Flashback video: Obama on “sacred trust”

posted at 2:05 pm on March 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Our friend Jim Geraghty reminds us that all of Barack Obama’s pledges come with expiration dates — all of them.  Wounded veterans have now discovered this in a most unpleasant way.  Barack Obama wants to shove off the cost of medical care for injuries and illnesses sustained in combat in order to find $560 million in fresh revenue streams.  This amounts to just over half of what Obama just gave Hamas in Gaza to rebuild after their disastrous war with Israel this winter, and about 1/300th of what the government gave AIG in a bailout.

Obama sang a much different tune during the campaign.  In June 2008, Obama appeared at a Sioux Falls pancake breakfast to lambaste the Bush administration and John McCain for opposing Jim Webb’s GI Bill.  During that speech, given from a rostrum with the slogan “A Sacred Trust — Support Our Veterans”, Obama had this to say about caring for our wounded once back at home:

We all know that the sacred trust does not end when the uniform comes off.  That’s why it’s time to build a 21st-century VA.  No more red tape.  It’s time to give every service member electronic copies of their medical records and service records upon discharge so that they can immediately get the services that they’ve earned.  No more shortfalls.  We’ll fully fund VA health care.  No more delays.  We’ll pass on-time budgets.  No more means testing.  It’s time to allow every veteran into the VA system.

How can Obama reconcile that with this?

Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki confirmed Tuesday that the Obama administration is considering a controversial plan to make veterans pay for treatment of service-related injuries with private insurance. …

No official proposal to create such a program has been announced publicly, but veterans groups wrote a pre-emptive letter last week to President Obama voicing their opposition to the idea after hearing the plan was under consideration.

The groups also cited an increase in “third-party collections” estimated in the 2010 budget proposal — something they said could be achieved only if the Veterans Administration started billing for service-related injuries.

Asked about the proposal, Shinseki said it was under “consideration.”

“A final decision hasn’t been made yet,” he said.

It’s just another expiration date, as American Legion Commander David Rehbein discovered yesterday.

“Sacred trust”?  Words.  Just words.

I learned my lesson the hard way – I was watching a speech, and yelled out “you filthy liar!” at the tv. A few days later, my daughter reports that she had a ‘talk’ with the teacher about how it’s wrong to call others a “filthy liar,” especially if said person is our President. I choke down my verbal insults now, at least when the kids are around! : )

Anna on March 17, 2009 at 2:34 PM

you should not. You shouold tell your daughter everyday the same thing. Being called a filthy liar is not wrong if it is the truth. yes it is an insult but it is time that our children as well as our adults call a liar a liar.

Two-faced liar. Worst. President. Ever.

All of the Bush haters are having orgasms over this guy just beause he is the opposite – which is why America will tank under him if he’s not stood up to.

I would guess that Obama’s staff is sending out feelers on this topic to see how it would go over before making a formal announcement. The feelers will not (and are not) going to do well, and it will never become a formal proposal (i.e., one that Obama himself speeks of publically).

WashJeff on March 17, 2009 at 2:33 PM

Many people here, including many vets, feel the same way. Iit’ll never pass, it’s just a trial balloon, etc. The truth is, it’s in his budget proposal. Obama’s staff has refused to take it OFF the table, and Obama himself confirmed details of the plan to the head of the American Legion today in a face to face meeting.

It’ll be tucked away in some corner of the budget, which will be passed without reading, just like the stimulus bill. And even if there’s opposition, the Dems will claim that we can’t jeapordize the operations of the entire government over 1 tiny matter like this.

This is beyond belief. How can we make the veterans pay for injuries incurred protecting us? There are no words to describe this.

I think lack of honor and complete disrespect for the men and women who protect our country are responsible for this STUPID idea.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on March 17, 2009 at 2:45 PM

The more I hear about this potential POS legislation, the more furious I become. My dad fought in WWII and I have friends who served/serve in Viet Nam and Iraq. I believe that this is one particular Obama-idea which the entire country will act against. Does anyone know if there is a petition circulating against it that we can sign, and then send to our family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, acquaintances, strangers on the street, and frankly, many of the liberals that I know … ? If we could get 25-30 million signatures or so, I’m betting The One, with his addiction to adulation, might actually take notice …

If you’re going to be a moron, and attack the armed forces for defending our nation, you attack the leaders. You do not bloody well attack the ones who have sacrificed their bodies in providing that service!

This proves to me The One has absolutely no moral compass. To even consider this idea borders on the criminal.

I cannot begin to express the degree of my outrage …

Remember, Obama hates everything about America that isn’t Black or a loafer. If he gave a hoot about working middle class people, he wouldn’t have insulted them by giving the loafers a pay raise.

