Gulp: RNC fundraising expected to be way off in February
posted at 7:15 pm on March 17, 2009 by Allahpundit
Suddenly that Bowflex machine looks less defensible than I thought. In fairness, the RNC was in transition last month while Steele started putting his people in place so there’s no way yet to compare his organization to Mike Duncan’s RNC running on all cylinders.
But even so, the ice is getting thinner.
The RNC has consistently outraised the Democratic National Committee on a month-by-month basis. Observers say that streak is likely to end this month.
New RNC Chairman Michael Steele has committed gaffes that may embarrass his party in the short term, but Republican insiders say they are worried several of his actions will hit a fundraising trifecta: wounding party efforts to attract big donors, small donors and those who give on the Internet…
Even now, as Steele enters his seventh week as chairman, the RNC has no finance director, and several staffers in the finance division were among those who got the ax during the course of Steele’s top-to-bottom review of RNC operations…
The lack of a fundraising staff with institutional knowledge and relationships with key donors will affect the party’s big-dollar donations, observers said. Larger donors account for between 20 and 30 percent of the party’s donations, but without a stable of long-term professional fundraisers, that number could drop off…
Fundraisers and party insiders also repeatedly pointed to the departure of Cyrus Krohn, perhaps the most widely respected technology specialist in the Republican Party.
Krohn, a former Yahoo! and Microsoft software guru whose signing-on at the RNC was hailed as a major coup, left the committee in early March after Steele’s team tried to revamp the party’s Internet operations.
Krohn’s departure will hamper the party’s Internet fundraising efforts, an area in which they already trailed Democrats. Internet fundraising numbers rose throughout 2008, according to those involved in the effort, but now former officials say the party will have to start from square one.
He can spin this for the time being — short month, deepening recession, etc. — but if fundraising’s down again in March and the Dems hold Gillibrand’s old seat in the NY-20 special election despite the money the RNC’s dumping in there, confidence in Steele will reach Geithnerian levels. Exit question: Second look at Norm Coleman?

I’m not sure I buy it. Didn’t Obama “insiders” say the same thing right before Obama reported massive hauls? It sent right wing strategists into publicly second-guessing Obama’s decision not to accept public funds.
Not saying it’ll be great and it probably won’t, but if you tell people it’s horrible, and it’s only a little off, you end up looking like you outperformed expectations.

Michael Steel: Fundraising? I’m expected to do fundraising, too? Dayum!
AubieJon on March 17, 2009 at 7:21 PM
All my money goes to SarahPAC. My friends and family are doing the same. That’s hundreds of dollars missing for the RNC.
I’m sure others are doing the same.

How many times do I have to say it…. will give to SarahPAC until Steele and the RNC show me something worth giving to. And it’s not Bowflex machines and lame TV appearances.
The SarahPAC numbers are going to blow people away when they come out next month. Steele is on thin ice…
Hey Allah, wasn’t it just yesterday you were touting Palin as the RNC chair? Are we back to Coleman now? Don’t think that will work out too well. How about we go back to Ken Blackwell? He was my first and only choice.

Conservatives were right about the bailout, right about the socialist teleprompter and right for America. We just need some congress critters to follow.

No surprise. It’s not Steele, it’s the RINOs. I’ve been sending back my RNC donation requests with notes that all my donation budget goes to SarahPAC – unless and until they get the RINOs in line, then they might get a cut.
I want to see blood on the floor of the Congress. Then I’ll be convinced that the GOP deserves some of my jack.

Great! I can just see the MSM spin: “Those evil Republicans! They won’t give to a brotha’! We knew it all along.”
I have been donating exclusively to SarahPAC too but that’s because I’m a Sarah Palin supporter. It will be interesting to see if Michael and Sarah can work out a deal. I know Michael is a fan of Sarah’s.

Here’s the part that sucks: Obama is performing miserably and doing the opposite of his promises. The Dems have become the epitome of hypocrisy with accusing AIG of wasting taxpayers money, yet the Dems porked the taxpayers on the stim bill.
If there was ever a time for the Republicans to gain some political traction, NOW IS THAT TIME. Yet we have Steele running amok and derailing the GOP. Time for a regime change.

I mean come on, we’re all just a bunch of Nazi party members over here on the right, Mr. Steele, at least you were nodding in the affirmative when that claim was made.
Call me when you’re ready to defend people like me instead of agreeing that I’m some sort of fascist killer, I might be willing to open my wallet if you do.

