The Man who Fell to Earth from the Sky

posted at 11:55 am on March 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

When critics of Obama administration policy speak to public skepticism, Obama apologists point to his approval numbers in various polls.  One of those pollsters now says not to pay as much attention to the general approval number, but the motion in the underlying numbers.  Douglas Schoen and Scott Rasmussen explain that Obama’s support has quickly declined to just his own party, and even that may be at risk:

It is simply wrong for commentators to continue to focus on President Barack Obama’s high levels of popularity, and to conclude that these are indicative of high levels of public confidence in the work of his administration. Indeed, a detailed look at recent survey data shows that the opposite is most likely true. The American people are coming to express increasingly significant doubts about his initiatives, and most likely support a different agenda and different policies from those that the Obama administration has advanced.

Polling data show that Mr. Obama’s approval rating is dropping and is below where George W. Bush was in an analogous period in 2001. Rasmussen Reports data shows that Mr. Obama’s net presidential approval rating — which is calculated by subtracting the number who strongly disapprove from the number who strongly approve — is just six, his lowest rating to date.

That number bounced upward a little to 9 in today’s tracking poll, but the trend has certainly been a sharp decline.  When Obama took office in January, he had a 30-point gap in this measurement.  The trend line for strong approval shows a shallow decline from the 40% level to the mid-30s, but the problem comes in the strong disapproval number.  It has risen sharply from a honeymoon 10% to the low 30s, as independents peel away from Obama.

Rasmussen notes this as an indicator of a confidence drain:

Overall, Rasmussen Reports shows a 56%-43% approval, with a third strongly disapproving of the president’s performance. This is a substantial degree of polarization so early in the administration. Mr. Obama has lost virtually all of his Republican support and a good part of his Independent support, and the trend is decidedly negative.

The American people as a whole tends to give new administrations some time to find their footing, which is usually referred to as the “honeymoon” period.  The polling shows that Obama has rapidly depleted that store of goodwill, and that voters have begun taking a hard look at the massive amounts of spending and government expansion, as well as the fumbling response to the financial crisis.  Rasmussen notes that taxes have become a big concern, with most voters no longer buying the line that Obama can fund his programs merely by taxing the top 5% of earners.  Over eighty percent — a hefty bipartisan majority — worry that the deficit spending Obama has proposed will make the situation worse, not better.

The top-line tracking poll measures whether people like Obama.  In general, they still do — but the leading indicators show that they’re beginning to re-evalute his policies to the detriment of Obama and the Democrats helping him ram them through Congress.

One major problem with the Kos poll-it’s not a job approval poll. It’s a “favorability poll”.

They also are afraid to disclose very much about the “methodology” of their poll. Such as how many of those polled were from what party, etc.

Check W’s departing numbers against Truman’s departing numbers… and then look at how Truman is viewed today.

As for W’s numbers… his numbers were higher than Congress’ numbers… and his numbers were that low because he was too liberal for Republicans and not even close to being liberal enough for Democrats. BHO may fare better because the Left will stick by their man (especially a “man of color”) even as the country heads down the drain (see also: Hugo Chavez)… so I believe it is actually impossible for BHO to ever get below 35-37% whereas the Right long “disapproved” of Bush starting with the new drug entitlement and Teddy’s Education Bill.

mankai on March 13, 2009 at 12:43 PM

Here’s what will keep The One sinking – You spend a trillion dollars to “stimulate” the economy, and people kind of expect to see something happen other than the stock market continuing to collapse.

I don’t think people in general are going to be willing to wait for the stimulus. For a $trillion they are expecting results now.

Stephen Macklin on March 13, 2009 at 12:43 PM

If you look at the RCP averages, Obama has gone from an approval – disapproval of + 43.3 to +30.6. in the last 44 days (as of 3/12/09). If he continues to fall at that rate he will be underwater in about 4 months.

The polling shows that Obama has rapidly depleted that store of goodwill, and that voters have begun taking a hard look at the massive amounts of spending and government expansion, as well as the fumbling response to the financial crisis.

It is too bad the majority of voters did not realize this last November.

The massive amount of spending (and the forthcoming spending during the next 4 years) will just be socialism for rich companies.

The American people have been conditioned to believe that the president can just wave his magic wand and fix all of their problems. That Bush was just to mean and greedy to do that.

References to Godwin’s Law often actually refer to a corollary of it which determines that the person who first makes an unwarranted reference to Nazi Germany or Hitler in an argument loses that argument automatically.

If I was making an argument that had nothing to do with the possibility of rising fascism, then your reference to this would be appropriate.
But since IMHO fascism has been, & IS rising in this country, I see fit to point out the similarities.
I could have easily subbed in Stalin for Hitler.
But they both work in these times.
Obama is looking like a rising fascist more & more everyday.

