Move over, Britain: Obama alienates another ally

posted at 2:47 pm on March 13, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Foreign Policy, wondering if anyone’s told The One yet that the State Department has an office of protocol for this sort of thing. Maybe he knows and just assumes that if they can’t even do translations anymore, they can’t be trusted with something like this. Or maybe, as with Treasury, he simply forgot to staff the office.

When you’re the world’s biggest celebrity, you don’t have to fret over diplomatic niceties.

Brazil has become a major U.S. trading partner, with cautious economic policies that have helped it weather the crisis better than almost all other major economies. With huge new offshore oil finds and abundant ethanol, Brazil could be key to helping wean the U.S. off Venezuelan crude and shift to cleaner energies.

Still, the White House made several moves interpreted as snubs by the Brazilian media.

Silva aides said the trip was pushed forward from Tuesday because of the St. Patrick’s Day holiday – making Latin America once again look like an afterthought. Then, the White House announcement misspelled his name as “Luis Ignacio” and put “Lula” – a nickname that decades ago became a legal part of the Brazilian leader’s name – in quotes.

The White House quickly corrected the mistake.

Exit question: Any guesses as to what goodies from Best Buy’s discount bin Lula will be getting as his official gift? Someone on Twitter today mentioned baseball cards as a possibility. I like it; he could give him a few new packs every time he comes to visit until he has a complete set.

The greatest fear of any European politician is that America will take them seriously. It’s one thing to wish loudly for Obama while Bush is taking care of business, but once President Obama is a reality, the warmongering neocon cowboy suddenly doesn’t look so bad.

Besides the inferiority of daydreamy liberal ideology as a basis for foreign policy, I think Republicans are so much better at it because they know it won’t be easy. World leaders gave Obama every reason to think his wonderful specialness would be a foreign policy all by itself. Why spend a lot of time learing about a bunch of simpering sycophants? It’s the same syndrome that leads Democrats to fold up like a house of cards when they get the rare grilling from the media: they’re just not used to it, and Republicans are.

The real irony here is that the careerists in the State Department are rabid leftists who hated Bush with a passion. Yet, they seem incapable of getting the filthy liar’s administration to observe the niceties of diplomacy.

Is it incompetence or are they simply unable to get arrogant egos like Hillary Clinton and the filthy liar to understand the importance of these things? After all, Hillary Clinton’s foreign experience consists of dodging fictional snipers and the filthy liar actually pointed to his college transcript when challenged on his experience in these issues.

Bestbuy discount bin?

I know it’s fun to rag on the President. I know he deserves much scorn. But lying about the authenticity of a gift produced by and for the White House in an effort to embarrass Obama is unbecoming.

As are similar claims the dvd’s weren’t encoded for the uk region format.

With Obama’s approval sky high we need to pick and choose what and when we criticize lest we get tuned out by the very people we need to convince because they tire of hearing constant bitching about – at best – exaggerated nonsense.

In 2004 Bush/Cheney screwed us. They threw our party ‘under the bus’ and spent the next four years running us over to make sure we were dead.

Where was their party building? Where was the heir apperant?

In 2004 Karl Rove wrote a book full of checks he knew were going to bounce and knew he had no intention of ever honoring. All the while doing it knowing he would skip town and leave the mess for the suckers remaining to clean up.

I’m now a member of a party/rudderless ship 50+ days removed from the most powerful office in the world and looks and sounds like a bunch of pant wetting malcontents. A party deserted by the big wigs after the carcass has been picked of the choice meat and when only scraps remain.

We are expected to praise the party’s ruination and those that have lead us here.

John McCain didn’t lose the 08 election. Barack Obama didn’t lie cheat or steal it(any more than other Democrats we’ve whooped in thew past).

Bush Cheney and Rove lost us the election in 2004 when they unleashed the social conservatives instead of replacing Cheney on the ticket with their heir apparent and spending the next four years grooming him to take over.

We were left with a bitter primary, an unpopular administration that any nominee would have had to run from, and Democratic momentum that would have elected a ham sandwich. Or a Barack Obama.

barkolounger on March 13, 2009 at 7:35 PM

All along I was thinking it was Biden ‘The Gaffemaster Fantastic’ who would keep me in stitches while the dems ran my country into the toilet.

barkolounger on March 13, 2009 at 7:37 PM

Hey, getalife’s aunt showed up. Classic seminar poster techniques too.