If he is dumb enough to go after the second ammendment rights, he will be toast. There are millions of Blacks in America that if they had to choose between Obama and their guns, they would $hitcan Obama. It would be a buzz saw for him, and you wouldn’t be able to determine which saw tooth finished him off.

What a wonderful idea. Piss off millions of combat trained vets and our brothers in arms. Does this lop know who flies him around? I wonder just how long it will take the American people or those who want to retain their freedom to take up arms and throw these bastards out on their ears?

jukin on March 17, 2009 at 2:47 PM

Obama supporters will say that all of Obama’s promises in Souix Falls would be met if we had univesal health care. He is not promising, specifically, to take care of the vets, you see. Rather he is promising that the vets will be take care of when the government is taking care of everybody.

And all that “sacred trust” BS. It’s not really a lie if everybody knows you’re lying

gridlock2 on March 17, 2009 at 2:48 PM

Even in that eventuality, consider the future implications.(I know, Obama doesn’t, why should we?). Insurance companies will begin screening out folks who volunteer for service in the National Guard or reserves, to avoid the expensive treatment of war injuries. At best, they’ll raise rates on those part-time volunteers. At worst, they’ll deny coverage to folks likely to see action.

What sort of incentive to join the NG is losing your health coverage? A negative one.

True, but there’s a difference in yelling out insults to the telly, and sitting down with my kids and explaining why we do not trust Obama (which I’ve done, several times). That way, she knows he lies, and it’s not going to come back and bite me in the ass (like my daughter hurling invectives in class or at her parents).

I’m just advocating not acting irrational and crazy at the tv in front of young impressionable children – hilarity does not always ensue! ;)

Anna on March 17, 2009 at 2:52 PM

The DoD already does this at least in part. If a vet has private insurance, they are supposed to let the DoD know so care received can be billed first to the private insurance carrier. Are they talking about billing all charges to private insurance?

What isn’t being said, but is implied, is that they are proposing to make vets get private insurance, and cutting the benefits we should get – free of charge. That is where this administration is wanting to go on this. You can look for the same thing for the budgets of the active duty forces.

This administration is going to do what the Clintons did in the early 90′s, recoup their cost overuns on the back of the military. In this case though, the deficits are so large, there is no way they can get back any real “savings”.

Another thought: I thought we were all headed towards “universal” or free gubmint health care? If we get our “gubmint” health care, then how are we going to bill anything to private carriers? I thought “private” was bad, government good?

Is the President now telling us we should go out and get private insurance? Are vets the only ones who need to worry about this or are we going to start charging illegal aliens for their health care too?

Down here in Texas, every Black person I know owns firearms, and they enjoy shooting them. The gun shows are full of Blacks, and they obviously know what they are doing. For Obama to mess wioth gun rights, he would be shooting himself in the foot in a huge way.

Contrary to popular beliefs, there is a limit to the patience Blacks have with other blacks that screw up.

So, your child reported you to her teacher? You understand, this is EXACTLY what the Socialists want to have happen. In the Soviet Union and in Communist China … they were called Young Pioneers and Little Octobrists. In Nazi Germany, they were called the Hitler Youth.

Socialism always targets the children. And reporting parents is the approved method.

The good thing is that most Democrats in Congress won’t go along with this, or they’ll get killed in the 2010 elections. And if Dear POS tries to cancel elections, citing “emergency”, well it won’t work if he doesn’t have the military on his side.

So let’s see, if you’re sitting on your fat behind, The Onion will send you new welfare checks, but if you’ve bled for your country all you get is a bill.

John McCain is nothing but flaws. Open primaries allowed Dem crossovers, and multiple poor candidates split the votes, allowing the most moderate RINO to barely squeak ahead… favored by liberal media, as the weak candidate for their “One”.

I’m a conservative. Yet I voted for Palin. (I was hoping for a Harrison scenario.)

McCain’s only glimmer of hope was as a fiscal conservative… but that has now been shown to be a false hope as he left his campaign to… fall in line and vote for TARP, like everyone else.

“When you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.”

This is the thing that’s always confused me about western collectivists: They want to control the world, but they disarm THEMSELVES before they do the rest of the population.

That has never worked. Sure, they’re trying to set up that Obama Youth paramilitary thing. They’re high on rage but low on organization, and no amount of the former will make up for a complete absence of the latter.

No, this happened during Black History Month, when the class was discussing the President. They were asked what they thought of him, and my daughter said my words, that he’s a filthy liar. I love her, but at the time she could not back up this claim, so the teacher took her aside and admonished my daughter for calling the President a liar – saying something along the lines of ‘that’s rude, we don’t talk that way about others.’

