Maxine Waters intervened with regulators to protect personal investment
posted at 10:48 am on March 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) intervened with regulators on behalf of a bank to which she had personal financial ties, the Wall Street Journal reports. Waters also greased the skids with Treasury to get the bank a meeting it desired. Waters and her husband own as much as $500,000 in OneUnited stock:
Ms. Waters and her husband have both held financial stakes in the bank. Until recently, her husband was a director. At the same time, Ms. Waters has publicly boosted OneUnited’s executives and criticized its government regulators during congressional hearings. Last fall, she helped secure the bank a meeting with Treasury officials.
Her involvement isn’t new. Ms. Waters has detailed her financial ties in a series of federal disclosure forms and has been vocal in public in support of the bank. Those ties, however, have received little public attention. Nor is it well known how the influential lawmaker has over the years acted to support the bank and its executives.
Such potential conflicts of interest are more serious as the banking system’s crisis has led the government to take an increasingly active role in overseeing financial institutions, including OneUnited. The financial-services committee on which Ms. Waters sits oversees banking issues, and the lawmaker is a potential future chairman.
And the LA Times notes that OneUnited got some tasty bailout bucks, too:
Rep. Maxine Waters, one of Los Angeles’ most enduring liberal politicians, has come under scrutiny because of bailout funds that went to a bank in which her husband had owned stock and served on the board.
Waters was a senior member of the congressional committee dealing with the financial crisis when OneUnited Bank — one of the nation’s largest minority-owned institutions — received $12 million in bailout funds.
Her husband, Sidney Williams, served on the bank board until early last year and held at least $500,000 in investments in the bank in 2007, the most recent year for which public financial disclosure statements are available.
A month before Congress enacted the bailout program, Waters helped set up a meeting between the chief executive of the bank, representatives of other financial institutions and Treasury officials.
“When a member of the financial services committee calls, you pay special attention,” said Jeb Mason, who was a high-ranking Treasury official last fall.
Did Americans go deep into debt to send bailout money to politically-connected banks and to prop up the investment portfolios of elected officials? Apparently, yes we did.
Of course, conflicts of interest are nothing new for Democrats on Congressional committees. Barney Frank had a personal relationship with an executive of Fannie Mae while sitting on the same committee, which oversees Fannie Mae operations. Chris Dodd took sweetheart loans from Countrywide Mortgage, one of the malefactors in the subprime-lending collapse. Waters’ connections to OneUnited and her serial conflicts of interest make this look more like the rule for Democrats rather than the exception.
The last time members of Congress intervened with federal regulators in the financial industry on behalf of their own interests, they called the perps the Keating Five. The media ripped the five Senators, including John McCain, who played a more tangential role than the other four — all Democrats. Three of the others actually intervened to stop federal regulators from discovering that Lincoln Savings and Loan, owned by political heavyweight Charles Keating, was insolvent.
During the presidential campaign just a few months ago, Democrats tried to paint McCain as corrupt by blowing his role in the Keating Five out of proportion. In fact, they made it sound as though McCain did essentially what Waters has done here, and screeched about corruption. Now that Waters has been shown to interfere with regulators to protect the personal financial interests of her family and her contributors (OneUnited has generated over $12,000 in donations to Waters), will these same Democrats take action against corruption — as they themselves defined it in the fall of 2008? Or are they more interested in culturing corruption?

Boy, it’d be nice to have a black GOP chairman doing press conferences to point out this kind of corruption.
Oh, we have one of those, but he’s too busy finding fault with the GOP and its likely supporters.

Don’t count on Henry Waxman conducting an investigation. His district is right next to Maxine’s. Birds of a feather, so to speak. Besides, Henry’s too busy investigating the last administration for firing ‘at will’ employees. Priorities ya know. Can’t be bothered with anything else. Gotta purge that Bush ‘cesspool of corruption’.

She is too stupid to rate very highly on the vomit scale.
She is more like a petty thug compared to the rest.

I know Ms. Waters from her time in the California legislature. She is a very unpleasant person who has left ruffled feathers and hard feelings in her wake even with nominal allies. She is very vulnerable on the self-dealing and corruption issue if enough of her peers are willing to stand up to her extremely well crafted barrage of racism allegations. She will not go down easily but she is more vulnerable than she appears. Her safe district is actually a liability for her. If she goes, there will be another left wing Democrat waiting in the wings and there are plenty of them in line.

