Video: Meghan McCain in heroic one-woman crusade to turn GOP centrist or something
posted at 5:15 pm on March 12, 2009 by Allahpundit
She means well (I think) so I don’t want to dump on her, but a few things here. One: She needs to knock off calling Coulter anti-semitic. I’m not in the habit of defending AC but that’s simply a bad rap. Two: What’s with the Kathleen Parker-ish self-congratulations about being a lone voice brave enough to cry out in the wilderness about the party’s message? Frum was on this very network just the other day pitching the same thing. Surely that tendency was a contributing factor in the Times hiring Ross Douthat. There’s plenty of media fame and fortune to be had in being a Republican who criticizes Republicans. (Except for me!) Three: Beyond rehashing her pop’s aversion to earmarks, does she have any concrete policy suggestions on appealing to young voters or is this purely a stylistic matter of pushing back against the right’s provocateurs? Every time I see her on TV she’s talking about how much she loves the GOP without ever explaining why. What’s the attraction? Small government (in theory), social issues, what? Exit quotation: “If Meghan McCain were serious about inspiring an influx of gen X and Y-ers, why not rage against the out-of-touch elected officials in Washington who’ve ran the GOP into the ground and still struggle with a cogent message?”

Oh please. If McCain had won, your ilk would be treating her like you treated the Bush Twins by now.

And that sums it up pretty well. She was on Hannity the other night, she’s not the sharpest tack in the box and talks like a Valley Girl.
And if she’s so gung-ho on the GOP, what the hell is she doing over at the Daily Beast? I’d pay big bucks to see her take on Ann Coulter. Who doesn’t love a good cat fight?

She’s an airheaded twit obsessed with fashion and pop culture. Her brothers need to tell her that she’s embarrassing them. She certainly embarrasses me as a woman and a member of the GOP.

She will sleep with you but you can’t love or hate her dad, just like him.
The whole “boyfriend dad relationship” concept to sleep with a chubby girl seems weird.
Mr. Joe on March 12, 2009 at 5:38 PM
She could help the GOP’s appeal to younger voters if she’d appear on these TV shows wearing nothing but a black bustier.

Anti-Semitic? Isn’t that what Jew-haters call conservatives? I’m pretty sure Ann isn’t advocating the destruction of Israel, or abandoning them to the Arab world.
Who cares what another McCain thinks? She’s clearly following in dad’s footsteps, trying to get left wingers to like her, and not really thinking about right and wrong in her rush to find the middle of the road. Some day she’ll REACH the middle of the road, and the her “friends” on the left will run right over her.

I’m at a loss why her opinion matters in the first place. Sure she’s the offspring of a (I’ll be polite here) moderate “Republican.” But what are her creds? Why should we care about what she says?
The fact of the matter is that Meghan McCain’s opinion has no more merit than asking Sasha Obama about our foreign trade deficit.

joe_doufu on March 12, 2009 at 5:46 PM
I actually take this Meghan McCain situtation seriously. Because she is such a bumbling fool who can’t articulate positions she is ripe to do a couple things. She can alienate young voters by the fact she tries to agree with Democrat postions on Gay marriage, etc. All this does is set up in a young person’s mind that they are already in the right party. Meghan is not making any argument of “attraction” for young people. She is giving reasons they should stay liberal until her great Crusade finishes and the party is socially liberal. This extremely ill-thought out plan will have the opposite effect most of us want as young minds WOULD be opening up as the liberal fault lines in policy start to appear under Obama. I think we should shame this stupid girl off the stage. She is not just a poor representation of Conservatives, she is an attacker of Conservatives meanwhile a lefty like Maddow can interview her and while seeming “tolerant” can let Meghan do the attacking. I have already registered at the Daily Beast and point out what a misguided figure she is there. Hopefully if more do the same we can get this girl off the media spotlight before she makes a tough job tougher.

I believe we should give her a break. She is very young. I was a flaming liberal at her age for no other reason than the fact that I was indoctrinated into it. I saw no need to look around, research or understand an opposing point of view and certainly not a “backward, redneck conservative one.” I woke up, hopefully Meghan will too.
She needs to get a coherent message if she is going to put herself out there like this though. What Allah said.
JAM on March 12, 2009 at 5:52 PM
Notice neither Meghan nor Daddy feel compelled to tell those of in the Base how they regret not holding our Conservatives views–they just want us to change and be more “inclusive” and “moderate” like them.
Reason Numero Uno Miss McCain doesn’t have a line of handsome naval officers picking her up for dates at the White House!

ddrintn on March 12, 2009 at 5:53 PM
They showed a TV clip it might not be the ones here where McCain is introducing her and saying “does anyone have a job for an Art History major?” Actually kind of cruel for McCain to point out she is useless. The important fact is she had a chance to go to Columbia and chose Art History. She is not a serious person. She got a rich girl degree who is going to live off a trust fund and just wanted the Ivy Sheepskin for cocktail parties. Now she has decided she has an opportunity to be a pundit since no one needs an Art History major. Get her off the stage.

