speech with an enthusiastic “Thank you, Sioux City!”) His geographic gaffes are not just at routine rallies but at major events, including the Democratic National Convention and his first address to Congress. Any politician occasionally misspeaks, but the frequency of Obama’s flubs is notable.

(emphasis mine)

Obama may speak better than Bush, but I’m not sure by what measure. Whatever the case, Obama ain’t much except in your eyes. But then he lost me when he considered Jeremiah no big deal and tried to convince me that Wright and Obama’s grandmother were morally equivalent. Sorry, that analogy never worked for me.

BuckeyeSam on March 18, 2009 at 4:47 PM

This guy really needed a teleprompter:

Heh, I never really watched Shep much, I just don’t usually like his tone. He always seems to be laughing at some inside joke that nobody else knows. This, however, was very good. He finally named names and seemed pretty pissed, at the right people for once too.

Mord on March 18, 2009 at 4:39 PM

I like Shep’s humor. Most of the time, people are idiots and deserve to be laughed. But then sometimes like today the laughter stops!!!

The reality is that all they are trying to do by harping on about these bonuses is to try and divert attention away from the fact that the financial system was bent over Congresses knee and raped up the ass by the likes of Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. As Shep said the Government caused the financial Crisis and it is they who must be held accountable for it. So yes let us have a truth commission but instead of making Corporate America the scape goat for this crisis lets investigate the real culprit for this mess The Federal Government and those elected officials who’s policy decisions enabled this to happen.

BS. Straw man argument. Most conservatives believe that AIG shouldn’t have been bailed out AT ALL! If AIG hadn’t been bailed out, they would have gone into bankruptcy and the bonuses wouldn’t have been paid… and AIG wouldn’t be used as a Democrat money laundering scheme for Europe.

Great fire, but not entirely accurate. Dodd did not “make” this happen. The bonuses are contractual and are not touchable- or are they?

And here’s what I am curious about- why was it necessary to add that paragraph at all?

Is there something we don’t know that would have allowed the unraveling of the contracts prior to the new law?

drjohn on March 18, 2009 at 5:16 PM

booter on March 18, 2009 at 5:01 PM

I agree with you, I would be just a shocked to hear Olberman go off on the democrats as I was to hear Shep do it, but it is a message that needs to be heard by more people. Thankfully Fox is by far the most watched cable news show in the country and the word seems to be getting out there that Democrats in congress are much more to blame for this mess than some fatcats on wallstreet who have to work with the rules that congress writes. Everyday Americans are REALLY pissed about these bonuses, and Shep pointed out that they should be even MORE pissed at congress because they not only enable this kind of activity, they had the power to stop it and decided not to at the last minute. Now they have the nerve to hold these stupid “fact finding” hearings and grill the very man they installed at AIG to clean up this mess.

Shep way to hit the mendacious hypocritical criminals on capitol hill…

Now I wish the likes of Hannity and Repubs who voted against these provisions would stop the class warfare. Calling the people at AIG “newly minted millionares”

January-March is HR musical chairs in NYC. In this case during March 2008, AIG gave contractual bonus guarantees to 73 people who represented over 50% of the contested bonus pool. I would suspect they are probably high value trader / sales and quant types who could have easily jumped ship for multi-year 7 figure contracts at that time. In fact the “bonuses” were contractual guarantees that they didn’t jump ship, they would make in 2008 what they made in 2007.

This was prudent managerial judgment, preventing a brain drain before any TARP money was received. The “bonuses” represent normal compensation levels for these employees.

I am not a Shepard Smith fan but he was telling the truth in this one. Go Shep!

Heh. You won’t see that kind of segment on any other “main stream” news outlet.

Obama may speak better than Bush, but I’m not sure by what measure.

I have an ex Air Force NCO working for me whose grammar is terrible. He’s also one of the most knowledgeable people I know about the system on which we work. And I’ve known some well spoken people who should know a lot more but don’t.

Having said that, the ex-AF guy’s grammar drives me nuts some times…:)
