Video: Meghan McCain in heroic one-woman crusade to turn GOP centrist or something
posted at 5:15 pm on March 12, 2009 by Allahpundit
She means well (I think) so I don’t want to dump on her, but a few things here. One: She needs to knock off calling Coulter anti-semitic. I’m not in the habit of defending AC but that’s simply a bad rap. Two: What’s with the Kathleen Parker-ish self-congratulations about being a lone voice brave enough to cry out in the wilderness about the party’s message? Frum was on this very network just the other day pitching the same thing. Surely that tendency was a contributing factor in the Times hiring Ross Douthat. There’s plenty of media fame and fortune to be had in being a Republican who criticizes Republicans. (Except for me!) Three: Beyond rehashing her pop’s aversion to earmarks, does she have any concrete policy suggestions on appealing to young voters or is this purely a stylistic matter of pushing back against the right’s provocateurs? Every time I see her on TV she’s talking about how much she loves the GOP without ever explaining why. What’s the attraction? Small government (in theory), social issues, what? Exit quotation: “If Meghan McCain were serious about inspiring an influx of gen X and Y-ers, why not rage against the out-of-touch elected officials in Washington who’ve ran the GOP into the ground and still struggle with a cogent message?”

Man she is hot…dumb as a bag of hammers but hot. She could be the next

Opinions always matter. Not, however, as a serious commentary on the way forward for the GOP. If 24-year-olds ran the world why would we need the 44-year-olds? It really scares me that you don’t understand this.

Didn’t think that Coulter had bothered answering McCain. And, why did she choose Maddow’s show–she probably could have found her way onto a conservative talk show if she wished. Does make her political leanings very suspect.
jeanie on March 12, 2009 at 6:23 PM
That wouldn’t be a fight, it’d be an execution.
Five minutes in, Megs would be crying like, well, a little girl.
“WHAAAAH! WHY ARE YOU CONSERVATIVES SO MEAN TO ME AND MY DADDY!?! WHAAAAAAH!”
I’d rather see Coulter crush someone on the left who, at the very least, would give us the exasperated sighs and cricular logic that makes them so entertaining when challenged.

The Ugly American on March 12, 2009 at 6:25 PM
As bad as Kerry was and is, at least his daughters didn’t think they were pundits after he lost.
Speedwagon82 on March 12, 2009 at 6:25 PM
Does she not realize she is being used by these clowns? I heard she was on the CBS Early Show with Harry Smith(who couldn’t stop crying after Obama won, but yet denies he’s biased). They eat up a R bashing another R like a shit sandwich and beg for more. At least she’s picking the shows with the worst ratings.
gsherin on March 12, 2009 at 6:25 PM
Exactly. At this point in time, Ann Coulter is a seasoned political pundit. Meghan McCain is flighty 24-year-old whose only qualification for getting on national TV is her dad is the cranky old bastard who just lost a Presidential election.

Meghan needs to ride off into the sunset.
This morning on F & F, they showed a clip of Bill O’Reilly saying he had asked her to be on his show, but no reply. She says they never contacted her, but she would definitely go on. Im thinking Meghan shouldnt be messing around with Ann Coulter.

Does she do anything worthwhile with her vapid little self?
red131 on March 12, 2009 at 6:31 PM
Does she have a real job?
Wethal on March 12, 2009 at 6:31 PM
Has Hannity or Greta etc invited her on their shows? Greta might be a little kinder but the others would not–guess she knows this! But to get your so-called message across that you go on far lefty shows does make it pretty clear that she’s not moderate, she’s Dem.

Meghan is pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, etc., etc., etc. Kinda like my governator – he claimed to be socially liberal but also a fiscally conservative Republican. That is, until two weeks ago when he signed a budget that raised our taxes in many ways.
Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice . . .

