Inevitable: Media needles Palin for requesting earmarks
posted at 9:00 pm on March 13, 2009 by Allahpundit
What better way to wind down a long week than with an angry 800-comment thread? MSNBC’s antagonism is predictable, but hearts will break at the thought of one of the few reporters the righty blogosphere respects piling on. Et tu, Tapper? Palin’s spokesman, Bill McAllister, tries to set the record straight:
“Let’s start with the overwhelming mischaracterization of Gov. Palin’s stance on earmarks that has been repeated and repeated since Aug. 29,” McAllister wrote. “The governor never said that earmarks should be abolished or that the State of Alaska wouldn’t seek or accept any. Didn’t happen. What she said well before she was a national candidate (going back at least to October of 2007) was that earmark reform was necessary and the state would need to rely less on federal money than it had been.”
McAllister then pointed out that Palin made 51 earmark requests for the FY 2008 budget, totaling $256 million; and 31 requests totaling $197 million, for the FY 2009 budget.
McAllister said that for next year’s budget, Gov. Palin will only make eight requests, totaling $69 million, which will include “six ongoing federal appropriations and just two new projects: an upgrade at the Kodiak Missile Defense Facility, which is relevant to national security, and a bridge replacement critical to construction of the pending Alaska natural gas pipeline, also in the national interest.”
Follow the link for Tapper’s pungently snarky response. Exit question: Who’s going to be our favorite White House correspondent now? That guy who called the Democrats ugly looks promising.

I don’t care about Palins perceived hypocrisy, she’s a politician, show me one that isn’t a hypocrite. That said why should people that consider themselves fiscal conservatives be defending any earmarks?

God love ya Allah, just the way I wanted to end my week.
Tapper, who I’ll admit has been kinda fair up until his last 2 stories about Palin, comes off in the last half of his article is a snotty childish POS. Palin’s press release and Mr. Bill lay it out quite clearly. I won’t repeat the details of the TWO additional earmarks she requested. The other defenders above have done that quite nicely.
I’m finding MSNBC is getting ridiculous, they are scared sh**less of Palin. Oh, and then he tries messing with my other favorite lady Michelle too, I’d like to see a Cuda/Michelle debate w/ Shuster, they chew him up and spit him out to the garbage.
Yep, that’s another $25 for SarahPAC…. keep it coming MSM fools. Oh and thank you Allah for the Friday night entertainment.

John McCain October 13, 2008:
at a townhall meeting in Minnesota:
female Republican: Senator McCain, I’m afraid of Obama and what he might do.
Senator McCain: “Senator Obama is a decent family man and A PERSON YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE SCARED OF AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.”
I wish some wiseass hotshot reporter or reporterette would have the nerve to ask McCain the same question or make the same comment and I would give anything to be present when he answers that question now, after the Messiah has literally destroyed 18% of America’s wealth.

Tapper ruthlessly clubbed both the Clintons on Obama’s behalf during the Dem primaries. I think he worked out a deal, because even though he’s supposedly a tough critic, he gets priority seating at press conferences and often gets the first question. No truth to power moments from him; it’s all run up the flagpole first.
chunderroad on March 13, 2009 at 10:24 PM
In order to be a hypocrite, you speak one way and act in another fashion.
Palin has never stated that earmarks are bad. She stated the back room deals and wasteful earmarks are bad.
She also stated that she would attempt to ease Alaska off of earmarks.
She has not been a hypocrite on this issue at all

dhunter on March 13, 2009 at 10:29 PM
I don’t think anyone “should” defend earmarks as a fiscal conservative. That being said, some balance is in order. If the trend of earmarks is going down, as Palin’s spokesman noted, she should get some credit for that. It’s hard to govern a state without allowing the budget to creep up year after year. Her fiscal discipline may not be perfect, but it’s a heckuva lot better than most of the other viable candidates we have out there.
cs89 on March 13, 2009 at 10:29 PM
Thats a valid question, but I think AP could have made a half hearted attempt to play devils advocate to Tapper.
Because he WONT, I felt it necessary to try and defend her.
Amadeus on March 13, 2009 at 10:29 PM
Yeah, or pledging to go line by line, elminating all earmarks…well, except for those 9,000-some-odd…next time, he promises, it will be clean. Yep.
ddrintn on March 13, 2009 at 10:30 PM
Earmark reform needs to come from the federal level. There will always be the line of thinking by state legislators and governors that the federal government took my citizens money and I am just trying to get it back. This reform will have to come from a principled President who says:
Enough! No more earmarks and we are cutting federal taxes to offset the end of this practice. States, if you need the money, get some cajones and ask your citizens for the extra funds!

