Evan Bayh’s new gang targets Obama agenda; Update: Video added

posted at 10:22 am on March 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Republicans aren’t the only people growing disenchanted by Hope and Change through Incompetence, it seems.  Evan Bayh, who got passed over as Obama’s running mate, has formed a new Gang of 15 in the Senate, only this gang is exclusively Democrats.  They want to put some speed limits on Obama’s agenda:

There is rising doubt among Democrats — particularly moderates already concerned about the big costs and deficits called for in Obama’s budget — that either Obama or Washington have enough bandwidth this year to stimulate the economy, overhaul the failed financial sector and move on to a far-reaching domestic agenda.

“From the standpoint of the Congress, there’s only so much that we can absorb and do at one time,” Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), the chairman of the Appropriations Committee, told POLITICO Tuesday. “To maintain a schedule like the one we’ve got at this moment, throughout the year, I don’t know if it will be healthy.”

Democrats’ comments were muted, with few directly criticizing Obama for being too ambitious. But several lawmakers made clear that they have trouble with Obama’s logic that deep economic troubles make it more urgent, not less, to take on expensive projects such as health care and education reform.

“Everybody has to bring something to the table,” said Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, a leader of a 15-member caucus of conservative and centrist Democrats. “That doesn’t mean that you have to postpone your aspirations forever. But until we’re through this crisis and growth has resumed, there’s going to be some belt-tightening that’s necessary.”

These doubts reflect conflicting currents in Obama’s political circumstances just 60 days into his administration.

Bayh launched this effort on MS-NBC’s Morning Joe program this morning, telling viewers that concerns have risen about the direction of the administration already.  Coming from Obama’s own party, that’s remarkable in a couple of ways.  First, Democrats have near-total control already of the process, and have already found enough Republicans to get around any procedural roadblocks.  They don’t need to do any outreach to the Republicans or centrists in order to get their agenda through Congress.

Even more surprising is the timing.  The media has engaged in a little self-flaggelation for not giving Obama the supposedly traditional 100 days to demonstrate competence and fully shape the agenda.  Now, even Obama’s own party has called off the honeymoon.  Bayh and his fellow gang members have seen enough already to set off the alarm bells.

This will make it much more difficult for Obama to sell himself as a moderate, both in the midterms and in 2012.  When one’s own party has to have its moderates differentiate themselves from White House policy, it makes the President look extremist and intemperate.  Bayh will also force the media to cover that angle, where (as with the Hamilton appointment) they might prefer to parrot the administration’s self-congratulatory messages of their own moderation.

Perhaps Obama should have selected Bayh for his running mate after all.  It didn’t make a difference in the last election, but it might make a difference in the next.

Update: Here’s the Morning Joe video:

Try to catch all the Mafia references. Dead fishes, Witness Protection Programs, body bags … is this the White House, or a compound on Lake Tahoe?

This may be the last hope we have until the 2010 elections. The GOP should get Conservative Libertarians to talk to the Moderate Democrats, they will be able to talk sense to them.

You’re not. But we need to keep dreaming unless more of Obama’s countless idiotic acts seep out to the general public’s attention. If the MSM keeps his antics under wraps, we will have more Dems in two years and more Obama in four.

+1

Libertarians will have the easiest time appealing to moderate dems. They simply clash on less issues than your typical “one of us” “real american” conservatives. The entire libertarian message can resonate with democrats who vote the way they do because they feel republicans go out of their way to use and grow government to serve corporate interests. there are plenty of people who voted democrat in the last election (myself included) that did so not in a total embrace of hard liberalism, but because of the aforementioned feelings on the direction of the republican party.

Swing district/swing state Democrats remember 1994, while people like Pelosi and the other House and Senate committee leaders who are in safe seats just remember 1994 as the year all those stupid voters took control away from them just when they finally had both Congress and the presidency under their control for the first time since the halcyon years of James Earl Carter.

Obama’s a weak leader because he’s always hedged on taking any strong positions in order to get elected. And since his elections have until now been liberal Democratic enclaves, he’s always tagged along with the powers that be at the time. Unfortunately for Barack, tagging along with Nancy, Harry, Barney, Teddy and Charlies I and II from New York is not what swing voters were casting their ballots for back in November, and the Democrats in Red States or the red part of Blue States know that.

They don’t want a repeat of ’94, but the Obama folks know Clinton was able to throw the car in reverse in ’95 and get re-elected. So odds are they’re not going to either have the desire or enough fear for their own jobs to cross the party’s left wing, even if they wanted to, before the 2010 midterms.

Vashta.Nerada on March 18, 2009 at 10:27 AM

I agree. The Blue Dogs could be key. I attended a reception for my Blue Dog representative a few weeks ago and I’m convinced he KNOWS he won’t stand a chance in 2010 if he carrys Obama’s water. He’s pro-gun, pro-life, and wants a balanced budget. I suspect many of the Blue Dogs hold similar views, particularly the Southern ones. Surely the Republicans can work with them.

