Obama appointee takes leave after raid

posted at 9:31 am on March 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, the FBI raided the offices of Vivek Kundra, Barack Obama’s appointee as Chief Information Officer for his administration, in a bribery sting that netted two arrests, including one of Kundra’s top aides.  Kundra has apparently decided to spend some time with his family, as the White House announced that he would take a leave of absence from the job he just started:

An aide to President Barack Obama is on leave from his White House job after the FBI raided his old District of Columbia government office Thursday, arresting a city employee and a technology consultant on corruption charges, a White House official said.

The charges were lodged against the two men at a federal court hearing as the FBI finished searching the city’s technology office, which was led until recently by Obama’s new computer chief, Vivek Kundra.

Kundra is on leave from his White House job until further details of the case become known, according to a White House official speaking on condition of anonymity because the official did not want to publicly discuss personnel matters.

The Washington Post also reports (oddly, in its Metro section) that the probe involved “ghost workers” and kickbacks for contracts.  While Kundra so far has not been named as a target in the probe, one has to wonder how the man who runs an agency can be ignorant of “ghost workers”:

Federal authorities said the conspiracy, which operated for at least a year, worked like this:

Acar approved work with a vendor, such as Bansal’s AITC, to arrange the purchase of goods such as software. The vendor ordered fewer items but billed the District for a larger amount. Bansal, Acar and others then split the proceeds, FBI officials said.

Acar also approved fraudulent time sheets for nonexistent employees, Sekela wrote. Acar and the others split the proceeds paid by the D.C. government, Sekela alleged.

Authorities traced more than $200,000 in payments last year from Bansal’s firm to a private company, Circle Networks Inc. The firm is co-owned by Acar, even though he is prohibited from having an interest in any company doing business with the city, Sekela wrote. Circle Networks generated about $2.2 million in revenue through D.C. government contracts, the agent wrote.

Again, Kundra himself hasn’t been implicated in wrongdoing, but it does raise the question of exactly what Kundra did as the head of DC’s technology office.  Acar worked as Kundra’s aide, and at best one can say that Acar managed to run this ring right under Kundra’s nose.  Kundra had to approve, explicitly or tacitly, the payroll for the agency, which employed less than 300 people. Any competent chief executive of a firm that size would know how many employees worked for him and how much they cost; in fact, it would be one of the primary issues on their agenda.

And what happened to auditors?  Government agencies are supposed to audit their records to keep them accountable.  Washington DC is accountable directly to Congress and is run out of the federal system.  Presumably, Kundra would work with auditors and the Inspector General to maintain accountability.  Either Kundra dropped the ball here, too, or Congress needs to look into the system to find out what went wrong.

The best we can say about Vivek Kundra in this episode is that he’s incompetent as an executive, which thus far puts him at the same level of accomplishment as the man who hired him to work in the White House.

Suffice to say, anyone involved in the DC government is dirty. Investigations are unnecessary, being corrupt is a prerequisite and a requirement for serving in the DC government.

I don’t know, I think the value to the taxpayer INCREASES whenever an Obama-ite or Democrat in general stays away from work.

Democrats not in the office =s less stupid legislation and less opportunities to take kickbacks, bribes, rig elections, etc.

I’d be fine with paying Democrats NOT to work. It would be a better stimulus than anything that’s come out of the Obama White House.

NoDonkey on March 13, 2009 at 9:50 AM

Star20 on March 13, 2009 at 10:17 AM

It’s also a key indicator to passive agressive behavior.

Here are a few tidbits…do they fit?

Ambiguity: I think of the proverb, “Actions speak louder than words” when it comes to the passive aggressive and how ambiguous they can be. They rarely mean what they say or say what they mean. The best judge of how a passive aggressive feels about an issue is how they act. Normally they don’t act until after they’ve caused some kind of stress by their ambiguous way of communicating.

Forgetfulness: The passive aggressive avoids responsibility by “forgetting.” How convenient is that? There is no easier way to punish someone than forgetting that lunch date or your birthday or, better yet, an anniversary.

Blaming: They are never responsible for their actions. If you aren’t to blame then it is something that happened at work, the traffic on the way home or the slow clerk at the convenience store. The passive aggressive has no faults, it is everyone around him/her who has faults and they must be punished for those faults.

Lack of Anger: He/she may never express anger. There are some who are happy with whatever you want. On the outside anyway! The passive aggressive may have been taught, as a child, that anger is unacceptable. Hence they go through life stuffing their anger, being accommodating and then sticking it to you in an under-handed way.

Procrastination: The passive aggressive person believes that deadlines are for everyone but them. They do things on their own time schedule and be damned anyone who expects differently from them.

ladyingray on March 13, 2009 at 11:05 AM

That scam is as old as Jimmah Cartah (read:OLD). In my salad days I worked as a cook for an unscrupulous nasty old guy. He had a deal going with a salesman from a meat company: mock up fake orders for other restaurants-when they refuse the order on arrival, nasty old guy would get the meat at a spoilage price.
Back to the main item: doesn’t it seem to make sense that Republicans have less trouble finding capable appointees as we are business oriented rather than scam and theft oriented?
I wouldn’t pick liberals to run businesses any more than I would choose Conservatives to go on welfare and game the system.
Liberal definition of ethics: don’t get caught.

After all, Obama is stressed & POTUS is such a hard job.
Or maybe he’s on ‘leave’, too.

The Chief Information Officer didn’t have information about what his subordinates were doing.

What information would Obama receive from this guy?

The best we can say about Vivek Kundra in this episode is that he’s incompetent as an executive, which thus far puts him at the same level of accomplishment as the man who hired him to work in the White House.

Ah, what a delicious line.

Democrats – The REAL Party of Corruption….!
How many of the new cabinet are tax cheats? Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Maxine Waters and Senator Obama blocked reform of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac several years ago. Bush had his problems, and while the country was concentrating on them, we had the crooks of the other party stealing the people blind….

I would say that “incompetance as an executive” may apply to the Kundra…..but it is a gross understatement for the college kid who is now looting the country from the White House.

He must be really really happy for the opportunity to punish the country for our past sins.

If the saying that “what goes around comes around” happens in this case, and please please let it happen, the residents of the White House are in for some long hard rock-breaking time.

Whats the difference between Jesus and Obama?

Jesus could built a cabinet.

A pun and a double entendre!

I love this Blog.

These gyrations at the WH are getting a bit absurd and the profits to earnings ratio is definitely taking a beating.

I concur.

Not only that, they surround themselves with ‘YES PEOPLE’ who are themselves what ‘ladyingray’ describes.

Any competent chief executive of a firm that size would know how many employees worked for him and how much they cost; in fact, it would be one of the primary issues on their agenda.

So? If anything, this makes Kundra eminently qualified to help administer the trillions upon trillions of dollars the government is adding to its budget each month.

NOBODY has the slightest clue where any of that money’s going. Any competent executive would throw a screaming fit if he had to handle a job like that. But Kundra is clearly perfectly comfortable with it.

Is there anyone in Obama’s so-called cabinet that is competent to do anything?
Is there any democrat in DC who is not corrupt?
Is there any MSM members in DC who are not in the tank for the libs?
We need to take our country back! Glenn Beck is leading a charge today at 5:00 Eastern Time with parties all over the country. And be there at Tea Party 4/15!
