Stupid is as stupid does

posted at 8:15 am on March 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

What does a night of insomnia offer?  A chance to watch the worst on television in the vain hope that it puts you to sleep.  Unfortunately, even HBO has its commercials (for itself), and one kept repeating all night long.  Apparently, Will Farrell has a one-man stage show that HBO will air live on Saturday, which gasses on and on about how stupid George Bush is:

Ferrell, who poked fun at the president with his successful impersonations on “SNL,” told CNN he likes that Bush “never thinks he’s wrong.”

“He’s arrogant with a school-boy attitude, and combine that with the fact that he is commander in chief — and, unfortunately, it’s very funny.”

Wow, how original!  Another entertainment-industry portrayal of George Bush as stupid.  Perfect timing, too, as someone has to come up with a DVD that Barack Obama can offer Gordon Brown on his next visit to the US.

Will Farrell, Will Farrell … say, isn’t he the guy who did Stepbrothers, Superstar, Bewitched, Blades of Glory, Anchorman, and Elf?

A guy with a career like that is making fun of someone else’s intellect?

Fail.

Update: Kim Priestap says that the show has Bush exposing his penis at one point.  Well, that’s about the intellectual level of Farrell’s entire ouevre.  Only the arrested adolescents in HBO’s audience will find that entertaining — in other words, the same people that watch Bill Maher.

This never-ending revival of blame Bush will continue until the 2010 elections.
The Democrats are failing. Obama is not Presidential material.
The Democrats are worried about 2010.
They must keep bringing up Bush and they will run against Bush in 2010.
As in “Don’t blame us Democrats that the economy hasn’t turned around and employment is sky rocketing – Bush made it worse than we realized.”
or
“Don’t blame us the Iran launched a nuke missile – Bush really upset them and they wouldn’t talke to Obama and Bush did not solve the nuke problem on his watch.”

Just pick the topic and blame Bush – that will be the Democrats main theme; plus a boogie-man of things would be even worse under those conservative “Bush” Republicans.

True. I don’t think anyone insinuated he wasn’t successful. But Pauly Shore is living prove you don’t have to be funny to be a successful comedian. BTW, that was the DVD set that everyone was so upset about that the president gave to Mr. Brown. I heard Brown “loved” Biodome.

Hey, remember when this guy used to be funny? Yeah, it’s kind of been a while. His movies have gotten pretty pathetic. The Bush stuff has been done to death. Move on.

CP on March 12, 2009 at 9:30 AM

Although he essentially plays the same character in every movie he’s in, I still find Ferrell movies reasonably funny. Doing a “Lets-Make-Fun-of-Bush” tour at this point in history goes beyond beating a dead horse. Its disturbingly pathetic. Talk about being creatively bankrupt.

thecountofincognito on March 12, 2009 at 9:31 AM

I read about this guy yesterday on Newsbusters.
The money-part of his quote was that once again, gosh-darn, the messiah is just too serious and important to make fun of.

unclesmrgol on March 12, 2009 at 9:35 AM

Can you imagine the months of material that would have been generated had the Gordon Brown flub been on GWB’s watch. However, since this move was under Obama’s, it has flown completely under the wire of our main-stream press.

facts you cannot deny

1. This Financial crisis started under Bush’s watch

nice343 on March 12, 2009 at 8:20 AM

No one argues that. But it’s fact that the crisis was a direct result of Democrat policies.

Likewise, no one argues that the increase in Islamic terrorism started under Clinton’s watch.

By your own “logic”, then. 9/11 was Clinton’s fault.

You’re dismissed.

Del Dolemonte on March 12, 2009 at 9:37 AM

Well, they are still making movies about Richard Nixon that get nominated for Academy Awards. So we had better get used to a longterm epoch of Bush-bashing.

Sadly I think you are right. I would bet 30 years from now we are going to be watching Bush/and some idiot in an interview where Bush tells the world how much of a hypocrite he is. Than all of Hollywood will fawn over the director telling them that it was in the movie so it must be true.

whitetop on March 12, 2009 at 10:14 AM

Don’t worry, Captain. We are getting revenge. Even with a stellar transition courtesy of the outgoing President, Obama can’t get it right. He makes Bush look like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, James Madison and Teddy Roosevelt all rolled into one.