Emanuel and Pelosi can only pull that stunt off so long as the filthy liar has coattails. Moderate Democrats are facing huge backlash from the filthy liar’s agenda. As the liar’s popularity wanes (tempers really to a more realistic level) his ability to get unquestioning and uncritical support from Congress will be more difficult.

I get the feeling he wonders how can we, as mere American citizens, could possibly understand all his “brilliant” thinking and plan to save us all?? *rolling my eyes*

I saw Bayh announce this on Morning Joe. At least two in the thread are skeptical, and maybe so. But Bayh did say that 12 are coming forward publicly (he rattled off a number of them), but he added that three of them weren’t publicly coming forward, for whatever reason. This seems to me that a few either don’t want to cross the administration or they don’t want to cross a liberal constituency. The former makes more sense to me.

Whatever the case, this plus the outrage over the lack of transparency over the AIG bonuses are likely the only things that will keep conservatives in the game to shut the door on some Obama nonsense in the next two years.

I really can’t see any more bailouts until excrutiating analysis is made of any future legislation. The GOP should be screaming about this.

BuckeyeSam on March 18, 2009 at 10:58 AM

jon1979 makes an important point. Obama and his congressional democratic counterparts have different political goals right now. Obama is basically willing to throw under the bus the house and senate dem caucuses in order to push through his agenda. He know he still has time to kiss-and-make-up with the public between Nov. 2010 and Nov. 2012. House Dems in particular know that they will catch the backlash against Obama’s agenda much earlier than Obama will and realize he’s selling them out.

Robert_Paulson on March 18, 2009 at 10:58 AM

rockmom on March 18, 2009 at 10:37 AM

I agree. I emailed Richard Shelby’s office last week and politely informed him that he was wrong for not only voting for the $410 billion spending bill, but for taking the opportunity to throw $104 million for Alabama.

These people, Republican and Democrat alike, have been allowed to get comfortable with wasting money that isn’t theirs. I heard Dodd complaining about the bonuses yesterday. He complained that it was ‘federal money’ going for those bonuses. No it wasn’t!! That was OUR money.

These people we’ve elected have got to be shown by the voters that we’re watching their every move now, and they’re not ging to get away with the crap they’ve been doing anymore!

IMO, what this all means is that Reid is losing control of the senate. That can stall any legislation. The response should be to now focus on the house, and since Pelosi won’t be cowed in a similar fashion, conservatives need to pressure blue dogs to work with the GOP instead of her.

Mitch McConnell and the Republicans need to meet with Evan Bayh and find out who are the other members of his “Gang of 15″ (other than Inouye, who was a member of McCain’s Gang of 14 in 2005), and what they want.

Obviously, these “centrist” Democrats won’t agree with Republicans on everything, but if the “Gang of 15″ is concerned about over-spending, Republicans might be able to convince them to join filibusters until the price tag is brought down to a reasonable level, which could slow down Obama’s rush toward socialism.

Since the minority party has very little power in the House, Republicans can blame Pelosi for everything that goes wrong there, and by forming a bipartisan coalition of Republicans and “centrist” Democrats in the Senate, can paint themselves as the party of fiscal responsibility for the 2010 elections.

Evan Bayh’s initiative could be an opportunity for Republicans, if they play their cards right. Which is a big IF these days.

Steve Z on March 18, 2009 at 11:28 AM

As a Hoosier, I agree completely. He’s starting to see his political career flash before his eyes. But whatever the reason, I’m glad he’s making a stand.

Oink on March 18, 2009

I’m also a Hoosier and have made many phone calls to both Evan Bayh’s DC and Indianapolis offices, complaining loudly of liberal excesses.

Yesterday I made a similar call and thanked him for standing up and slowing the crap down. I thought the guy on the other end wet himself and immediately asked for my name and adress. On previous calls I’ve gotten an, “uh, thanks for your input”.

my point being, it is worth a call to 202.224.5623 to give him some support.

Onager on March 18, 2009 at 11:29 AM

I’m sure if he gets re-elected he’ll be back to being a far-leftist since he won’t have to face the voters for 6 years.

gsherin on March 18, 2009 at 11:30 AM

It’s pure politics. CYA politics. Don’t be fooled.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on March 18, 2009 at 10:29 AM

Yeah but its pure politics in the sense that Evan Bayh is putting his own personal political ambitions ahead of his party’s. T’is great for us!!

Zetterson on March 18, 2009 at 11:30 AM

Reid will cut them off to quiet them.

albill on March 18, 2009 at 11:33 AM

Sanity, (and job preservation) finally allowing some Democrats to come to their senses. Who’d a thunk it?

Rovin on March 18, 2009 at 10:30 AM

Somebody want to go through and find out how many of the 15 are up for re-election next year? This isn’t a revolt; it’s just a smoke screen.

The economy is going to be tanking a lot worse next year than it is this year. The ONLY issue that will matter in every election is who voted for or against the Socialized Bailout program.

Quick question: Has Steele shown ANY sign yet that he’ll be able to support candidates in nearly every contested election next year? Because that’s what we’re going to need.

logis on March 18, 2009 at 11:43 AM

The “moderate democrats” have much to prove for me to be in awe of the “mavericky” move to go against Obama. They are looking out for their own re-election bids in 2010 and know that we conservatives are coming after them and we’ll kick them out of office. Bayh did go against the Omnibus but not the porkulus. He also vote for DC representation, S-Chip, and other liberal items. He has a lot to prove.