Exactly, conservatism didn’t fail, a mixed message and a run for the (left) border did.
Speakup on March 12, 2009 at 6:41 PM
This what the MSM does so well: pick off moderates and turn them into pundits to attack the conservative movement.
Meghan wants more than her 15 minutes of fame; of course it doesn’t matter to her if she sells out her father’s party as well.
technopeasant on March 12, 2009 at 6:42 PM
Ah yes, and just one more that wouldn’t piss on the best part of you.
BigWyo on March 12, 2009 at 6:42 PM
That the best the Democrats could scrape up is the last kid to get picked for dodge ball makes me think they’re more desperate than I’d thought. Excellent.
PS: Cuda, MM and Meghan Kelley are hotter than Maverick Spawn.
chunderroad on March 12, 2009 at 6:45 PM
She’s a little bee-atch. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to find out that she was Palin’s saboteur after the election.
The other night she was on the Hannity panel and he set her up by asking each of them to name two new leaders of the Republican party. SE Cupp said Palin and Romney. The democrat guy said Romney and Jindal I think. Well old Megan said Jindal. She claims she is very close to him and his family and knows him well. Sean pressed her for a 2nd name and she hemmed and hawed about how there wasn’t anyone else that she knew very well that she could recommend. Total diss of Palin. It was ridiculous. I wish you all could see the clip.
mrsmwp on March 12, 2009 at 6:45 PM
Also, No disrespect to the Hiltons who are big GOP contributors.

I saw some reference on the intertubes to her being an “aspiring designer.”
So to answer your question: no.
Y-not on March 12, 2009 at 6:51 PM
Why would she pick Jindal? He’s at least as socially conservative as Palin… more, if you toss in the intelligent design stuff.
Y-not on March 12, 2009 at 6:52 PM
The economy into the toilet and are enacting foolish policies that will keep it there, namely the Democratic Party.
Oh, well that wouldn’t be all B-Partisany and stuff would it? More fun to rip Republicans.
Enough Allah, McCain, the current economic mess is a Democrat mess and the future economic mess will be a Democrat mess with the help of a few RINO’s.
dhunter on March 12, 2009 at 6:53 PM
I saw that as well, it was clearly a diss of Palin. And the idea that the GOP needs to be more moderate? Please. Every time a “moderate” GOP candidate runs he/she loses! Ever hear of Bob Dole? John McCain? Give me a break.

I hope this dumbass doesn’t somehow believe that Palin lost the election for her father. He did that too himself. The odds were stacked against him as it was, but after he voted for the stupid bailout I knew we were screwed for 4 years with Obama(even though he voted for it too). Her dad has had to endure some horrible things serving this country, but that doesn’t mean he’s infallable like anyone else.

MEGHAN MCCAIN SAID RECENTLY ON HER TWITTER ACCOUNT:
“wow, response to Maddow show has been INCREDIBLE! possibly one of the defining moments in my career… thanks everyone!!!” –http://twitter.com/McCainBlogette/status/1318672245
TheMightyQuinn on March 12, 2009 at 6:56 PM
She blogs on a left wing site, goes on left wing TV shows and trashes right wingers, she votes for Democrats except when her old man is the nominee and only became a Republican as a gift to her father. Meanwhile she never has a bad word to say about the Obama’s administration extremism and never has a good thing to say about being a conservative. Yeah, that sounds like a winning example to follow for the Republican party.
echosyst on March 12, 2009 at 6:56 PM
Meghan McCain is a sad-sack just like her father. She is attempting to push her Republican RINO agenda. She’s an uninteresting dullard and she appears to be following, in her dullard father’s footsteps.
Ann Coulter was correct about John McCain.

Wish I had seen that one. Looking at her pix, I’d guess that she has not had much in the way of ‘life experience’. She’s still smiling pertly at the camera and absolutely sure that we cannot help but take her logical and obvious message to heart, can we? If I were Meghan, I would lay off Coulter since AC just might notice her at some point and start to add to Meg’s life experience.
jeanie on March 12, 2009 at 7:00 PM
Sorry, Meghan isn’t hot enough or intellectual enough to make me watch a video with Maddow in it.

There I said it.
Papa_P on March 12, 2009 at 7:02 PM
She’s young. Inexperienced. Sheltered to some degree.
I have a hard time taking her seriously in terms of GOP politics or American politics in general. When she starts talking specifics, somebody please let me know.
itzWicks on March 12, 2009 at 7:02 PM
I really don’t care what John McCain or his daughter have to say.
They are generally wrong more than right.
By the way, how’s that campaign finance reform workin out for you John?
Kind of handed your own ass to Obama didn’t ya?
Any other policies you’d like to share like maybe amnesty and social security benefits for illegals?

