Video: Shepard Smith goofs on Glenn Beck

posted at 7:12 pm on March 13, 2009 by Allahpundit

Good-natured ribbing — or is it? The segment ends cordially enough, with the two sharing a laugh, but Shep’s never had much patience for right-wing alarmism and Beck, after all, is the current gold standard in it. Is there more to this needling than meets the eye? I’m intrigued that even Wallace feels compelled to call him out.

To Beck’s credit, at least he’s got a sense of humor about it. Click the image to watch.

Yeah, I don’t get the Levin/Beck thing. I love Levin, but does he really think he’s the only guy on earth to realize through independent observation that Obama is a socialist?

I could be that as Levin’s star is rising on radio Beck’s is taking off on the tube. Beck has also taken over a.m. drive slot on WOR in N.Y.. I’m not an expert mind you, but I am a thinker. ; )

Sounds like Fox family tough love or something. I doubt there’s more to it.

If upstart, rube, Beck was going to take my job, I’d be pissed too.

unfortunately, for the Shep, the inverse is true.

So sad.

Nah I dont think Shep was realy ripping on Beck. It just sounded like it because even when shep is trying to be funny he comes off as a whiney douche.

Dreadnought223 on March 13, 2009 at 11:56 PM

…but Shep was not begrudging Glenn’s success, he was mocking it.

Sweet! Sorry it took so long to write back, I was putting my kids to bed. We were in the overflow room. I was the dashing young buck with a full beard. My wife was the smoking hot little blonde, with my youngest on her hip and my oldest at her feet (he kept wanting to play the video games!). Maybe we can get together quarterly with the others from tonight.

Weight of Glory on March 13, 2009 at 9:24 PM

yes we must get together soon. Hopefully we will make contact through some of the groups we discovered today at the viewing. If not perhaps AP can hook us up through e-mails. I would like to buy you a good Mexican food dinner and talk some treason.

Okay I read the comments on the link… and someone said they read the comments here… us watching them watch us I guess.

I like Shep I never feel like falling asleep when he is on. And it sort of feels like standing in line at the supermarket and trying to read the tabloid headlines without anyone noticing that I’m trying to read the….

Anyway, Beck is just plain reading the Tabloid headlines…and loving it! Actually my daughter regularly watched him on Cnn and would quote him and send me stuf from his website… but I didn’t really watch him myself until he moved to Fox.

I hope he doesn’t over do it and become a parody of himself although he starts as a parody of himself… He is funny and sincere and what Sean Hannity would call a “great American”. I do think you could get a bit saturated however.

No way Shep could be jealous. They don’t compete. What’s good for Fox is good for Shep and Beck is good for all of us.

Beck is the anti-Daily Show. Moment of Zen versus The Doom Room!

How could anyone who loves this country not be on the verge of crying almost at any minute with the way things are going?

I’ll admit, I cry. If I see the flag flying majestically somewhere, and then I think of the Vermin in Washington, I cry.

If I hear about the sacrifice our people in the military are making and I think about the scum in Universities, I cry.

When I hear about the character and honor of George Washington and then think about the city they named after him , I cry.

When I hear Iran and North Korea are launching satellites, I cry.

I love when Beck plays a Linkin Park song as bumper music. That gets Levin ranting for at least a week.

“Fear Chamber”, “Doom Room”. LOL.. So crazy funny.

VinceP1974 on March 14, 2009 at 3:19 AM

I look at the picture of Shep, and I have to wonder if he is thinking about Barney Frank.

RobertInLexington on March 14, 2009 at 6:23 AM

I love Beck but have to admit I haven’t yet witnessed a crying spell – now that would put me off. He needs to man up.

Shep Smith is a pussy – pure and simple. A preening strutting popinjay. A parakeet male. I cannot stand him. Someone said he’s earning 5 million a year – God I hope not. Now Brit Hume – he’s worth 10 times that.

Charles Martel on March 14, 2009 at 8:05 AM

Beck used to be be funny and entertaining. Now’s he’s becoming annoying. And the crying…puh-leeze.

angryed on March 14, 2009 at 8:31 AM

As the child of early Baby Boomer parents, it is my generation and those that follow who will be forced the shoulder the greatest share of the burden that the Boomers will bequeath us.