I wonder what Obama’s teleprompter will say about this insubordination from his democrat colleagues.

jencab on March 18, 2009 at 11:44 AM

All Evan Bayh is trying to accomplish is to place some room between himself and Da Bama before the fatal lightning strike hits.

Anyone think conservativism is dead now? :oP

DannoJyd on March 18, 2009 at 11:45 AM

It’s starting to hit the fan and Democrats don’t want to stink.

drjohn on March 18, 2009 at 11:50 AM

DannoJyd

I agree. Evan Bayh is a calculating opportunist who learned well from his daddy the “game” of politics. Trust him at your peril.

If HA posters are a legitimate sampling, it appears all the money is going to Palin’s PAC. Perhaps she can loan him some to tide him over till he gets his office redecorations finished.:)

I’m thinking ‘Anchorman’- you know, how Ron Burgundy reads everything – everything he sees in the teleprompter.

Oh what fun could be had…

They had better put the “brakes” on this Marxist idiot before he completely destroys the Republic and causes chaos and riots.

A wise man/woman would be prepared in the event it comes to that, and it may yet.

Viper1 on March 18, 2009 at 12:09 PM

It is time for the GOP to start collecting blue dogs to form a governing coalition.

Surely the Republicans can work with them.

flyfisher on March 18, 2009 at 10:49 AM

I disagree. They still caucus with the Dhimmicrats, which means they need to switch parties, or be defeated in 2010. Work with them for now, sure, but I wouldn’t support them for re-election. They know the differernce between the Dhims and the Reps, and they have chosen sides.

iurockhead on March 18, 2009 at 12:18 PM

Obama chooses Biden over Bayh? What a child.

RobCon on March 18, 2009 at 10:55 AM

Depsite BHO’s claim that he wasn’t going to surround himself with “yes men,” that’s exacly what he did with Biden. I don’t think he’s ever had an original thought in his life. He’s simply a voice-activated telemprompter-activated parrot.

Roc on March 18, 2009 at 12:19 PM

Breaking news: getalife is awake and has fired up the keyboard. Between now and her shift later today, counting the french fries going into the basket, she can explain this potential revolt against her Beloved Leader.

Obviously somebody left the gate open and the ingrates must be pushed back into the corral. Any bets on how many of this gang of 15 will disappear for a bit while they attend the re-education camp?

Yoop on March 18, 2009 at 12:25 PM

Here we go with the “incompetent” BS again.

nottakingsides on March 18, 2009 at 12:26 PM

I hope this attempt fails miserably. I’m so sick of these assholes lying to people about how they care about the little guy. All they care about is growing government as much as possible to empower themselves and buy votes.

gsherin on March 18, 2009 at 12:26 PM

iurockhead on March 18, 2009 at 12:18 PM

That’s what I meant – the governing coalition I spoke of would be setting the agenda until January of 2011. Barry won’t be in charge.

Vashta.Nerada on March 18, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Bayh is too late. I’m glad that Obama has suceeded.

Da Bama has sucessfully proven, beyond any reasonable doubt, that the Democrat Party stands as the symbol of greed and corruption. Try as many may, they cannot blame the AIG, Freddie/Fannie, or the porkulus bills on anyone except for themselves. All they can do is scream, Bush! Rush Limbaugh!

Hey! You democrat socialist America haters. Do you know what the $101,332 dollars which Obama Received from AIG is really worth today? It is worth TRILLIONS to the GOP as they just cannot buy advertising like this for any price.

Tea Parties through 2010, here we come!!!

DannoJyd on March 18, 2009 at 12:32 PM

OMG, he is speaking without a teleprompter to shoot that silly argument down.

Sell it President.

DannoJyd on March 18, 2009 at 11:59 AM

Of course anyone with half a lick of sense (even some Democrats) knows full well that we can’t spend our way out of debt or tax ourselves into prosperity.

Senators usually assume they can get away with anything as long as they have at least two years ’till they’re up for re-election.

Bahy is back-pedalling right now. He craves power as desperately as any politician does (even most Republicans.) He doesn’t want to do anything to actually impede Obama; but he and the other Democrat Senators running for re-election in 2010 are going to want a wall of rhetoric to hide behind.

I’m only a little surprised that Spector isn’t trying to glom on. That guy must think he’s bulletproof.

getalife on March 18, 2009 at 12:38 PM

Too funny!!! The corner of the teleprompter was visible near the top of that short hedge.

His lips are moving: he’s lying. “Shareholders and board members must hold executives responsible.” Well, Barry, the voters are actually beginning to hold YOU responsible.

Yoop on March 18, 2009 at 12:44 PM

Like I said on earlier threads these are the people Pelosi, Reid and Obama are worried about–Dems crossing over because proposed legislation is so revolting that even some Dems can’t stomach it.

They are pushing to get around the filibuster, if necessary, because of the Bayh’s of the world not because of Snowe, Collins and Specter folks.