I direct my liberal friends to the transition afforded President Bush by his predecessor. Trashed equipment, contested election, minimal briefings, chaos. Despite all of that, Bush looked and acted competent. And no, don’t try to hang 9/11 on Bush entirely. And don’t bring up the financial crisis…

eaglesdontflock on March 12, 2009 at 10:18 AM

So George Bush isn’t stupid? That should be the headline.

capitulus on March 12, 2009 at 10:19 AM

Paying attention to the constant anti-Bush diatribe from celebrities is like being middle class during the French revolution – it is not in your best interest. As the country slips into economic depression, the humor in this nonsense is sorta pointless and meaningless.

Fuquay Steve on March 12, 2009 at 10:53 AM

I have never seen Ferrell do anything that didn’t irritate me, let alone make me laugh.

Count to 10 on March 12, 2009 at 10:57 AM

I have to admit, I like Will Farrell. Some of his movies, like Anchorman, have been pretty funny. But what continues to bother about entertainers like Farrell is that they all think Bush is stupid. Lets not forget Bush went to Yale and Harvard. Maybe not top of his class but those schools are not exactly community college. I noticed that according to Wikipedia (I know, consider the source) that Farrell went to someplace call University of John O’Donnel and has a degree in “Sports Informtaion”, whatever the heck that is. Don’t even know if this school even exists.

Anyway, my point is that people like Farrell, not known for his intellectual horsepower, should stick to entertaining. Bush made his share of mistakes but to call him stupid is just, well, stupid.

The propaganda continues “hello everyone and welcome to Obazi America” This is a true page out of the Hitler book, teach the children while they are young and continue to constantly feed them propaganda. Once you have 2 generations fixed on a certain way of life, you have 60% of the country begging to live like this. Then they will March them straight into anything with no questions asked.

Tremmy on March 12, 2009 at 11:28 AM

Who cares what Farrell says? I happen to think the dude is pretty funny.

But he’s an actor/comedian. Societies in the past held such “fools” in the proper regard. Why on earth do we lend so much credence or attention to the opinions of fools.

Shut up and play yer’ guitar.

connertown on March 12, 2009 at 11:35 AM

Sometimes I wonder if liberals still crack each other up imitating Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon.

It doesn’t seem to matter that George W. Bush has moved back to Texas. No, I don’t think that the need to draw attention from Obama’s colossal history-making incompetence and cluelessness really accounts for it; I think the lefties would still be slamming Bush even if Obama were impressive. I mean, how many among us still felt the need to keep trashing Bill Clinton in 2001 after he’d finally faded from the limelight?

I happen to respect people who stick to their principles and do what they think is right. And I don’t think I’m ever wrong. Will Farrell was at his best playing Trebek on SNL. One guy I do like is Darrell Hammond, who has stuck with that show (realizing, thankfully, that he is NOT a movie actor). Laura Ingraham interviewed him a few times, and he seemed pretty level-headed.

John F Not Kerry on March 12, 2009 at 12:50 PM

Kim Priestap says that the show has Bush exposing his penis at one point.

Oooo. How edgy. Hey Will, you want to be controversial and on the edge? Write and perform a one-man show that portrays President Bush in a thoughtful and respectful manner as he discusses his thoughts and beliefs about spreading democracy as a counter to Islamo-terrorism. Now that would be “brave.”

Mallard T. Drake on March 12, 2009 at 1:29 PM

I am shocked that Hollywood would make fun of a Republican. Shocked!

But with a straight face, I ask: How safe it is in the herd. Why don’t they debate someone? Or do something more than kibbitz and look for publicity? It is so easy to never be wrong when you have no record and maybe, no clear positions. Just some claims like President Bush is a fool or other crap from beacons of wisdom like Sean Penn. Weird behavior for saving the moron’s failing career. As an agent once told me, even dead actors want publicity. Look at how the walking dead Madonna and Stones had to get anitwar recently. Gross.

The One has been in office about 50 days and, adding the campaign, there is material for a three hour comedy. Ummm..make that a tragicomedy. Sure to be popular in all 57 states.