DrMagnolias on March 12, 2009 at 7:07 PM
How in the hell can anyone think she’s even close to being the only one publicly saying the Republican Party is too extreme? It’s complete bollocks, of course, but tons are saying it.
OneGyT on March 12, 2009 at 7:07 PM
Did I read somwhere that she was an Art History major? Now there’s an education that prepares you for politics if I’ve ever heard one.
jeanie on March 12, 2009 at 7:08 PM
And that’s the key right there. I truly believe the GOP can be a “big tent” party when it comes to social moderates and even liberals. I consider myself moderate on social issues, but I feel right at home in the GOP(most of the time anyway) because I’m a fiscal conservative.
That’s why we welcome people like Rudy and Mitt and Ahnuld(before we realized he was a tax and spend sellout). As long as you believe in small government, low taxes, and personal responsibility, you have a place in the conservative movement.
The reason the right never warmed up to McCain was because he was wishy washy on taxes, he was in favor of a mortgage bailout, he voted for TARP, he supported crap-and-trade, he supported amnesty, and he co-sponsored a terrible campaign finance bill. Whoever we nominate in 2012 better not fit that description or Obama will win in a cakewalk.
Doughboy on March 12, 2009 at 7:11 PM
Did the kid fall in love with the lime light when her father was running for President? It seems she wants to see herself on camera is it for her friends look I’m on TV.
Dr Evil on March 12, 2009 at 7:12 PM
You’d think that the liberal media would have a better spokesperson on their shows if the viewpoint were so widespread.
I guess Michael Steele can’t be everywhere.
Y-not on March 12, 2009 at 7:15 PM
“Republican Party is too extreme”
Will some one please clarify for me just exactly what the GOP must do or become to be defined as ‘less extreme’? Children like Meghan apparently run from place to place saying this, but seldom list specifics. List of problem areas:pro-life,anti gay marriage, amnesty, smaller gov. and lower taxes(not necessarily in that order) But, maybe I’m taking a chance here, but if the GOP switches on these(and whatever else)wouldn’t we then be Democrats? Just what must happen to please the likes of Meghan McCain?
jeanie on March 12, 2009 at 7:24 PM
I’m sure that you are a nice young woman but please go away. Your name is giving you notoriety you haven’t earned.
Mason on March 12, 2009 at 7:32 PM
Appealing to the “middle” is a shell game. Republicans would pander to moderates who then abandon them on election day. Meanwhile they alienate the base in the process. The R’s can’t win without the base, period. The few Meghan McCain’s we might pick up (which will be next to none) will not offset a demoralized base.
The other issue is principals. Are we going to stand for any or not? I would rather lose and know that our ideals are intact, there will be other elections. If we are going to be the “Democrat Lite” party I will just stay home and disengage. We cannot be the party that promises sugar to everyone, that is not what we are about. Any time we have done that we fail.
echosyst on March 12, 2009 at 7:35 PM
If she would stop selling her position as a lifestyle choice, she might have a chance at being taken more seriously. As it is, she’s a bimbo version of Rod Dreher.

Plus, there’s little reason to vote Lite when the full octane party is just one button over.
I think it’s instructive to note that her dad was basically Lite and yet got excoriated in the general election as being far right. No matter your position, the Left will move the goalposts on you. So as you say, it’s best to stick with your principles.
Meghan McCain would have the Democrats dictate our policy positions. And sorry, but that’s lunacy.

Dr Evil on March 12, 2009 at 7:44 PM
Meghan, Meghan… This word “extreme”. Extreme is when they chop off your head for not being of the correct religion or sect thereof.
At your tender age, you may have “extreme” confused with “principled”… both hold firm beliefs, except one kills people who don’t also hold them, while the other tries to debate them and change their minds.
Somewhere in between are the media “watchdogs” who try to confuse young people, such as yourself, as to which are which.
drunyan8315 on March 12, 2009 at 7:49 PM
And one other thing…I thought we were the meritocratic party. Since when do we give credibility to someone based on her last name? How does she get the idea that she can remake the GOP? When she puts in the time in the trenches like, oh, Bill Buckley, then I’ll be more inclined to listen to her ideas. As it is though, I see a callow milquetoast who wants to be hip while flattering herself with a martyr complex.
JohnTant on March 12, 2009 at 7:50 PM
She is sooo wrong. The reason the right couldn’t get behind McCain is he’s too middle of the road. He NEVER should have gotten the republican nomination.