In the end, my daughter and I decided that at this time, it’s easier just not to talk about Obama at school – at home, though, he’s fair game.

Anna on March 17, 2009 at 3:23 PM

Of course, there is another explanation for this. Private insurance companies are not going to insure military personel…the risk is too great. So that means less re-enlistments, and fewer recruits. No one will joinif they know they will be stuck with the cost of treating potential injuries. Result…a weakened military. Much easier to bring about a “global government” if the U.S. has a weaker military. Fits a pattern, doesn’t it? Why staff Treasury or get a banking plan out there if you want to weaken the economy? Just spend like crazy. Why maintain traditional national allies if that is a barrier to a global government…looks more and more like that is Obama’s goal in keeping with the plan Soros charged him with

Anna, I understand. But, from my perspective, I see a teacher who has taken a child aside, interrogated her as to where she heard such a term, found out that it came from her parent and advised your child that her parent was wrong and that she, as her teacher, knew better than her mother.

This will, also, happen in later years, when politics and the 1st and 2nd Amendments to the Constitution are discussed. Your child WILL BE CORRECTED, should she ever proclaim anything said by you, to her, that her teacher disagrees with.

This is just the beginning of an attempt to disassociate your daughter, from you, and replace your guidance with that of the teacher’s.

There will be outrage after outrage as President Xerxes forces us downward. It will have to get much worse for all before the country can be made right again. Like some of you, I am VERY ANGRY at what this vile and dishonorable puke is doing to our nation.

Know that anger to the right degree, at the right time, and with the right person is a tool we can use to reclaim the ship. I hope that this idiot an all his supporters get all they desire times ten. Make it as awful as it can be. Slowly the good and decent people will make the difference. The worse he does the better it will be for all of us later. Even now in small ways you see the emergence of an organized resistance group forming. I can feel it slowly gaining momentum. It will take time and it will be painful as it slowly dawns on people that the heaven that President Xerxes promises here in America, truly becomes a hell. Even useful tools like getalife and DTMH will renounce this joker in due time.

We have to stay strong and look for opportunities to resist in constructive and meaningful ways. Conservative minded people are not terribly good at organizing or demonstrating because we fear being labeled. I tell you that it is your decency and fairness that they are counting on to roll over you. I don’t have the answer and I am not sure how I can help defeat this scourge but I am out here and I am looking. Blogs like Hot Air are a start.

I’ve got to correct Geraghty (and Ed) on the notion of “promises with expiration dates.”

Milk has an expiration date, for instance, but I’d consume the product until the arrival of this date.

Promises of the current president, however, have never been safe for consumption. On a scale of trustworthiness, I would say they range from disingenuous to dishonest. Geraghty is giving Obama credit for being at least opportunistic, which is itself a stretch.

Our president is apparently attempting to prove the old addage that you can only tell when a lawyer is speaking lies when you see his lips moving.

And his supporters in this country, lovestruck as they are, prefer to sit back and sing “Tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies . . . .”

Scared or prudent? I know it is a fine line between prudent and wacky. I have crossed that line I believe. I have socked away extra .223 and 40 Cal myself. I also put in a 20×20 garden in my backyard this year. I helped the ecomony with my huge seed and plant purchase from Burpee’s.

Why have I done these things? I can’t give you a linear thought process on that. It is just a gut feeling I have that. If I am wrong, nothing happens except that I have some fresh produce for the picking, extra boxes of ammo and my wife thinking I am some kind of survival nut.

I would, for the sake of your daughter, give the teacher the benefit of the doubt in that she doesn’t want the kids to start calling each other names. She may be an Obama supporter or not, but she is correct that in a school setting, that should not be allowed regardless of who is The President. Just file it away for future reference for when there is a change in the White House. ;-)

Keep training her correctly at home with facts, not name calling; expose her to the news, current events, history, politics, civics at a level she can understand as she grows, and one day, when she’s in her high school Environment class and the teacher says that the “science” in Al Gore’s documentary is 100% correct, well, then, she will respectfully be able to tear apart that “science” with facts. :-) That’s what my son did.

Now that he’s 19 and in the USAF he knows what he stands for and stands up for it. He also “knows” exactly the true nature of his CIC.

Investors now favor Republicans by a 46% to 36% margin, while non-investors would vote Democratic by a 45% to 33% margin.