I had always assumed until yesterday that McCain had always decided not to go after Jeremiah Wright, but I read online that on April 28, 2008 he had made a decision to attack Wright and even at that time repeated inflammatory words that Wright had used and then contrast that to October 15th when a spolesman of his said that “He (Wright) was a central figure in Obama’s life, shaping Obama’s thinking, and he (Wright) made extreme radical comments that are borderline anti-American.” (but John McCain feels it would be out of bounds)
What changed McCain? Don’t you think your fellow citizens should have known about this before they voted in the advance polls or on election day?
And by the way while you were telling the American people that all Bill Ayres was was ‘a washed up terrorist, you conveniently failed to mention in a Weatherman meeting that Ayres told those gathered there (including an undercover FBI agent) that once the revolution was ensconced, any counterevolution would have to be met through the construction of re-education camps, but alas for those 25m capitalists who could not be re-educated, they would be executed.
By the way yesterday Obama was talking again yesterday about setting up a civilian national security force (can we say Brownshirts).
Senator McCain, “Do I have anything to fear from Obama?”

It’s funny because the same people who (quite justifiably) rip crazy liberals for worshipping Obama do the exact same thing with Palin.
She represents the people of Alaska, the feds are spending, all states are in economic turmoil – the only people who should be getting ripped on this are the people that are refusing federal aid, because they’re putting their future political ambitions over the needs of the people from their state.
You may not like the stimulus, but to punish the people from your own state to prove your ideological purity is insane. I don’t like Palin but I’d be more concerned if she wasn’t asking for money.
Proud Rino on March 13, 2009 at 10:57 PM
I have this theory that all the Palin worshippers on the internet are all just part of a very elaborate reality tv show where everyone is trying to irritate me by being incredibly stupid all the time. This theory gains even more credence whenever I observe people’s behavior in traffic and in social situations.
Proud Rino on March 13, 2009 at 11:00 PM
Huh? You say Palin fans are like O-bots who can’t criticize her but then find a reason not to slam her for earmarks, which is what the so-called Palin idolaters are doing?
There’s quite a bit of difference between an O-bot and most fans of Sarah Palin. I don’t worship Sarah Palin, nor do I look at her as some sort of messiah.

America needs more energy…our opponent is against producing it…government is too big…he wants to grow it. Congress spends too much…he promises more. It delivers natural gas to the lower 48. Obama has said he wants to lessen our dependence on oil. He wants to tax coal companies until into bankruptcy and pass those costs onto consumers; he said energy costs would be “crippling.” That’s no exaggeration. It would nearly destroy the US economy. Who said I was a republican? I guess the 2 party thinking is all you wrap your mind around little Rino Friend.
I merely translated my outrage into something you would understand. Liberals use Nixon as the Boogeyman under the bed for every rotten thing to happen in the 60′s to 70′s.
Nixon cleaned up the mess that JFK got us into, LBJ screwed up, and guess who ended the Vietnam war???? Speechless now?
You and me both. Nixon did alot of great things even though he had alot of inner demons he wrestled with. The only difference between Richard Nixon and any other President is Nixon got caught. If what I’ve seen from the Obama Administration is any clue as to what will happen, get ready for alot of senat hearings that begin with:
“What did Obama know, and when did he know it?”
portlandon on March 13, 2009 at 11:36 PM
The premise of this statement proves the exact opposite of its presumed intent.
To speak of a single-minded “O-bot” and individual, distinguishable “fans of Sarah Palin” is absurd. No political party has the monopoly on sycophancy. In your eyes, Palin can do no wrong just like Obama can do no wrong in the narrow view of Obamanauts. You’re all sucking Kool-Aid — hard.
Republicans are just as guilty of spending us into economic hell as Dems. Dems just have the current bully-pulpit. Mark Sanford is a lone-voice — he is not an example of consistent Republican thrift.
Donating to SarahPAC seems to prevent some folks from offering reasonable scrutiny to Palin. If Meghan McCain got knocked up with no hubby and a not-so-swift boyfriend….um wow. You guys would be apoplectic with your attacks on her weight, looks, money and stupidity. Yet, she’s not much older than Bristol. Point is, a lot of Palin supporters are full of shit.
Sarah Palin, however, has proved to be much smarter than most of her supporters and all of her media critics. She appears to be playing the right tune to remain viable and intriguing. She will do what she needs to for her state. Then she will reemerge as the kickass, neo-feminist, not-so-darkhorse candidate. The only thing that can stop her is the gaggle of mouth-breathers supporting her.
Obama maniacs are a dreadful crowd. Palin maniacs are their drunk cousins. Certainly there are sober, thoughtful advocates on both sides who can logically string together fact-based narratives explaining their politics. But many of the loudest voices sound like crackless crack addicts.