It’s pretty funny seeing the “generations” point fingers at each other. Something forgotten here is that each successive generation is the product of the preceeding. Each generation, at least since the beginning of the last century, also considered itself superior to that generation that came before. That pretty much sums up the basis for our sad state; our fealings of enlightenment and superiority over what came before us and our permissiveness towards our children that perpetuates that trait.

peacenprosperity on March 14, 2009 at 8:48 AM

Beck reminds me of the old guy, at the baseball game, who tears up when the National Anthem is played.

I tear up during times like that and so do a lot of other people.

In fact, watching what is taking place in our country right now, who the hell wouldn’t tear up?

Allahpundit on March 13, 2009 at 7:22 PM

Most likely during a ratings sweep. He was hired to make a ton of money for Fox News…However Beck is just the flavor of the week. I think Fox or any of them would set a nun on fire for our viewing pleasure if they thought it would sell a few more boxes of adult diapers.

A man tears up when he thinks of how his country is about to be turned into Europe and you take disdain to that?

People on here tell Beck to toughen up…really? I would rather watch a man cry at the thought of his country being destroyed from within than listen to a bunch people bitch, wail and complain about what they see and don’t do a damn thing about it.

Oh, I forgot, you come on HotAir and bitch…. yes, a true cultural crusader you are.

RobertInLexington on March 14, 2009 at 9:54 AM

I like Glenn Beck. That being said, the teary eyed crap puts him on the same level as the propagandist on the other end of the spectrum-Keith Olbergoebbels…It’s fake…

Isn’t Shep Smith a closet lefty anyway?…I remember during Hurricane Katrina he was blaming Bush like all the other lefty commies when the Chocolate Mayor was first in line as far a accountability for the Chocolate City…

adamsmith on March 14, 2009 at 10:02 AM

What’s interesting is that the smear merchants haven’t made a dent on Beck yet. O’Reilly put the fear of god into Beck in an after interview asking him if he was ok with the absolute fact that Obama’s gang were coming after Beck’s wife and kids. He lead in with a segment about the morning pow wow the Obama hit squad have on who is going down and how this week. O’Reilly asked the sme of Cramer didn’t he? Just before Jon Stewart took him out. Will the be able to get to Beck? Because of all Obama’s critic, Rush included, Beck is the only one who has managed to motivate the silent majority. They must be planning something extra special for this man to shut him down.

Beck is genuine and honest. People realize that and it stikes a chord with them…ala Sarah Palin. His humor helps keep it real and from getting too heavy. People like that. Yeah, the cryin’ is a bit uncomfortable to watch, but I feel the same when I watch these retards ruining this country.

You’ve pretty much mirrored my thoughts on Beck, especially about him being genuine and honest. Although, I have to admit some days I’m on the fence. Mostly, he strikes me as the best thing Fox has going these days. But other days he strikes me as a little unstable…

Douchebag Shep could always get a job at CNN in Beck’s old time slot. That’s where he belongs anyway.

conservnut on March 14, 2009 at 11:19 AM

Glenn Beck can cry all he wants. I am right there with him. He loves his country and is finding Obama to be as offensive as we all thought he would be times 100. It’s frustrating to watch your country go down the tubes. My husband and I promised each other to make sure we took care of each other, to remain healthy in mind and body. As our Liberal friends became more insufferable from Nov. 5th on we have begun severing those relationships, slowly but surely. We have been cultivating new friends that share our philosophy. We don’t know how much time we have left on this earth and whatever it is, it is more comforting than listening to Liberals.
Glenn took our idea and really organized and expanded on it and that in itself has comfort and hope attatched to it. We are gathering with like minded friends more often. I don’t think my blood pressure is as high and it is much more rewarding. Be snarky about Glenn all you want it doesn’t change the fact that Obama is a total failure and America is indeed in peril, both in domestic and foreign affairs. I never voted for this change and I don’t think millions of others did either. The stupid ones have no clue what they did, if they ever do they will never admit it. I can’t waste my time with those folks and have to take some sort of correctional action. Glenn has offered it and many people are acting on it.

