Quotes of the day
posted at 9:45 pm on March 14, 2009 by Allahpundit
***
“I have been teased about my weight and body figure since I was in middle school, and I decided a very long time ago to embrace what God gave me and live my life positively, attempting to set an example for other girls who may suffer with body image issues. I have nothing to hide: I am a size eight and fluctuated up to a size ten during the campaign. It’s ridiculous to even have this conversation because I am not overweight in the least and have a natural body weight…
The question remains: Why, after all this time and all the progress feminists have made, is weight still such an issue? And, in Laura’s case, why in the world would a woman raise it? Today, taking shots at a woman’s weight has become one of the last frontiers in socially accepted prejudice.”

That Ingraham clip is painful.

Laura may think Meghan is fat but at least Meghan has been with Keith Olbermann.
SnarkVader on March 14, 2009 at 9:50 PM
Didn’t Meghan make a crack at Laura’s age? Geez, this is like the female version of Frum vs. Limbaugh
jimmy the notable on March 14, 2009 at 9:50 PM
She’s a chip off the old blockhead.
TexasJew on March 14, 2009 at 9:51 PM
There’s, of course, the audio of Laura berating her staff during her brief FNC stint. There’s other audio, that’s been buried of her going ballistic when a guest on her radio show had never heard of her. Maybe some enterprising person can find it. I like Laura’s show for the most part but she’s a little full of herself. This wasn’t her finest moment.
AYNBLAND on March 14, 2009 at 9:52 PM
I think Meghan is a ditz and an airhead and VERY naive, but her weight is just fine & she looks very natural and comfortable with her size. This is a non-issue.
Ris4victory on March 14, 2009 at 9:52 PM
She’s a size 8?!! Is she buying her clothes at one of those very up scale boutiques where they manipulate the sizes so people will not know it’s really a size 16 or 18? I’ve heard of these but never actually run across them.(Damn! I really would like to though)
jeanie on March 14, 2009 at 9:53 PM
I’d hit that. Many times.

“And I think there’s extreme on both party. And I hate extreme.”
What schools did she attend? Evidently, a 410 on the English part of her SATs didn’t hurt her. I’d hate to think what her math score was. Sheesh.
“I have friends that are the most radically conservative and radically liberal people, possibly ever …”
Uh … okay. Go back to kindergarten.
This girl is just, plain dumb.

Its not prejudice….. people just dont like fat people.
No fat chicks.
Nobody wants to date them…nobody wants to slurp them….nobody wants to marry them.
No fat chicks.
Meghan….you are Paris Hilton….except you are waaaaaay fatter. You arent any smarter than Paris Hilton and you didnt get anywhere on your own.

Why doesn’t this twit go away? I will say that Laura’s comment was immature and made her sound ridiculous, but I’m beginning to think that M. McCain is on the dems payroll. I know, not an original thought.

Oh for Obama’s sake. Here we go again.
El_Terrible on March 14, 2009 at 9:56 PM
That clip is hilarious! This is why Laura is THE best radio talk show host. Megan McCain does sound like a stupid valley girl who would vote for Obama if her daddy weren’t running for president as a Republican.
Oh no, another liberal victim. And SHE is the one making this an issue.
Gabe on March 14, 2009 at 9:56 PM
But no one should ever, ever make fun of Sarah Palin’s looks, right?
SnarkVader on March 14, 2009 at 9:56 PM
She looks like Miss Piggy. I can’t believe her dad wants her out there when he is facing re-election. She’s a disaster.

I am anticipating that this thread will pretty much sink the Hotair “commentariat” lower than we’ve ever been. And I’m embarrassed for us. I joined because there were people who used to discuss politics very intelligently. Now….not at all.
jimmy the notable on March 14, 2009 at 9:57 PM
If lil’ McCain’s skin is too thin for the political venue, she should rethink her career.
It’s a big bad world sweets!

