St. Paul police tell Soliah to stay in California

Sara Jane Olsen wants to return to Minnesota to restart her community-theater career, but the police union in St. Paul would rather Kathleen Soliah do her parole for murder in California instead.  Soliah, the former SLA terrorist and convicted murderer, will get released next week after serving seven years for planting bombs and a robbery where Myrna Opsahl, a bank teller, was killed.  Unfortunately, the SPPD union won’t have much impact on the decision:

The president of St. Paul’s police union followed his Los Angeles counterpart Wednesday, asking California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to force Sara Jane Olson to serve her parole in his state instead of back home in St. Paul.

Despite the police unions’ concerns, Gov. Tim Pawlenty said Minnesota lacks the authority to refuse to accept Olson’s parole supervision under an interstate agreement governing such cases.

“She should serve her debt where she committed her crimes and not where she was allowed and enabled to remain a fugitive for decades,” St. Paul Police Federation President Dave Titus said Wednesday. “Until she’s done her parole and is off paper, she shouldn’t be able to live wherever she wants to.”

Minnesota agreed to the arrangement a year ago, when California initially released her, and then had to recapture her when they realized they’d made a mistake:

Minnesota corrections officials have already approved Olson’s request to serve her parole in St. Paul. California officials have not yet made a final decision, but a year ago both states agreed Olson could serve parole in St. Paul. Five days after her release last March, Olson was rearrested at the airport preparing to fly home. California officials cited a clerical error for letting her out a year early and sent her back to prison.

In another example of California education, the parole board miscalculated her time off with good behavior and let her out too early.  Now, we believe, they have the math correct.  Maybe they can contact the Mathemagician at the U of M to check their calculations.

Soliah should have spent the rest of her life in prison for her crimes, especially the murder of Myrna Opsahl.  Soliah got to live her life under a new identity here in the Twin Cities, with a family and a career on the local stage.  Opsahl’s family got an anniversary to mourn every year and wonder when her murderers would be brought to justice.  Now they get to watch the convicted murderer and terrorist pick up her life while the victim gets forgotten once again.

Still, I wouldn’t expect Soliah to get a big welcome back when she does arrive.  She told everyone at first that she didn’t do anything wrong, and then that she tossed a couple of bombs but never hurt anyone.  When she pled guilty to murder, it opened a lot of eyes here among the people who had been contributing to her defense and demanding her release.  I suspect that her career on the stage will go poorly in the future.

Yet you guys voted for that goof-ball liberal actor…you can bet it wouldn’t bother him to have her live in Minnesota…just in another town.

It’s stage. It’s mini-Hollywood. She’ll be welcomed back by enough useful idiots with open arms to make her feel all warm and fuzzy.

And you can have her.

OmahaConservative on March 12, 2009 at 10:28 AM

Myrna Opsahl was just an unenlightened tool of the system. Her life had no value when compared to the important revolutionary cause of highly aware suburban radicals like Soliah.

Aren’t you afraid she’ll be a bad influence on your radical Muslim population?

Looks like the SPPD boys will become avid community theater goers in the coming years. Don’t forget the tomatoes, guys!

Yeah Frankenberry doesn’t want to share the spotlight. When you have 2 liberals of such stature you want to spread the wealth around.

Minnesota gets hammered again; -2 today and Soliah is coming back to sell more of her stupid cookbooks. I need to move.

Ed, as a south Minneapolis resident I think you’re being a little too generous with the thought patterns of most of my fellow citizens. I expect a Star Trib editorial on the subject stating that she paid her debt to society (with a short blurb on how we should feel sorry for her for having been released and then detained again) and she should be welcomed back with open arms. She will be on the stage at local theaters within the year.

strictnein on March 12, 2009 at 10:32 AM

I agree she should spend the rest of her life in jail. Its not like she didnt have a full life while on the lam.

People think Massachusetts has liberals? Minnesota would give them a run for their money.

Come now, we all know the only terrorists are Rethuglicans and those who catch sea kittens. Planting bombs in furtherance of the Leftist agenda is merely community activism. It may be a bit overzealous, but compared to cutting the capital gains tax it is no crime.

/sarc (for the sarcasm impaired lefties, who’d probably agree with it)

This IS the problem across the entire Country my very funny (ha ha funny 1 or 2 liner) friend, we have States like MN, MI, NY, NJ, CA, OR that have this huge white guild , far left, radical Liberal mind set… The old fuzz-ball Hippies, drug worn minds of the Elites… They ruin their respective States, bankrupt them, Socialize them, then turn to Conservative States and demand our hard earned money for their folly…

These morons elect the Murthas, the Kennedys, the Kerrys, the Obamas of the world… and wonder why their States suck so bad, have such high taxes, run off business, hig unemplyoment, high crime and massive welfare… IDIOTS!