Anybody remember that infomercial for Oxygen Blast with the dude from Greatest American Hero?
The Race Card on March 13, 2009 at 11:37 PM
Then say she requested less earmarks, she didn’t “halved spending”.
So she requested a total of eight earmarks, not two.
To start with, there isn’t going to be a pipeline anytime in the near future. It wasn’t economically viable when gas was at $12.00 MMBTU it sure isn’t viable when gas is below $4.00 per MMBTU. Besides the current proven reserves in the lower 48 are far more vast then what’s in Alaska. The pipeline may benefit Alaska but it sure isn’t anything that’s vital to the country right now.

My Gosh.
David Frum..I mean Race card, you have made me see the error of my ways. What was I thinking? How could I support Sarah Palin as much as someone supports Barrack Obama? It is not like Palin needs defenders right? Obama hasn’t been accused of faking parenthood, or his children haven’t been demonized or anything. But when they do You can bet when it does we will take the high road and not fall into that kind of gutter politics.
Look,Sarah Palin has her flaws, her supporters don’t need to bring them up and wear them like some kind of scarlett letter. I am no Palin apologist, but dammit one of the best political barn burners comes only so often and I am not going to sit around and let the small idiots trash her anymore than I would let them trash Ronald Reagan or my Mother.
Fu*k you and the self righteous infant high chair you sit in. Palin supporters don’t need to be lectured about insults. If its one they’ve learned early its that people don’t debate fair when Palin is involved.
You would be spitting nails if somebody dared attack Sanford’s daughters, spouse, firebomed his church, and was the constant media ratings grabber.
In conclusion,
Piss off.