Well, they aren’t strong words. I live now and for several years in Wilmington, NC. I have business in Fayetteville …I assure you nothing in Fayetteville is even close to what some areas of South Central are.
You have 650,000 residents living there, 650,000 residents, whom over 75% live like your few thousand.
It has changed in the past decade, from 70% black to about 35% black, 45% hispanic…which causes a whole new layer of problems.
How bad is it…in one year I had three store owners shot and killed…one a 75 year old women, who got nervous and had a difficult time opening her register drawer with a shotgun to her head, she wasn’t quick enough and Mary’s head was blown off…with her grown kids watching.
Drive down Figueroa street at 10 PM, or Century…behind most every liquor store you have couches, like a living room set up for the regulars to sit around and drink, like it is there private bar. Then drive down the side streets near 54th, but don’t get out…pass by the once great Crenshaw district, used to be the center of commerce.
She has done nothing to improve the citizens plight…what has improved is the citizens often get together and do it on their own…churches are instrumental. Like St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, and many others.
No, there are not harsh enough words that describe a leader whose followers are suffering, and they do little to assist…but they only focus on their own power.

Time and time again our side refuses to get in these bastards faces about their misconduct. No one called out Dodd or Frank about their actions. I watched nutless wonder little Lyndsay Graham sit shoulder to shoulder w/Schumer this weekend while Schumer said the most ridiculous things. I did not expect Graham to call him a name but he didn’t even roll his eyes, shake his head, or challenge Schumer at all. No wonder we keep losing. This type, and various other types, of unethical behavior runs rampant in the Democrat’s blood line. They don’t seem too concerned about getting caught either. In fact, they flaunt it in our faces. And it’s easy to see why.
It’s the same old story all over Capital Hill among the Democrats and not a single solitary one, from A to Z, has been called on the carpet or even censured, much less prosecuted, for any of it.
But don’t tell any of this to the Kool-Aid guzzling voters who are still reeling from the dizzying effects the Obamassiah has caused them since he put his spell on them. It matters not.
Standards and expectations for thee, but not for me.
Why and How can these shenanigans possibly be condoned so often for so long?

I watched Bill O’Reilly go bat shi% crazy on Barney Frank
a few months back. I enjoyed seeing Frank get “called out” but ultimately it did nothing to Barney Franks reputation at all. In fact, Lesley Stahl of 60 Minutes kind of played with the idea that he’s (Frank) the smartest man in Washington. Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, Frank and Schumer all make me want to puke everytime I see them.
I guess this means that whatever the GOP decides to do in the future will be just fine with the MSM, right?

I wasn’t trying to compare Fayetteville to South Central in importance or size, just in the relative phenomina. I mean, an area owned by liberal democrats where an underside of society lives that seems to have no shot of pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.
I was actually only referring to the reference about domestic servant and the term you used. I should probably rail against PC more, but I have a real hard time with that single word.

Miwagi on March 13, 2009 at 5:27 PM
Of course not. She’s a black woman who invested in what she liked to call a ‘black bank’ (she made reference to ‘white banks’ as well in the WSJ piece which–if a white politico made similar remarks s/he would be drawn and quartered) and serves under a black president. They’re not going to touch her with a ten-foot pole for fear of being branded as racists.
redfoxbluestate on March 13, 2009 at 5:29 PM
I think the term is despicable, which is why it fits her…no disrespect for a group of people who have had their culture torn apart by people like her.
The black community once had a lower crime rate then the white community, lower out of wedlock birthrate, less divorce, their work ethic was next to none…then along came the “great society” and the black leaders that took, but never gave. Who twisted Martin Luther Kings words, and let their great honorable society wither, just as it was emerging from decades of being an outcast, they were emerging as a powerful, spiritual, middle class.
But once in power, these greedy, selfish “leaders”, sold out to the unions, the democrat party…and they in turn pushed back against the one party that led them to freedom, opened schools for them, and tried to pass the first civil rights bill only to be blocked by the dems.
Eisenhower, one of the real unsung heroes of the emerging civil rights movement, was discarded…and replaced by politicians with low expectations, and an even lower respect for the black community.

I had to leave the state, what with Boxer, Feinstein, and Waters as my DC representatives. It was too much.
