Priorities: Team Obama held meeting on how to ingratiate him with D.C. social scene
posted at 3:40 pm on March 12, 2009 by Allahpundit
Congrats, Washington Times. You’ve found the mother of all “What if Bush did it?” items.
Earlier this year, the Obama administration invited top editors of Washington’s three local luxury lifestyle magazines, Capitol File, DC Magazine and Washington Life to a meeting where, among other things, they discussed how the President and first lady can embrace Washington’s glittery social scene.
The White House is “identifying tastemakers in order to help create grassroots interest in some of the programs they are working on,” said Washington Life’s Michael Clements, who attended the meeting. “They wanted to introduce themselves. It was certainly a departure from previous administrations.”…
A White House aide who spoke on condition of anonymity dismissed the notion that a publicly populist Obama White House is privately courting socialites, contending that the meeting was held to explore how the Obamas can “engage in the community.” The aide also pointed out that similar meetings were held with representatives of sports, entertainment and philanthropic organizations in Washington…
Chuck Conconi, a former social columnist, says the Obamas are taking a leaf from the Reagan playbook by blending social Washington, political figures, and Hollywood.
Nothing wrong with this, really. Charming the local (and not so local) power structure is good, smart politics, as is having dozens of interest groups aligned on your side coordinating their message with a daily phone call. And just as conservative groups could never get away with that without dark media insinuations about the “right-wing noise machine” building a wall of propaganda around the White House, George W. Bush could never have gotten away with holding a strategy session on how to gladhand the D.C. glitterati while issuing near-hourly warnings about how we’re on the brink of Great Depression II. I can just picture the mocking nutroots YouTube clips, destined to be recycled on “Hardball” and “Countdown”: First a quote from a story about Bush’s interest in socializing, then a clip of him and Laura dressed in finery and dancing at an inaugural ball as graphics about the market’s implosion and this year’s $1.75 trillion deficit roll merrily by. They’re … out of touch, you see. Exit question: Couldn’t the meeting have been postponed until, oh, say, after Geithner came up with a bank rescue plan and Treasury had been staffed? This isn’t going to reassure George Will or Tom Friedman about Obama’s ability to prioritize.
Update: And lo and behold, as I was writing this very post, another Treasury appointee’s dropped out due to vetting issues.

And ironically he sought the help of Rev. Wright to ingratiate himself into the black inner city community of Chicago. This man has a real issue about not fitting in naturally.

Isn’t this like….
1. Your mom paying the kids in the neighborhood to play with you.

3. Going to a family reunion to find a date.

Actually that would be wrong. Caligula was just a crazy ass emperor who was psychotic. You are thinking of Nero who was completely self-absorbed with his own interest of becoming an actor to notice how the empire began to crumble.

A Democratic president who has to work to ingratiate himself with Washington society has serious problems.
A Republican presidency is treated like a hostile takeover by the locals in DC. That’s why the Reagans NEEDED a charm offensive. The Washington socialtes have practically hired hit men on each other to get to be first in line to host the Obamas.
rockmom on March 12, 2009 at 4:05 PM
Hm, will he be partying with the wealthiest 1% of Americans? As Orwell said, “all men are created equal, some are more equal than others”.
CP on March 12, 2009 at 4:05 PM
JFK and Reagan had better tax policies and administrative priorities. They weren’t perceived as fiddling while Rome burned or rivaling the court of Louis XVI for garnering public outrage.
When the bill is presented to the taxpayer, heads will roll. Obama has added $3.2 trillion to the national debt in his first 20 months and 11 days in office, eclipsing the $2.9 trillion added during the Bush presidency’s entire eight years.
chunderroad on March 12, 2009 at 4:05 PM

the reason Geo. W. Bush didn’t have to do this is because he already had friends. and a large family. bambi’s friends are Wm. Ayers & Rev. WRight.

They’re all limousine liberals, that’s close enough.
rockmom on March 12, 2009 at 4:07 PM
Thanks txaggie, I actually do know the difference. I realize it was in Nero’s reign where Rome really began to crumble and fall, but the beginning of the end I believe was under the reign of Caligula. Besides, with some of the downright bizarre and utterly stupid decisions and moves THE ONE and his administration are making using Caligula as an example is a bit more apropos in describing the insanity we are witnessing!
Liberty or Death on March 12, 2009 at 4:07 PM

Added to this I read he’s the first president in a long time to skip some dinner since he’ll be in Chicago with his daughters for the start of spring breaks. Is this another vacation?
Seriously, between vacations, cocktail parties, ingratiating himself with socialites, cruising around in his spiffy new ride, and playing pretend dictator at pointless summits how on earth does he find time to do his job… Oh right, the last two months and all.

Using the word “grassroots” in any sentence discussing D.C.’s so-called “tastemakers” is roughly akin to using the words “class” and “Obama” in a sentence.
There’s so much sh*t hitting the fan these days that normal Americans can’t even see the fan, so why is the child-president worrying about sucking up to the cocktail-party crowd?
That must be much more important than the economy, national defense, relations with our allies and the millions of Americans out of work, right?

Can’t argue with that comparison. Some of the things Obama has done recently certainly do defy any explanation short of incompetence, insanity, or malfeasance.

I think there’s a cohesive narrative here that could help the GOP. But “conservatives” would rather focus on tearing down Michael Steele?

Dumbfounded. I am just dumbfounded that Barack Obama is so pitiful. I knew he was an inexperienced, socialist inclined, Chicago thug, but I had no idea he was so pathetically inept at EVERYTHING. Can’t fill a cabinet, even with recycled Clinton tools, can’t give a decent gift to an important ally, can’t grasp the fact that everything he says and does is for public consumption, can’t understand that calling out Rush Limbaugh when the economy is tanking, MIGHT look ridiculous, can’t even get himself invited to all the big D.C. bashes without assigning a task force to it! I’m appalled that he’s SO bad at everything!

Sometimes I get the impression that Pelosi and Reid are telling Barry to just do the only thing (they think) he can do well which is to get out and charm the public.
What really floors me is that BO has made a major faux pas with the Brits claiming that he was, “tired from focusing on domestic economic issues.” In a statement a day later he said that he would prefer to do anything but involve himself with economic matters. I guess the question in my mind is this; What the hell does he want to do? It is becoming obvious that he just wants to join the Wednesday night conga line at the WH parties.
This guy is a complete joke. A disgrace.