Six of eight were ongoing programs, so she requested two.
As for the pipeline, I already explained how the mainland would benefit from natural gas in the long run. It doesn’t matter what the current market is; when there is increased demand from all other alternatives (as this administration has explicitly promised) being taxed beyond affordability, then it will make perfect economic sense. And the plans have been going along smoothly for the pipeline.
Besides drastically reducing earmarks, Sarah Palin has used line item vetoes to cut the state budget, halving spending.
chunderroad on March 13, 2009 at 11:56 PM
I’ll tell you what we’ll fess up to, Athensboy: Obama is the Worst. President. Ever.
Dude has basically ruined the economy for a generation in just six weeks. His supporters are f*****g morons, and deserve the poverty they just voted for.
Blacksheep on March 13, 2009 at 11:58 PM
None of the so-called stimulus went toward saving the economy or creating jobs. It was neither timely, targeted or specific. It was a trillion dollars to mostly Democrat special interests. Fess up to that one. The entire country is paying for this boondoggle, so why should they not designate some of that spending for their own districts rather than Planned Parenthood, Acorn, Amtrack and Detroit?
chunderroad on March 14, 2009 at 12:01 AM
Your boss, Axelrod, suggested Obama veto it. Guess what? He didn’t, just hid in a closet and signed that blasted POS. You can poke at Sarah or her fans but Obama was elected promising to reform that crap, he chose to ignore his promise. It is no shock to me, I never believed him anyway.
More to the point than the 3% of the total spending that comes from earmarks, the bill was so completely irresponsible that combined with Porkulus it will quadruple the deficit. Wow, what an accomplishment with only 50 days under his belt.
msmveritas on March 14, 2009 at 12:04 AM
This is the same semantics people always use when excusing poor governing. The fact is she’s requesting millions in earmarks. The fact is she massively increased the size and cost of her government. Period.
A pipeline may benifit the nation some day, a long, long time from now. When it makes economic sense to build it. That isn’t now or anytime in the near future. Do you have any idea how much natural gas reserves we have in the lower 48? And I’m not talking offshore, and these proven reserves are growing not decreasing. Louisiana has just as much gas reserves as Alaska, Texas six times as much. This pipeline idea isn’t moving smoothly, it’s DOA. The pipeline made a good soundbite but it’s no where near a reality, it’s just a fantasy.
lowandslow on March 14, 2009 at 12:18 AM
How is repairing our missile defense system and a bridge “increasing the size of government”?
It makes economic sense for the the country to repair the bridge for the pipeline before energy costs are crippling. Don’t you believe that infrastructure projects put people to work who then spend money which then stimulates the economy? Do you want America to fail?
chunderroad on March 14, 2009 at 12:29 AM
Not all earmarks are bad if they go to worthy projects unlike studying bear poop or something or hippy museums. It seems to me Sarah’s requests are reasonable and worthy. Earmarks are part of the budget process that has been shamefully abused in recent years but that does mean they are all bad. Sarah is right the process needs to be more open and each item justified by open debate.

You’re kidding right? Are you telling me the size and expense of government didn’t increase in Alaska under her watch?
As for your attempt to smear me as unpatriotic for telling the truth of this pipeline fiasco, I don’t even know what to say to that. Building or fixing a bridge for an imaginary pipeline stimulates the economy? There isn’t going to be a pipeline, why is that so hard to understand? There is no money to build it and it wouldn’t be economically viable for the producers to use it even if there was. It’s just not happening.
lowandslow on March 14, 2009 at 12:41 AM
It’s not Sarah worship. It’s simply that she’s the best chance I think to:
Lower my taxes
Cut wasteful government spending
Keep the military funded, including missle defense
Push more ethics in government
Reduce deficit
Cut red tape to allow more domestic sources of energy, thereby reducing unemployment and the trade deficit
Indirectly help keep the US Dollar from weakening by disciplined fiscal policy
Choose interpretationists for the Supreme Court to prevent the Court from making law and usurping the power from the Constitution and the legislature
Protect our 1st and 2nd Amendment rights
Sarah displays courage which makes the chances of the above happening seem higher. She walks the walk on many issues once you really dig up the facts and closely examine them.
Nothing fanatical about it. Just good sense given the political enviroment.
There are some other Republicans too that look promising, but none as promising as Sarah at this time.
Sapwolf on March 14, 2009 at 12:45 AM
Did anyone dog Kerry in 2004 when he went back to the Senate to try and smear his political record going forward?
Have we vetted his every campiagn word from 2004?
At what point does it backfire on these people to focus on Palin AFTER the race?
It just pi$$es me off that even in victory the democrats are in personal destruction mode. How can such a mean spirited party and MSM be popular at all with the American people? We have this huge crisis and Tapper has to float off and take shots at Palin? What is there too much of a lull in the action that Palin is back on the radar?

I look at things from a political point of view. Sarah has the best chance I think to:
1)Raise as much money as Obama does
2)Generate miilions of millions of enthusiastic volunteers to GOTV
3)To get conservatives elected in Congress in 2010 and 2012
4)To take the fight to Obama and expose him for the fraud that he is, like she did in the 2008 campaign
5)To be able to attract independent voters and more women to her side
6)To attract libertarian voters who have tended to vote 3rd party or stay home in the past
7)To mobilize millions and millions of supporters to counteract the nefarious tactics of Obama and the MSM
8)To take back the White House in 2012