To deflect the damage that the idiot-in-chief is perpetrating on this nation on a daily basis, the Left is using Meghan McCain to attack an outspoken conservative, and she is a willing participant in this fraud.
Laura Ingraham is right to kick her in the ass.
TexasJew on March 14, 2009 at 9:57 PM
I just can’t see taking shots at other republicans does any good. Ingraham should stick to policy debates. She long lost me as a listener.
KBird on March 14, 2009 at 9:57 PM
I don’t think anyone as skinny as Ingraham should pick on someones weight. Laura can be a real b!tch about soe superficial things. “OMG did that person wear flip flops one a plane?!?!?!” I think Meghan is politically an idiot and can’t stand what she is doing. She is the Paris Hilton of politics. But if Laura wants to lower the argument to looks then Meghan will trumps her any day. Meghan is annoying but cute.

She does not look like Miss Piggy. She’s very blond and possibly a little naive, but she’s not overweight.
Frivolous on March 14, 2009 at 9:59 PM
I could care less about Meghan. However, since she likes to talk about the issues, I hope Laura challenges this imbecile to a debate on her radio show. Meghan would either be gutless, or exhibit such idiot status.
Meghan to Rachel Madcow: I’m so looking for an apartment in NYC with Mommy’s money. I’m such a liberal! Let’s talk about it with a drink of latte in Starbucks!

TexasJew on March 14, 2009 at 10:00 PM

progressoverpeace on March 14, 2009 at 10:00 PM
Good lord! How old is Laura? That just made me sick. With all the women who have Eating Disorders, at least Mehgan is Healthy looking. I cannot stand McCain’s daughter. I do think she is a very naive young lady who is more than likely a Rino. Like Father like Daughter. But come on Laura! This is the third time that you have acted like a 2 year old. And this is the image you are making people think Conservatives are like? No, I don’t think so Laura.
sheebe on March 14, 2009 at 10:01 PM
The thing about Laura Ingraham is that she is hot looking.
She keeps herself looking fit…she beat the hell out of cancer…and she kept herself looking hot.
Here comes Meghan McCain, grazing on oreos and cheetos, and this lady who is way older than her and has battled cancer is waaaaay better looking than cow McCain.
Hey Meghan, yeah, you know, Laura is, like, you know, way older than you, but, you know, ya its true, even though she is, like, you know, waaaay older than you and fought cancer, she is, like, you know, waaaaaaay better looking than you…..let alone smarter you pathetic embarrassment.

El_Terrible on March 14, 2009 at 10:02 PM
Here’s the problem with this argument:
Ingraham has taken a person that, for someone as intelligent as she is, should be easy to defeat simply on the basis of reasonable, political arguments, but has decided to take the low road. This not only makes Laura lower than Meghan because she resorted to those petty arguments, it makes her look like that is the only argument she has, essentially self-labeling herself as someone dumber than Meghan McCain.
jimmy the notable on March 14, 2009 at 10:02 PM

Sorry this isn’t a straight up fat joke.
It is a joke about what a 24 year old valley girl thinks is important (for example thier appearance) versus what being an informed person with a complete coherent set of ideas. Could you even speak like this on a job interview no less be a spokesperson?
I get that this is a classic Rush scenario where the word “fat” and “fail” stop the person cold in their thinking so here we go again.
Now the context has to be explain that she was using it as an example of vapid thinking by a no nothing child(which it was…listen to Meghan it isn’t even an adult argument) and we have to go back an forth whether she was just saying she is fat. I do think Inggrahm slip speaking of the cuff and picked a bad example of the inner workings of Meghan’s mind but it isn’t a straight fat comment. She is speaking in Meghan’s voice.
Conan on March 14, 2009 at 10:05 PM
Come on, jimmy. Laura was mocking the McCain chick’s vapid valley-girl style. I wrote a couple of the nearly unintelligible quotes from McCain above. How do you hold a reasonable debate with someone who speaks like that?

