Obama tech appointee office raided; Update: Bribery sting
posted at 11:33 am on March 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
If Barack Obama thought the nomination nightmare would end soon, an FBI raid today extended and deepened the REM cycle. Obama announced the appointment of Vivek Kundra as the Chief Information Officer of the Obama White House last week, but today Kundra has search warrants rather than Google searches on his mind:
Federal agents this morning are searching the Judiciary Square office of Washington, D.C.’s Chief Technology Officer.
The search is part of “an ongoing investigation,” said a spokeswoman for the FBI’s D.C. Field Office, Lindsay Gotwin, said. She declined to comment further.
The outgoing Chief Technology Officer, Vivek Kundra, was appointed last week Chief Information Officer by the Obama administration.
Obama has nominated a number of people with tax problems and conflicts of interest that floated to the surface after their appointments were publicly announced. He has lost three Cabinet appointments, two to tax problems, and his Chief Performance Officer, Nancy Killefer, over her tax issues. The raid on the DC CTO’s office will confirm again the impression that Team Obama has a real problem in vetting potential appointments.
So far, nothing is known of the investigation or the potential charges. More will undoubtedly be forthcoming, and none of it will reflect well on the White House. Didn’t they bother to check with their own Department of Justice in vetting Kundra?
Update: The Washington Post reports that the FBI conducted a bribery sting and arrested one of Kundar’s aides:
An official in the D.C. government’s office of the chief technology officer has been arrested in a federal bribery sting, according to law enforcement sources. The FBI has raided the technology office this morning and agents are continuing to search for evidence, sources said.
Yusuf Acar, 40, was taken into custody this morning by FBI agents at his home in Northwest Washington, the sources said. The nature of the charges could not be determined. Channing Phillips, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, declined to comment on the arrest, saying the case “is under seal.”
Federal authorities this morning arrested a second person, Sushil Bansal, 41, of Fairfax County, in the sting operation this morning. According to his company’s website, Bansal used to work in the D.C. government and later founded Advanced Integrated Technologies Corporation, an information technology consulting firm based in the District. That company has several contracts with D.C. government agencies, including the technology office and the Department of Motor Vehicles. Last August, he was awarded the Association of Indians in America’s Entrepenuer of the Year Award.
Wow. Acar had an annual salary of over $127,000, which apparently isn’t enough to keep officials from taking bribes in DC. What would Acar have done for people to offer him bribes in the first place? How far up the ladder would this corruption go? I imagine the Senate will be wondering the same thing, or at least some members of it.
I give Kundar until Friday to withdraw. Bets?

If it is Dunder Mifflin, then it is a toss up as to who is the Michael in the administration. Biden says this morning the current economic conditions are like the depression but much more complicated!!!!!! He didn’t get the “optimistic” memo or he didn’t read it. Is this more rhetorical flourish or is it the crisis testing Obama’s presidency?

Arrests made, searches still ongoing. Obama’s appointment of Vivek Kundra to his chief information officer may be thrown in doubt, but I doubt whether his vetters could have learned of the bribery scheme and the federal investigation prior to now without damaging the investigation in the first place. He probably got blindsided on this one. So far, no evidence of Kundra’s own wrongdoing, but the stench of wrongdoing is evident.

What all this shows, from Blagoyovich to the latest episode, is that at best he has a profound indifference to political corruption and at worst is a Don Corelone-like creature. As a ex-pat Chicagoan I lean more towards the former in that until two years ago Barry was little more then a back bench ward healer.

President Obama (PBUH) didn’t assemble a “team of rivals”. He put together a TEAM OF CROOKS. However, he probably feels that CROOKS will fit in a lot better with Congress than rivals will.
***
As far as Chief Information Officers–when PC computers replaced the much older mainframe computers in my pre retirement military radar and missile system work we wasted much more time in pointless tasks related to the security vulnerabilities of these new systems.
***
Many more expensive system upgrades were needed–and many more high salaried persons to work on them. We were forced to take a lot of good older systems out of service and to replace them with much newer and expensive systems to do the same jobs. And we had a lot more security problems with the new systems also.
***
My home PC with Firefox and Norton anti-virus software seems to work a lot better than the systems at work did. No CIO’s needed either–and no problems after upgrades.

I see this as a good thing. What I worry about are all the Obama appointees who AREN’T indicted when they take office.
Because from that point forward, they’re all practically immune from prosecution. Some of the worst ones who’ve been lucky up to this point will now have carte-blanche. And even the ones who were only a little bit corrupt are going to blossom into full-blown sociopaths now that the guardrails are off.

How about urban machine politics of a drearily familiar sort:

The real proof of the bias are the times where this crap actually WORKED. That being said, I have to admit that this is funny:
Today is the last day of FOSE and things were kicked off with the morning keynote. Louis Freeh, former director of the FBI, was originally scheduled to do the keynote, but it only made sense to add on Vivek Kundra, newly appointed federal government CIO to speak to the mainly federal workers and vendors crowd…
If I were a conspiracy theorist I’d be asking if they put Kundra on that stage to keep him occupied while the F.B.I. raided the offices :)

This isn’t a failure of vetting. I’m sure they are thoroughly vetting everyone they hire. The problem is that the list of qualifications Team Obama has is likely different than the list of qualifications that the average person would think.
I’d imagine it has a lot more to do with ideology, loyalty and financial support than experience in the department they’re being appointed to and integrity.
If Obama had worked anywhere outside of Chicago politics, he’d understand that, for the most part, Chicago is the exception and not the rule. He’s not used to having people call shenanigans on corrupt appointees because people in Chicago expect the pols to be corrupt.
