Video: Meghan McCain in heroic one-woman crusade to turn GOP centrist or something

She means well (I think) so I don’t want to dump on her, but a few things here. One: She needs to knock off calling Coulter anti-semitic. I’m not in the habit of defending AC but that’s simply a bad rap. Two: What’s with the Kathleen Parker-ish self-congratulations about being a lone voice brave enough to cry out in the wilderness about the party’s message? Frum was on this very network just the other day pitching the same thing. Surely that tendency was a contributing factor in the Times hiring Ross Douthat. There’s plenty of media fame and fortune to be had in being a Republican who criticizes Republicans. (Except for me!) Three: Beyond rehashing her pop’s aversion to earmarks, does she have any concrete policy suggestions on appealing to young voters or is this purely a stylistic matter of pushing back against the right’s provocateurs? Every time I see her on TV she’s talking about how much she loves the GOP without ever explaining why. What’s the attraction? Small government (in theory), social issues, what? Exit quotation: “If Meghan McCain were serious about inspiring an influx of gen X and Y-ers, why not rage against the out-of-touch elected officials in Washington who’ve ran the GOP into the ground and still struggle with a cogent message?”

Meh. Just as bland as her father.

Meghan,
Go away. Now.
doug1981 on March 12, 2009 at 5:18 PM
See its not John McCain’s fault that he lost it is conservatives fault !
Sigh the Moderates so want to blame the conservatives for McCain it is becoming laughible.
It is moderates that cost us the election Conservatives stayed true.
William Amos on March 12, 2009 at 5:18 PM
If her father were not John McCain, no one would know who she is. Hopefully by 2012 no one will remember her.
Didn’t she vote for Kerry in 2004?
bw222 on March 12, 2009 at 5:18 PM
So help me, I’ve got little Donny Osmond in my head now…thanks a lot!

If she’s so concerned for the party, why is she on MSNBC instead of FOX?
Iblis on March 12, 2009 at 5:19 PM
14:59 – it’s almost over.
sherry on March 12, 2009 at 5:19 PM
She is a traitor to the party just like her old man. She is basically a Democrat who can’t say she is because of her dad. A waste of time and a nobody. She has never articulated conservative principals in any meaningful way and she expects people to follow her crusade against “extremism” among our ranks. What a joke.
echosyst on March 12, 2009 at 5:19 PM
Because that would include her dad.
FloatingRock on March 12, 2009 at 5:20 PM
If it didn’t mean a slaughter at the polls and an automatic second term for Obama, I’d like to see a “centrist” ticket in 2012. Maybe something on the order of Romney/Pawlenty or Romney/Crist. That way, when the GOP gets pummeled, they won’t have any “extremists” and “socon albatrosses” to blame.
ddrintn on March 12, 2009 at 5:20 PM
Her columns are pedestrian and the only reason she is being interviewed by anyone is because she is trashing the party. She is the silly daughter of a disastrous candidate whose opinion frankly does not matter. She is so happy to challenge Ann Coulter on MSNBC and in her columns and thankfully for her Ann won’t take the bait. Because a debate between the two would reveal Meghan for what she is, spoiled and uneducated.

Shameless PR grab…post election traffic must have dropped off. Grow up a few years and we can talk…

getalife on March 12, 2009 at 5:21 PM
I wouldn’t dump on her, but she is forcing her idiotic ideas into the public arena. She deserves all the abuse that morons who spout their foolish opinions publicly have coming to them.

lol. In a nutshell.
a capella on March 12, 2009 at 5:23 PM
According to the Rasmussen Daily Tracking Poll, the ONLY time McCain was ahead of Obama was from the time Sarah Palin was announced as his running mate until the financial meltdown.
Then, according to Meghan, Sarah forced her dad to suspend his campaign, return to Washington and try to save the world.
bw222 on March 12, 2009 at 5:23 PM
Good question. It takes real courage to, say, defend Sarah Palin.
ddrintn on March 12, 2009 at 5:23 PM
That is the one thing the Moderates dont get. If we act MORE like Obama why would voters chose us when they have the real thing ?
We could make our veiws more palitible for those further left. But they arent going to abandon Obama for a pale copy of him. Its ultimately self defeating.
We cant out bid Obama for pro choice voters or Economic programs. Any attempt to move left will be counter by the left and we will look foolish.
Americans like a clear choice not a dull echo.
William Amos on March 12, 2009 at 5:23 PM
Here is my Open Letter to Meghan McCain about Economics.
Dadvocate on March 12, 2009 at 5:24 PM
It’s amazing how quickly the high-ups in our society turn to name-calling. It’s like you can’t criticize a group without it being assumed that you hate that group. Criticize the fact that >90% of the black vote goes to Democrats, for example, and you are instantly called a racist. Apparently if you suggest that their is something better than judaism, you are an anti-semite.
Really deadens the words too. There are plenty of real racists and anti-semites out there.
kc8ukw on March 12, 2009 at 5:24 PM
AP you have a point. I have not heard anything from her other than that young people need to vote for the GOP and she is the person to make it happen. While I was getting ready this morning she was on Fox talking about how Coulter was just a bomb thrower who didn’t do the party any favors. She sounded confused and unfocused in her message. She wants to increase her stature, but she is unsure on how that will happen.
txaggie on March 12, 2009 at 5:24 PM
That’s because she’s not very deep.