She’s 24, with a blog.
No,a Blogette:Very cute. Yes, I saw that. She is pictured in some kind of beret looking seductively out of the corner of her eyes. The impression of immaturity and self-absorption is quite apparent. Look, that’s OK–she’s entitled, but she is not entitled to tell conservatives how to make themselves over in her image in order to appeal to some demographic she imagines is out there because that’s all she knows. She’s presumptous and offends more than converts and seems too immature to notice.
jeanie on March 12, 2009 at 8:01 PM

Hmmm, instead of constantly b!tch!ng about what is wrong with the GOP, howsabouts she tell us what was so bad about the Democrat Party which drove her to register as a Republican in the first place?
Seems to me that she and her ilk are basically Democrats and simply have registered GOP in order to come and b!tch about why the GOP isn’t Democrat enough.
Does anyone even know what Paris McCain, Frum, et all finds bad about the DNC and attractive about the GOP to align themselves as they are?
All I see when I read Paris McCain, Frum and their ilk is someone going “okay, the Democrats are where we want them to be, now, let’s go register as GOPers and see if we can get that Party to go Left as well and have both Parties basically the same”.
Seriously, if Paris McCain finds the GOP so problematic, why did she join the damn Party to begin with? I actually LEFT the Party after her father was nominated, because it no longer represented my principles. Usually you only join a Party when it represents your principles. I haven’t read anything from her explaining one way or another why the Democrats don’t represent her views and why the Republicans do. All I read from her is how the GOP needs to be more like Democrats. Why? There is already a Democrat Party. If she likes those views, then go be a part of that Party and leave this Party the f*** alone!
Michael in MI on March 12, 2009 at 9:35 PM
Yup she’s a hottie. Was she saying something in the video?
BadMojo on March 12, 2009 at 9:48 PM
Hot – I don’t think so. I caught her on Fox & Friends this morning and Doocy made her stand and walk over to O’Reilly’s set 15 feet away. Seeing her walk, it became obvious she’s experiencing much more than the “freshman 15″. She’s pushing 180 – 200 lbs and is wearing all black to hide it. Too bad, her mom’s still hot and an amazing woman if you watched the profile of her at the Republican Convention, but Megan’s a vacuous, empty-headed, plump little girl. They’d call off the fight in the first round if she went toe-to-toe with Ann Coulter.
PatMac on March 12, 2009 at 9:49 PM
How about she holds hands with the old man and crosses the aisle and stays there with him.
HonestConservative on March 12, 2009 at 9:49 PM
Megan is like her father and misses the point… it’s not about being “republican”, it’s about the ideology… about being “right”… having morals and knowing when we make mistakes… having a moral compass to keep us on track and get back on track when we fall.
Many people who are tired of politics are 6:00 news arm chair researchers who think that all politicians lie… if they only did the research they’d see that the majority of the right do not lie and the majority of the left do. The left have no moral compass, believe that they don’t have to answer for their actions unless they get caught, and believe right and wrong are relative.
Ditz.

To be clear, AnninCA is a Democrat who posts at NQ, a good moderate but not a Republican.
chunderroad on March 12, 2009 at 10:29 PM
John McCain is a Republican only because he found himself on the wrong side of the Vietnam War where the Dems were concerned. His daughter is a spoiled rich girl who wants to be a designer, except her dad’s too uncool. She wants to go to art school, or maybe she did, but that’s a hostile environment, as well. She feels politics is her birthright, except despite her father’s accommodating nature, he is still at the end of a long line of people who have already kissed Obama’s ass and gotten favors. He’s been in DC too long. He wants goodies, but his party is out of power after four years. And now his fat kid is a hooker.

Someone needs to ask Meghan if Gay Marriage is such a winning issue why did Prop 8 lose? See an airhead like Meghan doesn’t bother to do the math on what is and is not a winning issue she just assumes that gay marriage is a winnning issue that if the Republican party adopted it would gain more members than it loses.
Second Meghan isn’t excited about being on Hannity but is excited about being on Maddow. Does any one think that this is a sign of being incompetent of what is going on around you?
Conan on March 12, 2009 at 11:09 PM
Where conservatives have gone wrong is that we have not been extreme enough. Since Obama took office there has been an intensive effort to water down conservatism and turn the Republican party into something the base doesn’t want. This has got to be orchestrated by those who controls what happens in the GOP. Can’t wait to see who they put out next. Michael Steele. Meghan McCain. Who is next? If people like Meghan McCain get what they want there will be little difference between the right and left and that’s exactly what they want.
