“I mention this for one reason: Tony Ward is the President’s nominee to head the Justice Department’s Civil Division. If you want to know how far we are past 9/11, there’s your answer: John Walker Lindh’s defense attorney is going to work for Justice.”

MrScribbler on March 12, 2009 at 10:41 PM

Interesting observation. You know, in the real world, there are some insecure people who rise to levels of authority. Those people insecure in their own worth and abilities very often staff with people who are of lower capabilities than themselves and vociferously resist staffing with highly competent people for fear of having those more competent make them look bad.

While it is clear that Obama is a narcissistic demagogue, it is also very possible that he is insecure in his own self-worth and capability. That’s not an odd condition for someone for whom it appears that every position he has held, including his present position, has been a result of affirmative action. Someone who has gone through life taking advantage of affirmative action has got to have very serious internal questions about his or her own real capabilities and worth. Obama has got to know, deep in his heart of hearts, is that his skin color is the only reason he is now POTUS. Given that, and given that he wants to continue to wow (scam, whatever) his followers, he is going to surround himself with people that will make him look like *he* is the best and smartest among them.

This strategy doesn’t work well for people in the real world who work this way — it’s not going to work any better for The One. The only question is how long he’ll be able to keep up the scam. 4 years? 8 years? long enough?

AZfederalist on March 12, 2009 at 10:53 PM

dmann on March 12, 2009 at 11:19 PM

No, but his wife is. I found a blog called Legal Pad: a Cal Law blog. Look at some of the items here!

Civil division lawyers have been defending the government in the warrant-less wiretapping litigation before Chief Judge Vaughn Walker here in San Francisco. This is probably one of the most politically sensitive civil cases in the department. But West’s MoFo partner James Brosnahan represented one of the plaintiffs against the telecom companies. Though this is not the part of the case that’s still active, it was consolidated with the still-kicking Al Haramain complaint. Will West have to recuse himself?

…In addition to Al Haramain, West will have other ideologically charged litigation on his plate, not least over access to the Bush Administration’s secret legal memos in the war on terror (including one examined by Cal Law this week). Given the West family’s political leanings (his wife headed up the ACLU here), it will be fascinating to watch how much of that translates into changing litigation postures in these cases.