grapeknutz on March 12, 2009 at 5:24 PM
You getting married to Megan Allah ?
William Amos on March 12, 2009 at 5:24 PM
Because this is what the debate is all about. Who ran the GOP in the ground? Please have your point of view but can you admit that there’s no universal consensus on this? I love these rhetorical questions:
- Sure, say whatever you want. But why don’t you just admit that you’re an idiot?
A small admission, indeed.
radiofreevillage on March 12, 2009 at 5:24 PM
Bless your little pea-pickin’ heart. Meghan, darlin’, go on like a good girl and find yourself a boyfriend. The adults have serious issues to discuss. ‘Bye now.

bw222 on March 12, 2009 at 5:25 PM
She’s so brave.
myrenovations on March 12, 2009 at 5:25 PM
She’s an embarrassment. She has no clue what republicanism means, her first vote went to long face John Kerry, and she calls herself a “progressive republican.” In other words, she is a socialist. A has-been. Nothing else to see.
jencab on March 12, 2009 at 5:25 PM
Yes, and she’s only been a Republican since June of last year “as a symbol of my commitment to my dad and to represent the faith I have in his ability to be an effective leader for our country and to grow and strengthen the Republican party when he is elected President of the United States.”
So it’s not as if she even became a Republican out of agreement with their policies or out of repudiation of Democratic policies.
There’s not a whole lot of credibility with her. It seems now that she’s an official Republican she wants to help change the party to Democratic-lite.
INC on March 12, 2009 at 5:26 PM
Would someone please put a muzzle on this dog.
HornetSting on March 12, 2009 at 5:26 PM
She’s being used to paint all Republicans who aren’t RINO’s as “haters” and “evil”.
She really has no idea what she’s doing and how she’s being used.
Personally, I find her attitude and ignorance quite aggravating.

Because that could be interpreted as helping Sarah, which McCain (John, Cindy, or Meghan) would be reluctant to do under any circumstance…
Nat Hound on March 12, 2009 at 5:26 PM
I for one will know there is a God in Heaven if Allah marries Megan.
No comment if Allah will learn there is a hell after the marraage.
William Amos on March 12, 2009 at 5:27 PM
I don’t know about that, but returning to Washington was the right move, without any question. McCain even did okay by voicing the concerns of House Republicans and helping them to slow down the original cr#ppy bill to get at least some controls put in for the next cr#ppy incarnation. McCain blew it by going to the debate and letting the dems and the press mock him about it, but I’d like Senators to do their job, which means being in the Senate when the biggest piece of legislation in history (and very unconstitutional, at that) is coming through.
progressoverpeace on March 12, 2009 at 5:27 PM
She’s a tool who’s trying to get her 15 minutes of fame (by way of her pathetic Dad) extended. She has nothing to say and is repugnant to every true conservative and most Republicans
flytier on March 12, 2009 at 5:27 PM
Answer: she doesn’t love the GOP; it’s a con game. Frumation (if you will) leads to TV interviews. That’s all this is about.
Erich66 on March 12, 2009 at 5:27 PM
I am all for bringing more young people into the party, but sell them on the party! You are wasting your time bad mouthing those in the party you disagree with. Tell people what is right with the party. If you are such a big tent Republican, then you should be defending Ann’s right to a diverse opinion. Diversity of thought is allowed in the republican party; it is the dems that prefer group think.

Theworldisnotenough on March 12, 2009 at 5:28 PM
I hope I won’t live to regret saying this but I am pretty proud that Ann hasn’t felt the urge to take this youngster on. But she is smarter than I thought because she figured out the magic equation for being invited on TV.

William Amos on March 12, 2009 at 5:29 PM
Meghan is an heiress, went to Columbia, interned at Newsweek and Saturday Night Live, and voted for Kerry in 2004.
So, she’s not what you’d call a conviction Republican. She
s more of a “use my Mom’s money to run for my Dad’s senate seat when he retires” sort of Republican.
Terry_Dyne on March 12, 2009 at 5:29 PM

I guess the irony is lost on her and Maddow is her old man is the very kind of moderate Republican she is promoting and he ended up getting his ass kicked. She knows picking a fight with Coulter will ingratiate her with the left, a pathetic attempt to extend her 15 minutes. I hope Ann doesn’t take the bait.

PS – somebody really needs to tell Meghan that we were just being polite because we knew what the alternative was.
TheBigOldDog on March 12, 2009 at 5:33 PM
I wish she was more articulate, when she backed down on the economy question that was kind of sad. She sounds too valley girl, I mean it wouldn’t have killed her to research some info about the current economic situation and offer her own thoughts, she doesn’t have to agree with any one side.
zembla on March 12, 2009 at 5:33 PM
I just find it hilarious that someone who voted for John Kerry and wasn’t even a member of the GOP until last year is now on the TV talking about how to fix the party. This is exceptionally ballsy considering her father is a traitor to the Revolution he claims to have been such a great foot soldier for. It’s like Benedict Arnold’s daughter giving Washington advice.
cbconnolly on March 12, 2009 at 5:34 PM
She was on Hannity’s panel the other night. I watched a minute of it and turned it off. She sounds like she hangs out with Caroline Kennedy. “Like, um, I don’t know, but it really freaks me out.” That bad.

Right there’s your problem, AP. Flawed thesis statement.
Meghan has no idea what she’s talking about. She hasn’t even figured out what she believes in, or if she has, she certainly hasn’t made it very clear.
Another progeny who parachutes into the limelight and the media (and bloggers) hang on her every word.
Irrelevant and immature daughter of an American hero who likes to make believe he has conservative values so that American-hero-loving conservatives will vote for him.