If Steele gets fired I have maintained it has nothing to do with the color black; it’s all about the color green: the color of money.
Here’s what Dick Cheney said when asked about Rush Limbaugh!
” I think Rush is a good man. Rush is a good friend. I love him. I think he does great work and has for years.”
Do you think if Steele had said similar words that he might not be in trouble and that SarahPAC would not be as flush as it is apparently now?

If you think the in-fighting is only at the national level, think again. The Catawba County, NC convention usually has less than 70 delegates. This year the leadership is trying everything they can to hold their seats. There were 170 delegates let in and 200+ were denied rightful delegate status and turned away. The Republican party needs some cleaning from the inside out and bottom to top. See the Republicans eating their own…

This may not apply here, but donations to everything are down. As a volunteer, I help raise funds for a couple of charities, and everyone’s hurting.
Last year, I gave a huge amount to the RNC, and also to the NRSC and NRCC, and to various candidates.
I’m tapped out. My portfolio is in the toilet. I’ve cut back temporarily on my usual amount of charitable giving. Frankly, I’m hunkering down, waiting to see what this madman we’ve put in charge of our country is going to do to my financial future. Maybe if I start seeing signs of sanity on the part of the government, I’ll start opening the wallet again, but I’m just too scared to now.

technopeasant on March 17, 2009 at 8:03 PM
Steele’s big mistake is something I learned long ago from a successful businessman:
Your most important customer is your first customer.
I had thought that the most important customers were those I didn’t have yet. That’s what Steele thought he would do. In fact, that’s what most of the GOP players in Washington think they should do.
But if they create enthusiasm among the base (the first customer), then the first customers will bring their friends into it. A prairie fire of passion.
But Steele thought he alone would attract those who weren’t customers. And he forgot his first customers in doing so. And now he has no customers.
Rookie capitalist. Like I was at 22.

I was called by the RNC for money and the operator on the phone could barely speak proper English, she made a very poor impression on me and I declined. I don’t think Steele knows what he is doing. He seemed like he wanted to be a media star and then he screwed that up. That is not his job anyway, he should be working behind the scenes and raising money. He should go.

I got fed up with the “progressive Republicans” running the party into the ground a long time ago. I used to be a regular contributor but that ended with the rise of “compassionate conservativism”.
The Republican party is dead to me and will be until asshats like McCain and Steele are gone.

That also seems to happen when you call them bigots and tell them to shut up over a policy disagreement.
I’ve been hanging up on the RNC all month during fund raising calls. I have 2 very simple conditions. When John McCain and Lindsay Grahamnesty no longer hold office as Republicans, I’ll start donating again. Until then, I’m buying giant foam cowboy hats and bubble gum cards with my money.

I admit I’m very disappointed at Steele’s performance so far, but hell, if we keep kneecapping people just to avoid the appearance of weakness, or lacking in principle, or whatever so-called ‘higher standard’ we set for ourselves, then there’s no way we’ll ever find traction to recover from past losses.
Why isn’t it possible for Conservatives to shoot for maintaining high standards while at the same time training our guns on the actual enemy? Haven’t we learned yet how to walk and chew gum simultaneously?

So with all the work Steele has to do, his priority is following up on an ad that plays on narcissism to sell an expensive machine. Yes, buy this — your abs will pop out and the hair will fall off your chest, doh!
Send the rest to the RNC, and we’ll take care of the hair on your head, doh!

Yea, I’m going to send my money to the RNC to support more RINO’s! OK! Let’s see…you just keep kicking me in the nads, and I will just keep writing you checks. Makes sense to me!
Not one penny from my cold dead hands to the RNC or the GOP until they are cleansed of RINO’s and become a party of the people again! If they wish to remain a party of the “Washington Big’s” use their money…you shall have not one cent of mine! sarahPAC shall get all of mine! And if you don’t like my position…I don’t care! This is America and I get to decide what I think and do and NOBODY can do a damn thing about it!

That’s the best news I’ve heard in a long time about the RNC. I stopes contributing when I realized they would use it to fund the likes of Arlen Specter. It’s just as easy to donate online to various ‘conservative’ candidates directly than go through the Democrat Lite RNC. At least then I know it’s $$$ well spent.

There are… lessee, now… [::counting::]… two… three… seven… ten… twelve… NINETEEN individual posters in this very thread, explicitly stating how they’re doing precisely that, via SarahPAC.
Or do political donations from conservative voters only “count” if and when they’re addressed to “RNC, c/o Michael Steele”…?