BetseyRoss on March 14, 2009 at 11:37 AM

Glenn, like I was born in 1964. The last year of the Baby Boomers. He realizes that we are the generation that will have to fix everything that the older bastards completely and utterly messed up.

shomegirl on March 13, 2009 at 9:17 PM

Not all older boomers messed up this country. Many just lived quiet lives working hard, raising good kids. Many served bravely in Viet Nam.

Beck, like Rush does not claim to be a journalist. Shep on the other hand is supposed to be.

Jim Treacher on March 13, 2009 at 11:31 PM

There were some insinuations made a couple of years ago by Rush Limbaugh that certain conservative radio talk show hosts were really just playing conservative radio talk show hosts because that’s where the ratings and the money were, not because there was anything in their core beliefs that made them feel that way before they ever came to talk radio.

No names were ever dropped, and it’s possible Rush was talking about somebody (or somebodies) else. But it was just about the time Beck was really starting to make a name for himself, and Mark Levin’s been close to Rush for a very long time (and his show is basically Limbaugh’s positions on the issues mixed with Bob Grant’s in-your-face show host style). Mark is less circumspect about who he calls out, but if he’s going after Beck, my guess is it’s something he and Rush have talked about in the past.

Amen.

To all who want Beck to “man up” and are alarmed by seeing a real man cry (not an Alan Alda girlie man, a real man) at the sight of the utter destruction of all that he values in this world take a look in the mirror and see who needs to man up.

Remember the millions of soldiers, men and women, and millions of military families who have put their lives on the line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for US AND FOR THIS COUNTRY, many of whom who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

Then compare THOSE HEROES to the slobbering, weenie-fied, screeching godless soul-less vapid cowards who are hell-bent on a scorch and burn war against everything good and decent about our precious country youre damn right I cry.

My husband cries, my bothers, uncles, cousins, (representing the Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force) youre damn right they cry. So whats your freakin point.

Shepsters a creepy lightweight, no-brain, supposedly good looking. IMO he looks like a drag queen. Hes much worse than Hannity and OReilly. Those 2 pull their punches with crap like “all due respect” when interviewing some of the satanic leftists they have on their shows.

The Shepster is Fox News answer to Anne Curry.

Too much coffee.

I meant to add that at least Hannity and OReilly throw a punch, even if they do pull back before connecting. Sheppy never does unless hes got a weak conservative on his show, then he starts popping veins but never at the lying leftists.

kooziegirl on March 14, 2009 at 3:16 PM

The only time I consistently watched Shepard Smith’s show was during the election because he (like the other Fox News shows) had lots of Conservatives/Republicans on there.

I could get Democrat surrogates galore on any of the other major networks.

If there were Libs on these shows, they were usually countered either with a guest or by the host. They would cut them off during their talking points.

The other networks would accept Dem talking points as Gospel and let them ramble on.

Dr. ZhivBlago on March 14, 2009 at 3:42 PM

Shep was strong during Katrina and admired his coverage. When he attacked Joe the Plumber during election coverage I switched him off.

He pressed Joe too hard. Joe handled it OK but I resented the sudden change to hard hitting “journalism” from Shep.

I believe he gave himself away and if I want to see conservatives attacked I can go over to CNN or MSLSD.

A real man can and will cry. That means he is in touch with the situation at hand and with his feelings. I suffer all kinds of emotions when I think about what is happening/being done to our country. Anger, sadness, confusion, etc. Yes, I want to cry sometimes, too. My and your kids and grandkids are the ones who will pay the price for this.

I don’t get why Levin is so popular…….. I used to be addicted to his show…. the first 50 times you hear ”Get off the phone you big dope” is funny…… then it gets annoying…. Levin is the rudest most obnoxious show-host I ever heard on radio… he has a very bad anger-management problem and is rude even to friendly callers…. I’ll bet Levin will not last another 3 months….. he’s a heart-attack waiting to happen online…..and I pity his family if he yells and screams like that at home…..