It’s these very same tools that vote in the Liar-In-Chief, the Messiah to pay for their mortages, gas and foibles…

The Symbionese Liberation Army (S.L.A.) was an American self-styled urban guerrilla warfare group active between 1973 and 1975 that considered itself a revolutionary vanguard army. –Wikipedia

So how will the Northern US Muslim community deal with Soliah? She’d likely convert to join forces with radical Islamics to pursue the bloody thrill of urban guerrilla terrorism. As a Muslim, she’d enjoy the element of PC untouchability from the PC population and PC government.

[I write "Islamics" knowing that Islam references the REGION on earth wherein Muslims live and rule according to their religion.]

Not to be a jerk, but this was a poor ending to the article Ed. No one should give a flying fark how her **career** goes, we should be wishing her a miserable life and hope for her early release from “life”.

Geministorm on March 12, 2009 at 10:54 AM

Ed,

I’m not sure her return to theatre here won’t go well. People here are radical, take my Congressman for example, Keith Ellison, she’s not even in his District and I’ll bet he’ll welcome her back with open arms.

He’s that crazy, I keep wondering when we’re going to see him do some work for our District. I only see him on TV in Gaza or Syria.

You’re on to something. No requirements given “honorary” degree–and professorship follows “guest lecturer” status and series. Advisory and Board positions ensue towards path into political office. Meet the next executor.

Really – I want to know – Are there enough SANE Minnesotans left to ever take the state back from the left-wing asylum dwellers?

Too bad. There was some pretty good fishing up there and when the US collapses and finally disintegrates under Obama’s “leadership”, MN won’t be part of the country I’ll choose to be living in.

Too bad this killer didn’t commit her crime in Texas. Huntsville has a lot better (and more permanent) way of “reforming” murderers. No long probation needed.
***
Maybe Bill Ayers and his lovely wife Bernadine Dohrn could take her in and get her work in Chicago. The University could use her experience there.

“Killing capitalist pigs for Peace” is what made sense to Soliah in the 1970s, and I don’t see much evidence that she’s changed her mind. Like Ayers and Dohrn, she’s just retired from the hands-on work.

RBMN on March 12, 2009 at 1:20 PM

C’mon! This is Minnesota! Wellstone country! She will be a media darling! Interviewed by the Red Star and Tribune till the cows come home! Then she will be on local NPR and PBS doing “how do you feel about your time in prison” in depth interviews with communist journalists! Then she will the toast of the prick celebrity big shots around town. She will be offered big bucks for her book! Then she will job offers from every corner of the Twin Cities! We love this stuff up here!

She is a pig that should rot in prison, by the way!

If that picture is a true likeness, the gift of life has not helped her. She is one ugly human being. Maybe going through what remains of her life looking like that is the rest of her punishment.

I know of no one who ever took a flattering mug shot. Well, perhaps Tom Delay, but that’s because he smiled for it.

Ed Morrissey on March 12, 2009 at 2:04 PM

Right now, Hollywood is probably writing the screen play of her life story with the intent of showing what a wonderful mother she is and how she was unjustly treated, and how courageous she was to kill people. Right is wrong and wrong is right to liberals.
But…

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

She will be welcomed back and given celebrity status. She will be quoted on public issues and given opportunities to speak at public events. That is part of the liberal culture. You are in if you oppose traditional value and culture. She will have many soul mates speaking for her in only the way liberals can do it. Around here it is called misleading and distorting and that is okay in Minnesota just ask a local T.V. station it never hurt their credibility it was a badge of honor.

You have no idea how complex and confusing is California sentencing. Most errors detected on appeal are in sentencing. Soliah’s sentence was even more confusing in that defendants have to be sentenced under the laws at the time of their crime. Additionally, in her case, there was a contested issue on how to calculate her sentence and good time credits.

The various police unions here in California are right on the same wavelength as the St. Paul union:

“We do not believe that the state of Minnesota has a sufficient interest in ensuring that Ms. Soliah does not violate her conditions of parole,” union President Paul M. Weber said.

“The responsibility to ensure that Ms. Soliah follows each and every requirement of parole is one which should be undertaken by the state of California, not ‘outsourced’ to another state. Ms. Soliah should be allowed to travel to another state when she fulfills her obligations to California, and not a minute before.”

It is nice to know, however, that if for any reason Ms. Soliah’s parole does get “outsourced” to Minnesota, that there are police in Minnesota who will assure that Soliah serves every minute of that parole and meets its every requirement.

That said, Soliah/Opsahl has apologized — something I don’t think Patty Hearst, who was also one of the robbers, did, and Hearst is scot free and able to enter her pedigreed dogs at Westminster. As a Catholic, I put a lot of store by a sincere apology and a penance done, and I also put a lot of store by the lack of one and the lack of penance.