Sekhmet on March 14, 2009 at 10:10 PM
Laura Ingraham needs to lay off the jokes about people’s physical characteristics. It’s just “low road” and very unbecoming. I like Laura, and I think she can take on the best of them with reasoned arguments. This is one serious character flaw that Laura needs to work on.
Sorry, Meghan McCain is right on this one.
DrStock on March 14, 2009 at 10:10 PM
1. Meghan McCain is not unattractive, a little plump but not “fat” by normal standards. It shouldn´t be an issue.
2. Meghan McCain sounds like an idiot and I wish she´d go away. I´m with Laura on that.
3. I have seen vicious, really vicious attacks on Meghan McCain on liberal blogs before the election, so please spare me the lament about the commenters here.
el gordo on March 14, 2009 at 10:11 PM
But even if that’s the argument she was making, the perception has simply been adapted to “Laura calls Meghan fat!” If you don’t believe that, simply check out all the comments that say, “Yeah, I can’t believe how fat she is! She should shut up!”
If Laura doesn’t want to debate someone as stupid as Meghan with real arguments, she should just ignore her.

PBoilermaker on March 14, 2009 at 10:18 PM
I listen to Laura almost every day, she’s a pretty rigid person. My favorite is when tells some long story about being late to the studio for the show (daily), then chastises a guest who isn’t Johnny on the spot. That said, Ms. McCain cannot keep putting herself out there, make massive generalizations about about Republicans and unsubstantiated remarks about Ms. Coulter (anti-semitic) and expect to get away with it. Playing the victim card is just another step towards admitting your a liberal. Who would have thought that I would encourage Laura to follow Ann’s lead and ignore young Meghan?
Cindy Munford on March 14, 2009 at 10:18 PM
Yeech. I like Laura Ingraham, and am much closer to her politically than to Meghan McCain, but LI comes off as a petty, sneering fool in that clip – crude and unkind, the worst caricature of a conservative. I don’t listen to her show regularly, but that strikes me as a terrible moment for her – not just the “plus-size” comment, but the whole routine is pathetic, and beneath the dignity of someone who likes to pose as a champion of values. If that’s legitimate, then no one has any standing to reject Frum’s attack on Rush, or all the demeaning attacks on Palin, Bush, whomever. It’s just low – not as foul as Kathy Griffin or Randi Rhodes, but it’s the same thing.

Okay. I confess. I’ve been making “fat jokes” about my wife — who is now 8+ months pregnant. We both laugh at the awkwardness of it. I’ve even learned to mimic “the walk”.
Fortunately, my wife takes it all in the spirit that it was meant — good natured soul that she is. Fat, skinny, short, tall, young, old, it doesn’t really matter — somehow, there is an element of hilarity in the undignified humiliation that we call “the human condition”. What do you think, collie?
My collie says:
CyberCipher on March 14, 2009 at 10:20 PM
If you go after Laura’s looks you have to directly insult her looks and she can EXPLAIN that her comments were directed at Meghan’s vapid thinking. Thus the person going after Laura’s looks would be in trouble and if you are talking about anonymous posters they have been taking far worse personal shots even HERE! So those people are not an issue.

Meghan has only been a Republican since last June. She started writing for The Daily Beast in January so I suppose we’re going to have to endure more future columns. Here’s her archive page. So far it looks as if she does Republican/conservative bashing and writes about herself.
I suggest she might find her niche a little quicker if she spent some time emulating the humanitarian work her mom has done rather than trying to dabble at the edge of politics.
INC on March 14, 2009 at 10:24 PM

progressoverpeace on March 14, 2009 at 10:24 PM
Exactly. It is strange that people here still don’t understand. Anyway, Laura is a very conservative and devout Catholic and wouldn’t be making fun of someone gratuitously without a point, and her point is that Megan is a shallow valley girl “I like have the most totally radical friends ever” that thinks weight is an issue and then presumes to talk politics. She criticizes conservatives to be lauded in the liberal press and wants to be taken seriously.
Also, it is ironic that Megan is the one making this an issue, and then whining that SHE is the victim, but I guess she like totally doesn’t get it.