A highly educated friend of mine and I were listening to the Palin / Biden debate. He was falling for all the Biden lies (he had preconceived ideas and already an Obama guy). I had to hide my consternation and feelings all the while as I knew he was not going to listen to reason.

A week ago I was with him when I mentioned to him that steps Obama is taking should show the economy turn around by end 2009 (trying to get his thoughts on how he felt his guy was doing). The look on his face was priceless. He does not think the turn around will be that soon maybe late 2010.

I feel that a lot of the ‘lost souls’ are now what my friend is – realist. Hope they never fall for any lies again. In the mean time, hopefully, we will start to see the tunnel (light is still far far way).

In my experience, the more ‘highly educated’ one is, the more ignorant they are when it comes to logical reasoning.
Real life becomes a fantasy & the little world they live in becomes their vision of the world’s reality.
I only have a BS undergrad degree- but it isn’t a BA & my critical thinking skills are just a bit higher than many of those with PHD’s in the ‘arts’.
But then again, I’m just a dumb high school science teacher/rancher so what in the hell do I know about ‘real’ education.

You are either Brian Williams of NBC News or Baghdad Bob. I’m not sure which has the greatest credibitity.

And the food STAMP riots will be worse!!!

Sometimes your brain just goes *Bing*!

Do you realize that “Food Stamps” are simply a second form of black market currency in the USA? Most are not even printed anymore, but are given out in the form of “Debit Cards”. If anyone here knows of an article on what is the total value of the the food stamp program, it would be interesting to see as you would have to add this to the current M1 which would increase the inflation rate. By having two separate currencies, used by two separate parts of the economy, the inflation rate can be masked for a while. If you are hyper-printing regular currency AND expanding Food Stamps….

We are in such trouble.

GunRunner on March 13, 2009 at 1:24 PM

My daughter works for a non-profit, and there are many, many far left folks in her office. During the campaign she said it was almost unbearable to go to work each day, as the libs simply hounded anyone who wasn’t for BO. Well she now reports that her office is dead quiet….NO ONE is speaking about BO at all!

But don’t worry, lulwot says we won’t have to go to camps.

Thanks for your permission.
Now you go back to work.

lolwut on March 13, 2009 at 1:19 PM

So sorry my opinion does not mesh with yours.
I guess calling attention to historical parallels is off limits to you if it includes references to Hitler & deaths by communism?
Notice, I am not saying Obama is going to start death camps.
I am worried he’s setting irreversible precedents that are very similar to the fascism Italy,Germany, & Russian encountered at certain points in their histories.
GunRunner called attention to some of them.
So then you want to say I’m an idiot for doing so?
As I recall, there were a lot of people who never saw the carnage of the 1st 1/2 of the 20th century coming-but it did happen.
So I’m an idiot for pointing that out?
Code Pinko & folks like them are wacko when they provide no reference for their criticism.
Is debate to big of a word for you?
Was Chamberlain the voice of reason for his time?
Or did Churchill have a point?

Badger40 on March 13, 2009 at 1:31 PM

What this slippage in his poll numbers shows is that he’s spent a lot of political capital with all of this spending he and the Dems have partaken in.

He’s still popular with most of the public. And I do think the American people will give him time to turn things around. But if the stock market and the budget deficit are any indication, confidence in the guy is low at the moment.

Doughboy on March 13, 2009 at 1:32 PM

Yeah, there was no unity for this crisis and you want him to fail.

getalife on March 13, 2009 at 1:21 PM

Well you see libtard, its hard to have unity when millions of Americans dont see prosperity and unicorns sh*tting golden pellets when they look at the economic “policies” of Eastern Europe and any other Socialist country in the last 30 years. So maybe they are a little leery of that part of “Change”. Also, do you think maybe the leadership as I mentioned that GWB showed had something to do with the high numbers? That was my point. President Embarrassment is showing ZERO leadership in these tough economic times.

EagleClaw on March 13, 2009 at 1:32 PM

Yeah, there was no unity for this crisis and you want him to fail.

getalife on March 13, 2009 at 1:21 PM

The country agreed with what Bush did. Very few agree with what Barry is doing.

MarkTheGreat on March 13, 2009 at 1:34 PM

Not listening to rush is a brave admission.

getalife on March 13, 2009 at 1:18 PM

I said this when?
Don’t generalize. I used to listen to Rush.
Now that I’m out of college, I quit listening to the radio bcs I have a job & living in the stix I don’t get the reception I need to hear Rush.
I am guessing in your opinion, also, that when people hear other opinions they are not able to form their own?
So if I listen to Rush or Glenn Beck then I’m their robot?
I do have my own set of critical thinking skills.
I am violating them right now by arguing the obvious with you.

Voted. I wouldn’t normally vote 10 stars just because someone asked me to, but that piece deserved it – that is cool.

Vashta.Nerada on March 13, 2009 at 12:28 PM

I voted a 10 because it was worthy of a ten, not because you asked for a 10.