The mission, and this admin. chose to accept it, keep the voting masses in the non-investor category.

when will most of the idiots that voted for him wake up and realize what a complete jerk off this man is? when? i understand they are stupid, but come on already…..
Ghoul aid on March 17, 2009 at 2:43 PM

He was a liar before the elections and they still voted for him. I doubt most of the Obots would ever wake up. There’s a great short story by the the Russian author Daniil Kharms (From his book Incidences):

Semyon Semyonovich Obot, with his glasses on, looks at a pine tree and he sees: in the pine tree sits a peasant Obama showing him his fist.

Semyon Semyonovich Obot, with his glasses off, looks at the pine tree and sees that there is no one sitting in the pine tree.

Semyon Semyonovich Obot, with his glasses on, looks at a pine tree and again sees that in the pine tree sits a peasant Obama showing him his fist.

Semyon Semyonovich Obot, with his glasses off, again sees that there is no one sitting in the pine tree.

Semyon Semyonovich Obot, with his glasses on again, looks at a pine tree and again sees that in the pine tree sits a peasant Obama showing him his fist.

Semyon Semyonovich Obot doesnt wish to believe in this phenomenon and considers this phenomenon an optical illusion.

Of course Semyon Semyonovich can also represent Obama when it comes to dealing with dictators and terrorists. We are doomed! Stop the world I want to get off! :)

As a Reserve NCO who has 3 troops under my command in treatment for war related injuries, I consider this the worst betrayal of the US military in American history. Does he not know that private insurance has co-pays and deductables?????? IMPEACH HIM!!!

It’s not like people weren’t warned… oh wait, the masses weren’t warned. Suprise suprise suprise, well golly gee, you mean Obama is an unpatriotic scum bag…. who knew?

But I’m pretty sure this won’t fly. Obama is bogging himself down with things like this a lot like Clinton did with don’t ask don’t tell. Obama’s political capitol is flying out the window like a patriot missile shot.

America’s veterans and troops serving abroad today fought hard to preserve our red, white and blue, from the Revolutionary War to today’s Global War Against Terrorism, and Congress’ action today is appropriate for one of our most sacred symbols.
Bill Shuster

America’s veterans deserve the very best health care because they’ve earned it.
Jim Ramstad

America’s veterans embody the ideals upon which America was founded more than 229 years ago.
Steve Buyer

America’s Veterans have served their country with the belief that democracy and freedom are ideals to be upheld around the world.
John Doolittle

As a former veteran, I understand the needs of veterans, and have been clear – we will work together, stand together with the Administration, but we will also question their policies when they shortchange veterans and military retirees.
Solomon Ortiz

MooreMom on March 17, 2009 at 5:45 PM

I don’t believe this proposal will be adopted by Congress. However, just having the Secretary of Veteran’s Affairs confirm such a proposal is under consideration is itself a betrayal of all wounded veterans.

Loxodonta on March 17, 2009 at 5:56 PM

Something lost here is that long serving rtired veterans also have a health benefit as a condition of serving. I believe it is part of Tri-Care. There are some some charges involved.

The current uproar is about the duplicitous ratbags charging wounded vets, and elligible dependents for using the VA.

I would suggest that any retired vet using Tri-care can kiss this benefit goodbye. Serving members dependents had better watch out as well.

Hannity just this afternoon while talking to Oliver North said that he would make this top priority. So he will obviously be talking about it from now on. Having to talk about it at all is more than a betrayal, but a window into the mind of Barak Obama. He clearly hates America and all that it stands for. But we knew that.

Does it really matter if the idiot ‘weakens’ the formal military of the US? If he keeps this, up we will all become unofficial members of the military and if you remember what happened after 9/11, we aren’t the right people to piss off.

We DO love our freedoms, sometimes we just forget for a moment. I pity the fools who remind us…

I posted this elsewhere on HA:

I just emailed my two senators and representative (all GOP) regarding this matter. I wanted to make sure they understood that people are looking at this matter now and we won’t wait until this travesty is foisted on this nations bravest.

My congressman is on the Veteran’s committee. He’s a freshman congressman, so he won’t have much weight, but he’s also a veteran and an M.D.

We have to start bombarding Congress N-O-W!!!!

And all that “sacred trust” BS. It’s not really a lie if everybody knows you’re lying.

President TelePrompter should be barred from stepping foot on any military base. Ever.

The liar just gave $900 MILLION to Gaza, but doesn’t want to help our Veterans.

Oh, and, since he thinks so little of our military, he should just get his wife to fly AF1.

Wounded veterans have now discovered this in a most unpleasant way.

None, will feel the bitter sting of regret more than the military personnel who voted for Obama.

Illegal aliens will advance in stature and in rewards for illegal, even anti American behavior in this administration.

Military personnel aren’t on any liberal priority list in fact the left harbors a real animus towards our protectors in uniform.

Another consequence of a President and a government elected by our media.