All the earmarks in history are about a tenth of a single percent of the economic black hole that Obama is sending us into.

The fact McCain’s handlers didn’t give her a bigger role tells you all you need to know. If she could rub more than 2 ideas together children of candidates who can are outfront in campaigns. She has complained during the campiagn that she didn’t have a bigger role (we know why). Now that the handlers are gone she is off the leash and not for the better.

ladyingray on March 12, 2009 at 5:58 PM
That’s not even true. Granted, the Bush family is part of America’s patrician class but it was supposed to be Jeb who got to the White House after GHWB.
That being said, give the Bush family for raising balanced children who are not complete trainwrecks. That can’t be said often of offspring raised just outside the public eye.

portlandon on March 12, 2009 at 5:59 PM
She better hope that Coulter doesn’t view her as someone worthy of responding to directly. Coulter uses sarcasm like straight razor; if she decides to engage Ms. McCain, Meghan will definitely have something to be angry about.
Personally, I hope Coulter gives her both rhetorical barrels and the gun-butt; I’m sick of moderates attacking conservatives like a democrat would, and then snivelling it’s all about building a better party. All it’s about, is the moderates getting happy ending treatment from media for bashing their own party. So why are the conservatives holding back? I guess nobody likes us anyway. Levin let Frum have it; so here’s to hoping that Ann goes after this barbie doll.
austinnelly on March 12, 2009 at 5:59 PM
Why is anyone paying attention to what she’s saying? She needs to shut up… Becoming “more moderate” is the LAST thing we need. It’s the reason we are where we are today.
Also, I’ve always said someone needs to get Coulter sammich, but maybe we could lipo Meghan until she’s hot, and pump all that excess in to Coulter, making her appear more healthy at the same time.
Seriously though, Meghan… you can have your stupid views that are simply shaped by an increasingly secular and “no judgments” world, but support for things like abortion and being gay are illogical on their face, and the least of our concerns while we race towards socialism. I pray that no one is dumb enough to be influenced by her, but we don’t need her out there trying to speak for the GOP and “moderate” us, just because her dad ran for POTUS.

I kind of feel like Ronald Reagan. I bought that microphone.
She is only on tv because of the notoriety she gained during her dad’s presidential campaign. Many of us helped pay for that campaign. It’s pretty irritating for her to turn around and shoot her mouth off to a very eager liberal media at the expense of our party.
So, yeah, I’ll criticize her.

More importantly, you need to live life for a while before your opinion matters. Colleges crank out really smart people every year (and I am not even sure that Meghan McCain if Megan McCain falls in this category). It is only when intellegence is tempered with real-life experience that one’s opinion should matter. Meghan McCain, bless her heart, simply hasn’t lived life long enough to be making the statements she is making.
Still don’t know what her dad’s excuse is for much of the crap he utters.

Ann Coulter is like this butterfly that’s the biggest butterfly you’ve ever, seen and a bit scary.
And not that it’s fair or that you can compare this unevolved girl to her, but if you could she’d be a noseeem.
Not so long ago, when Ann’s father passed away she wrote a moving piece about him and her family. Ann is fearless, and so is Rush.
I’m with VDH’s understanding of Rush (and I would add Colter) in that it’s better to forgo the acquisition of power than become a conservative who Frum, et al would approve of.
An interview w/McCain’s first wife would be very interesting, I think. Not to rehash a past of wounds, but to see what kind of woman she is.

They simply take after Nancy. They really weren’t that bad compared to other children out there. The family never became estranged. The “bad ones” never disowned the Gipper (just some of his public policies) They showed up at his funeral.
I know others who are much more deserving of the “worst children on the planet” title. For example, the twenty-something kid of a couple I know who was running a drug ring out of the family home. They let him move back in after his divorce and he repaid them by bringing the cops down on the residence. That seems to be far more heinous than Ronny Jr. bashing Reagan’s stance on abortion.