Taking your last claim first, O’bama’s approval isn’t “sky high”. At this point in his only term, Jimmy Carter was at 77%. And the evil Bush was higher as well.

Getting back to your first point, you have to do some research on the rich history of Gifts of State exchanged between world leaders. They are supposed to be something unique, not something mass-produced.

And to add insult to injury, O’bama gave a set of DVDs to a guy who has been totally blind in one eye for decades and is rapidly losing the eyesight on the other. He won’t be watching them anytime soon.

A 30 second wiki search could have told O’bama’s people that he was visually impaired. They didn’t even have time for that, however.

Does anyone get the impression that Obama would like to outsource his role as Head Of State?

In constititional monarchies like Canada or Australia the PM is the leader of the govenrment while the Governor-General handles most of the protocol and diplomatic stuff, except for talks and meetings of a concrete nature.

In the interest of full disclosure I loathe Obama.

Frankly, I have known people like Obama; they are ruthless and driven; they are not attuned to the niceties of diplomacy or decorum. Education may mask it for a while but eventually one will show his/her true colors. Class is class; you either have it or you don’t.

For example George Bush (41)has it in spades. In my opinion he didn’t have much else. His son is in between his father and Obama-a little rough but not uncouth or boorish.

It wouldn’t surprise me one bit that once Obama installs himself as the permanent President of the USA if he offloads these duties to a separate department and only appears after all the diplomacies have been exhausted and he can show up for a phot-op.

I’ve said from the beginning and I stand by the idea that the filthy liar likes the trappings of the Presidency but he has no intention of doing the work that goes along with the job. He likes state dinners, jetting off to distant locales with all the pomp of state visits, the large staff that pampers his every whim….. He just doesn’t like doing the serious stuff that goes along with the job.

To date, the filthy liar has tried to pawn off all his responsibilties on underlings. It is becoming increasingly clear that he won’t be able keep up this tactic much longer. Then watch the filthy liar’s number’s plummet when he suddenly is held responsible for stuff.

A stein of green beer and a “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” button should more than make up for it.

Oh, yeah. A green milkshake, too.

A 30 second wiki search could have told O’bama’s people that he was visually impaired. They didn’t even have time for that, however.

I never said the gift wasn’t tacky, I said don’t bs it. Over selling it turns a gaffe into just more noise coming from us. Another reason to tune us out.

As for Obama’s numbers they are all over the place depending on who is polling but they are all high enough, and his good faith numbers are even higher. A few poor showings in what might very well be outliers is no reason to think people are starting to lose faith and ready to listen to us.

Quite frankly I hope to hell they aren’t looking to us right now because it might just keep them solidly in Obama’s camp.

A bunch of screaming harpies that look a lot and sound a lot like the bed wetting alarmists and extremists that took hold of the Democrats in 04.

It wasn’t until Pelosi convinced the voters she meant it when she said impeachment was off the table that they trusted Democrats with power again.

Maintaining momentum into 08 was in part a result of her keeping that promise.

BTW all of which occurred much to the horror and anguish of the screaming harpies, alarmists, and extremists at kos and such.

The President’s popularity will soon be based on policy results, not expectations. They will have nothing to do with successful disruption or successful framing of the debate.

The American voters know how they feel about the issues that are important to them and will be able to judge whether he has failed to met or exceeded their expectations.

If Obama can blame his failure on obstructionism by a party the voters clearly rebuked then voters will vote to remove the obstruction rather than conceding to the minority.

Overselling the consequences of policies and misrepresenting issues ideologically will allow the administration to continue to marginalize our objections by claiming even success is failure to people ideologically opposed to everything they do.

Every time I see someone on our side call Obama a Communists or Marxist or socialist I wonder if they realize ever time they do it they inoculate Obama from more serious complaints because they have become words stripped of meaning from overuse and misuse. Sigh.

Indeed. Grandparents were first generation German-Americans living in a Polish part of South Chicago (now all of the demographic that worships the filthy liar).

Getalife,
Here’s a head start on your diplomacy education. I did a 30 second search that O and his team never attempted.

http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/tokens_and_treasures/tokens_and_treasures_home.html

Buy the catalog, read it, and then send it to O asap. He needs it.

“Still, the White House made several moves interpreted as snubs by the Brazilian media.”

Brazil must be made to understand that “The One” takes, not gives.
Got it Brazil?
