Alec Baldwin, supply-sider
posted at 10:58 am on March 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
In our earlier Ron Silver thread, one of our commenters reminded us that a conservative is often a liberal who has been mugged by reality. We saw a glimpse of that from Whoopi Goldberg in her rant about tax hikes ten days ago, and now the Wall Street Journal notes another prominent liberal that may be beginning to see the light:
We’re constantly told that taxes don’t matter to business and investors, but listen to that noted supply-side economist, Alec Baldwin. The actor recently rebuked New York Governor David Paterson for threatening to try to help close the state’s $7 billion budget deficit by canceling a 35% tax credit for films shot in the Big Apple.
“I’m telling you right now,” Mr. Baldwin declared, “if these tax breaks are not reinstated into the budget, film production in this town is going to collapse, and television is going to collapse and it’s all going to go to California.” Well, well. Apparently taxes do matter, at least when it comes to filming “30 Rock” in Manhattan.
Believe it or not, Mr. Baldwin’s views are shared across the movie industry, which is pleading in state capitals across the country for most-favored-tax status. Hollywood productions are highly mobile and can film just about anywhere. So they have taken to shopping around the country — and the world — for the most lucrative tax avoidance deal.
Around the world? Doesn’t that make Hollywood a “Benedict Arnold” industry, according to John Kerry? What happened to all that liberal angst about outsourcing?
Of course, Alec Baldwin is right, something you’ll rarely catch me saying or writing — but it’s hardly rocket science. Businesses tend to operate in the most friendly environments they can access. Taxes comprise part of that equation. If the tax situation in New York declines, then productions will move to other states or countries. People form companies and gain investors to maximize the return on their investments, a completely rational and beneficial arrangement that creates jobs, wealth, and desirable products for commerce.
Now, when Baldwin applies that lesson outside of his industry to the economy as a whole, he will come to the inevitable conclusion that Deadbeatonomics is the worst prescription for an ailing economy, and that lower taxes and investment encouragement are needed. He will become, as the WSJ notes, a supply sider in general, rather than just where his own pocketbook is concerned. Why is this important? Because I believe that a majority of thought exists in America that understands these principles — and that conservatives and the GOP can forge a governing coalition on economic freedom and common sense.
When even Alec Baldwin and Whoopi Goldberg understand the folly of tax hikes, opportunity exists.

The irony of the pro-tax Hollywood left relying heavily on big taxes breaks is so very delicious.

Baldwin is right on this issue. But he isn’t bright enough to connect all tax issues and bigger government to Democrats/liberals to being a problem.

What these brainiacs don’t get is that when the rest of the economy is taxed to death, they will put movie going at the bottom of their list of expenditures.
So, making the movies is the easy part. Box office will be an enitrely different animal.
The problem with libs is they live in the present and never think their theories through to the end.

Be funny if — after his bogus threats to leave the United States if George W. Bush was elected president — it was the tax hikes pushed by Democrats like Patterson and Obama that forces Alec to move to someplace like Toronto or Vancouver to continue production on “30 Rock” because it’s been taxed out of New York.

I’ll laugh my rear off if more productions leave New York and California to head to my home state of Louisiana, which has refundable tax credits for film production under the condition that the production take place in Louisiana and that a certain percentage of local actors / crew are hired.
That tax credit has been a sore subject around my house because my father used to work in the state tax office researching the impact of the legislature’s plans and he knew exactly how much money the state threw at these productions.
However, if it helps rehabilitate the image of the state while bringing more business in, I won’t knock it.
(LA’s got one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country right now because we’ve diversified our economy so much. Increasing film production in the state only helps that, IMHO.)

Ace had a speech by Evan Sayet over the weekend.
Ya’ll should give it a listen. I think part of it is totally correct.
It’s not that Baldwin was ever -for- destructive policies; it’s that they are insulated from the effect of them because of their wealth.
When one starts to hit home, they see the reality and oppose it.
His point on stars like Baldwin/Springstein/etc is that stupidity is a luxury.
Listen to the whole thing. It’s awesome.
Now, just for fun….listen to his speech. Then re-watch Family Guy from this past sunday (the OJ episode) and watch in amazement.

Alec Baldwin for lower taxes? Hang on, let me check outside. Nope, it’s cold out there, but Hell has not frozen over just yet. Hmm, maybe he lost some money with Madoff like Kevin Bacon did.
On a slightly more serious note, I don’t see Baldwin(at least one not named Stephen) campaigning for the GOP anytime soon. But when even he’s publicly denouncing the Democrat policy of tax hikes on businesses, you know the tide is turning.

I think its an opportunity conservative could cash in on, but Alec Baldwin is a schmuck in general…not a supply-sider in general.
He should have thought about that before he and Chevy Chase (another real deadbeat) wanted SNL to destroy Sarah Palin.
Okay…I got that off my chest. :)

Questions for Mr. Baldwin:
Isn’t it the film industry’s patriotic duty to pay taxes?
Isn’t it wrong for poor people to exist when he’s so rich?
Why is he threatening to withold New York’s money?
The answer to that last question (it’s not THEIR money at all) is what drives people to conservatism like plants towards sunlight.

Ed, for decades Canadian governments ( both federal and provincial) have used tax credits to lure Hollywood production companies over the border. Alec and his Hollywood buddies have not only enjoyed these tax credits but demanded more.
So this recent declaration by Alec is not news to me. Just typical liberal hypocrisy.

It ain’t just the taxes its the unionization that also drives up the costs of production but you’ll never hear Hollywood complain about that.

I guess Hopey/Changey is ok as long as it doesn’t affect MY pocketbook. Who in the frick cares about the Hollywood crazies anyway. Nicely said Ed, however, what you miss is that these liberals are big fat hypocrites. One of the central flaws in leftist idiology is that those expousing it are “speical” or “elites” who should be treated differently than the rest of us. Once Hollywood secures it’s special tax treatment they will go back to their same old tired populist message of attacking the rich while exempting themselves and their own industry. To think that these people are ever going to change into republicans or conservatives is to assume they believe in fundamental fairness in tax policy. Something that is clearly nonexistent.
